For Our Members ...

Hello,

My name is Lee Periard, for the last 23 years I have been the Media Coordinator here at WCMU. One of my responsibilities over the years was to gather information from all around the station and use it to produce this monthly program Guide. We all work very hard to bring you the most current information - pushing our printer right to the absolute deadline and still mail it out on time.

Many changes have occurred to this Guide over the years; however, the purpose has always stayed the same...to share with you a preview of WCMU Public Television and Radio. Now, I’m sure this book will change again as this will be the last program Guide, I work on. I will be retiring at the end of September. One thing I hope doesn’t change is the way you continue to help support the station by filling out and sending in the return envelope from inside the Guide, your support over years has really been impressive – Thank You.

A great thing around here is where my office was located. On my right is the radio news department, the work that goes on in there to produce local and national news, as well as teaching students to be future journalists is truly impressive. On my left is the TV department, incredibly creative people producing so many quality programs and receiving the awards to back it up. Plus, just down the hall is the engineering department doing their very best to keep us on the air. When all that is going at once it was fun to be around.

The best thing about working here is all the good people I have met and become friends

The American Buffalo

Monday, October 16, 8 p.m.

The American Buffalo, a new two-part, four-hour series, takes viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history and across some of the continent’s most iconic landscapes.

with. These are people dedicated to bringing you the best in Public Media and I’m sure they will continue long after I retire. One of those people is Bob Garner, you can catch Bob along with his friends from the Michigan DNR on Thursday, October 5 at 7 p.m. on Ask The DNR. Other programs to look for this month are NOVA Ancient Earth - witness the dramatic history of Earth, from its birth to the emergence of humanity. NOVA premieres October 4 at 9 p.m. The American Buffalo premieres Monday, October 16 – a new two-part, four-hour series, takes viewers on a journey through more that 10,000 years of North American history.

On the radio side, stay informed all day with the news and information on WCMU or enjoy the music on WCMU Classical. Music takes center stage on Saturday & Sunday nights with Homespun, The Juke Joint, Destination Out and others.

Thank you for the opportunity, it has been a pleasure, but now I must work on this retirement thing.

Join WCMU on the road as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day Monday, October 9th 4-6 p.m.

at the Dennos Museum Center with the Traverse Area District Library. There will be stories, dancing, a film screening and indigenous foods. The event will feature picture book giveaways and crafts. Plus, you will get a preview of the brand new PBS film, The American Buffalo, a biography of an improbable, shaggy beast that has found itself at the center of many of the country’s most mythic and heartbreaking tales.

The film takes viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history and across some of the continent’s most iconic landscapes, tracing its evolution, significance to the Great Plains and, most importantly, its relationship to the Indigenous People of North America. Chef Sam Anglin, a Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Member, will join us at the Dennos for the event. Following the screening, Chef Sam will provide remarks and an introduction to the indigenous food he is preparing for the reception.

Born and raised in the former Soviet Union, Jenny immigrated to the US with her family as a teenager, and Gary from a small farming community called Carleton, Michigan. When this unlikely duo discussed the concept for Start Up over a BBQ lunch, and there was no turning back.

“Long before I became an underwriter of WCMU Public Radio, I was a teenage listener of programs you couldn’t find anywhere else on the dial. I view my relationship with WCMU as a collaboration to help ensure alternative content remains available for those looking for non-mainstream media and entertainment.”
