The GUIDE A u g u s t 2 0 2 2
For Our Members ... Democracies depend on a well-informed public. Every day, we strive to connect and empower Michiganders with trusted, fact-based information. Whether it’s reporting from our newsroom, in communities across our 42-county coverage area, or from NPR and PBS programs like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, BBC news, PBS NewsHour and Washington Week-you’ll hear a variety of viewpoints.
We’re working on a virtual field trip in partnership with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and the Ziibiwing Center. It will highlight the significance of the seven grandfather teachings and how it influences the identity of the people in Michigan.
No matter your political affiliation, information is key and we all benefit from a deeper understanding and conversation about the complicated issues facing all of us. Your support is essential to keeping WCMU strong and continuing to bring you stories about the people, culture and history of this state. Thank you!
Have you activated your Passport account yet? If you like drama, you’re missing out on some great programs like Annika, Ridley Road and 3,000 more titles covering a broad range of topics. Last month our Passport viewing was up by an astounding 43%!
I’m pleased to say the Destination Michigan team won two Emmy’s recently! If you’ve missed out on a few episodes, you can find them on WCMU’s YouTube Channel. While you’re there, check out other WCMU productions.
Debbie Hamlett WCMU Executive Director/General Manager

WCMU Donor Spotlight Susan H. Grant was born and raised in Detroit and did her graduate studies at Wayne State University. She lived briefly in Florida with her husband Donald until a job opportunity led them to Big Rapids, where Susan has lived the last 45 years. Susan was both the first female attorney in Big Rapids and female judge in Mecosta and Osceola Counties. She was elected to the District Court bench in 1996 and served for 18 years. For a short time, Susan and her husband Donald were “snowbirds” in Florida where they supported both WCMU and their PBS affiliate in FL, demonstrating their appreciation of programming year-round. After losing her soulmate of 46 years, Susan decided to return to work part time and became a Contract Attorney for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services focusing on child protection cases. She also enjoys walking with her two dogs, Sophie and Maisie, golfing, playing pickleball, bridge and Mah Jongg. Susan’s involvement in her community ranges from membership in women’s groups such as Voca Lyrica, Zonta Club and American Association of University Women; to service on the boards for the Hospital Foundation and United Way; to financially supporting local agencies like WISE, Habitat for Humanity, Project Starburst and Our Brothers Keeper that address social justice issues, and ARC, her local animal shelter. Susan is passionate about Masterpiece programming, especially mysteries, and is a member of the Masterpiece Trust, a national program that not only benefits Masterpiece programing, but also WCMU. She is a faithful listener of “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.” Fun fact, Susan was once a guest on WCMU’s Ask the Specialist! Susan says, “Financially supporting my local PBS stations has been a lifelong habit and I want it to be my legacy. That is why I have included both the Masterpiece Trust and WCMU in my estate plan. I feel it is the least I can do for all the enjoyment PBS has given me.”

Before the summer slips on by, we want to congratulate and welcome Juana Summers, the new co-host for All Things Considered. She joins Ailsa Chang, Mary Louise Kelly and Ari Shapiro rotating through host duties on the national desk. Prior to joining NPR, Juana covered politics for outlets like Politico, CNN and The Associated Press. She got her start in public radio at KBIA in Columbia, Mo., and also previously covered Congress for NPR. Juana notes: “In my work as a political correspondent, I spend a lot of time talking with young people about the country and the world that they are inheriting. It’s made me think a lot about the future of our audience, and the opportunities that we have to grow.” “I’m excited to become a part of the All Things Considered team, and to play a role in introducing a new, diverse generation of listeners to the blend of powerful storytelling, accountability journalism and culturally relevant conversations that you can only find on NPR.”
