For Our Members ... February has arrived and even though it’s cold outside, love is in the air and we are ready to hunker down, watch and listen to some amazing programming! In celebration of Black History month, we are helping viewers dig deep into the origin story of gospel music, coming out of slavery, blending with the blues tradition, and soaring to new heights during the Great Migration. From Mahalia Jackson to Kirk Franklin, in the last century, gospel music has become the dominant form of African American religious expression and provided a soundtrack of healing and uplift to those at the front lines of protest and change. Watch GOSPEL on February 12th and 13th beginning at 9 p.m. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about a GOSPEL screening event we are doing in partnership with the Office of Multicultural Student Education on the campus of Central Michigan University later this month. We are proud to introduce you and your children or grandchildren to Lyla in the Loop, a funny and engaging new animated series for children ages 4-8. Lyla Loops and her sidekick, Stu, use creative and strategic problem solving skills to help family, friends and their community. From building
homemade carnival games to creating a new sandwich for a family restaurant, Lyla, Stu and the whole Loops crew tackle challenges with servings of humor and heart! You can catch Lyla in the Loop weekdays at 8 a.m. on PBS Kids! Looking for an easy way to share Valentine’s Day messages with all of your family or friends? Head on over to wcmu.org/valentines where you’ll find lots of ideas to boost your creativity! There are a bunch of cards that you can easily print and send. You’ll also find fun crafts that you can do with kiddos or students. Plus, simple recipes to share joy and love with those around you! Happy Valentine’s Day from your friends at WCMU. Stay warm and cozy!

On Our Cover
GOSPEL Monday, February 12 Dig deep into the origin story of Black gospel music, coming out of slavery, blending with the blues tradition, and soaring to new heights during the Great Migration.
1
Black History Month The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song This documentary reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not truly their own, but a redemptive force for a nation whose original sin was found in their ancestors’ enslavement across the Middle Passage. Watch Part 1 on Thursday, February 1 at 10 p.m. and Part 2 on Thursday, February 8 at 10 p.m.
Gospel Live! GOSPEL Live! Presented by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is a concert celebration honoring the legacy of gospel music in America. As a companion to GOSPEL, hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., secular and gospel artists sing their favorite gospel classics on a diverse range of topics including history, art, music, science, sports, literature, and more! Watch on Friday, February 9 at 9 p.m. 2
A Symphony Celebration: The Blind Boys of Alabama Hailed as “Gospel Titans” by Rolling Stone magazine, this beloved group rose to fame in the segregated South with their thrilling vocal harmonies and roof-raising live shows. Watch on Friday, February 9 at 10 p.m.
Shuttlesworth Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth was raised in the crucible of segregated Birmingham but he was forged by its attempt to kill him. When the KKK planted a bomb underneath his bed and he emerged unharmed, he was sure he was saved by God to lead a Movement. His work not only ended legal segregation but led directly to the Civil and Voting Rights Acts. Watch on Thursday, February 15 at 10 p.m.
The Dream Whisperer In the midst of segregation, the allblack Tennessee A&I Tigers were the first collegiate basketball team to win three consecutive national championships. Discover a man’s quest to ensure this basketball team was not lost to history. Watch on Thursday, February 22 at 10 p.m.
3
Women Making History Independent Lens: Breaking the News Who decides which stories get told? A scrappy group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists buck the white male-dominated status quo, banding together to launch The 19*, a digital news startup aiming to combat misinformation. A story of America in flux, and the voices often left out of the narrative, the documentary shows change doesn’t come easy. Watch on Monday, February 19 at 10 p.m.
American Experience: Fly With Me Meet the pioneering women who changed the world while flying it. Maligned as feminist sellouts, “stewardesses,” as they were called, knew different: they were on the frontlines of a battle to assert gender equality and transform the workplace. Watch on Tuesday, February 20 at 9 p.m. 4
This month on Destination Michigan we’ll stop in Ludington to meet a football helmet fanatic with a passion for the pigskin. We’ll head to Holland to immerse ourselves in Dutch culture and experience a klompen dance at Nelis’ Dutch village. Creativity is the key in Clare when we check out intricate art made of barbed wire. Plus, we’re off to Boyne City to walk with you across the world’s longest timber towered suspension bridge. You can watch Destination Michigan on Thursday nights at 9 p.m., Saturday mornings at 11 a.m., or online anytime at wcmu.org
All Creatures Great and Small: Touring the Dales Experience the beauty of the Dales and the many locations that audiences have come to love. Viewers will be taken on a virtual travelogue of the actual locations, including the Skeldale House, Heston Grange, and The Drovers Arms, as well as scenic vistas, bridges, farms, stables, and countryside roadways. There’s even a stop by the James Herriot Museum. Watch on Sunday, 5 February 25 at 9 p.m.
Austin City Limits: Tanya Tucker and Brittney Spencer Don’t miss country icon Tanya Tucker’s performance of career classics and selections from Brittney Spencer’s upcoming debut. Saturday, February 3, 11 p.m. 7 PM

The all-new PBS KIDS animated series Lyla in the Loop follows Lyla, a dynamic 7-year-old girl who lives in a big city with her close-knit family, her fantastical blue sidekick Stu and a host of relatable and quirky characters in her community. Lyla loves to collaborate with Stu, her mom Lydia, her dad Louis, her older twin sisters Liana and Louisa and her little brother Luke to solve everyday mishaps, messes and mixups. Along the way, Lyla relies on creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills to design and test her ideas and build imaginative contraptions (which lead to clever solutions and comedic disasters).

WCMU Donor Spotlight Gene Tang (1934-2023) was a long-time supporter of WCMU Public Media and upon hearing of his passing, we wanted to remember his kindness. As a rememberance, we would like to reshare his donor spolight. Gene was born and raised in North Dakota and lived in Traverse City for 54 years. Gene had a long career as a pathologist and did his collegiate studies in North Dakota and Montreal, Canada. He was also an army veteran. Gene has three daughters, one son and three grandchildren. His parents immigrated from Denmark and Gene had been lucky enought to visit relatives there throughout his life. Aside from traveling, Gene had many hobbies over the years including skiing and boating. He played in the Northern Michigan College Community band for many years and had a passion for music, which gained him the invite to join the Northern Michigan Brass Band. A lover of good culinary dishes, Gene supported Lobdell’s: A Teaching Restaurant associated with Northwestern Michigan College. Not only did Gene support many organizations financially, he also quickly lent a hand to a friend or neighbor in need, and had a knack for making others feel good. Gene first began giving to Public Media to support great kids programming. He continued to give because of his recognition that WCMU is home for the arts. Gene’s generousity was shown throughout everything he did and we are happy to have known him not only as a supporter but as a friend.

Dear WCMU Listeners, As February ushers in its frosty charm, we at WCMU find ourselves reflecting on the vital role you play in our shared journey. Your engagement and feedback are invaluable, helping us shape a programming landscape that resonates with the diverse interests and needs of central and northern Michigan. I want to personally express my gratitude for your continued presence in our public radio family. Two weeks ago, we introduced Marketplace and The Daily to our station. These additions mark a significant step in diversifying our content, offering you deeper insights into the world of business, economics, and the most pressing stories of our time. We hope these shows have started to become a part of your daily routine, bringing fresh perspectives and rigorous journalism to your evening. You can hear these programs each weeknight at 6 and 6:30 respectively. Personally, I’ve been tuning in more often for comprehensive coverage of this year’s biggest election issues. In a time when public discourse is more important than ever before, our goal is to offer a platform for balanced, in-depth reporting and analysis. Our focus isn’t on the 22
horse race – it’s on the issues that matter to you. This month, you’ll hear coverage from South Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, and right here in Michigan as primary voters head to the polls. I hope you’ll tune in to hear their stories and perspectives as election season ramps up. Thank you for being an integral part of WCMU. Your support, whether through listening, engaging with our content, or providing feedback, is what makes our work so rewarding. We’re looking forward to spending the rest of this year, and many more to come, with you by our side, exploring, learning, and growing together. With warmest regards,
Mike Horace Radio Program and Operations Manager
Staff Spotlight: Teresa Homsi This month, we’re learning more about WCMU’s Environment Reporter, Teresa Homsi. She’s based in Cheboygan, and reports for WCMU with support from Report for America and listeners like you.
What kind of impact do you think your reporting has? I like to think I’m having some impact on the region by sharing important fact-based information and highlighting untold stories from the region. I speak to people from all sorts of backgrounds. They don’t necessarily see eye-to-eye on every topic, but I listen to all of them, and in doing so, I hope to get a more nuanced perspective. That’s what I try to accomplish with my reporting: inspiring listeners to, well, listen. To put our assumptions and what we think we know aside, to give others a chance.
What is one of your most memorable reporting moments? Digging through cow dung, donning a hard hat, tromping through forests and beaches – there are few dull moments when I go out into the field. But one stand-out trip was last June when I met up with a bunch of anglers in the middle of the woods outside of Grayling. Like most assignments, I go into it with little to no expectations and an open mind. That June evening, I witnessed what I can only describe as the “art of flyfishing” and produced one of my favorite stories of the year. I wasn’t raised in a family that fishes, hunts or camps, and while I’ve always appreciated nature, that night I got an insight into how deeply restorative and spiritual it can be to just sit by a river.
If you could interview any historical figure, who would it be and why? This is a tough one, but I’d say Lucretia Mott. Mott was seen as a radical in her time, and I’d like to learn about her sources of inspiration when it wasn’t necessarily the status quo to be a feminist, abolitionist and pacifist. She was steadfast in her principles, and I’d like to understand her reasoning behind some of the decisions she made throughout her life. She was also known to be a phenomenal and moving speaker, which is important for a good interview!

Mulch Magic: Pine Needles Transform Gardens on From the Ground Up! In a recent episode of “From the Ground Up,” host Judy Wagley and guest Brent Crain, a Consumer Horticulture Educator from Michigan State University Extension, tackled a seasonal gardening question: Can pine needles from your Christmas tree make good mulch? Crain, who notably completed his PhD in Christmas trees, shared some surprising insights, debunking myths and offering practical advice for garden enthusiasts. Crain explained that contrary to popular belief, pine needles don’t significantly alter soil pH in garden beds, making them an excellent mulching option. However, he advised caution for food gardens, due to potential pesticides or paint on the needles. A highlight of the discussion was Crain’s suggestion to mix pine needles with mulched leaves, preventing the formation of dense mats while maximizing the benefits of both materials. For more gardening tips and the full story, including an amusing anecdote from Crain about a ‘snowy’ Christmas tree, find the full episodes of “From the Ground Up” on WCMU Public Media. Discover why this isn’t just your typical garden talk, and learn how to turn your holiday leftovers into a garden treasure!
