Tip of the month - avoiding chartplotter assisted grounding…

When anchoring or using a mooring, take a compass heading of your ‘escape route’ should you need to make an unplanned departure Your chart plotter will show the direction the boat is travelling, not the direction the bow is pointing.

This can lead you to drive towards the shore, rather than out to safety.

The weather will almost always be horrible if you need to move urgently during the night, with no visibility, driving rain and screaming wind.

Having a planned compass direction to head out safely gives you peace of mind and will help to lessen an already stressful situation.

Waikawa Boat Club members Amy Richards and Luke Hodgson took their 38ft Bruce Roberts ‘Crusoe’ around the South Island as part of the Island Cruising South Island Rally 2023.

Circumnavigation Part 2 Marlborough to Fiordland After Charles Sound we finally made it to the Doubtful Sound and had an enjoyable 10 days exploring. We spent time exploring Neck Cove and Deas Cove in Thompson Sound with its abundant marine life, and the weather had settled enough to explore the outer area. This was one of our favourite places.

We paid Deep Cove a visit for reprovisioning and revitalisation. Deep Cove is tucked away in the bowels of Doubtful Sound at the bottom of the Manapouri Power Station, and typical of many South Island settlements, its a place where a spade is a spade. Despite being inland it was incredibly windy. The cruising boat mooring is located on the far side of the sound which means every day, we had to make the treacherous roller coaster dinghy ride over the powerstation tail race to get to shore.

Deep Cove is overseen by Billy the hostel manager. Billy is a very friendly helpful bloke who likes a good laugh, meeting great folks, and enjoys long chats over many a coffee. Deep Cove is also accessible by land transport so we were able to stock up on fresh food and had a portable depth sounder sent in so we could retire the lead line. The facilities at Deep Cove include overpriced internet, washing machines, toilets, hot showers, and a resident pet Kea called Mr A, last name Hole. Best of all there is a fuel dock and you can get reasonably priced diesel and petrol. It’s a very good idea to stock up on fuel here as the next fuel stop is Oban, and you don’t want to run out getting around West Cape, Puysegur Point, and Foveaux Strait.

After departing Deep Cove we visited Gaer Arm, Precipice Cove, Blanket Bay, and First Arm.

Blanket Bay was the highlight. We pulled up to a mooring buoy tucked into a little cove that was marked the ‘Shangri-La’. We had two beautiful nights there and made use of the facilities of the Blanket Bay Hotel. Don’t be fooled, it’s not a real hotel. It’s a fisherman outpost with unlimited fresh water, an incinerator, and if you have the password its got a Starlink satellite dish on the roof! The local cray fisherman threw us a few crays and we kept busy fishing and watching the daily helicopters coming in to pick up the days crayfish catch.

After Doubtful Sound, we continued south to Dusky Sound, and once inside Breaksea Sound we tied up to a mooring buoy in Beach Harbour to sit out the next incoming weather system. The Beach Harbour anchorage is known for its bird life and we had Keas visiting the boat daily, and mobs of screeching Kaka in the trees all around us. It was really lovely, until it wasn’t! This is where we experienced the-infamous Fiordland thunderstorm. If anyone remembers that club beach BBQ night at Ngaruru Bay a few years ago… it was like that, but way worse.

It always starts with the same sentence ‘hmm the wind has just changed, that’s strange!’

Fast forward about an hour later and the thunderstorm conditions, coupled with the localised catabatic effect of the mountains, meant the wind blowing down the valley and into our anchorage was nothing a short of cyclonic. We’ve both never seen wind pick up so quick and fierce before. We were straining on the mooring lines and Crusoe was heeling right over. Other yachts were dragging, masts ended up in trees, anchors got jammed, anemometer and wind turbines destroyed. And then in half an hour it was all over like nothing had happened. Not something you want to experience on a regular basis.

While in Dusky Sound we visited Anchor Island and that was another one of the highlights of Fiordland. Anchor Island is a predator free island and one of only two islands home to the critically endangered Kakapo, and surprisingly, is open for the public to visit and no permit is required. We secured Crusoe in Inner Luncheon Cove and spent a beautiful day walking on the island. The closest we came to seeing Kakapo, was seeing fresh Kakapo poo. But despite that it was a privilege to be able to visit this island and see first-hand how well the NZ fauna and flora can flourish when introduced pests are removed.

By now we were into the later parts of January, with many miles of travel ahead of us. There was a sustainable storm brewing in the Southern Ocean and going to close the weather window south for some time. So, we made the decision to push on and head south to Preservation Inlet. We found the currents around West Cape much stronger than expected and even though we passed the cape over 5nm out we had large breaking waves appear from seemingly nowhere and at one point Crusoe’s stern was thrown into the air and propellor cavitated severely.

We spent only one night in Preservation Inlet and decided to run for Stewart Island to shelter from the incoming storm there. We were also starting to get tired and neither one of us wanted another encounter with a Fiordland thunderstorm! So after one month in Fiordland we set off heading due East, waving Puysegur Point, Fiordland, and the sandflies goodbye.

Hot tips for going to Fiordland - by boat…

• Getting there is the easy part!

• Having crew will help you make the most of the area as then you can leave the boat to explore and not have to worry about it.

• You must have good ground tackle and at least 100m of chain. While some of the boats on the rally went the whole trip without using a stern line, we used our stern line most nights. We carried 2 x 100m lengths of line.

• Bring a kayak.

• Get fuel wherever you can. You will need it.

• If we did it again, we would spend less time in the northern sounds and allocate more time to the southern sounds. If you want to see as much as possible within a limited time frame, then you need to be on the go moving anchorage every day.

Winter fishing prospects With winter starting to settle in for the next few months, it’s time to think about winter fishing prospects. We’re lucky enough to have plenty of winter fishing options at our disposal, meaning there’s no excuse to spend the winter on the couch.

Inshore fishing: With the cooling water, fishing typically slows inshore. There is still good fishing out there though.

Targeting reefs and points is still a good bet for species such as blue cod, perch, and terakihi. Don’t overlook subtle changes on the bottom as you can often find fish sitting on smaller, less obvious structures and spread out over rocky areas.

Fishing sandy and muddy bottoms is still worthwhile, with plenty of gurnard and the odd snapper lurking around. Anchoring up and pumping out a big burley trail helps to maximise your chances of success. Then fishing artificial baits such as casting and retrieving softbaits is effective. Or have a gofishing crustacean or shellfish baits. This will help to avoid the spiky dogs that tend to move in over winter.

Offshore fishing: Winter brings with it plenty of opportunities for fishing out wide. More settled weather brings good chances to get out make the most of the great fishing available.

The Blue Cod - a staple of sounds species Places like D’urville start to fire this time of year with plenty of big kingfish and snapper to be caught. Fishing slow jigs, such as sliders also known as kaburas is the most effective way to target deep water snapper. Fishing depths of 60-130m+ with sliders ranging from 130g-240g allow you to get deep and stay deep. For kingfish,mechanical jigging is the go-to now. Look for good sign on your sounder and fish jigs at their depth. Winter also brings opportunities for topwater fishing for true monster kingfish in places like Stephen’s passage.

Deepwater fishing also tends to pick up this time of year, with groper/hapuka starting to move into shallower water over the next few months. Fishing big pieces of squid or barracuta is a popular way to go with weights matched to the depth you’re fishing as well as the current. For those who don’t mind a wee drive, Kaikoura offers good winter fishing for Bluenose and other deepwater species.

With lots of winter fish available to us, there’s plenty of reasons to get out there. So don’t hang up the rods and store the boat for winter – there’s still fish to be found .

What a privilege boarding Steinlager 2 recently in the Auckland Viaduct for a Corporate Event – an experience to truly behold! Nicknamed ‘Big Red’ she easily engenders the glory days that inspired this tiny nation and the yachting world alike in the 1989/90 Whitbread round the world race.

Of all of Sir Peter Blake’s illustrious achievements this event was a pinnacle. After five Whitbread attempts; Steinlager 2, Blake and her crew won all six legs of the race on line and handicap. Game, Set and Match – an unprecedented and unsurpassed feat in Whitbread and Volvo history.

What made the 89/90 Whitbread race so spectacular were the two huge Kiwi Ketch’s F&P and Steinlager 2, skippered by Grant Dalton and Sir Peter Blake respectively.

They made a massive presence on the world stage and pretty much stole the show; duelling each other consistently ahead of the rest of the fleet around the globe.

The standout leg was Fremantle to Auckland. Both boats staying in touch with each other for the entire 3272 miles with just 6 minutes separating them on the Orakei finish line. It was epic! With a prevailing south-westerly both boats were constantly searching for waves to surf into the lead right across the Australian Bight and into the Tasman. Upon rounding the top of the North Island both crews couldn’t believe what they were seeing up on top of Cape Reinga – packed with Kiwi spectators who had travelled north to witness the spectacle – the nation was hooked!

Blake won his hometown leg with piece of yachting mastery. All but neck and neck off Flat Rock north east of Auckland and just 25 miles to the finish, from the helm he instructed Mike Quilter to go below and tune into the local radio station Newstalk 1ZB for any hint of weather conditions.

Upon which a listener from Titirangi on top of the Waitakere ranges had rung in to say an opposing southerly front was passing through. Blake instinctively and immediately ordered a sail change ahead of time, baffling F&P, who minutes later got slammed with their downwind sails still aloft. The race was won right at that moment!

This was international yachting history that will never be repeated. Individually sponsored campaigns have now morphed into entire corporate races. Never again will we hear the likes of Peter Montgomery’s live Whitbread commentary on Satellite Phone direct into the Steinlager’s Nav station for those enthralling daily reports, with his signature line “Hello Peter, how are you, where are you?!”. It was raw and it was exciting. Everyone well beyond the yachting community was riveted! The radio would crackle and fade, but you just knew you were right there on the water with Steinlager 2 and all her crew.

In contrast and with respect, now the commentary is delivered through well considered press releases worlds away from the action.

After the race finished Steinlager 2 lead a more sombre life for two decades with three different owners, taking part in various regattas and some Whitbread reunion races.

However in 2012 The New Zealand Sailing Trust had a wonderful opportunity to purchase Steinlager 2 and return her to New Zealand for a new role; to provide youth development sailing journeys for young New Zealanders and for corporate and business events, alongside her predecessor Lion New Zealand.

After an extensive refit entrusted to Yachting Developments at Hobsonville to return her former glory and accommodate twice the crew numbers for her new role, most of the original racing features have being carefully and passionately retained.

When you board Steinlager 2 and walk timidly around her expansive flat deck you can easily sense what has gone before. The Barient prime winches and manual ‘coffee grinders’ immediately remind you of the intense and constant physical work the crew endured in both the freezing southern ocean and the stifling topics. Forward and close by is one of just two hatches leading below deck designed to minimise possible water ingress from the mountainous waves that would frequently crash over the deck.

On board this day was a crew of thirty five business executives all taking turns in grinding to set the sails or being directed to release a sheet through a tack or simply to move to the high side rail for safe passage, a very engaging experience for everyone.

Usually the day’s crew would be running a high powered corporate office, but this event had everyone in awe and completely engaged for the two hour trip. Testament to that may have been the delicious cuisine they brought on board was hardly touched to the delight of the crew after clean up. Marlborough-Nelson Marine Radio Association provides a monitored marine . communication system in the wider Marlborough Sounds, Cook Strait, Tasman and Golden Bay. On a recent Friday, late afternoon, but fortunately still daylight, a member of Marlborough-Nelson Marine Radio departed Waikawa Bay for the short voyage across to Kumutoto Bay. Our Operator Rod received a call from this mariner when he was in the vicinity of Allports Island. He had come across a partly flooded runabout approximately 4 metres long, adrift with no one onboard. He had checked this out prior to calling Marlborough-Nelson Marine Radio, so a good concise report was made. He was of the opinion that fortunately it was a drifter, not the result of a mishap. There was no evidence of any passengers having been onboard recently and having fallen overboard.

As we all would hope, the gentleman making passage from Waikawa to Kumutoto was a decent sort of chap, and in the spirit of good seamanship, offered to tow the adrift vessel into Picton

.

Duty Operator Rod made a couple of phone calls, firstly to Picton Marina, and then to Marlborough-Nelson Marine Radio’s President Dave Baker to arrange for somewhere for the towed vessel to be delivered to and secured.

Police Search and Rescue were notified in case they already had, or subsequently received notification of missing persons, or a missing vessel.

The vessel was successfully delivered into the Picton Town wharf where a thorough inspection was carried out.

Our good samaritan then continued on his way to Kumutoto.

Fortunately, a good outcome, which is what we all hope for. It was a pleasure for our Marlborough-Nelson Marine Radio personnel to be involved in, and our thanks goes to the mariner who went out of their way to assist.

Channel information Channel 01 - Mt Stokes Coverage extends from Cape Farewell in the south to Cape Egmont in the north and the east coast from Cape Palliser to Cape Campbell, most of the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay, Tasman Bay, Wellington and Cook Strait. At times this channel may be workable outside these perimeters.

Channel 04 - Drumduan Covers Tasman Bay including some of the western side of D'Urville Island. This channel was previously channel 28 but on 15 July 2018 it changed to channel 04. Channel 04 is permanently linked to channels 60 and 65 - this means that any transmission made on channel 04 is heard simultaneously on channel 65 and 60, and vice versa.

Channel 05 - Single Hill Sinle Hill is southeast from Ward and the channel covers the east coast from Cape Campbell south to Clarence and sometimes further south. Channel 05 is permanently linked to channel 63 - this means that any transmission made on channel 05 is heard simultaneously on channel 63, and vice versa. MNMRA also has an AIS receiver on site which feeds data into the Marine Traffic website.

Channel 60 - Mt Burnett Covers Golden Bay including the western side of D'Urville Island and down the west coast as far as Kahurangi Point.. Channel 60 is permanently linked to channels 04 and 65 - this means that any transmission made on channel 60 is heard simultaneously on channel 65 and 04, and vice versa.

Channel 63 - Mt Kahikatea Covers Queen Charlotte Sound, Port Underwood, Cook Strait, south to Cape Campbell, Kapiti, Mana and also parts of Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds.

Channel 65 - Paradise Reserve Covers Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds, Havelock, D'Urville, western Cook Strait, parts of Tasman Bay, Golden Bay and large sections of Queen Charlotte Sound. Channel 65 is permanently linked to channels 04 and 60.

Channel 66 - Mt Stokes Coverage area is similar to Channel 01. This repeater is for commercial use only and is not operator monitored

Yachting New Zealand Corner with Ian Gardiner Last weekend, Yachting New Zealand held the Club Conference, attended by 70 club Commodores and Managers. Ann Marett and Natasha Mason represented WBC. Topics covered were: • The role of data in understanding member needs (by Raynor Haagh, Yachting New Zealand) • On-water safety (by Jason Lunjevich and Sean Patterson, Maritime New Zealand) • Gaming and grant funding (by Samantha Alexander, The Lion Foundation) • Changes to the Incorporated Societies Act (by Nik Burfootand Dave Smith, Yachting New Zealand) • An Introduction to Clean Clubs (by Natalia Groom, Yachting New Zealand) • Online club tools (by Kirsten Moratz and Colin Rickett, Yachting New Zealand) • Advocacy – The future of boating (by Jeremy Brabant, environmental law specialist) • What is RŪNĀ? The YNZ website is information dense and sometimes it is challenging to find information easily. One of the biggest sections is the Club Manual section - with a large repository of information and downloads available.

One of the other big take outs from the conference was the RŪNĀ Program The RŪNĀ programme replaces Sailing…Have A Go!, and introduces three modules of learning for students in the classroom plus the opportunity to grow their knowledge through a sailing experience at their local yacht club.

This is just the start of a really exciting time and it’s great to see so many clubs stepping up to facilitate RŪNĀ. It’s a great way for clubs to interact with their communities and we’ve already seen how members enjoy sharing their passion with the younger generation.

Opening clubs up for potential new members is another benefit from hosting RŪNĀ, as newcomers have a chance to experience the facilities and explore sailing as a sport for their family.

The programme is proving popular among education providers too, and as Robyn McConnell of Royal Oak Primary School said, RŪNĀ “ticks a lot of boxes”.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to take what you’re doing in the classroom and cement their learning out on the water. You can bring science, social science, as well as EOTC (Education outside the Classroom) into it” McConnell explains.

The most recently launched module Kōrinorino – Our Ancestors' Wake, has a focus on social sciences and Aoteaora New Zealand Histories, as well as science, technology, and maths associated with navigating.

The third module Moanamana is set to be launched later in 2023.
