Welcome to our third edition of Latitude 41 Our aim is to bring you more insight into your club, its people and events. We welcome and encourage your contributions of photos, editorial content and suggestions and hope you enjoy this issue.

A big welcome to Natasha Mason our new Club Manager.

Natasha joins Julia (Floss) in the office and is replacing Anna. Tash comes from a strong office administration background and is keen to get settled in and to come to grips with the role.

It’s a big job and definitely takes some time to get the juggling skills up to speed. We trust you will show Tash the same support you have given our previous managers during what has proven to be a rather challenging year!

All about Tash…. here’s the bit we all dislike doing - writing about ourselves…

Hi, my name is Natasha Mason, but feel free to call me Tash. Born on the West Coast of the South Island, I moved with my family to Blenheim in 1990.

Working for the Marlborough District Council, I started in administration and moved to Building Consent Applications. From there I was the Assistant Manager for Tranz Link Refrigerated, running Blenheim and Nelson depots.

After starting a family I chose to reduce my hours. Working in an admin position for Mighty Mix Dog Food, the hours grew more than Iwas able to commit and they needed a full time person so I became the Caretaker at Redwoodtown School for a short term. Lastly, I was Office Administrator at Haack Construction until I went on maternity leave.

I have been very fortunate to have been a stay at home mum for the past 11 years.

My partner George works in Forestry driving a skidder. I have an 18 year old daughter who works at Mitre 10, and I have a 10 year old son who starts Bohally next year.

We have 2 Rottweiler dogs and a cat.

One of my biggest accomplishments , 18 months ago I undertook the design, project management and building of our new house in Grovetown (under the supervision of a Licensed Building Practitioner).

It was inevitable that one day, I would need to get back into the workforce.

When I heard about this position, I was intrigued. I do enjoy a challenge, and I know I have a lot to learn. I have already met some really lovely people and I am excited to see where this new chapter of my life takes me.

MEET YOUR EXECUTIVE Rear Commodore Cruising Martin Cuthbert (Captain Marty) Known to many of us nowadays as “Captain Marty”, Martin came to NZ twelve years ago with Susie. His life has never been the same ever since. They fell in love with the Marlborough Sounds and decided to stay. Setting up their home as a Guest Lodge at Anakiwa.

Martin was a multi skilled builder, joiner, tiler, plumber, etc in the UK and has now returned to doing renovation works all over NZ. In the UK he specialised in old houses, often working on properties three and four hundred years old.

As a new member of the Executive committee Marty is bringing fresh ideas and incredible enthusiasm. Marty, who was a complete novice became a keen sailor but a knee replacement made sailing difficult. He and Susie now cruise on their boat, “Crusader”. She is a Redeemer 42 launch with 360 hp turbo diesel Iveco engine. As a member of WBC Marty came up with the, now famous idea, of having a Treasure Hunt. He created a fantastic action packed day on the water undertaken by 16 various sized boats. Everyone dressed up as a pirate and had great fun and lots of frustration putting in order Marty’s very cleverly put together clues. We very much look forward to the 2023 Treasure Hunt.

Marty says he would like to see as many folks involved in club activities as possible. He has created a sub-committee for cruising who are putting together ideas for training, such as rubber duckie handling and anchor and stern line management. They have lots of other activities too in the pipe line.Marty challenges everyones’ brains on Friday nights with his short nautical quiz.

He is one of the regular skippers on Ray White and thoroughly enjoys helping set the courses and watching the sailing boats in action. He loves the team camaraderie. He and Ash make a great pair working on improvements to Ray White. The office girls love him because Marty just turns up and “does”. Deanne also has a soft spot for him!

Marty says he is looking forward to the warmer weather arriving so that we can all enjoy the in and on the water activities and raft ups. He hopes to see lots of boats covered in Christmas twinkling lights at the raft up on 10th December.

From Marty - RC Cruising Beach Clean-up Sat 8th October A huge thank you to Midnight, Eliza, Serenity, Maritza and Emmanuel for undertaking the clean up.

I am delighted to report there was actually very little litter and rubbish to collect. I gather the mussel farms and staff from the salmon farms are now undertaking regular beach cleans.

Please can I ask when you are out on the water and visiting a beach that you take a bag or bucket to collect up rubbish. It is one way we can help to protect the wild life and support the environment.

It is proposed to do another beach clean up at the end of the busy summer season, perhaps in March 2023 to see how much rubbish has accumulated.

The bonus of a beach clean is always the social gathering afterwards. Some of the boats met up at Furneaux Lodge for a SkipBo card game tournament, then a lovely meal at Furneaux followed by the successful Black Ferns win against Australia in the opening day of the Womens Rugby World Cup.

Yealands have joined with us to help recognise and show our appreciation to our amazing volunteers, without you we could not run the number or variety of events we do.

Born in Whakatāne to her Canadian parents who were here as part of a government program to help establish the sustainable logging industry in New Zealand. Bernadette grew up in British Columbia, Canada and has 2 sons from her first marriage (John brought a daughter from his).

John and Bern got together in 1992 - married in 1995 - moved to NZ in 1999 - moved to Australia in 2006 and then back to NZ in 2017.

In their time together they have lived on both sides of the equator in 4 countries and we've visited a few more. They have lived in 6 houses, 9 apartments, 2 townhouses and a boat. As well as owning our own places, they have rented, house sat and even spent some time living in the basement of very generous friends!

During the course of their time together they have lived in 7 cities, 3 towns and a village. Locations are as varied as types having lived on the flat, in the mountains, on a river, on 2 harbours, in a Bay, on a beach, on the ocean and by the sea.

John and Bern certainly seem to embrace change having progressed through 21 cars, 3 trucks, 2 vans and 3 boats.

They have watched their 3 children grow into amazing adults and have welcomed 6 absolutely perfect grandchildren into the world.

Having first joined WBC in 1999, and rejoined in 2017. Bernadette is a very willing and talented volunteer on the House committee seemingly able to turn her hand to anything and usually seen in background.

One thing most of you won’t know and is pretty cool, Bernadette has a weekly "cooking show" with the grandsons from Canada. They take turns cooking a meal for the family, with Oma, online. Even one of the other cousins heard so much from the boys he asked to have a turn as well.

Your House Committee members under take numerous different jobs behind the scenes at Waikawa Boating Club. The term ‘House’ is a bit vague but generally refers to anything needing to be achieved either socially or more domestically related. For example we have one member organising all the raffle helpers and greeters on our Friday nights. (We are always looking for additional volunteers.)

We try to keep the garden at the front of the deck clean and tidy and we often answer the call to help the office when needed for stuffing envelopes, collating registration packs etc.

We help at Regattas by serving at tables, collecting glasses, clearing tables. Together with numerous different tasks to support the Regatta Committee in preparation of the events.

Currently we have undertaken the quite mammoth task of re-covering of the wardroom chairs. We hope to have them all completed soon.

If you would like to be part of our fun group please come and join - you too can become a “Hero” in an apron!

cruisING Ash and Marty are running a Boatie Bits stall for the club at the Car Boot Boat Bits Sale and Market Day at the club tomorrow. Please bring your unwanted bits and pieces for them to sell. Funds raised go towards the Club building project.

Beach Clean Up It was really very encouraging to discover not too much rubbish needed to be collected out and around Endeavour Inlet. Thank you to the boats who took part. We will have another session towards the end of the summer season.

Christmas Raft-up This is without doubt the most popular event on the cruising calendar.

Get your lights out and polished, Christmas songs and hats!!!!! his year on Saturday 10th December our Christmas themed raft up on the water will likely be either Flipper Bay or Governors Bay depending on wind direction.

On the day call on VHF 63 to Crusader for the details.

Orphans’ Christmas For those not joining family who would like to have some friendship and fun on the water on Christmas Day. This is likely to be in the Grove Arm area.

Future Plans The Cruising sub-committee are busy with discussions planning a number of events.

SAILING The 2022/23 season is well underway and so far covid is a distant memory!

We are halfway through the Marlborough Sounds Marinas Spring Twilight series and have a consistent 35 to 40 boats racing in the three divisions.

Clear division leaders thus far are: Div 1 Northern Rebel - David Croad Div 2 Cisco - Chris Shaw Div 3 Rawiti - Graeme Ellis The Tempello Thursday night shorthanded series is not quite as well supported but nevertheless some very good racing Div 1 Imagine It - Terry Allen Div 2 Sequin - Bill Crossen Great to see a good crowd back at the club for most Tuesdays with around 40 odd meals being served.

Our ever dependable Mandy Carpenter is spending many hours making sure Ray White is well rostered and for this we as sailors are extremely grateful.

Racing cannot go ahead without our many volunteers. We as a club are so fortunate to have so many willing people.

Ian Gardiner has introduced Sailwave as a recording attribute to our race results. This basically means results are entered and calculated as the boats cross the finish line. So when Ray White enters the dock, results are done and printed seeing prizegiving commencing much earlier. Our aim is to have prizegiving done by 8.45 on a Tuesday night.

The Mt Gay Offshore Series has started with a perfect conditions Brothers Island Race ably organised and won by Chris Williams. Six boats raced and the Mana race is not far away.

The NOR is out for our annual Giesen New Year Regatta and we will be welcoming in the Round The North Island (RNI) shorthanded fleet in late February. Clive Ballet is looking after both these events on behalf of the sailing committee. Not only that but he organises all of our sailing instructions as well.

Both Clive and Mandy pretty much ensure your sailing season is a successful one. Thank you both very much.

As you can see there is lots happening in the sailing fraternity so get out there and enjoy it!

MOORINGS Latest report from the combined clubs mooring sub-committee 1) Potential new mooring atTwo Island Point in Current Basin - just south of French Pass has been applied to council for.

2) We have signed agreements to purchase a mooring in Torea Bay. These are currently with the owner, and once signed we will apply to council for the transfer. It will be a 15m single boat mooring, reasonably close to the jetty. Then can walk over to Portage.

3) Stafford Bay Mooring 799 has gone. A slip has wiped out the mooring.

4) Missionary Bay (Onapua Bay, Tory Channel) - a large tree has slipped into the water, and is encroaching on the swing circle. We are looking at either trying to remove the tree or relocate the mooring.

5) Queen Charlotte Moorings - Bakers Bay, Schoolhouse Bay and Pickersgill Island moorings are missing and will be repaired by Christmas.

6) We are waiting on the installation of a new mooring in Te Kopi Bay in Port LIgar. All consented, will let you know when good to use.

7) We hope to have an amendment sheet for the mooring map published before Christmas.

Yachting New Zealand Corner with Ian Gardiner When Sue asked me if I could contribute to the club’s monthly Latitude 41 Magazine, after seeing the work and superb results she achieved, it was an easy decision to provide some assistance.

In this first ‘Yachting New Zealand Corner’, I though perhaps a little bit about myself, the program and South Island Clubs.

I am a born Marlboroughian, and have always had a passion for the water, spending many weekends and holidays of my childhood in the Port Underwood area mucking around in boats. In my youth I was not a competitive sailor, but sailed with the Springlands Sea Scouts. It is great to see several of our current members I introduced to sailing through Sea Scouts!

My passion in my youth was rowing and achieved class championship honours’. I need to thank my son Nick, for his infectious passion for the water and sailing demonstrated while he was learning to sail and race. This has been the catalyst for my career direction changing to what I am doing now. More recently, somehow, he convinced me to sail the 2023 Round the North Island Race with him, father & son bonding time? or perhaps Dad’s cheque book?

Like a lot of our era, we did an “OE” and ours took us to the Solomon Islands, where I was the manager for a Malaysian equipment company Solomon Island branch. We spent close to 10 years in the Islands managing over 100 staff and a 24/7 operation. It was during this period I found my recharge time was when I was either on, or in the sea. I was active in the Point Cruz Yacht Club, but my passion became wreck diving in Iron Bottom Sounds. Iron Bottom Sounds has a lot of history and was the turning point during WWII with great sea battles and many Naval Ship losses in the area.

My favourite memory was with Brian Bailey, and being the first to dive the US destroyer Aaron Ward, sunk in 1943. Then after meeting Bob Ballard (who eventually discovered the Titanic) who had unsuccessfully searched for the wreck, we were doing our own research and discovered the wreck with a recreational Hummingbird Sounder!

We returned to New Zealand before the political unrest took hold and the NZ/Australian peace force moved in. On our return I did several things in NZ including selling earthmoving equipment and running my own business before accepting the challenge of Regional Support Officer (RSO) for Yachting New Zealand looking after clubs from Christchurch north.

Five years ago the programme was restructured and I took on the full South Island. The role has recently been re-titled to Regional Development Manager (RDM).

The South Island has some 32 affiliated clubs from Pohara in the North to Bluff in the South.

Some interesting facts: There are 108 affiliated Clubs in New Zealand 30% in the South Island.

The South Island Club Members make up 20% of the total New Zealand Affiliated Club Members.

Only 4 clubs in the South Island have paid managers / administrators.

There are 6 South Island Clubs that have a Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS) exemption in place Waikawa Boating Club is the biggest club in the South Island followed by Naval Point Club Lyttelton, Tasman Bay Cruising Club, Nelson Yacht Club and Otago Yacht Club.

The role of an RDM is a varied and interesting one, meeting many different people with a great variety of passions and ambitions, but geography challenged. My role is to support our South Island clubs to achieve their strategic goals and offer advice and support where required.

As most members of the South Island clubs have day jobs this role involves lots of weekends and after hours’ time to meet the members’ needs. I am constantly impressed and proud of what our clubs achieve with volunteers and the time they give to their club.

I have recently completed Yachting New Zealand’s biannual Club Survey that was this year conducted face-to-face with every club in the South Island. No mean feat considering the geography of our clubs. I thought I would share with you some of the areas that Clubs are focusing on and where YNZ will be working to support clubs in these areas: • Growing membership.

• Strategic plans.

• Women in sailing strategies.

• Assistance with lease and resource consents.

• Funding.

• Maintaining and enhancing access to the water for all boaties.

Mandatory lifelines on boats and lifejackets worn by all on board

Boom strike , head injury

Loud warning hails from skipper to crew when tacking / gybing.

Excess Alcohol ingestion

Limit rum and beer rations and isolate wine drinkers to forward cabins

Slip / Trip / Fall on deck or cockpit

Wear flat soled slip proof shoes / boots no high heeled shoes, keep cordage neat and tidy at all times

Sunburn

Apply sunscreen and wear hats

Man overboard

Stay inside lifelines and do not “P” off back of moving yacht

Ropeburn / Cuts to hands

Wear sailing gloves

Collision with object (any)

Ensure boat is seaworthy and good lookout is maintained at all times

Exposure to adverse weather

Monitor weather forecast Look out for white water

Fingers jammed in winches or pulleys

Get crew to operate winches

Arguments and stressful situations

Skipper is always in charge and should make decisions solely based on skill and experience of crew

Rule interpretation errors

Sail largest / heaviest yacht in fleet and yell / bluff the loudest

Running aground, insurance hazard

Keep land-based activities to minimum when racing, observe warnings from crew.

Comment Self inflating models do actually work quite well inside cabins or when being demonstrated to new crew. Don't trip over the lifelines Inadvertent gybes are normally preceded by loud screams from skipper /crew and followed by substantial gear damage Low or poor quality alcohol rations on board is generally indicative of poor racing performance Works well within marina but outside marina entrance special care is required to prevent ropes getting into props.

Do not tie WTFTT(who the F tied this) or butchers knife (needed to undo them) type knots.

Ensure cream is not silicone / grease etc which is normally found in similar tubes but does not prevent sunburn. Hats can fly off in wind leading to man overboard situations, see below.

If diving for lost hats, as above, ensure dive is graceful and appears to be an intentional act to prevent getting a hard time back in clubhouse post race Brand is important to many and colours should generally match tee shirts and boat colours

Big genoas and wayward spinnakers can often limit manoeuvrability in strong winds. Don’t sail into a marina full of williwaws Stay in the clubhouse bar if in any doubt exists. Know how to reef all sails quickly and panic only when skipper jumps overboard Skipper requires 10 fingers to open beers and operate computer based equipment on board.

Also handy to have full complement of digits to point out other peoples mistakes.

First mate (wife), if on board, generally has the final say. Fatal mistake to have first mate and an ex wife or girlfriend on board at same time.

Lighthouses, ferries and commercial ships always have the final say. Orderly meetings and protests generally resolve matters after the third / fourth beer or rum Depthsounders can lie when covered in weed or barnacles, visual clues are availableDon’t follow centreboarders into shallow bays with keelers. Be insured!

I wanted to share a few pointers with you after talking with Stuart Scaife from Boating Marlborough last week. These are often the overlooked little things with potential for major unplanned expense!

H

$2 o ring can save BIG expense.

So often water in fuel creates countless issues and expense. It often takes only a few minutes to look over the fuel tank installation to find possible water entry points.

Here a simple O ring is missing from the filler cap. Clogged filters, poor engine performance, rusty tanks is what we know of. Time will tell if other damage will surface.

Message is simple. No water in fuel means no rust, no bug, no clogged filters, longer engine life and sometimes that only costs $2, now that's worth it!

Tips & Tricks

“There’s a bloody good device out there called the Marriage Saver you should get one”… I was once told….

Little more than a boat hook with a fancy hook thingy on the end, I took this advice and yes - I am still married!

It’s clever yet simple design is ideal for picking up ropes, fending off and picking up buoys.

To use you thread a mooring rope through a mooring ring with a simple pull or push.

Always ready to use, you can use your own mooring line - no messenger or guide line needed. It also works as a regular boat hook when the hook head is locked open.

How it works The hook design threads your line through those hard-to-reach mooring buoys, post rings, marina ropes and eyes. It allows the use of the boat's own mooring line for direct one step tie-ups without using a messenger or guide-line.

The action pulls the mooring rope through the ring and back onto the boat in one motion without having to reach dangerously far overboard. Just place the eye of the dock line in the carabiner style hook, reach down and pull the hook right through the cleat or mooring eye and bring the dock line back towards the boat to secure the line's eye on the cleat.

Step by step 1. Release carabiner 2. Place Eye of dockline in the carabiner. The quick release carabiner quick gate opens out. The function is to prevent the carabiner from accidentally hooking on to a mooring ring 3. Either push or pull according to mooring situation. Carabiner must always point in opposite direction from hook mooring movement. Use the mooring line to control this 4. When operation is completed pull out the dock line from the carabiner and secure the line's eye on the boats own cleat.

Get ready for diving - Here’s the smart divers approach.

With the peak dive time approaching and we see divers getting more active, we encourage those with great foresight and wanting reliable and safe gear, to get their dive kit up to speed sooner rather than later.

Dive cylinders with the "mauve" coloured tag will run out of test before next year. If you have had your cylinder tested with us it will have a sticker also advising when the next test is due.

This year staff will not be working late into the night to test \cylinders over the peak period. So don't be caught short of an air supply this summer.

Your regs should be serviced at factory intervals, or when the filter on the inlet side is green or after lay up. Don't delay in getting this done. Staff have done the "tech service schools" over winter and are up to speed with the latest servicing checks. For those of you who deem your regs are "ok" we can do a health check of pressures and function for $25 (no parts, no dismantling).

Spearos need to check their kit also. The gun rubbers don't last much more than a season, bungees and string need frequent replacement to. Check shaft for straightness, sharpen tips and check the floppers, etc.

Island Cruising NZ, formerly known as the Island Cruising Association, provide resources for cruisers wanting to prepare for long coastal or offshore voyages. We also run yacht cruising rallies around New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific; namely Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Our rallies are designed to allow sailors to cruise the islands aboard their own boats, or assist as crew on someone else's boat. Although our rallies have typically attracted owners of sailing yachts, we welcome owners of offshore capable motor boats to join us too.

We provide education for sailors to prepare their vessels for sailing offshore, suitable for both new and experienced ocean sailors, through our online cruising preparation workshops and members resources. We can provide assistance with Customs, Immigration, Health and Biosecurity in and out of each country and we hold social events at various points along the way.

The Link Pathway project began in 2005 with a desire by Inner Marlborough Sounds residents to see pathways established between local communities. As initial pathways were created, the vision grew to build a continuous highstandard pathway on public land between Havelock and Picton, including Anakiwa.

This will effectively extend the existing popular Queen Charlotte Track, and link it directly to Picton and the inter-island ferries, and thus the Link Pathway project took on regional and national significance.

As survey work gathered momentum, four sections of abandoned historic bridle path were re-discovered having been constructed over 150 years ago, and lain forgotten for 100 years. Comprising 20% of the total Link Pathway, these add a significant heritage status to the project.

By 2021, 40 ks of track were constructed. The downpour in July 2021 created a hugh amount of rebuilding and again this year in August parts of the track received substantial amounts of damage The team of volunteers have worked hard to have the pathway OPEN throughout and looking mighty fine!

All storm-damaged sections have now been repaired though some short sections are narrow and require care. Improvements are ongoing.

A couple of short sections in the Lower Mahakipawa are still to be constructed, but the adjacent road edge can be used in the meantime.

Big ups to our hard-working team who have reopened all the pathway in time for Labour Weekend.

Island Cruising NZ shared this post on their facebook page a couple of days ago - this is a very timely reminder - please read, it is easy to imagine yourself in this horrible situation.

Very telling safety story from the Boston Station of the CCA: This is a true story relayed to me by a friend in Pulpit Harbor, ME. The author is an experienced sailor and mountaineer and had just returned from a successful trip to the summit of Mt. Everest. “ I hopped into our motor dinghy and headed out to the boat to do some routine chores. Once completed, I got back in the dinghy and headed back to the dock.

It was low tide. I needed to navigate shallow water to get to my usual tie up spot. I did what I frequently do in this situation, turning around to lift the idling motor into the shallow water setting. The new motor we bought this year doesn’t raise and lower quite as easily as our old one did, so I had to jiggle the motor to get it to lock into position. As I did this, the motor tiller brushed the side of the dinghy and jerked into full throttle. The dinghy surged forward, then swerved violently to starboard. I was thrown from the dinghy into the shallow water.

Outboard motors are sold with “kill switches”. These are rubber lanyards intended to be worn around the operator’s wrist, with the other end connected to a switch on the motor. If the operator is inadvertently thrown into the water, the lanyard pulls the switch and immediately shuts off the motor.

These kill switches are designed to avoid one of the most dangerous situations in motor boating.

If an operator is thrown overboard with the motor running, the motor jerks immediately to one side and causes the boat to start spiraling in circles. It is almost impossible for a person in the water to get out of the path of an oncoming motor boat, and the rapidly rotating propeller can easily shred human bodies. This situation is widely known as “the circle of death”. However, few boat operators bother to actually use kill switch lanyards. The lanyards are mildly cumbersome and the risk of accident is low. Unfortunately, I was not wearing a lanyard.

I now faced the circle of death. I stood up in waist deep water, turned, and saw the dinghy coming straight at me, full throttle. In the seconds available, I had two clear thoughts: “this may be it”, and “I must get as low as I can”. The water was shallow and the dinghy was almost on top of me. I submerged as much as possible, my back on the ocean floor. The dinghy passed over me, motor screaming, circling hard to the right as it did.

I resurfaced, trying to assess how badly I was hurt, and realized I had to get out of the way of the dinghy’s next pass. I grabbed onto another boat tied to the dock and held it to me as a shield. Eventually the circling dinghy ran itself onto the rocky beach. My legs were bleeding profusely in multiple places.

It feels a miracle that I escaped serious injury or death. The propellor blades passed over my right thigh, making five parallel cuts. But the propellor was just high enough, and I was just deep enough, that the cuts are shallow. One blade cut more deeply on my left knee, but the cut was clean. As the doctor who stitched me up said, “you are incredibly lucky you aren’t in surgery right now, with us trying to save severed muscles or limbs, or worse”. If the dinghy hadn’t turned exactly when it did, the blades would have hit me in the face.

My cuts will heal in a couple of weeks. For now, the bigger problem is contusions in my legs, caused by the propellor shaft and metal boat bottom slamming into them.

Walking is a real challenge. This too should heal soon. I am beyond fortunate.

This really spooked me. It was an incredibly close call. Nothing I have encountered in the mountains compares.

I pride myself in carefully managing risk, in the mountains and on the water. I have spent a lifetime doing so. But I lapsed, and almost paid a severe price. It is a fine line we all tread, often not realizing it.

Friends, wear those lanyards, or seatbelts, or whatever. And let us be grateful for every moment we get to inhabit this good earth.”

Cape Terawhiti and Cape Koamaru Find out why uncertainty about the spelling and meanings of Cape Terawhiti and Cape Koamaru persist today.

On either side of the Cook Strait are two headlands with apparently Māori names, but it is possible that neither is correct. Both were recorded by Cook, but neither have the spelling that he applied.

On the 31 January 1770, Cook spoke to Topaa (Topea), an older Māori man, on Motuara Island in Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui. Cook questioned Topaa about local geography. Topaa described the lands to the north and south. Cook noted in his diary, that Topaa pointed across the strait to ‘Teirawhitte’ and duly labelled the southwest headland of the North Island ‘Cape Teirawhitte’.

A few days later, Cook noted in his journal they passed another headland,‘call'd by the Natives Koamaroo’.

Both of these names were then subject to a variety of misspellings, but continued to be used on maps and in navigational aids.

When the Honorary Geographic Board of New Zealand was established in 1924, it tried to standardise the spelling of place names. It decided the eastern cape would be Cape Terawhiti, as that name was in common usage. The Board noted, however, that the correct spelling was Tarawhiti (under the influence of Elsdon Best), while others argued it should be ‘Te Rawhiti’ or ‘Te Ra Whiti’. The western cape would be Cape Koamaru, rather than Koamoru as it was often spelt in the newspapers.

Why is it so hard to ascertain the spelling or meaning of these two place names? In addition to the challenges of researching Māori place names (i.e. traditions being passed down orally, the loss of knowledge due to colonisation and other factors), this area of New Zealand has had a reasonably fluid population, with many conquests and migrations occurring. Names may have been picked up by later arrivals or, these names may not be the Māori names for these features. Some have pointed out that Terawhiti may simply mean ‘the east’ and was not attached to that particular headland. One scholar argues that Koamaru is a ‘hybrid placename’ and the original name is Operuahua.

DID YOU KNOW: Motu Ngārara / Allports Island is an island in Tōtaranui / Queen Charlotte Sound opposide Waikawa Bay, named after Thomas Allport who leased and farmed the island in the late 19th Century. Subsequent to the death of Allport, the Department of Agriculture used the island to breed Angora goats until the island became a scenic reserve in 1927. The island is covered in regenerating native bush. The Māori name means lizard island.

Penguins use the island as a breeding ground, and robins and kiwi are found on the island.

Predator control has been undertaken by DOC to reduce rats, mice and possums, however there have been problems with hunters illegally releasing pigs on the island. No moorings are available.
