MEET YOUR EXECUTIVE Rear Commodore Moorings Steve Dawson Sue and I moved to Waikawa about 5 years ago. We are retired, but not idle. Both Sue and I are very active in the Waikawa Boat Club as we believe you get more out of organisations the more you put into them. I have been on the exec committee for a number of years, and then a short period as commodore. Sue is very active in the house committee, most often behind the scenes with an apron on in the kitchen.

Over the time we have been married (40+ years) we have owned 3 yachts, a fizz boat and then Maritza which we have owned for over 12 years. She is a 60+ year old 10.5m carvel planked kauri launch that we have done nearly 2000 hours since buying her. She is regularly at club cruising events and occasionally as a start or finish boat for the yacht racing. She was built by Swansons in Blackwood Bay. A real Sounds boat. We have taken her to D’Urville and to Abel Tasman.

While living in Christchurch, we boated out of Havelock for 6 years before moving the boat over to Waikawa. We know both Pelorus and Queen Charlotte quite well. Over the 6 years from Christchurch, we averaged going boating up here once a month - over 72 round trips - until the Kaikoura Earthquake. We moved shortly after.

My career was in research and development of electronic products for manufacturing. Latterly specialising in solar electronics. Sue was an Occupational Therapist.

Now that we are retired, along with the boat club duties, I am a volunteer for Coastguard, and founded and manage a project to eradicate stoats from Arapaoa Island so we can introduce kiwi there in a few years - this was detailed in an earlier issue of this magazine and recently in the Marlborough Express.

Is the SSANZ Evolution Sails Round North Island (RNI) race starts in Auckland on the 25 February.

This race is a two handed (2 crew per boat) race so no doubt the crew will be a little jaded by the time they arrive in Queen Charlotte!

Even better we have 5 WBC boats in the fleet: Global, High Voltage, Distraction, Simply Irrestible and we’ll claim it as one of ours - Drinks Trolley!

We are delighted the Waikawa Boating Club was selected to host the fleet during their 2nd stopover after sailing down the West Coast of the North Island from their 1st stopover at Mangonui. We are expecting the first boats of the 38 strong fleet to start arriving on Thursday 2nd March. The majority will be with us for several days before the Race restarts for the 3rd leg to Napier. The club will be open for the duration of their stay. The fleet will be berthed in the new Waikawa marina on one jetty.

They will all have AIS if you are interested in tracking them on their journey.

Our Unsung Heros

Introducing Wendy Sullivan So now we get to the most important people in the club – the one’s who keep the liquid gold flowing. I have worked as duty manager (no, I’m not a bar “maid”!) at Waikawa Boating Club for over four years.

Outside of pouring your Friday night drinks, I’m an environmental advisor. I work for NZ Landcare Trust, a non-profit organisation supporting farmers and growers in their environmental projects, and I do a bit of freelancing on the side.

I previously worked for DOC for 20 years at various places around the country, and I have a Master of Science in Ecology. I have been privileged to work in some incredible places including many of our human-free offshore islands.

I sail under the sound captainship of Clive Ballet on Coup d’tat. I wouldn’t have believed, first starting out on Learn to Sail over seven years ago, that I’d be sailing through the night to Tarakohe, or across Cook Strait, or being 2IC in a two-handed series! I’m actually still quite useless though, but hide that fact quite well by bossing the boys about, and have mastered looking busy when it’s time to winch. Our recycling programme is certainly the best in the fleet. But in all seriousness, I’m grateful to Clive and all involved for allowing me this amazing opportunity to be out on the waves every week.

My most favourite thing in life is being in the backcountry, and I try to get out tramping most weeks. Tramping is as much about enjoying the journey as the destination, although we’re constantly looking for that next hit – the best view.

Nothing beats slogging up a mountain to see...more mountains!

I’m currently the Chairperson of Kaipupu Sanctuary, you know, that little blob of bush next to the ferry terminal, cut off from the mainland by a very expensive predator-proof fence.

We’re a volunteer conservation project, and donations to help keep us running are welcome;)... Click here You may also see me wandering the streets with my two greyhounds. I look forward to seeing you on Friday nights! I’ll even pour you a drink!

MOORINGS

All the moorings available to our Full members are in joint ownership between Waikawa, Mana and Pelorus Boating Club.

The Combined Clubs Mooring Committee meet 3-4 times a year to discuss potential new moorings, any issues arising over the past few months as well as looking to the future for ways to improve our mooring assets.

While we aim to present positive information to our readership in this publication, there will be some occasions when a reminder, especially around mooring use is handy.

Unfortunately, there have been a few instances reported over the Christmas and New Year period when non-member vessels have used club moorings. This can be frustrating for everyone concerned, so please view this as a timely reminder for the new year on mooring etiquette, along with some guidance below on what to do if you encounter a problem with a vessel on a mooring.

Displaying your correct membership information is the only way we can help each other identify non-members.

What should you do if you come across non-member vessels using club moorings?

If you come across any vessel not displaying correct membership, please ask them politely to vacate the mooring, unless in distress or broken down.

What if a polite request doesn’t work If the issue cannot be resolved with a polite request, the following is the recommended course of action: · First and foremost, avoid escalation and don’t put yourself in a situation where you feel uncomfortable – if concerned follow the steps below and move on. · Take a photo of the vessel on the mooring if possible including the vessel’s name or other identifying feature, keep note of the location, date, time and mooring number. · Please email these details at your earliest opportunity to your club office for the club to follow up.

Oversize vessels on club moorings In addition to the above advice to take photos and details · Contact the local harbourmaster by phone if possible. For the Marlborough Harbourmaster ring 03 520 7400 (council number) and ask for the duty Harbourmaster. · If you are unable to contact Harbourmaster the via phone, a message can be relayed via Marlborough Nelson radio operator. · When possible email the photos and details to your club office to forward to the relevant harbour masters.

Each of the club offices have a procedure to follow when receiving a complaint.

You are the clubs eyes out on the water and without the above information there is little they can do to follow up on a complaint or concern.

Recent mooring issue On 4 January 2023 the Wellington-based vessel ‘Sweet Georgia’ was hooked up to Punt Rails at mooring #791 in Guards Bay at the top of Pelorus Sound. Sweet Georgia is 20 metres long, and weighs 60 tonnes, which is well above the maximum size our combined club moorings rating.

This complaint has been followed up by Wellington Harbourmaster and noted by Marlborough Harbourmaster. The Harbourmasters will be very supportive if club members observe this boat again on our moorings, so please let them know.

Potential impact on future mooring resource consents Following this approach is particularly important if the vessel is over-size for the mooring, which constitutes an infringement of local byelaws. This may impact on future resource consent for the mooring and potentially drag the block damaging the seabed.

Further, we all need to remember to take all our rubbish home – you wouldn’t dream of tipping it overboard?! If we are seen to be too untidy, it will not be favourable when we want to renew mooring consents. It’s in all our best interests to be tidy kiwis please.

General reminders No vessel may claim exclusive right to any mooring at any time unless those moorings are specified as being only suitable for one boat at a time.

No more than five (5) boats shall raft up to a mooring unless otherwise specified in your club information, or on the mooring itself.

The maximum combined weight of all boats rafted up on any mooring (where rafting up is allowed) is 35 tonnes unless otherwise specified in your club information, or on the mooring itself. Maximum boat length is also specified on each mooring.

Yachting New Zealand Corner with Ian Gardiner Often in my travels I am asked about the personal at Yachting New Zealand and the roles they fulfil, so I thought this month I would share some insights into the personnel of club services, and the structure of Yachting New Zealand.

Yachting New Zealand is governed by a board of eight voluntary directors.

The Current chairman of the board is Ross Blackman, originally from Dunedin, starting his career as a sailmaker and then being involved in bringing the North Sail Brand to New Zealand. Ross, also in the past, has been business manager to Team New Zealand as well as involvement in the “Big Boat” challenge. Ross, today is a passionate and active cruising sailor.

More information on the board and YNZ personnel can be found here Yachting New Zealand has six sub committees of volunteers, covering the following areas.

• Cruising, inshore, and offshore racing committee.

• Committee for sailors with disabilities.

• Race officials committee.

• Olympic and High-Performance committee.

• Governance and Remuneration committee.

• Audit and Risk committee.

Yachting New Zealand has two parts under the management of CEO David Abercrombie.

• High-Performance, primarily funded by High Performance Sport New Zealand.

• Club Services, primarily funded by grants and affiliation.

Several of the roles are shared between the two parts of Yachting New Zealand.

When you ring Yachting New Zealand, Mel Hurst will often answer the phone together with running the office, looking after boat registrations, PHRF (Performance Rating Handicap Factor) administration, CIOR (Cruising, Inshore & Offshore Racing) administration, safety certificates, supporting the Race officials committee and supporting travel and logistic arrangements.

The National Sport Development Director, Raynor Haagh, advocacy, leading the club services team as well as being 2IC, are just parts of Raynor’s busy and diverse roles.

The Club services team also includes.

• Finance manager, P.T. David Smith.

• Communication Manager, P.T. Eduan Roos. (Briefings, media, publications, and communications.)

• Safety and Technical, Angus Willison. (Safety regulations, safety inspectors, Maritime New Zealand and safety advice) • IT Support, P.T. Colin Rickets. (Data base, online learning platform, and YNZ IT development and support.)

• Runa and Clean Club, Natalia Groom, (Runa schools program, formerly the Sailing Have a Go program and the lead on the Clean Club program.)

• Coach development manager, P.T. Kristen Moratz. (Coaching development, instructor courses and developing coaching pathways.)

• NZCT regional development managers, (On the ground support) Hayden Whitburn (Auckland North) Kelly Mulchy (Auckland South) Wayne Holdt (North Island) Ian Gardiner (South Island)

Race Management - Shortening a Race.

If the race committee signals a shortened course (displays flag S with two sounds), the finishing line shall be, (a) at a rounding mark, between the mark and a staff displaying flag S; (b) a line the course requires boats to cross; or (c) at a gate, between the gate marks.

The shortened course shall be signalled with 2 sound signals before the first boat crosses the finishing line.

The race committee does not have to notify shortening the course on VHF, but in keel boat racing it is often appreciated by the fleet

7 Essential knots from SailMagazine.com Once you cut a piece of rope off the spool at the chandlery and bring it aboard your boat and give it a job to do, it becomes a line you have put to work. Whatever job it is performing—whether it becomes a jib sheet, a fender whip, or a dockline—there is an ideal knot, hitch or bend for its given task.

Types of knots fall into three general categories. The first are those tied on the end of a line and are commonly called “knots,” such as the bowline knot and the stopper knot. The second category is those used to join two lines together. They may have “bend” in their name, as in a sheet bend, because to bend, in sailor talk, means to join. The last group is those that secure a line to a cleat, piling, or stanchion, and they are known as “hitches.”

If you didn’t learn knots when you were young, you can still master them quickly.

The key is to learn what a given knot should look like when completed, then practice tying it until you can do it with your eyes closed. When studying knots, it helps to know some terms. The ends of a line are referred to as either “working” or “standing.” The working end is free, while the standing end is secured to something.

A loop formed in a line is known as a bight

Knot # 2 is the STOPPER KNOT To keep a line from pulling through a block or rope clutch, a knot should be tied in the end of it. The most secure knot for doing this is the double overhand stopper knot, known as the stopper knot for short. Unlike a simple overhand knot or a figure eight knot, this knot does not come loose easily.

The easiest way to tie a true stopper knot is by using your hand as a form. Just loop the end of the line twice around the palm of your hand, tuck the working end under the two loops, and then pull the loops off your hand. Once you try it, you’ll never use a figure eight again.

Working back to front, pass the working end twice around the palm of your open hand. After you’ve got two full wraps, pass the working end under the wraps on your palm away from your thumb. Then use the end to pull the knot tight as it slips off your hand

Mike Ponder from Henderson’s on Grove Road in Blenheim shares some great info on fishing with Sliders.

Fishing with Sliders - a brief overview Sliders, also known as kaburas are increasingly becoming a more popular way fish, and it is not hard to see why. They are super easy to use, don’t require any messy bait and are very effective. Sliders appeal to a wide range of fish species, everything from snapper, gurnard, cod and even kingfish or hapuka in the right places.

A slider has 3 basic moving parts, the lead head, a silicon skirt, and the hook assist.

The head acts as the lures weight. The size of this is determined by a few factors - namely depth, current and drift speed.

As a rough rule, for calm relatively still conditions go twice the depth in grams i.e.,80 grams in 40 meters of water and so on. If you’re drifting quickly, use a heavier weight. You want to go as light as you can in each situation. Using a lighter head allows better lure and skirt movement and overall, this makes them more attractive to the fish.

The skirt is the main fish attractor and is what makes a slider so effective. The light bits of silicone just waft gently, making the slider come alive in the water. Some brands have their skirt fixed to their assist rig and others don’t, and I will touch on the differences in rigging soon.

The assist hooks are the business end of the whole rig. While the hooks are small and light, they’re super strong and capable of landing some monster fish. Having light hooks allows the skirt to move more freely and lets the hooks sit up amongst the skirt in prime position.

Now moving on to rigging. This differs slightly with brands with some coming rigged on short traces and others are packaged in their individual components. To rig up the individual components, simply take your trace, run it through the hole in the head, through the skirt (if separate) and then tie to the metal ring attached to the assist hooks. This allows the head to swing free of the hooks and the skirt - hence the name slider. This allows the skirt to have a good action, and it lets the head slide up when you’re fighting a fish, making it less likely to throw the hooks.

Now its time to fish, this part is pretty simple. Just drop the slider over the side and allow it to sink to the bottom. There are a couple of ways to do the retrieve. The most basic being a super slow wind up a few meters off the bottom or higher if the fish are around midwater. If the fish are sitting hard on the bottom a slow lift and drop works well. The biggest trick is not to fish them too fast, they work best when fished as slow as possible.

When you feel a bite do not strike, just a slow lift or wind is all it takes to set the super sharp hooks in place. Then just take your time to fight the fish to the surface, being careful not to pull too hard and risk ripping the hook out of the fish’s lips.

Sliders are a fun alternative to bait and are a great way to mix up your fishing a bit and try something different.

Marlborough-Nelson Marine Radio Association provides a monitored marine communication system in the wider Marlborough Sounds, Cook Strait, Tasman and Golden Bay. I am writing this while lying at anchor at Burney’s Beach. A cold ginger beer is close at hand, which to be honest I would rather was an actual beer, but I try hard to be a responsible skipper.

Up to three attempts are made on the VHF channel that the TR was logged on, and if the destination is better served by another channel, then that channel will also be tried.

We could have rafted up as the launch already on the mooring is flying the appropriate flags and has fenders over the side. However, we have grandchildren on board, and as much as we love them, we don’t feel it appropriate to inflict them on another vessel.

If there is no response on the radio, then the Operator will attempt to contact the vessel owner on the phone numbers listed in the Association’s database. If still no response, then the operator will try other avenues, like contacting the applicable Marina to see if the vessel has been seen, and even a request made to check the berth or trailer parking area.

The radio is tuned to channel 63 so I can listen to the next weather forecast and, out of idle curiosity, the current trip reports.

The Operator comes on air, calling the vessel “Lady Bev”. From what I can gather it appears Lady Bev is past her stated arrival time and hasn’t closed off her trip report from Alligator to Ships Cove.

Marlborough Nelson Marine Radio’s Operating Procedures require that if a vessel is late in closing off their TR, then the Operator attempts to raise the said vessel to determine if they have forgotten to sign off, or are potentially in difficulty.

If the vessel is still not accounted for 30 minutes after their stated arrival time, the appropriate Search and Rescue Authority is notified. They will then take the steps they deem appropriate. Depending on what action is taken, costs maybe incurred by the vessel As it happens, in this instance Lady Bev replied to the second radio call from Marlborough-Nelson Radio. They had arrived late and were in the process of anchoring when the Operator first called.

Channel information Channel 01 - Mt Stokes Coverage extends from Cape Farewell in the south to Cape Egmont in the north and the east coast from Cape Palliser to Cape Campbell, most of the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay, Tasman Bay, Wellington and Cook Strait. At times this channel may be workable outside these perimeters.

Channel 04 - Drumduan Covers Tasman Bay including some of the western side of D'Urville Island. This channel was previously channel 28 but on 15 July 2018 it changed to channel 04. Channel 04 is permanently linked to channels 60 and 65 - this means that any transmission made on channel 04 is heard simultaneously on channel 65 and 60, and vice versa.

Channel 05 - Single Hill Sinle Hill is southeast from Ward and the channel covers the east coast from Cape Campbell south to Clarence and sometimes further south. Channel 05 is permanently linked to channel 63 - this means that any transmission made on channel 05 is heard simultaneously on channel 63, and vice versa. MNMRA also has an AIS receiver on site which feeds data into the Marine Traffic website.

Channel 60 - Mt Burnett Covers Golden Bay including the western side of D'Urville Island and down the west coast as far as Kahurangi Point.. Channel 60 is permanently linked to channels 04 and 65 - this means that any transmission made on channel 60 is heard simultaneously on channel 65 and 04, and vice versa.

Channel 63 - Mt Kahikatea Covers Queen Charlotte Sound, Port Underwood, Cook Strait, south to Cape Campbell, Kapiti, Mana and also parts of Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds.

Channel 65 - Paradise Reserve Covers Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds, Havelock, D'Urville, western Cook Strait, parts of Tasman Bay, Golden Bay and large sections of Queen Charlotte Sound. Channel 65 is permanently linked to channels 04 and 60.

Channel 66 - Mt Stokes Coverage area is similar to Channel 01. This repeater is for commercial use only and is not operator monitored

The Marlborough Sounds is home to a healthy population of Little Blue Penguins 😊 Korora is the smallest penguin in the world averaging around just 35cms long - Yes, just bigger than the length of a school ruler!

They nest around the sounds and have safe spaces in penguin nesting boxes which have been provided by the Department of Conservation and other local community groups.

In the past these adorable little creatures would have nested under the roots of the native podocarp trees previously covering the hillsides around the Queen Charlotte Sound. The loss of these huge trees with their giant buttress roots (as the land use gave way to farming) found the penguins displaced, and they often took to nesting under jetties and baches. They are definitely less adorable if you live above them as they seem to spend a lot of the night arguing about who caught the biggest fish! And they also have a very fishy smell about them too! 😉 The nesting boxes provided on all the predator free islands and around the coastline of the mainland here have been very important for these birds to thrive.

Penguins can easily be fatally injured by dogs, cats and stoats and these boxes provide them a safe space at vulnerable times such as nesting and moulting.

Now is the time of year when our Little Blue Penguins are moulting – they lose the majority of their feathers in an annual moult occurring January - March.

For 2-3 weeks they are unable to feed, swim and drink and become quite lethargic and sad (think COVID islolation!) If they become stressed at this time or leave their box before they have a full set of feathers they can return to the water too soon and, being so small, they can get hypothermia.

To waterproof their new set of feathers they take oil from a sebaceous gland in their tail region and, with their beak used as a paintbrush, apply it to their feathers through preening. It’s not unusual after the annual moult to see rafts of little blue penguins comparing their new finery and getting themselves into very awkward positions on the water as they waterproof their new coats.

Keep an eye out for them in the water as they spend more time than usual above it sorting out their new feathers – once of course they’ve had a massive feed over several days to replenish their empty bellies after a long fast.

You can help by keeping dogs on a leads around coastal areas – especially on morning and evening walks when the penguin may be making their way back to the water on wobbly legs after a long time resting up during their moult.

You can also help by providing nesting boxes as alternative safe spaces for penguins around the coastlines – check out what the DOC ones look like on their website if you’d like to make your own.

We are really lucky to have a thriving population here - there is plenty for them to eat in our abundant sounds, whilst in other areas of NZ over fishing has affected their population.

Battery charger ruined charging batteries.

Sounds dumb doesn't it but this is the case here. A bank of six batteries, over six years old, used extensively, a battery charger a little undersized, and working bl..dy hard to charge stuffed batteries that will not accept or hold a charge..

The charger, a smart one too, thinks the batteries are flat all the time so it burns itself out doing its best. Now the boat owner has to buy new batteries and a charger.

Moral here is to keep an eye on your charger and batteries. If the charger is always charging and never goes to float or pulse mode, maybe you need to check further

What can you make aboard with minimal ingredients commonly in found your galley?

Sure you can bring meals from home, but what can you create when aboard?

From Sue van Velzen - Heatwave This never fail recipe was passed onto me in Vavau, Tonga from a family of 5 sailing the world from their home on the South Atlantic Island, St Helena. Their 38ft Bavaria yacht Carpe Diem, was a hive of activity with 3 young kids aged 5, 7 and 9 when we met them. We were impressed by the kids boat and dinghy handling skills, maturity and confidence in large groups.

This recipe is incredibly useful when bread is short and you may not have time to kneed or wait for the dough to rise - just mix the 4 ingredients in a bowl and cook. We make yoghurt onboard using esi-yo sachets or other brands and I try to have a plain yogurt in the fridge most of the time.

These flat breads are a great accompaniment to most meals, curries or cut into smaller portions as a snack with cheese and relishes.

Simple Flat Bread INGREDIENTS Roughly equal amounts of plain yoghurt and flour start with a cup of each pinch of salt teaspoon of baking powder DIRECTIONS Mix all the ingredients together to consistency of stretchy dough, adding more flour or yogurt as needed.

Break off handful amounts and roll or press flat into desired shape.

Either dry fry or add a small amount of oil to pan and lightly fry on each side until starting to brown.

Turn out onto paper towel and enjoy warm!

Owning it

PLEASE send us your penny dropping moment so the rest of us feel better….. especially me!

So, our yacht has two ‘heads’ or bathrooms, one at the front and one at the rear, in our master cabin.

I have never especially liked the ‘decor’ in them but not disliked it enough to try and change it.

We have owned this yacht for almost 9 years and it was only last year when, FLASH I had a rare moment of clarity and totally got the significance of the colour schemes.

The front bathroom is on the port side and has red fittings - mirror surround, towel rail, toothbrush holder, toilet roll holder, towel hooks etc. And of course, the rear bathroom on the starboard side has, you guessed it, green fittings. I have told a few people whose response is yeah, of course… and naturally Ron got it the first time he looked at the boat and didn’t think anymore about it!

Motuara Island Motuara Island was the location where, in 1770, Captain Cook proclaimed British sovereignty over the South Island. Motuara Island was burned off around the beginning of the 20th Century and was used to graze sheep and later used as an experimental Angora goat farm.

Highest elevation 128 m Motuara Island is a scenic and historical reserve that lies at the entrance to Tōtaranui / Queen Charlotte Sound. It is notable for the actions of James Cook.

During HMS Endeavour's stay at nearby Meretoto / Ship Cove, Cook climbed to the summit of Motuara, and formally (and controversially) claimed it and the adjacent lands in the name of and for the use of the sovereign of the British Empire.

The island is 59 hectares (150 acres) in size. Motu means island and ara is a path; hence, Motuara literally means the island in the path (of the canoes).

Māori activity at the time of Cook's visit: The entrance to Tōtaranui / Queen Charlotte Sound area was an important point of arrival and departure for the steady flow of trading waka (canoes) crossing Cook Strait, and Motuara Island was a staging post for people and goods crossing the strait, as well as a trading post for pounamu and pakohe (argillite).

People resided in kāinga (unfortified villages) near food gathering and growing places. Although the residents enjoyed long periods of peace, due to its strategic location over the years different tribal groups contested, fought and merged there; hence, the fortified pā upon a partly attached rocky islet off the south east point of Motuara Island. Whenever trade opportunities or strife loomed, people gathered at the pā. Today this islet is called Hippah Island, after the early British use of the word "Hippah" for any fortified Māori site. The islets cliffs provided protection in times of skirmishes.

At the time HMS Endeavour sailed into the sound, Motuara's chief was an elderly man named Topaa. He and his people paddled waka out from the pā and encircled the ship. In terms of first contact, it was friendly and prolonged encounter, smoothed by Tupaia, the Tahitian priest and interpreter.

As Cook wrote in his journal: “The inhabitants of this place invited us ashore with their usual Marks of Friendship, and shew'd us all over the place; which indeed was soon done, for it was very small, yet it contain'd a good number of people, and they had in it, Split and hanging up to dry, a prodigious quantity of various sorts of small fish, a part of which they sold to us for such Trifles as we had about us.

— James Cook, Cook's Journal: Daily Entries, During one of Topaa and Tupaia's conversations, Topaa said his ancestors came from Hawaiki. This is the same place that Tupaia came from.

Cook estimated the population in the Motuara, Ship Cove, Anahou area to number 300 to 400. He wrote: … they leive desperse'd along the Shore in search of their daly bread which is fish and firn roots for they cultivate not no part of the lands… This people are poor when compared to many we have seen and their Canoes are mean and without orament, the little traffick we had with them was wholy for fish for we saw little else they had to o dispose of, they seem'd to have some knowlidge of Iron for they very readily took Nails in exchange for fish — James Cook, Cook's Descriptions of Places Cook's exploration and claim During Endeavour's stay at nearby Meretoto / Ship Cove, James Cook and his crew explored and charted the sound, including Motuara Island. On 31 January 1770, Cook and his officers erected a flag post on the summit of the island, hoisted the Union Jack, and claimed Queen Charlotte Sound for his king.

Prior to the flag raising ceremony, Cook sought and gained permission from the Topaa and his people to put a mark on the island to prove that the British had been there. It is a matter of conjecture whether or not Cook overstepped his sealed orders from the British Admiralty, which read: You are also with the Consent of the Natives to take Possession of Convenient Situations in the Country in the Name of the King of Great Britain: Or: if you find the Country uninhabited take Possession for his Majesty by setting up Proper Marks and Inscriptions, as first discoverers and possessors — British Admiralty, Cook's secret orders, The way this act was commemorated on its 150th, 200th, and 250th anniversaries is an illustration of Cook's changing legacy in New Zealand.

On the 150th anniversary, a cairn was unveiled on the summit by the "Captain Cook Memorial Committee" to mark the occasion
