The start of summer brings possibilities for adventure and exploration. As a child, I have fond memories of being a part of my local library’s summer reading program. My grandma lived right down the road from the library, so my cousin and I would walk down and participate in their summer activities. The library was on the smaller side, but it held wonder and knowledge along its walls. I remember the joy of discovering new stories and exploring a new adventure through my chosen book. This small library allowed me to go on adventures without the expense of traveling.
To this day, I am grateful to have those memories of summers filled with wonder. For those with an open summer, turn to your local libraries. Explore the places found on pages and discover a world of adventure. Participate in the summer reading programs and give the children in your life a summer filled with exploration.

Nancy Hellman began listening to WCMU Public Radio approximately 50 years ago when a neighbor told her it would be in the area. At that time, she did not have a television. Once it became feasible, she and partner Glenn Hindbaugh started giving during pledge drives. They eventually became day sponsors, then monthly sustainers, and now have a special fund with their financial advisor to make yearly donations. Nancy suggests using an advisor to help find tax advantages.
Raised outside Caro, Michigan, Nancy was one of five siblings. Her dad worked for the state as an Electroencephalogram (EEG) Diagnostician and her mom was a “traditional” mother who raised very independent children. All three daughters went into teaching, and the two brothers went into business and finance.
Nancy received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Central Michigan University. She took some courses at Western and gained elementary student experience there. Nancy moved to Boyne, teaching high school social studies and art. She eventually moved over to middle school. She loved middle school and noted that “10-year-olds are perfect people.” “I liked being self-contained and taught when the focus was not on testing or a dictated curriculum,” said Nancy. “Being in a small school like Boyne Falls Public, I chose textbooks, reading whole books, flexibility, and ‘No Zeros Club.’ The focus was on individuals, citizenship, and being a complex human.”
Now retired, Nancy and Glenn like to read, keep up with the news, garden, and enjoy their land. Nancy is more of a traveler than Glenn but occasionally gets him to visit places like New Orleans. Nancy credits Glenn as a problem solver, while she creates the problems, so they are a good team. Other interests include cooking and canning (Glenn), and baking (Nancy). They listen to Saturday radio programs and watch Masterpiece Theater and Walter Presents. In addition to supporting WCMU, they support a variety of charities. Nancy was on the Board for Raven Hill Discovery Center (RHDC) for years, and still volunteers when she can. She said one needs to visit RHDC to understand the amazing relationship between science, history, and art.

Courtney Boyd is a newsroom intern for WCMU, and will be reporting on northeast Lower Michigan from the Alpena News this summer. She is a senior at CMU, majoring in journalism and minoring in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts. Courtney has been a reporter for CM Life since 2023, covering a range of topics including student and city government, multicultural stories, features, and diversity, equity and inclusion works. She will return to CM Life this fall as an editor.
Ellie Frysztak is an intern for WCMU, based out of WCMU’s Mount Pleasant newsroom. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Marquette University in 2019, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Law Studies. She worked for four years as a public defense investigator, before returning to school. Ellie is now working on a master’s in journalism at the University of Missouri. Her dream is to become a public media visual journalist after she graduates next year.
Draya Raby is a newsroom intern for WCMU, and will be reporting on the Cadillac area this summer from the Cadillac News. She is a CMU senior majoring in journalism and minoring in creative writing. Draya is currently the secretary of the CMU chapter of The Wildlife Society, and the social media chairperson of the CMU Chapter of the Sierra Club. Being a writer and spreading stories about the world has always been Draya’s dream, in the hope of bringing people across all cultures together in understanding.
WCMU is welcoming five news interns this summer as part of our Michigan News Group internship program. Since 2019, WCMU has been placing summer interns in communities around the state. Our goal is to train the next generation of journalists, while addressing news deserts in central and northern Michigan. You’ll hear our interns reporting this summer on Morning Edition, Here and Now and All Things Considered, and see their stories appearing in the Traverse City Record-Eagle, The Alpena News, The Cadillac News, and the Midland Daily News.
Lauren Rice is a newsroom intern for WCMU, and will be reporting on the Grand Traverse region from the Traverse City Record-Eagle this summer. She is a senior at Central Michigan University, with a major in journalism and minors in political science and public law. This fall, she will be the Editor-in-Chief of Central Michigan Life, and is looking forward to covering the presidential election from a college campus. Lauren sees journalism as well-rounded learning: for the community, and for the journalist.
Masha Smahliuk is a newsroom intern for WCMU, and will be reporting from the Midland Daily News this summer. Masha is a junior at Central Michigan University majoring in journalism, with minors in political science and creative writing. She’s also a managing editor of Central Michigan Life and is a vice president of the Society of Professional Journalists chapter at CMU. Working in journalism has always been Masha’s dream, because she wants to change the world for the better, bring awareness to international issues, and give voice to those who don’t have one.
What is one of your most memorable interviews?
While I was a producer at Iowa Public Radio, I tracked down Joy Tumilson McMeekan, the sister of Chief Petty Officer and Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson of Rockford, Iowa. Tumilson was killed in 2011 while on deployment in Afghanistan in one of the deadliest attacks on U.S. forces during the war. We interviewed McMeekan to reflect on her brother’s life on the 10-year anniversary of his death. There wasn’t a dry eye in the studio following the interview. This interview stands out because it showed listeners a lesser-known side of the war in Afghanistan: how it changed one family’s life forever.
What is your goal when you come to work every day?
I want listeners to hear as much news as possible from central and northern Michigan. My hope is that they will learn something new or have their way of thinking challenged every time they listen.
If you could interview any historical figure, who would it be?
I’d like to have a chat with Thomas Jefferson. I’ve read several books on Jefferson and have always been fascinated by his controversial past, his love of the arts, good wine, and political philosophies. I’d love to get his thoughts and perspectives on our current political moment and show him the photos from the James Webb telescope.
What are you reading right now?
“Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout” by Cal Newport. So far, this is my favorite in the Newport cannon. Highly recommend!
