Facebook basics Guidelines for using Social Media in Wayzata Public Schools can be found at www.wayzata.k12. mn.us/socialmediaguidelines. Please make sure to read through these before setting up or using any Facebook page for your classroom or project.

Facebook Page Timeline (Facebook Wall) Facebook Pages help us share our stories and connect with people. Our stakeholders can like our pages to get updates about our activity. When you go to your school Facebook Page you will see what is called the Timeline or Profile page which is the collection or stories, photos and updates that tell your organizations story.

As a page admin, a button will appear at the top left corner to access the Admin Panel.

Notification of “likes” and comments, new page “likes”, messages, page editing, audience building tools, page Insights (analytics) and Facebook help menu are accessible from the Admin Panel.

How to post on your school Facebook page as Your School Page (instead of posting on your school Facebook page as yourself) When “Posting”, “Liking”, “Commenting” and “Sharing” on the school Facebook page that you are an administrator of you can easily switch between posting as the Facebook page and your personal page by simply click on the “Change to” link at top of page.

How to use Facebook as Your school facebook Page Sometimes you want to use all parts of Facebook as your school Facebook page not as yourself. You would need to do this if you want your school Facebook page to “Like” other pages, “comment” on other page posts or “share” other page posts, etc.

To use Facebook as your school Facebook page instead of as yourself, click on “Edit Page” in the admin panel of your Facebook page and select from the drop down list “Use Facebook as (insert your school page here)”. You will now be free to post on that page, “Like” other posts, “Like” other pages, etc. as your school page instead of as yourself.

Once you change to “Use Facebook as Your School Page” you will be able to use Facebook in a similar way that you do as an individual. Some useful things for you to check while using Facebook as your page include:

1. Facebook Page Newsfeed: Click the Facebook icon in the top left hand corner to see your school Facebook page newsfeed. Here you will see all recent posts by other pages that your page “Likes”.

This allows you to interact with these pages.

2. View new “Likes” of your page. This is a great way to see who is liking your page.

3. View private messages that are sent to your page and respond to them.

4. View any interaction with page posts such as “likes”, “comments” or “shares”

Connecting with other Facebook Pages How to Like another Facebook Page 1. Start by making sure you are using Facebook as your page not as yourself. Follow the preceding

section on “How to use Facebook as Your School Page”

2. On the top of your page, there is a search box. Start typing the name of the business or

organization that you want to connect with in this box. In this example, we will use Wayzata Public Schools Careers.

3. Once you start typing the business or individual name, it will populate a list of businesses or

organizations that match the name you are typing. If there are a few of them, select the correct one you intend to like.

4. Once you have found the one you intend to like, click it so it directs you to their

Facebook page. Select “like” to follow their news and updates.

Now that you have liked the page you want, you can tag them in your post. See below for directions on how to tag other pages in a post.

How To Tag Other Pages It’s always a positive thing to give other pages credit for something they have done or said

– you can do this by mentioning or “tagging” them in a post. This helps build relationships and gives your post credibility.

1. Start by making sure your school

Facebook page has “liked” the Facebook page you want to tag.

To “Like” another page follow the instructions in “How to Like Another Facebook Page” in the preceding section.

2. When you decide where you want

the tag to be in your post, type in the “@” sign and follow it by typing the Facebook page you want to tag. This will generate a drop down list of pages you have liked.

3. Find the correct business or

organization you would like to tag in your post, click the name and it will appear in a blue color in the post. The tagged Facebook page will allow users to click and view that page.

4. Follow the tag with a message of your choice.

Tip: Posting a

photo is a good way to increase engagement with your page.

See page 9 for more information.

After posting your page will look like this (note the page is in blue type and when clicked the user will be taken to the tagged page): If you do not see the business or page that you want to tag, chances are you have not Liked their page.

You need to search for the business or page and Like them before you can tag them in a post. See directions above on “How to Like Another Facebook Page�.

Posting on Your School Facebook Page How to Post a Link with Thumbnail

1. Copy the long link from the original webpage you want to share:

2. Paste the link into your post. A thumbnail will

automatically appear with a photo, post title, and a short summary of the post. You will also have a choice to upload a different image if you do not like the image that automatically appears.

3. Once the thumbnail appears you may delete the

link and replace it with a message of your choice.

Click “Post” to post onto your Facebook wall.

Your final post should look something like this:

How to use Google URL Shortener to Shorten Links Before Posting (goo.gl) When you want to post an article and would like to include the link on the post but don’t want to clutter your Facebook post with a long webpage link, you can use the Google URL Shortener (goo.gl) to shorten the link and lead users directly to the article.

You may want to have goo.gl open in another tab/window for your convenience.

1. Login to your Google isd284.com account. By logging into your district Google account it will allow you to track clicks for the links you shorten. This is a great way to see how many people are reading your content.

2. Go to the website of the article you want to share on your Facebook wall. Copy the original link.

3. Go to goo.gl and find the box below the words “Paste your long URL here:” and paste the URL you want shortened in the box as seen below:

4. After pasting the URL into the box click on the “Shorten URL” box:

5. This will generate a short link for you. Click “Copy” to copy this link to use in your Facebook post.

6. On your Facebook, write a message about the

article you are going to post and then paste the link you copied from goo.gl. Click “Post” when you are finished.

7. Your final post, with a shortened link, should look

like this when you are done

How to Post a Link with a Photo Statistics show the Facebook users engage more with photo posts more than any other type of post. In order to get more interaction with an article or other website information you are sharing you may want to post a photo and include a link for people to read more information. It is easy to include a link to an article or webpage with your photo description.

1. On the status option, select “Photo/Video.”

2. Select “Upload Photos/Video.”

3. This will give you the option of uploading an image from your computer. Select “Choose file.”

4. Since the image was uploaded from your computer, it

will not direct viewers to a website. You can still provide a link with the image, by adding the link into your photo descriptions when posting. You will want to follow the tips provided in the “How to use Google URL Shortener to Shorten Links Before Posting” section of this guide.

Facebook Insights: See Activity on Your Page Interested in what posts are most popular and have the most engagement? Want to know the age, location and other interesting details about your audience? Check out your school Facebook page Insights for detailed statistics and data to help you understand your page activity and audience.

To view the Insights section on your school Facebook page go to the page and at the very top of the admin panel towards the right hand side click on “See insights”. Insights are available on your page once you reach 30 Likes/Fans.

Once on the Insights page you will be able to click through the menu across the top of the page and see information about “Likes”, “Reach”, “Visits”, “Posts” and “People”. Feel free to click through all the choices and look at the information provided. You will see there is plenty of information about your page that can help inform you on your posting and interactions on the page.

HOW TO USE MOBILE FACEBOOK APPLICATION Facebook provides a free page manager mobile application. Make sure you use this application when managing your page. To download go to your application store and search “Facebook Pages Manager” and download the application.

Open the application and login using your Facebook login information.

You will then have access to the page you manage.

On the home page you see several choices including left to right: menu

private messages

notifications

You also have a “write post” and “share photo” choice below main navigation.

To create a post click onto “write post” and you can begin to type in your post.

You may add a photo to your post by clicking on the camera icon.

If you click on the clock icon you can schedule the post.

To tag a photo type @ and immediately after typing the @ sign type the name of the page you want to tag.

Notice the drop down menu of choices of pages that will pop up, select the correct page, it will automatically populate the post.

To publish your finished post click on the “Post� button. Your post will now be published on your Facebook page.
