Character and Scholarship for Life WHS Student Receives a Perfect Score on AP Exam

Wayzata High School Junior, Allison Sholl, was one of only 22 students in the world to earn every possible point on the AP Macroeconomics exam. Allison took the exam after being a student in John Poeschl’s AP Macro class last year. Looking across approximately 4.5 million AP exams taken by 2.5 million U.S. public high school students in 2015, only 322 students earned every possible point on an AP exam, a rare accomplishment. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALLISON!

WHS BAND NEWS

World renowned composer and conductor, Jack Stamp, will be in residence with Wayzata High School’s Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensemble, conducting three days of rehearsals and the performance of his pieces. Band students have been preparing diligently for this great world-class experience. Dr. Stamp will be here at the high school on January 27, February 8 and February 9. The concert is on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. All are welcome to attend! Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens.

Please take some time to peruse our counseling office website; it contains a great deal of useful information, including sections dedicated entirely to testing, post-high school planning, and many other topics! Please take a moment to view them if you were unable to make it to the evening events.

Counselors’ Corner 2016-17 Course Registration

Registration information for the 2016-2017 school-year will be presented in Advisory on Wednesday, February 10. Please take some time to look through the Registration Guide (which is only available online) with your student(s) and help with careful class selection. It is often difficult or impossible to change courses/schedules once initial selections have been made. All students need to take a full course load next year (16 credits) and need to carefully select at least 5-6 alternates (the scheduling office needs several options that a student would be happy with, should they not get every class initially requested). Students need to register online by Friday, February 26, as well as turn in a completed registration form to their first block teachers on Wednesday, February 24.

Ninth Grade Group Guidance

Group guidance for 9th graders will be on Wednesday, Feb. 10. The counselors will discuss registration for 10th grade and review high school graduation requirements. The 9th graders will also receive their transcripts (the first transcript they will receive with grades on it) and will hear an explanation of how to read the transcript, how to compute GPA, etc. Please ask to see your student’s transcript, and please take some time to review it together.

Sophomore Group Guidance

Sophomores will meet with their counselors on Thursday, Feb. 11 for their group guidance sessions. Transcripts will be reviewed as well as graduation requirements, and counselors will discuss registration for 11th grade. Please ask to see your student’s transcript and please take some time to review it together.

Junior Post-High School Planning

Spring of the junior year is the time for students and families to get serious about post-high school planning. It is also a good time to meet with your student’s counselor regarding post-high school plans and options. Counselors are available throughout the school day as well as during conferences, so if you would like to meet with a counselor, please call the counseling office ahead of time to schedule an appointment – we would hate to be unavailable if you just drop in!

Financial Aid Information Opportunity for Parents / Guardians

Families can now complete the form used in applying for financial aid (FAFSA) for 2016-2017 online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. A new service offered by the counseling office this year is the FAFSA Completion Workshop, an opportunity for families to receive help in completing the FAFSA. Four financial aid professionals from local colleges will be in our first floor computer labs (B106 and B107) from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016 to answer questions and assist families with the FAFSA. Items to bring to the FAFSA Completion Workshop are: 1. Social Security Number 2. Driver’s License Number (if you have one) 3. 2015 Tax Returns for Student and Parent (if filed) 4. Information on Savings, Investments, and Business and Farm Assets for Student and Parent 5. Records of Untaxed Income

Reservations are not needed; please stop in at your convenience between 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. A drawing to win a $500 scholarship will be held. We hope you can join us!

Selective College Workshop

Representatives from some of the more competitive national colleges and universities will be at Wayzata High School at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, for our Selective College Seminar. Colleges represented in the past have been Northwestern University, the University of Notre Dame, Washington University (St. Louis), MIT, Georgetown, and Macalester. Each representative will give an overview of his/her school and its admissions process, followed by a question and answer session. The general information presented may apply to other selective colleges as well, not just the schools represented that evening.

College & Career Center Local Scholarships

There are over 30 local sponsors and organizations who are offering scholarship opportunities this year. Last year, over $90,000 was awarded to seniors! The first local scholarship deadline is quickly approaching…all applications must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5. This deadline is for the local scholarship packet which uses a shared application. All other local scholarships use separate applications and have various deadlines. Students can pick up scholarship packet information in the CCC. All local scholarship applications can be found on Naviance. If students have any questions about the local scholarships, they can stop by the CCC or email Deb Musser at deb.musser@wayzata.k12. mn.us. The CCC is open every day 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

ACT & SAT Test Prep Materials

Test prep materials for these exams are available in the CCC. Students can pick up free practice test booklets and can also check out various books from our library.

PSAT Score Reports & Booklets

Score reports for students who took the PSAT exam last fall have arrived and students can pick up their report and booklet in the CCC.

Junior Group Guidance

For juniors who missed their group guidance session in January, they can stop by the CCC to pick up their transcript and other handouts that were provided by their counselor.

College Visits

NDSU, Gustavus, Normandale Community College, Dunwoody, North Hennepin Community College, UND, Southwest Minnesota State University, Bethany Lutheran College and Michigan Tech are just a few of the colleges who have reps visiting WHS soon. Students can view the scroll-

ing TV’s in the school hallways or access Naviance for an updated list of colleges that will be visiting. To attend the visits, students need to stop by the CCC to sign up and get a pass for each visit.

Job Postings

New part-time job opportunities for students are now available and are posted on the Job Postings board in the CCC!

QuestBridge Presentation – Tuesday, February 9

QuestBridge is a powerful platform that bridges the nation’s brightest, under-served youth with leading institutions of higher education and further opportunities. QuestBridge provides a meeting point which links exceptional students with colleges, scholarship providers, enrichment programs, employers, and organizations seeking students who have excelled despite obstacles. By facilitating these exchanges, QuestBridge aims to increase the percentage of talented low-income students that can attend the nation’s best universities. Two Wayzata High School seniors were recently awarded QuestBridge scholarships and will provide a presentation to students who are interested in knowing more about the QuestBridge’s program and application process. The presentation will be held on Tuesday, February 9 at 2:30 p.m. in the CCC. Registration for the presentation is not required.

Hennepin Technical College (HTC) Tour

Juniors and sophomores are invited to tour HTC on Thursday, February 18 during 2nd and 3rd blocks. This is an opportunity for students to visit the school and see their technical programs in progress. Students are required to ride the bus and will receive a school authorized absence. Students will arrive back to WHS by 12:15 p.m. and will attend 4th lunch. Students can pick up a Tour Permission Form in the CCC. The form must be signed by a parent and returned to the CCC by Wednes-

College & Career Center day, February 17. Only 40 students can be accommodated for the tour, so sign up early! Applications for attending HTC in the 2016-2017 school year, will be accepted in the Counseling Office beginning Friday, February 19. It is first come – first served, with priority going to juniors.

Each of the scholarship websites list their specific requirements and deadlines. Students should allow 10 school days prior to the scholarship deadline if a transcript or letters of recommendation are required.

Prevention 101

Prevention science has evolved in recent years to the point where evidence based practices and effective programs lead to positive changes at a population level. Scientists and researchers continue to identify effective interventions to help prevent risk behaviors before drug abuse occurs. Collecting data helps us to better understand the problems youth are exhibiting and what risk and protective factors they possess. Not only do we need to assess the problems but we also need to understand the nature, extent and impact the problems have on individuals, families and the community.

One example of assessment is the Minnesota Student Survey that will be administered to ninth and eleventh grade students on February 12th. Most importantly, it will provide key stakeholders with rich data that includes the tremendous amounts of assets our youth possess as well as what we as a community can do to bolster protective factors. We can then prioritize our efforts to address underlying factors driving a problem. An example of this could be access to alcohol. We would need to start examining why this is a problem. Where are youth getting alcohol…from home, a twenty-one year old or an older sibling? Data can help us narrow down the local conditions we have in our community. Our very own Partners in Prevention is an example of a group of community volunteers who are passionate about prevention and who want to roll up their sleeves and dig in for the health and safety of our youth. Wayzata Public Schools is blessed to have such active parents that can be involved in the role of prevention in our community. Prevention is a slow process and the dividends of the work come slowly but they do come. The process involves changing perceptions which we all know is difficult to sometimes nudge the needle towards a change. As adults, it is important for us to have the correct data/information so we can have conversations with our youth about reality and misperceptions. An example of this is hearing your youth exclaim “everyone is using an e-cig now!” We know youth are enraptured by this device saturating the market and the flavored juices available, but the truth is that it is still a relatively small number of youth engaging in this behavior. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the use of electronic cigarettes more than doubled among America’s teens last year from 4.7% to 10%. Not good but not “everybody”. Prevention is part dispelling the myth and introducing the reality and the Minnesota Student Survey will bring us that. In short, it will give us the good news with the not-so-good news. Data drives the work of the coalition and reaffirms the assets of the community and helps point to the areas of concern. Partners in Prevention is always looking for community members who love to contribute to healthy youth development.

Around WHS

The 5th Annual Survivor 2016 April 18 – 22 Applications will be available the first week of February for all students and staff interested in applying to be a contestant. The applications are available in B207. There is a $5 application fee due when submitting the completed application.

“Wayzata Survivor Week” is a Student Council event to raise money for Fund-A-Need. “Survivor Week” operates similar to the popular CBS show. Contestants spend five days at the school with time allotted for homework, sleeping, and activities. They are not allowed to leave the school campus for the duration of the event. The “survivors,” a group students and staff, will compete in activities that challenged their athletic, academic, and creative abilities, with a contestant or two voted off each night. At the end of the week, one of the remaining contestants will be crowned the “Sole Survivor”.

National Spanish Exam Info

All students who have registered for the National Spanish Exam should be receiving an email in early February with additional information about how to prep for the exam. All updates will come by email and a reminder to please mark Friday, March 11, 2016 on your calendar as there are no make up dates for this exam. Around WHS SCUBA TRIP SUMMER 2016

Does your child have aspirations of becoming a Marine Biologist or have a love for the ocean and a desire to SCUBA dive? Well, we have a trip for you! Wayzata High School will be taking students on a trip to Grand Cayman Island this summer. As part of this trip, students will be certified to SCUBA dive, and will spend eight days on Grand Cayman Island SCUBA diving and learning all about the marine ecosystem of the Caribbean. The cost of the trip is $2800, which covers all costs: SCUBA certification, airfare, food, lodging, dive equipment and textbooks. The trip will take place the last week of July (spills over into August). This trip is open to all students who are currently in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. WHS Students to Nominate Fellow Students for Good Deeds

WHS Students, thank you for your continued efforts this year around leadership and character! As you may have heard announced in Culinary recently, WHS is giving you the opportunity to recognize the good deeds executed by students and encouraging you to recognize their deeds by giving them a character card award. These character cards can be picked up at the box on the wall outside of each floor office. You will be able to write the name of the student and the good deed the person has performed. So go out and recognize your peers!

We will have two seniors speak at Commencement; one speech will be chosen by the students in the senior class and the second speech will be chosen by the faculty. Seniors who are interested in speaking must: 1. Enlist the help of a staff member who will act as a mentor. Mentors MUST approve and sign off on the final copy of the speech. Speeches should be no more than 3 – 5 minutes in length. 2. Prepare a typed speech, have your mentor approve it (by signing off on the hard copy), and submit to Ms. Beatty in the 2nd floor office. You must also email your speech as a Word document attachment to kathy.beatty@wayzata. k12.mn.us. The electronic version must be received NO LATER THAN 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11. The signed/hard copy version must be received in the 2nd floor office NO LATER THAN 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 14. Speeches will be posted by the end of the day on Tuesday, March 15 near the 1st & 2nd floor offices. Speeches will also be available online for voting. The Feb/March time frame at the high school is a busy one, and this month’s PTO article focuses not only on upcoming PTO events, but also 2016-17 class registration and postsecondary planning activities, along with tools parents can use to help their student(s) make the most of them. Food Donations: We need 42 salads/side dishes and 20 desserts to complement the Famous Dave’s BBQ purchased by the PTO. We are looking for a variety of salads: Caesar salad kits, fruit, veggie trays, pasta, Greek & other ethnic salads. For desserts, homemade bars are the most popular!

Parent Volunteer Help: Serve a 1.5 hour shift at the dinner assisting Y.E.S. students with setup, food prep & clean-up. We are also looking for leadership for this event for next school year!

Registration & Post-Secondary Planning

Registration for 2016-17 opens February 10. Our PTO parent liaisons identified several items particularly useful to both the registration and high-school planning processes (see below). In addition, you may wish to attend Curriculum Night on Thursday, February 18 @ 6:30 p.m. at which parents and students will have an opportunity to talk with teachers about coursework offered through each department.

• Class of 2017 and Beyond Graduation Requirements – You can use this handy checklist with your student(s) to make sure they are “checking all the boxes,” in selecting coursework that fills those requirements. • Important Dates – This contains important test dates, including test registration deadlines. PTO News PTO from Page 10 • Group Guidance – Student group guidance sessions are held periodically throughout the year, for each grade level. The juniors’ winter session was held in January. Freshmen and sophomore sessions will be held 2/10 and 2/11, respectively. Session presentations are viewable online, directly following the meetings, and contain helpful registration info, including some great new courses that will be available as of next school year.

• Information for Parents/High School Year-by -Year –this information by grade level will be extremely useful in helping you support your student with time- critical considerations, at each level in their high school careers.

Test preparation information can be found through the Guidance and Counseling pages: <Link to Test Prep Information>. Finally, Term 3 conferences will be held on 2/25, 3/2, and 3/10. These are great opportunities for you and your student(s) to discuss any questions or concerns with their Term 3 teachers – watch for the WHS conference registration announcement!

Around WHS Winter Semi-Formal Dance & Casino Night Saturday, February 6, 2016 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Tickets – $10 (if purchased prior to the dance) or $15 at the door! All proceeds from this event are going to the NHS Heart Week Charity: MRD–363 Days Food Program www.mrdinc.org The Dance and Casino will be held in Wayzata’s GYM area. Students must bring socks to wear during the event! To prevent damage to the gym floor, students must check their shoes! NHS and Student Council students are providing a SHOE/COAT CHECK! We cannot be responsible for holding purses, cameras, cell phones, car keys, etc. Students must be prepared to hang on to their own valuables.

The tickets price includes admittance to the event and 5 Casino tickets. Students should bring extra money if they would like to purchase items from the BPA-sponsored concession stand or if they would like more Casino tickets.

Tickets are available for $10 on E-Pay (www.wayzataschoolspayonline.com)and will be sold during lunch periods through Friday, February 5. We STRONGLY ENCOURAGE students to purchase tickets ahead of time! Long lines at the door for those who did not pre-purchase tickets should be expected! Students must have their student ID to purchase a ticket. PARENTS – please have your student work with you to purchase a ticket on E-Pay so information is entered correctly. WHS on-site dances are open to current WHS students and their guests. Non-WHS students must have a completed Guest Registration form on file before they will be allowed to enter the dance. gether a safe AND fun night to remember for our 2016 graduates takes time, money, volunteers and some creative ideas. Thanks so much to all those who have volunteered their time, provided donations and assisted on the party committee. We certainly appreciate it and there is still much to be done! Fundraising and Donations – We rely on the various fundraisers sponsored throughout the year as well as any donations provided on behalf of the party. Fundraising efforts help keep the cost of tickets affordable for all (although no student will be excluded based on an inability to pay - scholarships are available). Attached is a donation form (corporate or personal). Donations can be mailed to the contact on the donation form or dropped off at the WHS main office (please identify by labeling them “Senior Party” when dropping off). Bake sales to raise money for the Senior Party are on Thursday, February 25 and Wednesday, March 2 from 3:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. during Parent/Teacher conferences. Registration for Spring Trojan Tots Opens March 15!

We invite you to consider enrolling your child(ren) in the spring Trojan Tots preschool session. Trojan Tots preschool is run through the high school’s Child Psychology II course and is open to all community preschoolers who are 3 – 5 years old and potty-trained. The high school students plan and present daily learning activities in the areas of science, math, art, music, and language development. Movement activities and snack will also occur each day.

The link will take you to the Total Registration page where you will register for all AP exams. If you have taken AP exams at WHS in the past, you will use the same account you used in prior years. Register and pay by March 30 for $65 per exam! Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) students - $10 per exam

The FRL rate is available to students currently enrolled in the Federal Free and Reduced (FRL) Meal Program. We do check each registration so it is important that you only select this option if you are enrolled.

This show features freshman and sophomore theatre students. 12 Angry Jurors is a dramatic exploration of our criminal justice system featuring the junior and senior theatre students. It follows the deliberation process of 12 jurors after a high-stakes murder trial. Winter Coffee House took place January 8. We had a great group of performers and a crowd of over 100 people attend. It was a great time for all. Thanks to the Drama Board Committee members who made this such a success. Our Competition One-Act, The Debutante, performed in January and was such a delight to watch. The director was Grant Sorenson, a 2008 graduate. We were so proud of our cast and crew!

Athletics 2015-2016 Wayzata High School Athletic Registration Information All participants in athletic programs at Wayzata High School must be fully registered prior to the athlete’s first practice/tryout. Note: Student-Athletes may participate in only one athletic program per season. This also includes Showstoppers (fall) and Clay Target (spring).

A student-athlete who has transferred to WHS during their high school career, is moving into the school district, or is a foreign exchange student should register in person accompanied by a parent/guardian. You must complete the following steps to be cleared for participation:

Step 1: Submit a current Sports Qualifying Physical Examination dated after 6/15/2013. Form must be signed and dated by a physician. Well-child physicals will not be accepted. Form must clear student for Athletic participation. Sports Qualifying Physical Exam can be faxed to 763-745-6625 or dropped off at the Wayzata High School Activities Office.

Step 2: Submit the 2015-2016 Minnesota State High School League/Wayzata High School Athletic and Activities Eligibility Form. This form must be turned in each school year. Submit form at www.wayzataschoolspayonline.com. Step 3: Fee Payment. Submit payment at www.wayzataschoolspayonline.com. If you are paying in person, you must pay with check or cash. If all three steps are not completed, your student will not be allowed to participate, tryout, and/or receive any equipment. Please complete steps in order.
