Timing and combinations of doses for AstraZeneca

Fully vaccinated with AstraZeneca

Consumers who have received two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine given 4 to 12 weeks apart are considered fully vaccinated. A shorter dose interval of more than 4 weeks and less than 8 weeks apart, is recommended in an outbreak to provide earlier protection.

AstraZeneca as a booster dose

Consumers who have received other COVID-19 vaccines (such as Pfizer), should receive the AstraZeneca vaccine at least 28 days after the most recent dose of another COVID-19 vaccine for the primary series.

Pfizer is the preferred booster vaccine in New Zealand. However, consumers who meet the AstraZeneca eligibility criteria (outlined in the Programme’s AstraZeneca policy statement) can receive AstraZeneca as a booster dose a minimum of 3 months (93 days) following completion of a primary vaccine course. The AstraZeneca vaccine may be concomitantly administered at any time before, after, or at the same time as influenza, MMR, HPV, Diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis and other vaccines. A 7-day interval, before or after administering the AstraZeneca vaccine is advised for the liveattenuated shingles vaccine (Zostavax).
