BAR FLYER FINDING YOUR PASSION: THE KEY TO WORK-LIFE BALANCE

BY NANCY GRACE, PRESIDENT | TENTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT BAR I PRACTICE FAMILY LAW. It is an area of law that people either love or hate; there are very few lukewarm feelings about it. Fortunately, I love family law! That is not to say that this area of the law can’t be frustrating, difficult and exhausting at times, but it can also be rewarding and very satisfying. One of the biggest challenges in practicing family law is avoiding burn out. I tell new attorneys entering this area of practice that family law will absorb as much of your life as you will let it, so you have to be the one to set limits and find balance.

Finding balance between our work life and the rest of our life is something with which lawyers, not just family lawyers, often struggle. So what is the key? How exactly do we find work-life balance?

For me, the answer is easy — find your passion! Find that thing outside work that you are passionate about. For me it is the Tar Heels, travel and my family (including my brand new baby granddaughter)! When I’m watching my Tar Heels play basketball, or traveling out of the country, or snuggling with my granddaughter as she sleeps on my shoulder, my mind lets go of work, my soul is nourished and my energy is recharged.

What is your passion? What brings you joy outside of work?

Do you love spending time with your pets? Are you a gourmet cook? Do you love to paint or play an instrument?

Would you like to write the next great American novel?

Are you an avid reader? Your passion can be anything that helps you take your mind off of work and makes you happy. Once you’ve found your passion, make it a priority. In our busy lives, the demands on our time can sometimes be overwhelming, but the one thing you should always schedule into your life is time to enjoy your passion! It doesn’t necessarily have to be a lot, but find some time as often as possible to pursue your passion. If you have to, carve out time and schedule it on your calendar. If you find your passion and make it a priority, you will have unlocked the key to work-life balance.

You’ll be a happier person and a better lawyer for it! WBF

Twice a year we take time to remember our fellow lawyers in the Tenth Judicial District Bar who have passed away. All Tenth Judicial District Bar members are invited to take part in this uplifting service to recognize their contributions to the profession. Please join us at the Wake County Justice Center on Friday, April 12 at 2 p.m. in room 702 for this special session of court.

Breakfast Discussion Series: “Restoring Driver’s Licenses by Eliminating Traffic Court Debt” | April 17 Our breakfast discussion series continues with another great program at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17 at Campbell Law School (225 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh). Daniel Bowes of the NC Justice Center will present “Second Chance Driving: Restoring Driver’s Licenses by Eliminating Traffic Court Debt.” This course will cover the Second Chance Mobility Project’s work on restoring driver’s licenses by eliminating traffic court debt, including court costs and the barriers to waiving them; automatic and indefinite driver’s license revocations for failure to pay court fees and the impact it has on people and their families; collaborative measures to increase access to relief; and ways for attorneys to identify common license suspensions. Breakfast is free for all Tenth Judicial District and WCBA members. One hour of general CLE credit is pending, and is free for WCBA members and $35 for non-members.

Annual Picnic at Mordecai Park | May 7 Pulled vs. chopped. Pig vs. cow. Vinegar vs. that heathen ketchup-based mess. Although everyone can argue about what makes the best barbecue, we can all agree that the annual WCBA May picnic at Mordecai Park is one of the best events of the year! On Tuesday, May 7 we’ll be serving up the good stuff from Carolina Barbecue with (hopefully) a big side of sunshine and fresh air. The fun begins at 12:15. Registration is available online.

Lawyers with Disabilities Task Force Seeks Members and Input As part of the WCBA’s ongoing efforts to continue our growth as a more inclusive and supportive bar for all of our members, we are launching a new task force to help identify ways we can accommodate and support members living and practicing with varying disabilities, spearheaded by Cody Davis. MY PASSION: MY LIFE ON CANVAS

MY LIFE AS A PAINTER BEGAN SEPTEMBER 1, 1944. It was my first day of school in Albemarle, N.C., my hometown. I was a first grader. The teacher placed a carton of tempera paint and some brushes and paper in front of each child in the classroom. All the boys had painted airplanes and tanks, and the girls drew houses with people sweeping with broomsticks. For some reason, I painted a huge rabbit. I painted the rabbit white, the sun orange, the grass green, the eyes pink and I was finished. It took ten minutes.

The principal of the school came into the classroom and exclaimed about my rabbit. She said, “What a wonderful rabbit! Let’s go out into the hallway and hang it on the wall.” I became at that moment a committed and dedicated artist. I painted flowers and trees and portraits. I painted mountains and houses and horses.

Each of my teachers asked for a painting and I obliged with joy and pleasure.

I never stopped painting. When I finished high school, I was accepted in the School of Design at NC State University. But before I could enroll, the Morehead Scholarship came along and I went to UNC. I painted through my college years and never stopped. My paintings were exhibited at Mahler Fine Art in downtown Raleigh several years ago. People were kind enough to come and see them. Then I put them back under the bed in the guest bedroom at home where they belong and where they will stay until my children are forced to deal with them one day down the road. It has been a wonderful hobby and very relaxing pastime. Anyone can do it, just get some watercolor paints and a few brushes and start. That is all there is to it. WBF

MY PASSION: YOGA AND HEALTHY LIVING

IT’S HARD FOR ME TO CALL WORKING OUT MY PASSION – it’s more like my alternative to Xanax. Actually, that’s exactly what it is.

In 2014, a couple of months into being a new mom, I told my obstetrician that I was feeling waves of anxiety (little did I know, postpartum anxiety is real).

Without too much back and forth, she wrote me a prescription, “just in case you need it.” I knew working out gave me the mental clarity and stamina I needed, I just hadn’t found my new routine yet. When I focused on finding the time to move, my anxiety seemed to dissipate.

The mantra of “let’s move” has stuck with me through both a second child and, over the past year, breast cancer treatments. How I move, how long I move and where I move may look different from day to day, but I make time for it. The benefits are far too precious than for me to sit out.

Since 2011, right after taking the bar exam, I found that hot yoga gave me the challenge I needed to reduce stress. I enjoyed it so much that I became a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200) in 2013. Eventually, I added HIIT (high-intensity interval training) to my regimen. Being able to challenge my endurance always gives me a reason to work hard. I’m only competing with myself.

My goal is to grow stronger with whatever I do – be it work, exercise, etc. If I can be a little bit better than I was the day before, other things in life will fall into place. I also have two sets of little eyes watching my every move. If I want my girls to grow up taking their own physical and mental health seriously, then I know where it needs to start -- with me. WBF

MY PASSION: ALPACAS AT WISOLINA FARM

WISOLINA FARM BEGAN IN 2014, when my wife Diane and I purchased a defunct horse farm located between Wake Forest and Rolesville. We both had a passion for and backgrounds in agriculture.

We wanted to keep agriculture in the area alive and available for the public to interact with and enjoy. We also wanted to help educate the public about agriculture and where our food and fiber come from.

We started with beef cows and chickens, and the alpacas (which are raised for their fiber) were added by surprise, when we visited a farm in Virginia looking to buy a “guard llama” to protect our cows from coyotes.

We left with a llama and eight alpaca. At that point, I had never worked with alpacas a day in my life, but I have learned and continue to learn more every day. Working with the alpacas takes time and is work, but it is also calming and enjoyable. Think of all the things you do not like about dealing with problem clients. Working with alpacas is the complete opposite. We love the farm life and working with the animals. Even on the worst day, it is, as Mark Perry says, “same feces, different species”.

Doing what you love is rewarding, and interacting with such a calming force on a daily basis adds a richness to life money can not buy. We also deal with the public on a regular bases, by doing farm tours, weddings, birthday and other parties, classes, running a farm store and more, all with an educational component.

Alpacas are calm, curious and Dr. Seusslooking animals. Bring your family and friends to visit. The alpacas are looking forward to meeting you! WBF

MY PASSION: WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

MY PASSION IS WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE! Before I became an Assistant Attorney General at the North Carolina Department of Justice, I was an Assistant District Attorney in New Hanover and Pender Counties for almost six years where I prosecuted cases ranging from speeding tickets to first-degree murder. I handled a number of challenging caseloads including DWI and Drug Treatment Court, Felony Domestic Violence and Juvenile Court. On an almost daily basis, I saw the consequences young people faced when they had little to no direction and no positive role models in their lives. I began volunteering with Teen Court and Youth Court which are both diversionary programs to help first-time offenders stay out of the formal court system and instead receive a constructive sentence set by their peers. In addition, I started volunteering with one of the local Boys & Girls Club chapters and joined their leadership team. I also spoke regularly at schools, church youth groups and after school programs about good citizenship, decision making and goal-setting.

When I moved to Raleigh last summer, I was starting a new position in a new city, but I knew I wanted to continue nurturing my passion and work with young people. I quickly started volunteering with the Capital City Lawyers Association and assisted with their Youth Law Day in August 2018 which gave middle school and high school students an opportunity to learn about the criminal justice system and the different roles within it. I’ve been a Career Connections speaker at Wake Young Men’s Leadership Academy twice over the last few months where I discussed my career path with groups of eager young men in middle school and high school. In September 2018, I was honored to be a panelist for the She Rocks Teen Empowerment and Business Expo in Wilmington where I talked about overcoming challenges in a male-dominated profession and the importance of having a vision. This past January, I was a featured speaker at the Girls Rocking in the South (“G.R.I.T.S.”) Power Girl Conference, also in Wilmington, where I helped young girls create vision boards. Most recently, I was a panelist at the Black Law Students Association (“BLSA”) Professional Retreat during MLK Weekend.

My passion for working with young people is as hot as ever and shows no signs of cooling off. This month, I will be participating in a college and career fair in Wilmington. Next month, I will be returning to my birthplace, Kinston, where I will be speaking before a group of young ladies at a sorority cotillion ball.

My work with young people has led to many early mornings, late nights, busy Saturdays and lots of miles on my car but I wouldn’t trade it for anything because I’m a strong believer in the scripture, “To whom much is given, much is required.” I was blessed with positive role models in my early life so I feel a strong responsibility to be a role model for the young people in my community. MY PASSION: BACKYARD CHICKENS

BACKYARD CHICKENS WERE NOT MY IDEA. I grew up on a farm in rural Wisconsin and I wanted to be a lawyer, not a farmer. But as things go, I married a law school classmate from Lee County who knew a thing or two about chickens.

We spent the early years of our marriage building our law practices and raising young children. We didn’t have time for hobbies but somewhere along the way Chris started the family tradition of taking the annual Tour d’ Coop of Raleigh’s backyard chickens. He talked about getting chickens for a couple of years before I finally called his bluff and bought a small coop. His dad built us an enclosed run for that coop and we were out of excuses.

We doted on our first flock like first-time parents. We even named them – Dumpling, Sesame, Kung Pao, and Shark Nugget. We spent months manually opening the coop door at sunrise and closing it after sunset, taking turns nudging each other on weekend mornings to “go do the chickens,” until we finally realized the birds are made to live outside and were fine as long as the run stayed secure. The little door now stays open while the run is closed, and we all can sleep a bit longer.

Once you have chickens, it is not long before you “need” other things too. We now have seven laying hens, a compost heap and a vegetable garden in our backyard. We check on the chickens every day but spend more time in the yard on warm evenings and weekends. Chris and the kids help but the chickens have become mostly my project because it’s a peaceful break from practicing family law to be outside watering plants, filling feeders, gathering eggs and watching our flock of gently clucking birds scratch in the yard. I don’t think about work or clients or deadlines while I’m watching for hawks or turning the compost heap.

I get immense satisfaction from watching the garden grow, harvesting vegetables and gathering eggs. I’ve discovered that heirloom tomatoes fresh from your own garden are the most delicious food in the world. I’ve grown closer to my neighbors as I spend more time in the yard, chatting over the fence or delivering our extra eggs. I’ve watched my city-raised kids learn to handle chickens and (sort of) muck out a coop. I’ve taken chickens to school for science class and to the NC State Fair! Best of all, I’ve learned that my family often follows me outside when I go out to the yard on a warm day, where my kids will play together on the tree swing and Chris will sit on the patio and talk with me as we watch “chicken tv”: no devices, no distractions, just laughter and sunshine and chickens. MY PASSION: WORKING WITH THE YMCA ACHIEVERS PROGRAM

BY CHASSIDY HINTON | ASSITANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY, WAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE

THE CLARENCE E. LIGHTNER YMCA ACHIEVERS PROGRAM (“YACHIEVERS”) is a program that I have volunteered with for a number of years.

I am also an advisor for our Youth and Government Chapter and a member of the Clarence E. Lightner YMCA Advisory Board. I joined this program back in 2005, as a sophomore at William G. Enloe High School. Held during two Saturdays out of each month, I would attend Y-Achievers, where I became exposed to a great number of adult responsibilities. It was there that I gained innumerable life skills, such as how to interview for a job. I became exposed to other colleges and universities on college tours and I gained knowledge of a variety of careers. I garnered a deeper understanding of what it meant, and looked like, to be a leader. I also became passionate about becoming an attorney. Had it not been for Y-Achievers, I would have never been exposed to Youth and Government, where I was served as a Senator and Representative, learning how the government works and becoming more interested in the law and the importance of diversity in the legal community.

The program has since grown from serving high school students to now serving middle and high school students.

In this program, teenagers are encouraged to give back through use of community service-oriented projects, such as feeding the homeless during Christmas and visiting the elderly in nursing homes. Through discussions and debates about current events, our teenagers become exposed to present issues and are encouraged to speak their opinions and debate with other teenagers in the program.

This program provided financial assistance in college, where I earned a scholarship from the program.

Each year, high school seniors are encouraged to apply for a scholarship that they will be awarded upon graduation. Such award is based on a number of factors, including grades, community and leadership involvement and how active the teenager has been with the program.

Shirley Chisholm once stated, “Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.” I hold this quote dear to my heart. I have continued to serve this program because of how valuable it is to our community. Serving this program as a way to invest in our youth in the same way this program has invested so much into me. I am constantly learning from our teenagers, in finding out what is important to them and what’s going on in this world. I feel that I have been able to use my gifts and talents with our teens, and cultivate a relationship with them, in a way in which I would not have had the opportunity to do otherwise. My experiences with the Clarence E. Lightner YMCA Achievers Program have truly been invaluable.

The Clarence E. Lightner YMCA Achievers Program has become an essential part of my life. From a high school participant, to an adult volunteer, my passion for serving the community continues to remain fulfilled through this program. WBF

MY PASSION: AFRICAN-AMERICAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL

THE SMILES, HUGS AND STORIES OF FAMILIES coming together from all over the country for an amazing weekend in the heart of downtown Raleigh make the countless hours of planning throughout the rest of the year all worth it. This year the African-American Cultural Festival of Raleigh and Wake County will celebrate its 10th anniversary. It is an honor to have led the planning and execution of this event for the past four years as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. I currently serve as the Festival’s Interim Executive Director in lead up to the largest celebration to date. The twoday festival draws tens of thousands of people onto Fayetteville Street to celebrate the history and cultural contributions of African and African-American people across the globe.

My festival story began as a spectator at the 2012 African-American Cultural Festival. The art, live music, dance, food and family-friendly atmosphere left me awestruck. I left the festival that year with a head full of ideas and flickering hope that I could connect with the organization’s leadership to contribute to its success in future years. Two months later, without any outreach or effort on my part, I received an invitation to have lunch with some of the organization’s leaders. They articulated a clear vision of growth along with a desire to include some fresh, innovative young(ish) leaders.

We could have skipped lunch. I would have said “yes” without hesitation over a phone call. Now, seven years later, I remain awestruck at the dedication of the festival staff, board members and volunteers who give tirelessly of themselves for the benefit of the community.

This year’s festival will take place on August 31 and September 1 over Labor Day weekend. The event is free to the public with accessibility options for anyone with physical impairments. You can find more information about the festival at www.aacfestival.org. WBF

OUR PASSION: BARBECUE BARRISTERS

THE PRACTICE OF LAW IS REWARDING, but at times hectic and stressful. We are partners at Ragsdale Liggett who focus primarily on civil defense litigation and both are Campbell law graduates with ACC undergrad ties (UVA and Wake Forest).

We also happen to be brothers-in-law. Five year ago, as Ed was dating Bo’s sister, we discussed our mutual appreciation for being outdoors, slow cooking meat and enjoying cold adult beverages. Barbecue in North Carolina is a conversation starter and a hot topic that can lead to all types of debates... eastern versus western, pulled versus chopped, whole hog versus shoulders. For the record, the correct answer is eastern North Carolina-style, vinegar-based barbecue.

After several break room discussions, we decided to venture beyond tailgating and try our hands at cooking whole hog barbecue. Bo found a gentleman in Johnston County on Craigslist who made homemade pig cookers out of old propane tanks. We pooled our money and purchased one. Things did not exactly get off to a great start as we had to stop at the Tractor Supply in Smithfield to buy new tires on the way home from picking it up.

Since that adventure, we have perfected our sauce, cooked dozens of hogs and slept in parking lots throughout Raleigh. It is not always easy as Mother Nature can sometimes refuse to cooperate. We have cooked in below-freezing temperatures, in tropical storms and in the blazing sun. The weather conditions vary, but the passion for the craft and the fun remain the same.

We have successfully tried our hands at barbecue completions under the name Glencove Farm Barbecue. In fact, we won “Best Butts” and the “People’s Choice Award” in our first competition in 2015. True story, we competed in this event in Ed’s hometown of Boydton, Virginia and have developed a friendly rivalry with the local volunteer fire department. The rivalry is so friendly that one year all of the firefighters showed up wearing T-shirts that said “Even Pigs Don’t Like Lawyers.”

Needless to say, it was especially satisfying beating them (again) that year.

Cooking barbecue has become a passion for many reasons. While obviously a source of good times and camaraderie, it also provides a unique marketing opportunity for clients and potential clients (as well as a great excuse to get out of the office). We have catered entire meals up to 50 for clients and provided barbecue at events for more than 300 guests.

Glencove Farm Barbecue has also provided opportunities to give back to our community. Over the years, we have donated “pig pickins’ for 50” to several silent auctions in town, including the Wake County Bar Association Foundation and our church, Hayes Barton UMC. We have cooked barbecue for the “‘Cue for a Cause” event put on annually by Alliance Medical Ministry.

As noted above, our passion is a family affair. The pig cooker has led to a particularly fun family tradition. We now cook a pig for Bo’s family every Thanksgiving and enjoy a day that starts with a Bojangles run at 5:30 a.m., football and fireside stories throughout the day.

Pig cooking provides us with an opportunity to get away from our desk, enjoy the simple pleasures of watching the smoke roll, stoking the coals and keeping watch over a perfectly set temperature. FIND YOUR PASSION BY CAMILLE STELL | LAWYERS MUTUAL I THOUGHT I’D GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON FINDING MY PASSION. You will recall that last year, Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services was born, partly because I read a book.

The book, “Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life” by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, is described as “a book that shows you how to build – design – a life you can thrive in, at any age or stage.”

As I read the book, I began to think about my next phase. Other than high school and college jobs, I’ve spent my entire professional life in legal. I’ve always thought that life after Lawyers Mutual could include a consulting practice. I love mentoring, coaching and matching legal professionals in the right jobs and the right careers, and my passion is connecting with people and connecting them to each other. David Kelley, the founder of Stanford’s design school, says you often have to go through the wild ideas to get to the actionable good ideas. My copy of the book and my spiral notebook (that hasn’t left my side since March 2018) are full of wild ideas, and Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services was born of that brainstorming.

I am having so many interesting conversations with people. I am talking with lawyers about what their retirement plans will look like. I am talking with law firm leaders and managing partners about how to be servant leaders in their organizations and how to redesign their law firms for 21st century lawyers and clients. I am talking with young lawyers about how to build inspiring law practices that feed their families, but also feed their souls.

Bill and Dave share ideas in the book and on their website for personal practices that help them sustain a well-designed life. During this season of developing a new business idea, I often have to remind myself of good self-care habits. They include healthy eating, frequent exercise with a focus on walking outside in the fresh air, and making time for family and friends. No matter where you are in the process of building a well-lived, joyful life, developing personal practices of self-care and promoting creativity are essential.

One of the principles of design thinking is “fail fast and fail forward,” meaning before you have invested all your energy into the one big thing, design and try incrementally and if you fail, let that failure move you forward in your pursuit. The first law firm proposal I sent out in November 2018 was met with silence. No response, no follow-up calls, no return emails. When we finally connected after several weeks, I was able to understand the obstacles. Pricing, scope of services, level of experience – well, basically everything about the proposal. At first, I felt discouraged. But then, I sought out the advice of lawyers and firm administrators I admire and asked them for a huge favor – their time. I ask them to review my proposal and offer feedback. After talking with a dozen people, I went back to the firm and asked them to reconsider my updated proposal. I did a better job of budgeting, I presented a tighter scope of services, I developed a lengthy bio and I offered to meet them in person at no cost to get to know each other.It was a success! I had my first consulting client. Since then, I’ve sent out many more proposals and I’ve had many more meetings and conversations. Every one of these gets a little easier.

But doing something new is scary. And getting rejected is frightening. I wondered if I had made a mistake? I wondered if Lawyers Mutual would hire me back if the consulting business failed? I wondered if I was set for financial failure and would lose my car and my house and my self-respect? Do you think I’m being dramatic? Probably not, because many of you want to try something new and you have the same fears and questions.I started working on the new business in March 2018, formed the legal entity in September, launched the business on October 1, and retained my first client in February 2019. I didn’t make money in 2018. I may not make money in 2019. I’m lucky that I have a founding company that is supporting the subsidiary financially. But that doesn’t mean there is no pressure. I report to the president and Board of Directors of Lawyers Mutual and I don’t want to fail them.

You understand that.

But I can also tell you this has been the most exhilarating time of my career. I am humbled daily by the positive feedback I get and by how many people are in my corner, cheering me on and genuinely wanting to see my success.

You can also find your passion. You can do it by reading a book, taking a class, hiring a life coach, hiring me. You can buy a spiral notebook and start asking yourself the tough questions: • • • •

How do I find a job that I like where I can fit in?

How do I build my career, my law practice and develop clients and referral sources?

How do I balance my career with the rest of my life?

How do I know when it’s time to wind down my career?

I want to know what you are doing to find your passion. I want to encourage you along the way. I want you to find your coach, mentor or cheerleader who will make you feel as special as you have made me feel. Let me know if I can help you get there. WBF

quite the opposite. I always walk away from our memorial sessions feeling uplifted and inspired. You can download them on around them. But that’s only one type of story. your phone, tablet or e-reader.”

I guess we should not be surprised, really. After all, as lawyers, we are a profession of self-publishers; we just may not know it yet. Consider this - if I asked you to take a minute to think about someone from your past who exemplified professionalism, who would that be? Perhaps it’s a former boss who taught you how to properly handle a difficult situation. Maybe it’s a co-worker who not only offered her perspective, but offered to jump right into your case and do some grunt work to help meet a deadline. Or maybe it’s an opposing counsel from early in your career who kindly pointed out your procedural mistake and offered additional time to correct course before proceeding. Whoever it is, I bet you have a story.

If I asked you to take a minute to think about someone from your past who exemplified an unprofessional demeanor, who would that be? I’m sure that more than a few folks come to mind.

As lawyers, we are held to the highest standard in both our professional and personal lives, and we are members of a very visible profession. Whether we like it or not, each day, every action, every interaction, every reaction writes another page in our story. We are self-publishing the tales of our own professionalism and someday, our stories will be told. Maybe it will be told at a future committee meeting, at an informal event or at a memorial session. Maybe you’ll hear that someone told your story, or maybe you won’t. DIRECT EXAMINATION: GABE JIMENEZ DIRECT EXAMINATION IS THE FIRST opportunity for the jury to meet a witness. An effective lawyer will use the opportunity to personalize the witness, making the witness appear both likeable and credible. At the end of the day, the direct examination is a party’s best chance to tell his or her story.

1. When you were in elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Anything that did not have homework! I dreamt of being a pro athlete, but given my physical limitations I thought I would be a physical therapist/trainer for a pro sports team. I liked the idea with working directly with individuals in need and helping them get back on their feet and achieve their goals.

2. What was the most important lesson your parents taught you?

The importance of an education and hard work. My parents came over to the U.S. as teenagers, feeling communism in Cuba. They knew very little English, had no money and were without their parents. Thankfully the Catholic Church placed them with volunteer foster parents for the first few years. They studied extremely hard in their new American schools and ended up being admitted to colleges, where they earned higher degrees. If they can accomplish that, I certainly have no excuses!

3. Who was your favorite teacher and why?

Coach Richard Stuart! He was my P.E. teacher for a few years of middle school and then my football and track coach during high school. He stressed sportsmanship and hard work over everything else. He knew that how we treat others and giving your best effort were lessons that would serve us well in everything we would go on to do in life.

4. Did you love or hate law school?

WOW, tough one but I’ll say love. I very much enjoyed the style of classroom debate and learning that most professors employed. I loved the collegiality amongst like-minded classmates. Occasionally, I hated the poor judgment that a few classmates demonstrated when hiding law library books essential to research projects or just acting like Jackalopes. I feel some of that behavior was a byproduct of the overly competitive environment and a “C” curve being applied to 200 students whom averaged an A+ in undergraduate. Just wacky.

5. What was your most embarrassing courtroom experience?

Easy, during my first trial in North Carolina back in 2000. Despite the judge’s repeated objections, (yes at one point opposing counsel stopped objecting and the judge was directly objecting for them) I kept asking my witness the same question about four times. I acted pretty stubborn I guess, but most embarrassed that my then-boss and entire office heard about it before I even made it back to the office!

6. What was your best courtroom experience?

Every time my client gives me a heartfelt thank you for standing up for them.

7. Why did you become a lawyer?

I felt that a law degree had a lot of flexibility and would give me the tools to work in various jobs until I found one that I’d like. Ultimately, helping people in need find solutions to their problems is something rewarding and satisfying.

8. What has been the most surprising or unexpected development in your career?

Moving to North Carolina in 1999 only to discover a large Spanish-speaking population that was being underserved and needed legal assistance. My Spanish language fluency gave me wonderful employment and volunteer opportunities early in my career.

11. What is your hidden talent?

Coaching. I may not be the best with technique but I absolutely love to help young athletes in a variety of sports get the most out of their talents with mental and physical preparation. I also LOVE to play USTA league tennis and snowboard with my family, but far from “talented” at either.

12. Who are your real life heroes?

My wife. She is the smartest and most caring person I have ever met in my life. I am truly blessed to have her as my partner in life! (She is not an attorney, so she won’t even see this in the Flyer.)

13. When and where were you happiest?

Right now! I am thankful to have plenty of work to keep me busy, but also plenty of flexibility to spend quality time with my family. I am working to live, not living to work.

WCBA MEMBER NEWS Congratulations to WCBA members Cheri Beasley and Mark Davis on their recent appointments with the NC Supreme Court. Justice Beasley was invested as the 29th Chief Justice on

March 7, and serves as the first African-American woman Chief Justice in the state’s history. Justice Davis was invested as an Associate Justice on April 3, and serves as the firstever Jewish member of the NC Supreme Court.

BarCARES is provided cost-free to members of bar groups that establish a BarCARES program. A number of judicial district and local bars, law schools and other bar related groups across the state have already chosen to offer this program.

BarCARES of North Carolina, Inc, (BCNC) is a nonprofit corporation that works to expand the program to attorneys throughout North Carolina, and it monitors the overall BarCARES program operation. BarCARES, endorsed by the North Carolina Bar Association, is made possible by funding from bar groups that establish a BarCARES program, BCNC, the North Carolina Bar Association and its Foundation, and Lawyers Insurance Agency.

BarCARES can be used for problems such as: Personal Issues • crisis intervention • depression and anxiety • substance abuse (drug or alcohol) • financial concerns • career counseling

Family Issues • marriage or relationship issues • children or adolescents • parenting • family conflict

Work Functions • professional stressors • course related stress • conflict resolution

BarCARES provides members of established programs in judicial districts, bar associations, law schools and organizations up to three free visits each year. In some programs the visits may be available to family members.

BarCARES Initiative extends a statewide program offer to any member of the NCBA who lives in an area where BarCARES is not yet available. This is a one-time benefit of three sessions under the program. You may contact the BarCARES Coordinator for information about which BarCARES services are available to you.

BarCARES sessions can be used to provide assistance in resolving problems or accessing the appropriate source of help. Sometimes three sessions will be enough to take care of a problem. If it looks like the problem may require a longer term solution, the initial visits may be used to help identify the problem, to develop goals and a plan, and to access an appropriate resource, often covered under your health insurance plan. Every effort will be made for you to see a counselor who is also an approved provider under your group insurance in the event you wish to continue after the program visits are used.

BarCARES is a confidential program, no one will know if you access the program but you and anyone you choose to tell. No personally identifiable information is shared with the BarCARES Board; the associated state, local voluntary or judicial district bar association; or any other entity without the permission of the BarCARES client/ user. Additionally, any health related information included in the sessions will follow federal HIPAA Privacy & Security Rules as stated in HRC’s HIPAA Privacy & Security statement.
