You may be thinking about connecting with those you love even more this month. It’s satisfying to share experiences and thoughts with others in a deep and meaningful way. We all want to be heard and seen, to matter, and to make a difference. I’m reminded of an article I read on how to have better conversations from David Brooks, an NPR and PBS NewsHour contributor. I’ve paraphrased it below.
Approach with awe. The people who have great conversations walk into the room expecting to be delighted by you and make you feel the beam of their affection and respect.
Ask elevating questions. Some questions, startling as they seem at first, compel us to see ourselves from a higher vantage: What crossroads are you at? Who do you feel most grateful to have in your life?
Ask open-ended questions. Start with “What was it like. …” or “Tell me about a time. …” or “How did you manage to cope while your mother was going through cancer treatment?”
Treat attention as all or nothing. Act as if attention had an on/off switch with no dimmer. Total focus. I have a friend who listens to conversations the way
congregants listen to sermons in charismatic churches — with amens, and praises. The effect is magnetic!
Find the disagreement under the disagreement. When two people disagree about something, it’s because there is some deeper philosophical or moral disagreement undergirding it. Being curious about experiences is more important than being right.
We strive to connect you to a variety of perspectives and places through media. Our hope is that you are empowered to have deeper conversations. Our work would not be possible without your generous support, thank you!
A NEW animated series helps children learn creative and systematic ways to solve problems. The playful trio will demonstrate computational thinking (CT) for preschoolers, a way of thinking that enables them to solve problems, express themselves, and accomplish tasks using the practices, processes and ideas at the core of computer science.

Materials
q Paint or markers
q Paint brushes
q Wooden clothespins
q Large round paper doilies
q Pipe cleaners
q Scissors
q Toilet paper tube
q Glue gun (optional)
1 Paint the clothespins. Encourage your kids to paint or decorate their clothespins as they’d like. Place pins on a paper tube to dry.
2 Fold a doily in half. This is to mark the center of the doily so the butterfly has “even” wings.
3 Lace doily through the gap in the clothespin. Gently bunch the remaining bit of doily to create the wings. It may be easier to turn the clothespin upside down and then push the paper in.
4 Cut pipe cleaners into 2 inch pieces and fold in half. Use a glue gun or other sticky-tacky glue to affix a pipe cleaner antennae on top of a clothespin. To use this as a Valentine, affix a note or write a message directly onto the clothespin!

Rose Prasad is originally from Wisconsin and made her way to Michigan via Ohio. Her husband, Ben’s, schooling and career took them to a couple of different Universities, but it was Rose’s career that moved the family to Mount Pleasant. Rose received her Doctorate of Finance from the University of Cincinnati and taught at Central Michigan University (CMU) for over twentyfive years.
Ben was from India, and he and Rose traveled to his home country as well as many other countries throughout their marriage. Since Ben’s passing, Rose’s love for travel has only grown. It should come as no surprise that some of her favorite programs are done by Rick Steves.
Rose has been giving to Public Media since she lived in Ohio. She says “WCMU is the most reliable, least one-sided news station around.” She added, “I love shows on both radio and TV. Some of my favorite programs are Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me, Cook’s Country, Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street and the nightly news programs.”
Rose is an avid volunteer in the community. She is very involved in her local Rotary club, volunteers at her church and other local non-profits, such as the food pantry. When Rose isn’t traveling or volunteering, you can find her participating in her book club, bible study or hanging out with friends at a local bagel joint. In 2020, Rose was the first women to be inducted into the CMU College of Business Hall of Fame.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross, the Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues, is one of public radio’s most popular programs. Each week, nearly 5 million people listen to the show’s intimate conversations. Fresh Air has been categorized as a “talk show,” it hardly fits the mold.
Its 1994 Peabody Award citation credits Fresh Air with “probing questions, revelatory interviews and unusual insights.” And a variety of top publications count Gross among the country’s leading interviewers. Interviews receive as much time as needed and are complemented by comments from well-known critics and commentators. Make time for Fresh Air Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. You can also explore over 40 years of interviews at freshairarchive.org.

In this talk, Robert G. O’Meally will outline the dates and places of the Harlem Renaissance and highlight some of its major movers and shakers. He will also give a brief overview of dance of the period, but his emphasis will be on the multi-talented Josephine Baker and one of her mentors, Johnny Hudgins, an international dance star in his own time who is now virtually lost to history. The importance of Jack Johnson, that dancer in the boxing ring who became the first African American to become Heavyweight Champion of the World, will also be explored.
Robert G. O’Meally is the Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, where he has served on the faculty for thirty years. The founder and former director of Columbia’s Center for Jazz Studies, O’Meally is the author of several publications.
