The WISHES Youth Enrichment program provides students with fun after school enrichment opportunities that are designed to enhance your child’s educational experience, as well as stimulate new interests in hobbies and recreational activities. Babysitter Training CourseRed Cross Certified Ages 11-18 (must be 11 years or older) This course is essential for any young person interested in babysitting! Students will learn about child development and handling emergencies, including rescue breathing, choking, first aid, preventing accidents, safety, feeding, diapering and more. Leadership and the responsibilities of the babysitter, as well as the expectations of parents and the business of babysitting are also covered. Participants will receive a Red Cross certificate, a babysitter’s handbook, a CD and a handy emergency guide. Students must attend both classes in their entirety to receive certification. Easy Dos: Back to School Beautiful! Ages 4+ Add a twist to your everyday hairdo, or help your daughter get ready for a beautiful, busy day by mastering easy-to-do dos for back to school! With the help of expert Great Clips staff, learn and practice easy up-dos, pony tails, French braids and regular braids. This is a fantastic class for dads who help their daughters with their dos! This class requires a buddy, and you will register as an “adult/ child pair.” One of you must have shoulder length hair or longer. Work together in a small group to make and take home goodies such as Peanut Butter Stars and Snickerdoodles as well as no-bake treats including Chocolate Scotchies. .........................................GENERAL & MISCELLANEOUS Speech and Debate Program Grades 3-6 Wayzata Speech and Debate Program is a perfect introduction to the rewards and exhilaration of communication for our elementary students. The objective of this program is to introduce and begin to hone students’ ability in the important leadership skill of public speaking. Students will employ different tools in their speech presentations. The students will enjoy putting down on paper their issues and positions appropriate to their age, and then use the various tools of public speaking like voice quality, tone, volume, articulation, pronunciation, eye contact, and body gestures to make an effective presentation. They will learn how to use different methods to move through their speech. The main skills we expect to use are memorization, full speech manuscripts, and outline. As our students practice these skills in their speeches, they will overcome nervousness when they speak, demonstrate confidence and feel more comfortable talking in front of an audience of any size. This program for beginners is an excellent jumpstart for those considering speech and debate in their higher grades. Even students that come to the program reluctantly leave excited and inspired by the progress they have made during the course. Styles of speech covered: Storytelling: Students perform a 5-minute memorized children’s story. Impromptu: Students are given simple topics and after 2-minute prep, speak extemporaneously on their topic. Expository Speech: Students write and deliver an informative or how-to speech – 5-minute memorized event. Policy Debate: This is an extremely complex form of debate in high school and college. It involves in-depth research and analysis of foreign and domestic policy, as well as philosophical concepts. Students in this workshop will gain a preview of what to expect in high school debate. Young Writers Program Grades 3-6 Communication is a skill your child will use for life. Your child will be able to use the techniques learned in the Young Writers program for writing essays to analyzing literary works. What’s the point of having a million brilliant ideas if you can’t communicate them effectively? This course will delve into five critical branches of writing: storytelling, narrative essays, expository essays, poetry, and journalism. Students will learn how to express their ideas clearly and thoughtfully, and analyze how famous writers like Ray Bradbury and O’Henry use literary devices to illustrate thematic statements. They will be able to use creative writing and thinking to tell their own stories as well. The writing artists teach your young writer to fall in love with the writing process and help develop the discipline required for writing. Individual needs of the student will be identified and our instructors will work closely with them in small groups to overcome their individual challenges. $129 for 5 classes; Center for Academic Excellence

The new Elite Chess Club is for intermediate and advanced students who are interested in more challenging lesson plans and longer playing time. This is an invitational class. Invitations are extended to those who have met the following criteria: 2nd grade and up; completion of the Cadet and Lieutenant Booklets; full understanding of the concepts in those two booklets; have scored 4.0 or more points in any one Youth Enrichment League (YEL) Tournament or have participated in three or more YEL Tournaments. Younger siblings may participate for no additional charge; younger siblings will be asked to quietly play chess games during the additional time. $129 for 8 classes; Youth Enrichment League

The new Elite Chess Team is for Grades 6+ and advanced grade school students. Take your chess game to a new level. Evening classes are taught by the best chess instructors in the state. Students who participate will be strongly encouraged to participate in the Youth Enrichment League (YEL) Middle School Chess League and at a number of tournaments. The chess season runs from early November through early April. See www.YouthEnrichmentLeague.com for league schedule and dates. Our goal is to have a competitive chess team competing with the best schools in the state. MN STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Grades 3-6 In an interactive environment, students will obtain hands-on learning experience in Science, Math, Technology, and Engineering. Students will be placed in level appropriate groups to enhance their experience. Using design and pattern association techniques, puzzles and games, students explore the application of math concepts. Students see math applied to real-world situations and will learn to tackle different challenges. Students build, test and revise LEGO Mindstorm (EV3) robots. They will explore the facets of robotics, including motors, touchsensors, ultrasonic sensors, sound sensors and light sensors. They’ll work together to build, test, and revise just like in a real engineering process, until they’re successful. They will be taught programming concepts through activities. They will learn how to code, create, and run programs using child friendly programing tools including MIT’s graphical programming language and projects from code.org*. Students will engage in various hands-on science experiments and improve their knowledge through quizzes and interactive Science Bowl formatted friendly competitions. *No prior programming skills are required to learn coding. The mathWiz program trains the young minds to translate words into math and helps develop problem-solving skills. During the sessions, students will explore patterns in a systematic, engaging and fun way and apply concepts to build a strong math foundation. Concepts are explored visually, verbally and symbolically enabling math students to be active learners. Problems discussed in the class are non-routine problem-solving questions that are adapted to math competitions like Math Masters and CML. The mathWiz F1* topics include Multiplication and Divisibility, Prime Numbers, Greatest Common Factor, Least Common Multiples, Parity of Numbers, Ratios Rates and Proportions, and other problem solving strategies in the areas of Number Theory and Pre-Algebra. mathWiz N1-Middle School As a parent, it is not your job to know the answers to your child’s math questions. With a nudge in the right direction, your child will be able to tackle the tough homework problem on his own. At these mathWiz Enrichment classes, we’ll provide the strategies that your child needs to come up with the solutions/ explanations on their own - either for their homework problems or a new concept that was introduced in the class. Discover Racquetball Grades 1-5 and Grades 6 -12 Discover how fun and exciting the sport of racquetball can be in this six-week program for youth. The Discover Racquetball curriculum was designed by Hall of Fame coach and legend, Steve Strandemo. Steve was ranked top 10 in the world for 10 years and has written three best selling racquetball instructional books. Also, the instructors for this class have a combined 70 years of racquetball experience and are all level I Certified Instructors at Life Time Fitness. Students should wear comfortable gym clothing (e.g. shorts and t-shirt) with sneakers or tennis shoes. Racquets, goggles, and balls will be provided. Destination ImagiNation is a worldwide creative problem solving competition for kids. Teams of six to seven members work together to use creativity and critical thinking skills to solve challenges without assistance from adults or any other non-team members. Students develop leadership, performing, writing, technical, building and teamwork skills as they develop creative solutions! The team chooses one out of five Team Challenges to solve over a 12–16 week period and then presents their solution at a regional tournament. The team also solves one Instant Challenge at the tournament. Each Team Challenge is designed to be openended and solvable in many ways and on many levels. Parent volunteers are needed to serve as Team Managers. Training opportunities and written materials are provided. Form a team and register today! Violin and Cello Lessons with MacPhail Center for Music Grades 2-5 Wayzata Schools Community Education, in partnership with MacPhail Center for Music, offers quality after-school and evening violin and cello lessons. MacPhail Teaching Artists offer small group lessons to students in 2nd and 3rd grade, and private lessons to students in 4th and 5th grade. Weekly lessons begin in late October and continue through early May, ending with a spring concert. Instrument rental is also available.
