50TH Anniversary Celebration

For Our Members ... Dear friends, I’ve just ordered a notebook because I love the cover. It says, “Teaching is the greatest act of optimism”. I see that optimism every summer in WCMU’s internship program. This year again, we will bring a handful of young journalists on board, place them in community newspapers and teach them how to tell stories for print, broadcast and the web. I’m here to tell you, our future is in good hands! This is the 4th year of our summer program, and every year the students produce fascinating stories about the communities in which they’re based. Your communities. Over the years, our interns have covered a wide range of issues; election security, county fairs, the historic Midland flooding, business, agriculture, and of course COVID-19. You can see our students and their stories by searching online for “MI News Group WCMU” So today I want to thank you for welcoming our students to your community and allowing them to tell your stories.

Thank you for providing the financial support that allows us to teach young journalists how to report professionally, compassionately and ethically. Thank you for walking with us in this great act of optimism. You’ll notice a few adjustments to your guide this month. After a complete review, we’ve combined all four of our television channel primetime listings, made it a self-mailer, and streamlined the information. Overall, this redesign provides more flexibility and cost savings. We are always looking for ways to be good stewards of your investment in WCMU.

An Imperial Mughal Album Folio at the Detroit Institute of Arts APRIL 27 6:00p

FIA Theater

In 2019, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) acquired a richly detailed, double-sided folio that once belonged to an album commissioned by the emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628–58), patron of the Taj Mahal, toward the end of his reign. In this presentation, we will take a close look at the DIA folio, as well as related works, exploring its details, its historical and artistic contexts, and what it tells us about imperial Mughal art-collecting practices. Dr. Katherine E. Kasdorf received her PhD in South Asian art history from Columbia University in 2013 and is Associate Curator of Arts of Asia and the Islamic World at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Mughal, Indian, Portrait of a Courtier, Folio from the Late Shah Jahan Album (verso), portrait, ca. 1650, borders between 1650 and 1658; Opaque watercolor, ink, and gold on paper, 151/4 x 10 inches. Museum Purchase, Robert H. Tannahill Foundation Fund, 2019.98.B. Detroit Institute of Arts.

The Sheppy Dog Fund Lecture has been established to address topics of art, religion, and history, and is funded by The Sheppy Dog Fund, Dr. Alan Klein, advisor.

“Long before I became an underwriter of WCMU Public Radio, I was a teenage listener of programs you couldn’t find anywhere else on the dial. I view my relationship with WCMU as a collaboration to help ensure alternative content remains available for those looking for non-mainstream media and entertainment.” - Bryan Galloup/Galloup Guitars 21

Congratulations to Ayesha Rascoe, the new host for Weekend Edition Sunday and Up First! Ayesha brings multi-faceted experience to the host chair, having covered some of the pivotal moments in recent history from her vantage point as NPR’s White House correspondent. Ayesha’s commitment to the intersection of news, and her wide-ranging appreciation for, and engagement with all things cultural made her the natural choice for this role. Ayesha notes: “I am beyond honored to take on this role and work with the fabulous team behind Weekend Edition Sunday. Covering the White House for NPR has been the highlight of my career so far. At NPR, I’ve found my voice and worked with amazing colleagues. I’ve also been privileged to get to know the dedicated listeners who make up the heart of public radio. While I will miss the Washington Desk, I look forward to connecting to listeners every Sunday. And one day, I’m going to solve one of those puzzles!” Weekend Edition Sunday airs from 8 to 10 am.
