A Note to the Reader
M PL
E
Deep in the forests of Michoacán, Mexico, there is a natural sanctuary for monarch butterflies. The sanctuary encompasses about 300 square miles, but the forest is disappearing, and soon the monarch butterflies will too. Loggers are cutting down these forests, and if deforestation continues, the butterflies and their sanctuary will soon be lost.
SA
This fictitious Comprehension-based™ reader was inspired by the monarch butterflies and their migration to Michoacán. It relies on 74 unique high-frequency words in Spanish. Written primarily in present tense, it contains a manageable amount of vocabulary and numerous cognates (words that are similar in two languages), making it an ideal first read for beginning language students. All vocabulary is listed in the glossary. Keep in mind that many verbs are listed in the glossary more than once, as most appear throughout the book in various forms and tenses. (Ex.: I go, he goes, let’s go, etc.) Language that would be considered beyond a ‘novice-low’ level is footnoted within the text, and the meaning given at the bottom of the page where the expression first occurs. We hope you enjoy the story!
