At the opening of museum Beelden aan Zee in 1994 nobody could have imagined that Wim Quist’s noble spaces would one day serve as a temporary home for a menagerie of exotic, bronze animals. After all, the human figure was, albeit in retrospect, the governing theme for the collection of modern art that the museum’s founders Theo and Lida Scholten had amassed since 1965 and made public in 1994. There had indeed been animal figures among these hundreds of sculptures, but they were deaccessioned and dispersed among family and friends. Arthur Spronken, one of the museum’s ‘house sculptors’, whose fame rests upon dynamic, monumental bronze horses, neatly solved the problem by adding a human torso to one of the sculptures. Since then, the human figure has remained the starting point for the expansion of the collection, but in the exhibitions programme we have permitted ourselves the freedom to document the enormous diversity of modern and contemporary international sculpture. For the time being sculpture remains an inexhaustible wellspring for the only museum in the Netherlands devoted exclusively to this discipline. The depiction of animals is a historical, iconographic

phenomenon within sculpture, and one that still flourishes. It has made an international star of Damien Hirst, and the colourful exhibition at coda in Apeldoorn at the end of 2009 showed just how many prominent Dutch sculptors have an eye for animal subjects. Alongside this conceptually imbued Postmodern figuration there lives another tradition that seems to have leapfrogged the cacophony of modernisms around 1910 and which seeks its contemporaneity in a subtle stylisation that does little injustice to the naturalism of the subject. As different as they may be, both these directions have their roots in the romantic spectacle of animals that began to appear in the drawing rooms of the Parisian middle classes in the 1830s. The French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye is the patriarch of Western animal sculpture. He was the first of the so-called Animaliers, the group of French – and later Belgian, German and Italian – artists whose sculptures of exotic animals enjoyed great popularity with the public in the second half of the nineteenth century. Barye was preceded in his fascination with wild animals by painters such as Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix. Their romantic depictions of animals were typified by a realistic approach in which the wild animal was represented for the first time as a subject in its own right, in its natural – preferably emotive – state. A prerequisite for this approach was the availability of living examples supplied by urban zoos, the majority of which were founded in the first half of the nineteenth century. Before this time artists had had to make do with the live models in the stables of shipyards and circuses. The collections established by the zoological societies in the first half of the nineteenth century were – like the railways, the concert halls and city parks – typical products of modern bourgeois society. The wealthy vanguard threw their capital, organisational talent and enthusiasm behind such initiatives for the benefit of all. One such society was the Koninklijk Zoölogisch Genootschap Natura Artis Magistra, which was founded in 1838 in Amsterdam, counted numerous artists among its members and administered various collections: stuffed and pickled specimens, ethnographica, a library and livestock. The latter provided the direct source of inspiration for the Animaliers, who set up their modelling stands on the safe side of the fence.

est mort’, wrote Delacroix to his friend Barye upon the death of the lion at the Jardin des Plantes. Now that the giant had fallen they would have to work as quickly as possible before the professor inserted his scalpel in the carcass. Getting this close to the fearsome model was, after all, only possible on the dissecting table. The artists were tipped off by the keepers – men of scant means – with whom they developed a close bond. In exchange for the tip-offs, and for fiercely coveted treasures such as skulls and teeth, claws and hides that found their way to their studios, the artists paid gratuities that were a welcome addition to the keepers’ meagre income. The Animaliers’ scientific aspirations, which were expressed in a highly realistic approach based upon a sound knowledge of anatomy, were coloured by a romantic preference for exotic, often bloodthirsty scenes. The choice of combatants was, given the geographical spread, almost limitless: tigers with crocodiles, crocodiles with antelope, lions with snakes, rhinoceros with gharials, pumas with turkeys, and so on. Every now and then the role of the victim was played by a native who stood not the least chance of success. On one occasion it was even a famous courtesan – Apollonie Sabatier – who abandoned herself to a composition in which she fell foul of the bite of a miniscule snake. Femme piquée par un serpent (Woman bitten by a snake) by the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger (1814-1883), which was the sensation of the 1847 Salon and can today be seen at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, is entirely within the Animalier tradition. While it is true that the sculpture is not executed in bronze and the snake is practically swamped beneath the voluptuous body of the woman who owes her eternal fame to a single night spent with Baudelaire, nonetheless the theme, the scale and the detailed elaboration of the composition on the oval plinth demonstrate that the Animaliers’ principles had penetrated the world of the so-called Statuaires or large sculpture. All these gruesome scenes were cast in bronze in handy formats and published in numbered editions and found their way to the sideboards and mantelpieces of the better French households. Monumental versions of these animal groups were unveiled in the parks and zoos initiated by the same bourgeoisie: explosions of glistening cast bronze which can still be seen today in the zoos in Paris and Antwerp, on the forecourt of the Musée d’Orsay, in the Jardin du Luxembourg and in numerous other places

in France and Belgium. Animal sculpture entered a new phase after 1900 when the various tendencies within modernism got to grips with the theme. Naturalism, exoticism and passion made way for a more detached approach in which the animal was presented as a solitary creature – a plastic form in space – with a focus on its decorative qualities. The centre shifted from Paris to Antwerp, where Rembrandt Bugatti would become the leading figure. In Paris it was François Pompon who incorporated the rules of modern classicism in his animal sculptures, while August Gaul ‘modernised’ animal sculpture in Germany. This exhibition at museum Beelden aan Zee devotes attention to both phases within the development of Animalier sculpture. The idea for this first museum survey of the art of the Animaliers in the Netherlands came from Frans van Rijckevorsel. The exhibition concept was elaborated in close consultation with this passionate collector of animal bronzes. Van Rijckevorsel has furnished us with access to the select circle of collectors in this field and has contributed a lively account of his experiences as a collector to this catalogue. This project would not have been possible without the active cooperation and considerable support of two firms who have for many years distinguished themselves internationally within this special branch of sculpture: the Sladmore Gallery in London (Edward Horsewell, Nina Knowlton) and Univers du Bronze in Paris (Alain Richarme). Another collector who has provided essential assistance is Hein Leverstein. The Belgian art historian Paul Verbraeken is a specialist in this area. He has written the general introductory essay for the catalogue and has proved invaluable in sourcing the Antwerp component of the exhibition. Dick van Broekhuizen, a member of the curatorial staff of the Sculpture Institute, coordinated the project and has written about the social context of the Animaliers at the time of the July Monarchy. He was ultimately responsible for the selection and installation, assisted by Caroline Wynaendts who recently gained her ba in the history of art at Leiden University on this subject. Volunteer Carl van Laer took charge of coordination during the installation of the exhibition. Art historian Nelleke van Zeeland undertook the editing of the catalogue and art historian student Karin van der Kooy has put in a sterling performance by carefully documenting and illustrating all the exhibited works

Animaliers in Europees perspectief Animaliers in European Perspective Paul Verbraeken

One will not come across the word ‘Animalier’ in Dutch-language reference works, nor in English or German sources. It is, nevertheless, a well-defined art-historical concept that has been in global use for more than a century. French dictionaries and encyclopaedia offer the following definition: ‘Animalier: peintre, sculpteur d’animaux’. It is an evident Gallicism, based on the Latin animal. The term Animalier was coined in Paris at the beginning of the nineteenth century when painters and sculptors began to specialise in the representation of animals. For centuries before artists had depicted animals in all manner of compositions, including hunting and battle scenes, fables and biblical scenes, etc. Certain animals had even taken on a symbolic meaning, as is clear in heraldry. For example, a lion expresses the concept of power and a snake represents danger and by extension all that is negative. Numerous studies were published on animal symbolism and this knowledge was part of the academic curriculum for young artists. Gradually almost all animals became associated with one or even more symbolic meanings: a dog, for example, represents loyalty but may also stand for gluttony.

pau l v e r br a e k e n

A lamb might represent innocence, but also symbolises Christ’s sacrifice. A (crowing) cockerel represents vigilance, but is also the symbol of Gallic identity. In short, the depiction of animals simply for their beauty was for centuries at odds with an intellectual and moralising tradition that was accustomed to using double meanings. For example, an extinguished candle in a painting or print was not merely an extinguished candle but was a veiled reference to the fleeting nature of life. A set of scales was not simply a tool, but a symbol of justice. Such intellectual devices permeate the whole of Western civilisation and are perhaps best known to us from the Emblemata literature of for instance Jacob Cats. The widespread changes wrought by the French Revolution had a liberating effect on the arts. Engrained academic traditions could no longer resist new developments nor adequately respond to a society in rapid flux. There were new demands, which were met by a new kind of artist, which for the sake of convenience we might call an autodidact: someone who chose to follow his own creativity rather than the classical path. It was no longer historical or literary themes but everyday reality that inspired increasing numbers of artists to take up their brush, chisel or pen. The term beauty was given a new meaning, freed from classical norms and ideals. The age-old hierarchy of genres was overturned and any motif could now serve as the subject for an artistic creation. Natural phenomena and the local region were favourite themes for addressing a growing public. Part and parcel of this development was the urge to introduce the peculiar beauty of animals as a motif in its own right. Strangely enough, this occurred first with exotic and only later with domestic animals: tigers and crocodiles preceded our cows and rams. Furthermore, this occurred at first in an urban context thanks to initiatives that led to the establishment of zoological gardens in the first half of the nineteenth century. It was in the so-called Jardin des Plantes in Paris, which in addition to caged animals also contained (and still contains) a museum of natural history, where the seed of the Animalier genre was sown. The pioneer of this new artistic school that would spread from France across the whole of Europe was the son of a Parisian goldsmith.

The young Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875) frequently sought inspiration for his jewels and decorative objects at the Jardin des Plantes. He was extremely talented and won the Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1820. From around 1830 he began to depict the zoo’s lions and panthers, buffalo and reptiles as independent sculptures. The anatomy and specific character of these animals formed the starting point for his sculptures, which quickly provoked differences of opinion. Such extremely realistic show pieces had never previously been exhibited. Barye preferred to depict his models in action: stalking, jumping or fighting. The combination of romantic drama and stirring realism caught on and was imitated throughout France. Artists such as Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910), Christophe Fratin (1801-1864), Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879), Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), her brother Isidore Bonheur (1827-1901) and Auguste Cain (1822-1894) became the leading representatives of the Animalier genre that became extremely popular towards the middle of the nineteenth century. French museums acquired works by the Animaliers and the State commissioned large realistic animal groups to decorate parks and squares. And so the genre’s continuity was ensured across generations of Animaliers who circulated their sculptures, often in large editions. The appropriate material for these sculptures was bronze, which thanks to the reintroduction of the lost-wax casting technique allowed the reproduction of the finest details from the plaster model. Many of the Animaliers attempted to outdo each other in terms of faithfulness to nature, not only in relation to the anatomy and posture of the modelled animal but also as regards the specific structure of the hide, fur, feathers etc. They even strove to emulate colour effects by means of subtle patina processes. The combination of the perfected bronze casting technique with their own outstanding craftsmanship ensured sculptors such as Alfred Dubucand (1828-1894), Paul-Edouard Delabrière (1829-1912), Ferdinand Pautrot (1832-1874), Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) and Clovis Masson (18381913) a solid reputation. A subsequent generation of French Animaliers gradually renewed the genre and introduced it to the stylistic developments of the twentieth century. These include Charles Valton (1851-1918), Prosper Lecourtier
