We were born into a world with Harvest Gold appliances in our kitchens, giant shoulder pads on our dresses and Michael Jackson on the radio. Times have changed. But our mission has remained steady: to serve the emerging needs of our students, their families and the broader community.

Beginner Stained Glass Window

Come ready to create a beautiful stained glass window approximately 8" x 10". This class is for both beginner and experienced stained glass participants! The copper foil technique will be taught, from cutting to assembly. The first night focuses on choosing a pattern (calla lily or sailboat) and discussing colors of glass, equipment and layout. Tool kits are provided. This class includes one free Saturday morning Open Studio visit!

Beautiful Glass Mosaic Garden Stepping Stone

Using precut glass, design and create gorgeous stepping stones for your garden. Patterns are available or bring an outline of a child’s hand to make a unique keepsake. Fused Glass Decorative Dishes NEW

Create up to two small décor dishes —one round and one square preferably (approx. 3.5" or smaller).

Use your dishes to hold jewelry, dish scrubbers, dipping sauces or as a spoon rest. Choose from a variety of glass colors. Instructors will be available to demonstrate technique, explain the process and help with your design! The glass used is food safe. Fused Glass Night Light

Light up a space in your home with a unique fused glass night light.

This piece makes a great gift too!

Each light cover is approximately 3" x 4.5" in size. Participants will choose a curved or flat design.

Fused Glass Garden Decor

Add some flare to your garden with colorful fused glass. Create garden stakes, suncatchers or colorful totems. Due to the firing process, you will have to return to the studio one to two weeks after the class to pick up your project.

Enjoy an evening of fun to learn the art of book folding. You will learn how to select and read patterns, how to choose the right book, and the techniques for basic book folding. Leave class with a unique piece of art and a new skill.

Glass Mosaic Table Lamp or Candle Holder

Heart of Glass: Fused Mosaic

A heart of glass personalized for you, and just in time for Valentine’s Day! Snip and overlay colorful fused glass pieces to create your mosaic heart (approx. 7" x 7").

Palette Up! Alcohol Ink Painting Workshop

Experiment with alcohol inks on Yupo paper. The non-absorbent nature of Yupo means it will not buckle, no matter how much water you put on it, and it makes colors more vibrant and brilliant than on standard papers as all the color sits on the surface. Alcohol inks are pigment-intense and vibrant, free-flowing and filled with an energy all their own. Pottery Wheel Throwing— Beginners

Palette Up! Acrylic Pouring 2.0 NEW

Come see what the latest craze is about and experience the magical world of fluid acrylics and pouring medium. Version 2.0 brings different tools and techniques than previous classes. No experience required to learn how to create the same beautiful abstract canvases you see on Pinterest. Instead of paint brushes, we will use a variety of tools to create our works of art, including sink strainers, plastic bottles, and pull chains. You will create two paintings on 8" x 8" canvases and a box will be provided to transport them home.

Learn how to throw bowls, cups and plates as you master the basics of wheel throwing. Come prepared to have fun and get dirty!

The instruction and demonstrations will focus on the fundamentals of the pottery wheel, glazing and firing. For the final session of class, participants must attend Clay Open Studio on a Saturday morning or a Wednesday evening to glaze and finish their pieces.

You can pick whichever Open Studio visit best fits your schedule.

Once you’ve got the basics down, purchase a punch card and become a regular at Open Studio to continue your projects!

This bird bath is made with an 8" terracotta drip tray. It is decorated with pieces of stained glass then grouted at the next class. It is beautiful when completed! It can be placed on the ground, on a wrought iron stand or other fun possibilities. We will discuss how to add a water pump for those interested in continuing their project at Open Studio.

Are you ready for the next step in your clay experience? Build upon the basics of creating clay pieces with this intermediate-level class. You will experience making more advanced shapes and forms including faceted bowls, altered forms and lidded jars. Unique Glass Mosaic Mug Planter or Garden Stake NEW

Create a unique mini planter or pen cup using a coffee mug, or a colorful garden stake with cut glass. The glass is precut and stencils are available. The first night we will design and glue the glass to the project. The second night we will grout the finished project and learn about mosaics.

Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for health of the mind and body.

BARRE Fitness is a total body conditioning program that blends classical ballet exercises with Pilates, yoga and strength movements. Burn fat and increase lean muscle mass with this low-impact form of exercise. We will use the ballet barre as well as center work to perform a variety of exercises to target multiple muscles with each movement. This class will provide results quickly, improving muscular strength and stability, endurance, flexibility and balance. Please bring 2-3 lb dumbbells and a mat to class.

Gentle Yoga

A breath-based class that incorporates a soft, nurturing, slow-paced and relaxing practice. We will incorporate gentle flows as well as passive and supportive poses that are perfect for the beginning yogi, people who are working through injury, have limited mobility or simply want a gentler class. My famous ‘10 Minute Miracle Exercise’ will strengthen lower body muscles quickly. Learn how to rid yourself of excess water weight and bloating. You’ll learn acupressure points for improving lymph circulation and drainage. If you don’t have time/money/inclination to haul yourself to a gym several times a week, you will love these powerful and effective techniques.

We work to enhance balance, flexibility and core strength. Facial movement incorporated with Pilates exercises. Standing functional training and more will be included in class. This class is geared towards the beginner that is new to Reformer Pilates. Reformer Pilates exercises will cover principles like breath, core stability, elongation, spine articulation, alignment and quality of movement. Strengthen your core, overall body strength, flexibility and joint mobility. Taught by comprehensively trained Pilates trainers and physical therapists.

Join the party! This Latin-inspired dance fitness class incorporates international music and Latin dance movements for a dynamic workout. We will combine fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body and achieve a unique blended balance of cardio and muscle benefits for amazing results. Learn to create delicious fish dishes using a few basic techniques. This menu starts with a mixed greens and garden vegetable salad with a homemade creamy garlic dressing.

We’ll grill fresh tuna steaks with a fabulous Mediterranean style relish served with pasta tossed with garlic in olive oil. Moist, flaky Atlantic salmon is slow baked with an oven dried tomato and dill butter sauce. Walleye pike will be lightly breaded and pan-fried to a crispy golden brown and served with homemade tarter sauce and mashed potatoes. Key lime pie finishes topped with fresh whipped cream. The Art of Sushi

Come explore the world of sushi as you create this Japanese delicacy yourself. We’ll begin by preparing the coveted sushi rice then you’ll learn the art of “nigirisushi” (hand molded rice) topped with shrimp, unagi and ahi tuna.

You’ll then learn how to prepare “maki-sushi” using a bamboo mat to roll rice with various fillings in and around Nori (seaweed sheets).

Beginning in the 1690’s, food in the U.S. Deep South was heavily influenced by early settlers from France, Germany and Spain.

Slaves from Senegal, Africa, Cuban refugees and Acadians from Nova Scotia, Canada also contributed to the medley of flavors using the wealth of local seafood, vegetables, poultry, livestock and of course, pecans. Join us in creating a memorable meal to include: crab dip, traditional cheese straws, gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, buttermilk biscuits, cheese grits, pecan praline candy and traditional bread pudding with bourbon sauce. A typical Indian meal combines salty, sweet, creamy, spicy, hot and pungent flavors. The basic menu is usually comprised of starch, a meat or fish main dish, vegetables, and chutney. This class will explore the many facets of Indian cuisine, and give you confidence to prepare these dishes on your own.

SafeKids 101 will train them so both of you will feel more confident about their safety at home and in the community. The best way to spark enthusiasm for a language is with a topic that students love. Vamos con los animales! (Let’s go with the animals!) is just that. For eight jam-packed sessions, students will blaze new trails “visiting” a pet store, a family farm, the zoo, the ocean and even the rainforest–all in Spanish! Your child will learn animal-related vocabulary and catch glimpses of some special animals who call Latin America their home, all the while applying practical phrases and Spanish vocabulary to every topic. (Grades K–5) Come discover your mind, body, and heart connection. Each class has a kid-friendly, mindful theme that can be used as daily reminders. Classes consist of breathing exercises, physical movement, yoga poses/flows, mindful art, music, and much more! Developing mindful skills at a young age can teach kids calming techniques, coping skills, and to share strengths with others.

Our lessons and curriculum are crafted by Olympic Fencing Coach Ro Sobalvarro. Students pair up and practice the fencing move or concept, rotate partners and repeat. Kung Fu–Wu Shu (Ages 5+)

Not just a punching, kicking, self-defense class. Kung Fu teaches awareness of self and surroundings and improves self-esteem and confidence. Join a fun, full participation class that focuses on helping students develop leadership, discipline, concentration and coordination skills for a healthy mind and body. Improve your coordination, strength, flexibility and endurance. Learn the lifelong benefits of Kung Fu, the Chinese art of self-defense and fitness, from a Hong Kong champion. Class is designed for youth beginners ages five and older and adults.

Parents, don’t just sit on the sidelines. Register and participate with your child in class. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to class. Optional uniforms and certification for white to black belt available in class for an additional fee. Instruction is supervised, but may not be delivered directly by Al Lam. Star Wars™, Robotics, and Engineering! Using the “Micro Scout” LEGO® Mindstorm® Robotics System’s microcomputer for the brain of our droids. Use the built-in light sensor, motor and sound to bring our droids to life.

Create familiar Star Wars™ droids or use the force to create droids of your design. Learn about robotics and engineering as we build the base models, then customize the droids. ScienceWiz (Grades 2–6) A fun and enriching program that allows students to discover the fulfillment of science. Each class emphasizes a different subject, allowing students to explore many components of science. We engage students through demonstrations and discussions of real world events.

Students will sculpt their critical thinking/problem-solving skills while analyzing and interpreting scientific data. The course ends with the Science Bee Competition on May 16 at Central Middle School. The competition fee is included in the course fee. Community Ed updates its look After a year-long brand review process involving a broad cross section of staff and community members, Community Ed is introducing an updated brand, just in time for its 40th birthday.

Highlights include a stronger logo that celebrates our relationship with the Wayzata Public Schools, simplified language that makes it easier for people to understand our programs and services, and more consistent and integrated communication with our customers.

In the new logo, below, the name Community Ed sits atop the strong foundation of Wayzata Public Schools. The district laurel, with leaves representing each of the eight communities we serve, gives us a nudge forward, helping us constantly grow and change.

Minnesotaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s community education network was launched in 1972. That year, the Minnesota legislature appropriated funds to establish 67 local community education programs and have them operate through local school districts. Why? To serve emerging community needs. Our program was launched eight years later, in 1980.

In 2017, our Early Learning School established a community outreach team. We partner with organizations like Interfaith Outreach, Hennepin County Libraries, Park Nicollet and apartment community managers to help us connect with families who may be uncomfortable coming to our school, or unable to get here.

This fall, our Early Learning School is moving to a new location, immediately adjacent to Oakwood Elementary School. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have more space, more light and more greenspace. The school serves newborns to 5-year-olds and their families with preschool and ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) classes and important early childhood servicesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;early childhood screening, intervention and outreach.

As part of Community Ed’s rebranding process, we are changing the names of our popular school-based childcare programs, currently Bright Start for 4-year-olds and Home Base for K-5 students. The new name aligns both programs with our school district and simplifies things by giving parents and kids only one name to remember. While the new name is not official until Summer 2020, we are talking about it now to assist with the transition. There will be no change to the programs, only the name.

More than 1,000 youth say â&#x20AC;&#x153;YESâ&#x20AC;? to volunteering All Wayzata High School students are eligible to join Club Y.E.S. (Youth Extending Service). Incredibly, over 1,000 students make that commitment to our school district and community every year.

New auditorium now available for community rentals The renovation of the Wayzata Central Middle School auditorium is finished. Work on the space wrapped up in November, just in time to serve as the venue for the 7th Grade Band Concert. The acoustics and the band received rave reviews. Cancellations, Withdrawals & Refunds We reserve the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. If that happens, we will notify you via email or phone and your payment will be refunded in full.

If you withdraw from a class at least three business days before start of class, your payment will be refunded in full. If you withdraw at a later date, there are no refunds.

Cost Costs vary by class. You can find the class cost and any additional fees by looking at the online course description.

Discounts If you are enrolled in UCare, you may be eligible for a $15 discount. Have your UCare ID number ready when registering. You must register by phone to receive this discount.

Weather If school closes during the day due to weather, we will cancel all Community Ed classes and activities.
