Inspiring Future Journalists
During the 2022-2023 school year, WCMU’s Teresa Homsi worked with students from Cheboygan Middle School to introduce them to journalism and help them develop media literacy skills, as part of a Report for America service project.
Teresa taught a “journalism crash course” for two 5th grade classes and helped organize a school newspaper club for 4th through 7th grade students. Newspaper students wrote stories about their school and community.

The club culminated with a field trip to the Cheboygan River Dam, where students reported on efforts to control invasive sea lampreys. Some of their work was even featured on WCMU Public Radio!
Teresa’s service project with the school is part of her position as a corps member with Report for America. RFA places emerging journalists into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues.
