TheWCAteamisbusierthanever.GiventhatApril isbothSexualAssaultAwarenessMonthand ChildAbusePreventionMonth,wehaveseveral newinitiativesthismonththatwehopewillbring evenmoreattentiontotheseissues.
OnTuesday,April2nd,westartedthemonthby havingmanyofourpartnersparticipatein“Paint theTownTeal”--lightinguptheirbuildingsto showsupporttosexualassaultsurvivors.Onthe sameday,weparticipatedinapressconference hostedbytheAdaCountyVictimServicesCenter todemonstratestatewidesolidarityandproclaim AprilSexualAssaultAwarenessMonthandChild AbusePreventionMonthintheStateofIdaho.
InadditiontoDenimDayonApril24,anewcampaignweareparticipatingin thisyearisTheBandanaProject,designedtoraiseawarenessofworkplace sexualviolenceamongourfarmworkercommunity.
Asweseetheoverallnumberofcallstoourhotlinecontinuetorise,the numberofcallsrelatedtosexualassaulthasincreasedbyanevengreater percentage.Lastmonth,theaveragenumberofofsexualassaultcalls comingtoourhotlineeachmonthwas15;duringthefirstquarterofthisyear, thataveragehasincreasedto26--a73%increase.Myhopeisthatthe billboardshighlightingourhotlinenumber,madepossiblebyourCorporate Pillar,LamarAdvertising,ishelpingreassuresurvivorsofsexualassaultthat

TheWCAwasextremelyfortunatetohostvolunteerMeganMcMullenforthe monthofFebruaryasapartofCitiBank’sGivingBackLeaveprogram.Megan detailedherexperienceattheWCA,excerptsofwhicharesharedbelow. IhavebeenpassionateabouttheWCAfor manyyears.Beingadomesticabusesurvivor whowasaclientoftheWCAsparkedmy passionfortheorganizationandthecritical workthattheydo.Itishardtoputmy experience...intowords.Theteamwasso thankfultohaveavolunteeravailableforan extendedperiod.Mostvolunteerscome annuallyassociatedwithaneventwhileothers maycomeforafewhoursperweek.Theytook advantageofhavingmefulltime.
Iorganizedandcleanedthefoodpantryandin-kinddonations.Icreated hygienekitsforfamiliescomingintotheirshelter.Iassistedwithan awardsgalatheyhost,collaboratingwithCorporatePillarsandhonorees tohelpcompleteallthestepsneededpriortotheevent.Ihelpedwith WCAMissiontours,participatedinprojectplanningfortheIdahoGives fundraisingcampaignandthelistgoeson.Iwasincludedinteam meetingsandbrainstorming.IfeltlikeIwasmakingadifferenceandthey wereexcitedtohearanoutsideperspective.
IspentseveraldaysinthebasementoftheWCAgoingthroughboxes, cleaningshelves,separatingmaterials,labelingbins,andorganizing.I
haveneverfeltmoreappreciatedforwhatIthoughtwasasmalltaskand theysaideverytimetheycomeintotheroom,theywillthinkofme.
