It has been an honor to serve as board president during our Centennial year. We have made great strides in recognizing the positive role men can play in the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault, both as survivors and in helping their partners on the journey through healing to find freedom.

I’m also proud to have steered the WCA through a very austere era.

The recent years have been lean, and we’ve had to tighten our belts like everyone else. Despite this, our supporters have remained dedicated to our mission and continue to support the work WCA does in providing safety, healing and freedom.

Our new vision positions the WCA well for the next 100 years. Along with growing numbers of dedicated individuals, supportive businesses and like-minded strategic partners, the future looks bright as we work together to foster a community where individuals thrive in safe, healthy and productive relationships.

1 Women’s and Children’s Alliance

The past year has been a pivotal one for us here at the WCA. Like the rest of our state and our nation, we are emerging from the financial crisis ready to grow – with your help.

I was honored to unveil the beautiful “Taking Flight” sculpture created by the Boise Sculptors Guild as the final event of our Centennial celebration year in October of 2011. This beautiful piece of public art celebrates the metamorphosis of our clients as they seek safety and healing on a journey to freedom.

The artist was inspired by this quote: “We’ll be your chrysalis but growth comes from within. Then you can fly like a butterfly.”

The Treasure Valley community reacted swiftly when the butterfly was stolen – not once, but twice – last spring. People were horrified that such an important symbol of the work we do was torn away in the dead of night.

But like our clients and like the butterfly itself, we will not allow one person to alter our vision. We continue to work to restore “Taking Flight” and will take steps to replace and protect this symbol of our work.

As difficult and disheartening as this experience was for us, community support for the statue has helped us focus our vision and helped us recognize how we can better communicate what we do – with words, images and symbols that resonate with everyone.

This publication tells the story of our own metamorphosis, which we could not have done without your support. Thank you!

HOTLINES

Safety

The WCA’s two 24-hour crisis lines are the first critical step for people seeking safety. Staffed by client advocates familiar with a variety of community services, this is the place for people with questions for themselves or for friends and loved ones.

Hotline Statistics: • Answered 1,397 calls • 205 were sexual assault related • 1,192 were domestic violence related

SAFE SHELTER For people leaving an abusive relationship, safety is their most important priority.

At the heart of our efforts is a secure shelter and transitional housing which provide 75 beds for women and children. Client advocates guide residents through their transition. The WCA offers an array of programs including individual counseling, case management, parenting and support groups.

Shelter Statistics: • 74 women were housed for 4,639 bed nights.

• 82 children were housed for 3,644 bed nights.

COURT ADVOCACY & SAFETY PLANNING Not all of our clients need secure shelter. Some find safety with family or friends and many with the support of a protection order obtained in court. Court advocates provide support and guidance about court proceedings and make referrals to help clients who need legal assistance.

Court Advocacy and Safety Planning Statistics: • 509 protection order petitioners were assisted, 89 percent of all orders filed in Ada County • 640 individuals attended 263 exparte orientation sessions • 305 individuals attended 296 safety planning sessions • 70 individuals were guided by WCA Victim Attorney Services and 40 were referred to legal assistance programs.

Healing COUNSELING Counseling is where healing begins for most clients. Whether it’s a weekly support group or individual counseling, the WCA offers survivors master’slevel clinicians trained in offering a variety of approaches that best help clients on the road to healing.

WCA provides services that help individuals recover from the trauma of witnessing abuse as a child or child sexual assault. Survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence are empowered to rebuild strong relationships with their children and with themselves as they learn how to create the life they’ve always dreamed of having.

Counseling Statistics • Clinicians conducted 2,045 sessions for adults and 340 sessions for children • Sadly, each month an average of 35 adults and 27 children awaited counseling • WCA has four full-time clinicians, one part-time clinician, one master’slevel intern and one psychiatric resident intern.

Freedom CASE MANAGEMENT Survivors face many obstacles before they can truly be free of domestic or sexual abuse and its insidious hold on their spirit and their lives. The WCA has two full-time case managers who help guide clients to community resources that provide them with choices to rebuild their lives. Whether it’s health care, employment, food or housing, case managers know how to access the supportive services that create the Treasure Valley’s safety net.

Case Management Statistics • More than 934 sessions • An average of 10 clients each month waiting for assistance • After receiving case management services, 68 percent of clients obtained safe housing and 45 percent obtained employment.

EDUCATION Classes in nurturing parenting styles, financial literacy and breaking the cycle of domestic violence are among the many educational sessions available to WCA clients. Basic life skills, such as routine automobile maintenance and how to fix nutritious meals, also are available.

The Treasure Valley Economic Action Program, comprised of six agencies, provides much-needed programs about budgeting, saving, investing and using credit effectively. All courses are designed to empower individuals and provide the tools they need to create the life they want for themselves and their family.

Education Statistics • 117 clients took financial literacy courses and 74 have graduated • WCA clients attended 219 life skills sessions • Topics for life courses included: job search, self care, health, nutrition, time management, healthy communication and meditation.
