What once hid beneath the bed now sits beside us, within us, softened by time, memory, and affection. Monsters is an imaginative exploration of the monster across contemporary art. Through painting, sculpture, and the creation of characterdriven worlds, the artists in this exhibition transform fantastical creatures into symbols of comfort, curiosity, and self-expression.

Gabriela Noelle builds immersive realms with larger than life companions that spark curiosity and offer comfort. Bibi Lei creates tactile, whimsical dreamscapes where playful creatures invite wonder and delight. Mr B Baby transforms adversity into joyful characters whose cracks bloom into symbols of resilience, growth, and belonging.

Tony Pharo's creatures serve as alter egos, exploring the instinctive and liberating forces that shape our inner dimensions. Adam Handler's patchwork-like figures balance loneliness and tenderness, revealing the quiet beauty of connection. A special mid-show feature Dan Lam extends the exploration through her unmistakable biomorphic forms that are at once alluring, playful, and reflective of the soft, messy realities of human life.

Together, these artists reimagine the monster as both a companion and as a mirror — reflecting the parts of ourselves that remain curious, vulnerable, resilient, and open to enchantment. DAN LAM American, b. 1988

Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the human body, Dan Lam creates tactile sculptures that exist between the familiar and the uncanny. Working with polyurethane foam, epoxy resin, and automotive paint, she transforms unconventional materials into luminous, biomorphic forms that appear to melt, drip, and grow. Vibrant color and shimmering surfaces draw the eye, while spikes, tendrils, and exaggerated textures introduce a quiet sense of tension.

Since earning her MFA from Arizona State University, Lam has continually pushed the possibilities of her materials, allowing experimentation to shape each work.

Rather than beginning with detailed sketches, she responds intuitively to the behavior of foam as it expands and evolves, creating sculptures that feel alive in the process of becoming. Echoing forms found in coral, fungi, sea life, and the body, her work resists easy classification while remaining deeply rooted in the natural world.

Balancing attraction with discomfort, Lam's sculptures transform contradiction into their defining quality. Seductive yet defensive, playful yet unsettling, her works encourage a closer look while questioning our instinct to touch what we find beautiful, unfamiliar, or strange.

BIBI LEI Portuguese Chinese, b. 1985

Bibi Lei creates vibrant, dreamlike paintings inhabited by her recurring “Brave Girls,” evolving figures that symbolize innocence, courage, and the enduring sense of wonder that accompanies personal growth. A self-taught artist, she paints intuitively using both brushes and her bare hands, allowing color, energy, and emotion to guide the creative process. Through fantastical landscapes populated by spirit creatures, blooming forms, and imagined companions, Lei constructs worlds where hope, curiosity, and imagination remain constant forces.

Born in Macau and now based in Tokyo, Lei draws upon her multicultural roots to create works that blend personal experience with fantasy. Themes of motherhood, self-discovery, and the inner child appear throughout her paintings, reflecting what she describes as a process of continual self-evolution. Her recurring figures move through emotional landscapes that mirror the joys, uncertainties, and transformations of life.

For Lei, painting is both a creative practice and a journey inward. Through vivid color and intuitive mark-making, she creates works that celebrate resilience, possibility, and the power of imagination, inviting viewers to reconnect with the sense of wonder that exists within us all.

GABRIELA NOELLE GONZALEZ Cuban-American, b. 1990

Gabriela Noelle Gonzalez creates interactive sculptures, installations, and objects that blur the boundaries between art, design, and play. Working with lucite, mixed media, and textiles, she builds vibrant worlds populated by original characters, transforming familiar spaces into environments that encourage exploration and discovery. Her practice draws from the curiosity and imagination of childhood, inviting viewers to engage with her work through movement, interaction, and wonder.

Through her multidisciplinary practice, Miami-based artist Gabriela Noelle creates portals into alternate dimensions where the inner child is protected and celebrated.

Drawing from folklore, childhood memories, Latin American storytelling traditions, craft, and play, she invites viewers into a universe inhabited by Las Bandidas y Los Monstros—figures misunderstood by the very world they seek to heal.

At the core of Gonzalez's practice is a desire to preserve the spirit of the present moment. Viewing her work as a form of documentation, she transforms everyday experiences, cultural touchstones, and shared memories into colorful creations that celebrate creativity, participation, and the enduring value of imagination.

ADAM HANDLER American, b. 1986

Adam Handler creates paintings populated by a recurring cast of ghosts, animals, flowers, and wide-eyed figures that exist somewhere between memory, imagination, and personal mythology. Inspired by familiar cartoon characters, childhood imagery, and instinctive markmaking, Tony Pharo creates expressive paintings that balance playful nostalgia with emotional honesty. Vibrant colors and energetic lines collide across the canvas, reflecting what the artist describes as a “noisy mind” while transforming personal experiences into dynamic visual narratives.

MR B BABY Mexican - American, b. 1989

Drawing inspiration from Mexican folk art, children's books, and the cultural traditions of the U.S.-Mexico border region, Mr B Baby creates vibrant worlds filled with playful characters, bold color, and symbolic storytelling. Her work is rooted in a visual language shaped by her Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage, blending folkloric imagery with contemporary narratives that celebrate community, resilience, and joy.

At the center of many of her compositions is Chucho, a piñata-inspired character whose cracks bloom into flowers, transforming a familiar childhood object into a symbol of growth through adversity.

Raised in a predominantly Spanish-speaking household in Chula Vista, California, Mr B Baby draws upon personal experience and cultural memory to create characters that feel both deeply individual and universally relatable. Influenced by the wonder of children's literature and the accessibility of public art, her work often explores themes of identity, healing, optimism, and belonging. Through murals, paintings, and immersive projects, she creates spaces that invite connection while celebrating the stories that shape communities.

At the heart of her practice is a belief in art's ability to uplift and transform. Whether encountered on a city wall or within the gallery, her characters serve as reminders of perseverance, encouraging viewers to embrace vulnerability, find strength in their experiences, and reconnect with a sense of wonder.
