elcome to the summer 2014 WISHES Youth Enrichment catalog. The WISHES program offers a variety of summer enrichment classes for students in grades K-8. Participation in the WISHES program is a great way to help your child build confidence and self-esteem, explore interests in greater depth and develop new hobbies and recreational interests. There is a handy chart on the inside back cover to help you plan your summer! Please note the location of each class. Most classes will be held at Kimberly Lane Elementary – 17405 Old Rockford Rd, Plymouth and West Middle School – 149 Barry Ave. N, Wayzata. Transportation is NOT provided. Room numbers are subject to change and will be posted at the school. The registration forms and information are on the back pages. LEGO® Minecraft Engineering (LEGO® and Papercrafts) Grades K-4 From the hit video game, Minecraft, comes our awesome LEGO® and Papercrafts class. Student builders will be creating mob figures, custom blocks, torches, mosaics, custom biomes and terrains from the Minecraft Video Game! We will use both cardboard Papercrafts and LEGO®s to create our worlds. Builders will be challenged to bring their virtual designs from the game to life and get to take home a daily project. Most materials will be for class use only. Take-homes include: a mini handcrafted LED lit Redstone torch, LEGO® Micro-biome, two LEGO® micro-figs, and two Papercrafts. Art Adventure: World Myths and Legends Grades K-5 Are you ready for an epic voyage of art making and storytelling? Explore the histories and mysteries of ancient cultures with hands on messy art projects including paint, sculpture and collage mediums. Discover the past while you learn to use many mediums to create one of a kind works of art. Learn how to draw the Trojan horse, paint a Viking ship, design your own hieroglyphic document, and create a fairy tale for a set of Russian nesting dolls. Projects are developed to provide each camper with a unique experience that nurtures their individual creative spirit while building friendships, gaining artistic understanding, and - most importantly- having fun! Animal Kingdom: Fur, Fins and Feathers Grades K-5 Explore the animal kingdom through a variety of art projects. Checkout all kinds of cool creatures and the places they live. Learn to draw, sculpt and paint the easy KidzArt way! Draw a Red Panda using colored pencils, sculpt a giant fish out of paper, and use acrylic paint to create a painting of a Spotted Leopard in desert grasslands. Woodworking Grades 2-6 Make a bat house (Bats are an ecologically friendly way to control the mosquito population), a puppet theater, a squirrel lounger and book holder. Make, paint and take home four projects while learning craftsmanship, including: measuring, safely cutting and crosscutting, drilling, clamping, hammering and more. SAFETY IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY. Hogwarts Film School Grades 2-5 Join in the escapades of Harry and his friends. Let’s create and make some fantastic Harry Potter movies. Student working in teams can recreate and film scenes from the movie, books, or use their imagination to create your own Harry Potter Adventure. We will have Harry Potter LEGO® Sets, backgrounds and various props for use in class. Handle all of the technical details including using a digital movie camera, filming scenes, stop-motion animation, downloading footage to the computer, digital editing and adding finishing special effects and transitions to the movie. In this exciting hands-on learning class, our instructors will take your student through the entire digital film making process from start to finish using Frames Software. Student groups’ final projects can be emailed to parents or students may bring a USB jump drive the last day to take home their films immediately. Minecraft is a sandbox building game, that’s been dominating the world of video gaming for the past few years. In our course, explore, learn, problem solve, and create amazing and unique worlds together using Minecraft for the PC. This class is for Beginner and Intermediate Minecrafters. Students will be playing in a custom created world, on a special MinecraftEDU modded Server. We will be learning Minecrafting basics, following a progressive story of survival on a desert island and then learn to work collaboratively to survive. Work towards a common goal of solving the mystery of the island and conquering the tyrant in charge. At the end of class, students will be given complete creative freedom to develop our island. Student will be working on individual computers. Minecrafting in Real Life Ages 5-7 All new builds and backdrops to choose from! Minecraft is the LEGO®-like sandbox building game, that’s been dominating the world of video gaming for the past few years. In our course, experience Minecraft in real life, building landscapes, mountains and terrains out of LEGOs®. Recreate the Nether, biomes, forests and more. Then working in teams use our LEGO® versions of creepers, endermans, village people, sheep, ocelots, mummies to create a mini stop-motion movie to immortalize your LEGO® creations on digital film. Take home two microfig LEGO® Minecraft-inspired animals and your own Minecraft movie, using official Minecraft soundtracks and sound effects. Create YOUR OWN VIDEO GAME! Love video games? Students as young as 5 years old can create their own video games in this cool class! Choose your storyline with dragons, princesses, or wild wacky aliens; add challenges and levels of difficulty, then share by email or post on the web to challenge family and friends. Now the 5-8 year olds can practice math, logic, and programming and put their video game talents to work! Game will be in an animated flash format, viewing in most internet browsers. DESIGN, DISCOVER, DREAM-UP in this girls only class! Using “Alice”, an innovative 3D programming software, students will design an animation for an interactive game, movie or story. This object-oriented program is fun and challenging, as students discover the art of video game programming using 3D graphics in a virtual world. Students working on their own computers will learn the basics of making objects, people, animals and vehicles that move and react in a virtual 3D World. COMPUTER & TECHNOLOGY ........................................ PC/XBOX 3D Game Design Grades 2-5 Learn to create 3D games and challenge your friends on an Xbox 360® or a Windows PC. Kodu, Microsoft’s award-winning game design platform, is a new visual programming language that runs both on the Xbox 360 and Windows PC. We will be creating games for the PC version and using Xbox controllers. Students working on individual computers will learn the art of rapid game design and develop an understanding of underlying game mechanics. Students can choose from 20 different game characters – including flying saucers, submarines, and a Pac Man-like Kodu main character – then use an interactive terrain editor, a bridge and path builder, and other tools to create their own 3D game world. Kodu is available for Xbox for about $5 or a free download for windows. Games created are platform specific, but programming environment is the same in both. Bring a USB drive to save your games on the last day or they can be emailed to parents. Ultimate Movie Making for Girls Grades 1-5 Do you want to make your own super cool girly movie? Using the coolest characters around, from LEGO® Friends to Barbies, it’s now up to you to create a movie including developing the characters, a script and set. Then it’s lights, camera, action! as you learn to produce a stop motion film with a small group of friends. Aligned with most schools’ IT base, this class is it taught on Mac based systems. This educational program is for elementary and middle school students who want to excel in Math and Science. During this camp, dancers learn and perform a new dance production called Beauty and the Beat. Beauty and the Beat takes place at fictional Greenberg Jr. High; a school divided. The Beauties, as they have become known, are a quiet group of individuals who follow the rules, get good grades, and spread the beauty of ballet wherever they go. The Beats, are energetic, full of creativity, and leave an echo of hip-hop wherever they go. The two Greenberg groups clash until a new kid comes to school. “The Kid”, sees the value in both the beauty and the beat and tries to bring both groups together. When “The Kid” suddenly falls ill, the Beauties and the Beats decide the only cure is to collaborate an epic performance including every type of dance they know. No experience necessary! Students in this class will learn all aspects of repairing and rebuilding bikes including: gears, brakes, wheel truing and re-greasing. Demonstrations will be done on bikes supplied by the instructor. Basic physics will be explained in the demonstration, including simple machines, gears, levers, and mechanical advantage. Students will then work on bikes donated by local police departments. Students will be able to keep the bikes and bring them home after class! Instructor will provide all tools and cleaning materials. Some spare parts will be available for student use. If students wish to buy parts for their bikes, parents can purchase parts on their own or from the instructor at wholesale prices. K-One Summer Math by Mail has been developed to review and enrich math concepts for students just completing kindergarten or students just completing first grade. Summer Math By Mail is not a tutoring program and it is not designed to advance students ahead. It offers practice of previously learned concepts to keep skills sharp and build confidence. Students will receive a pre-test and fill out a questionnaire to individualize their program, then participants receive ten weeks of lessons. After students have completed a week’s worth of work, they mail it in. We then make corrections, provide comments and mail it back. Students work at their own pace. Kids love receiving their returned assignments each week in the mail! When all lessons are completed, students will receive a certificate of achievement. Math By Mail for Middle School and High School Prep Grades 6-8 (and advanced 5th grade) It’s Here!! Keep young minds active with the locally developed Math-By-Mail curriculum. Math practice accompanied by enrichment activities for the upcoming summer months. Created by current middle school math teachers with 40+ years of combined experience! Minnesota State Standards, Math Frameworks MCA strands, and current Minnesota Benchmarks are the foundational basis for this curriculum. With creative problem solving, multiple choice, short answer and vocabulary embedded into an 8-week course of independent study, students will maintain or increase the level of their math understanding in addition to reviewing the recommended targets suggested by grade level in the Minnesota School Academic Standards of mathematics. Each student will receive a pre-test in mid-June to assess the appropriate skill level necessary to strengthen their individual math needs, unlike other programs that are exclusively grade level driven. Students will receive 8 packets to complete at their own pace throughout the summer. As students finish packets, they are mailed back for feedback and then returned to the students. All packets are due back by August 14 in order to provide timely feedback before the 2014 school year begins. Bella Voce (Wayzata Summer Girls Choir) Grades 4-8 Do you love to sing? Would you like to make music with a group of singers as passionate as you? Look no further! Bella Voce (bella vo-chay; Beautiful Voice) is a non-auditioned, summer girls choir consisting of singers across the district entering 5th-9th grade. You can expect a week of emphasis on vocal technique, repertoire that is both challenging and yet engaging for singers at this age (types of music performed range from baroque to multicultural to pop), performance etiquette, and building strong, trusting friendships within the group. At the end of the week you will participate in a concert, featuring the music you’ve been introduced to and mastered within the week! Bella Voce is founded and directed by Katie Baker, who has been a middle school choir teacher in the Wayzata district for 12 years, has provided private vocal and piano instruction to students for 15 years, and has brought girls together across the district for the past six years to participate in Bella Voce. Girls in this group will not only grow in their vocal and performance skills, but they will experience a supportive team environment where they can make connections with students in other grade levels/buildings and with the music, as they can go deeper into the meaning, background, and context of each piece. Elementary Track Event Grades K-6 The Wayzata High School Track and Field Coaches are offering track meet events for boys and girls in grades K-6. Students will be divided by age group, with the youngest age groups starting first. Ribbons will be awarded to the first six placers. Participants need to bring running shoes and a water bottle. Using your Visa/MasterCard/Discover, you can register immediately online at: www.ceregistration.wayzata.k12.mn.us Please note: Parents must register the child that is taking the class (the child’s name must show on the roster). Please do not register yourself. Make sure to note at which school the class is being held.

WISHES registrations may not be sent or dropped off at your child’s school or Home Base site. They are not permitted to accept them. Register as soon as possible; certain classes fill up very quickly. Online registration will have priority. Confirmations/Waitlist You will receive an email confirmation ONLY if you provide an email address when you register online. Otherwise, assume you are in the class unless you hear from us. If you waitlist your child, you will be called ONLY if a spot becomes available.

Cancellations • You will receive a full refund if you cancel 3 business days (M-F) before the class starts. • No refunds will be issued the day of the class or after the class starts. • We reserve the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment.
