We have lots of great alternatives if you are looking to stay inside and keep cool during these dog days of summer. A Capitol Fourth is one of the most viewed programs every year on public television. Join us once again for this spectacular observance of our nation’s independence. The program begins Tuesday, July 4 at 8 p.m. and can also be heard on WCMU Classical.
Our Summer of Mystery continues with the premiere of Grantchester Season 8 on Sunday, July 9. According to our friends at Masterpiece, “this explosive new season will explore faith, forgiveness, and redemption – testing Reverend Will Davenport and D.I. Geordie Keating to the limit.” The same night will see the debut of D.I. Ray starring Parminder Nagra (of E.R. fame) as Detective Inspector Rachita Ray. The television team behind Destination Michigan shares memorable visits this month to the links in Roscommon and a sesquicentennial farm in Grand Ledge. Find out where they are headed next when you tune in on Thursdays at 9 p.m., Saturdays at 11 a.m. and anytime on wcmu.org.
Several of our listeners tell us how they catch The Juke Joint with Robert Barclay Sunday nights from 8 to 11 p.m. around the campfire in the summertime or in their
cars heading home from a fantastic weekend up north. How do you listen to WCMU Public Radio? Speaking of radio, our summer reporting interns continue to hone their craft while gathering stories based at their assigned newspapers in Traverse City, Midland, Alpena, Cadillac, Bad Axe and Big Rapids. Catch their reports throughout the day on the air, in their newspapers, and online. Thank you for supporting WCMU! You make it possible for us to fulfill our mission to educate, inform, entertain, and engage the communities we serve.
Happy Summer!
Rick Westover Interim General ManagerOn Our Cover America’s favorite Independence Day celebration, A Capitol Fourth, features well-known musical artists and puts viewers front and center for the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. A Capitol Fourth is broadcast to millions at home and to our troops watching around the world
Tuesday, July 4, 8 p.m.
WCMU Public Television & on WCMU Classical
We’re working to tell your stories in the middle of another Michigan summer, our fifth year with the Michigan News Group Internship. This special summer program is a partnership between WCMU, the Central Michigan University Departments of Journalism, BCA and community newspapers across central and northern Michigan. Selected students produce broadcast stories for WCMU, print stories for their assigned community newspaper, and web content for both.
Hadlee is a second year Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts major. She is hoping to use the summer internship to broaden her scope from focusing solely on sports to doing more news and learning about Michigan and Cadillac. For the future, Hadlee wants to work for a major sports broadcasting company or a major league sports team in any kind of media.
Pioneer: Kaia is a third year CMU student studying Journalism. She is hoping to learn more about radio, and is looking forward to learning more about the community. In the future, Kaia hopes to become a sports reporter, specifically focusing on women’s sports.
Kylie Sczepanski / Midland Daily News: Kylie is a third year Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts major. She is looking forward to growing her skills as a journalist and covering a community that she loves. After graduation, Kylie plans to pursue a career as a multimedia journalist.
Rebecca Particka / Traverse City
Record Eagle: Rebecca is a senior studying photojournalism and pursuing minors in information technology, multimedia design, and visual merchandising. She hopes to learn more about creating audio stories and covering local news this summer. After graduation, Rebecca wants to pursue a career in community journalism.
Renae King / Huron Daily Tribune (Bad Axe): Renae is a third year journalism major. She is interning this summer for WCMU and the Huron Daily Tribune where she hopes to learn more about and serve the thumb community that she grew up in.
Zipporah Abarca / Alpena News:
Zipporah Abarca is a third year student at CMU majoring in Journalism. She will be interning at The Alpena News over the summer. She envisions herself one day running an international newsroom that will focus on the importance of seeking out and listening to the voices that go unheard.

DCECU recognizes the value that WCMU brings to central and northern Michigan, and we consider it a privilege to be a WCMU sponsor. It’s truly fulfilling to know that, by being a WCMU sponsor, DCECU is contributing to something that is deeply valued by the community. And on a personal note, I always feel honored to hear or see our sponsor spots on-air amid the variety of programming that our sponsorship helps to support.

Scott Detrow is the new host of the Saturday and Sunday editions of All Things Considered. Detrow has been NPR’s White House correspondent since 2020, and co-hosts the NPR Politics Podcast.
“I’m thrilled to be joining All Things Considered on the weekends,” said Detrow. “With a presidential election already underway, there will be a lot of political news to cover. But I’m also really looking forward to branching out into other areas, including the cultural, musical, and sports news that listeners look for on the weekends.”
Detrow joined NPR in 2015, covering the 2016 presidential election and serving as a congressional correspondent. He has also worked as a statehouse reporter in Pennsylvania and California.
You can hear him on All Things Considered every Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m.

During the 2022-2023 school year, WCMU’s Teresa Homsi worked with students from Cheboygan Middle School to introduce them to journalism and help them develop media literacy skills, as part of a Report for America service project.
Teresa taught a “journalism crash course” for two 5th grade classes and helped organize a school newspaper club for 4th through 7th grade students. Newspaper students wrote stories about their school and community.
The club culminated with a field trip to the Cheboygan River Dam, where students reported on efforts to control invasive sea lampreys. Some of their work was even featured on WCMU Public Radio!
Teresa’s service project with the school is part of her position as a corps member with Report for America. RFA places emerging journalists into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues.
