Welcome Philanthropy is an essential component of our success as an independent school, and I am grateful to the many friends and families who include Waynflete in their giving each year. I am excited to present this year’s Report on Giving and to share some of the exciting developments underway as a result of our community’s generosity.

In May, we broke ground on a new Lower School, and bid farewell to the Hewes Wing, which served us well for many decades.

In the following pages, you can read a remembrance of the Hewes Wing in a piece that Debbie Rowe, longtime early childhood educator, graciously penned. Our Lower School groundbreaking ceremony was momentous for our community, as these plans have been in process for three decades. We are all excited to watch the new facility take shape over the coming year.

Last fall, we moved our crew program to a new home off Commercial Street with full-time water access. The result has been transformational for our crew team and coaches. You can read more about this exciting project in a story about the origin and growth of our crew program.

Our endowment grew in exciting ways as well. With help from former parents Keith and Maria Canning, two new endowments were established honoring Upper School Dean of Students and lacrosse coach Cathie Connors.

Finally, as many of you know, Waynflete mourned the passing of beloved history teacher Debba Curtis in May. Please take a moment to read Alice Brock’s remembrance of our colleague and friend.

WAYNFLETE CREW finds a new home on the Fore River

WHEN Catherine “C.C.” Stockly signed on as a volunteer Waynflete rowing coach in the fall of 2007, the school’s crew program had a dozen athletes, two boats, one safety launch—and no dock. When the tide was out at the Fore River Fields put-in, rowers had to lug their shells across the muddy tidal flats to the water’s edge. The program was informal and barebones, with few organized races. Off-water training took place in the garage of a Waynflete parent.

“We always had a blast, though,” says C.C. “There is a simple beauty to muddy boats and cold feet. With crew, there is a certain pride in being as tough as you can be.”

C.C. became head coach in 2009. She made efforts to further open the crew program to students from other high schools, and interest began to grow in Greater Portland.

NEW DIGS Waynflete’s new Head of School, Geoff Wagg, began meeting with members of the community in fall 2013. “I remember Geoff asking me what he could do for the rowing program,” says C.C. “I jokingly said, ‘you could get us full-time water.’ Little did I know that he would be calling me three weeks later to tell me it was a done deal.”

Geoff had reached out to Phineas Sprague, son of alumna Mary Lou Thomas Sprague ’46 and an avid rower who competed at Tabor Academy and Harvard. Phineas owns Portland Yacht Services, which at the time was constructing a new waterfront facility on Commercial Street, west of the Casco Bay Bridge. He generously leased a 200-foot stretch of waterfront to the school for a decade.

no disadvantage. This is a real benefit to us, since we have so many new students entering in high school.”

With a new location secured, C.C., her husband (Waynflete alumnus and former trustee Ayres Stockly ’82), and Ayres’ parents made generous donations to kick off the dock fundraising initiative.

MORE TIME ON THE WATER With additional help from early supporters, the school began a complex permitting process involving the city, the state, and the Army Corps of Engineers. The new dock and launch were

constructed in winter 2016, and crews began using the new site this past spring. “Occasionally we can’t go out due to wind or ships on the water,” says C.C., who now checks in with the Portland Harbormaster before every practice.

“But it’s a world of difference from the previous location. Now we have the potential to practice on the water every day.”

The new facility has allowed for consistent scheduling, which means easier time management for athletes and less absenteeism. C.C. expects to see a positive effect on year-over-year absenteeism. “Rowing is a technical sport, with a significant skill set,” she says. “It’s a simple equation: more time on the water equals better rowing and better fitness. Both of those elements make boats go faster.”

FOUR TO EIGHT Fundraising for a new boathouse is already underway. The facility would make possible a goal that has been on the horizon for years: shifting the program from exclusively fourrower shells to include eights. C.C. is convinced that this change would result in a rapid increase in the number of rowers—particularly from outside Waynflete—and could also lead to the creation of a summer program.

“I also believe that we’ll hit critical mass at some point, and that other complementary programs will start up nearby,” she says. “Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, and Scarborough have enough interested kids, along with the necessary resources and access to water. It would be a wonderful scenario to have all of us focused on building interest in rowing in Southern Maine.”

Debba Curtis

“Debba’s contributions to Waynflete are immeasurable...

Her love of history was inspiring, and her ability to ignite her students’ love of learning became legendary.”

I HAVE A VIVID MEMORY OF meeting Debba in 1984 when she was hired to teach at Waynflete. The first time we shook hands, she was smiling broadly and holding her infant son, Will, in her arms. Debba was a vital part of our community from then until the spring of 2016 when illness suddenly necessitated what we all hoped would be just a temporary leave of absence. It was a crushing blow to learn that Debba would not be coming back; even now, it is impossible to believe that she is gone.

Debba’s particular passion was U.S. History, especially Constitutional Law and civil rights, including the civil rights of students. She designed many courses with these themes in sharp focus, including her eighth- and eleventh-grade U.S. History classes and her highly popular junior-senior electives: American History Since 1945 and the Bill of Rights. Yet Debba’s love of history also extended to the ninthgrade Western History course, which she taught for many years, and even to an elective on the history of Japan.

How do we say goodbye to this remarkable woman? Debba’s contributions to Waynflete are immeasurable.

In these ways and many others, Debba always sought to broaden her own knowledge and to share it with students with her unique blend of intellectual excitement, high standards, and often raucous humor.

First and foremost, she contributed her two fine sons, Will ’03 and Ned ’08.

She was also an incredible educator whose students stood in awe of her encyclopedic mind; indeed, she was Waynflete’s Google long before Google existed. Her love of history was inspiring, and her ability to ignite her students’ love of learning became legendary.

Outside the classroom, Debba was a beloved advisor, a director of the eighth-grade musical where she introduced a new generation to the Gilbert and Sullivan classics, a coach of Mock Trial and Harvard Model UN competitions, and a sponsor of a popular Current Events activity. It is no

surprise that Debba was so beloved by students and their parents and deeply appreciated by her peers.

Debba never wanted to miss out on anything, including her own eulogy, which she asked Lowell and me to compose and to share with her before her death. In vintage Debba style, she put it this way, with a twinkle in her eye: “Would you mind reading it to me in advance since, you know, I’m not going to be there for the service?”

Debba’s desire to hear her own story brings to mind her desire to know everyone’s stories. In fact, Debba’s love of stories and of passing them on to others was one of her defining qualities. Once, when confronted with having spread some gossip, she answered—again, with that characteristic twinkle—“Don’t you know not to tell me anything? I am Radio Free Waynflete.”

If she could enhance a story, all the better, and many a story she shared bore the stamp of her embellishment.

(Yet the events of her own life needed no enhancement. Who else among us ever packed a pistol as an assistant district attorney in New York City or played poker with Paul Newman? Yes, it’s true, she did!)

of suffering throughout her life, most notably the death of her precious daughter Victoria and the steady loss of her vision. She faced every trial with exceptional courage and dignity. Her final challenge was coming to grips with the fact that she would never be able to return to Waynflete, a school she loved fervently, and that her life would be ending far too soon. Yet even then, Debba’s spirit remained indomitable, she found solace in spending time with family and friends, and she reveled in stories.

Perhaps the reason that Debba loved the enhanced story so much is that she herself was one. Like the best story, her life was brimming with unexpected plot twists, humor, and high drama.

Like the best story, Debba leaves us feeling forever changed, and like the best story, she is unforgettable. Perhaps we don’t need to say goodbye to her after all because, even now, Debba remains larger than life and will long be integral to the spirit of our school.

DEBBA CURTIS FUND for STUDENTS IN NEED In the final months of her life, Debba initiated a conversation with Waynflete’s Development Office about how she wanted memorial gifts to be directed. Debba was particularly passionate about ensuring that financial aid recipients had the ability to participate in all aspects of school life. With her blessing and guidance, we established The Debba Curtis Fund for Students in Need as a permanent tribute to her legacy.

Personal Best Keith and Maria Canning recognize Cathie Connors with the establishment of two endowments in her name

KEITH AND MARIA CANNING had an idea. It was spring 2016, and their daughter Isabel ’17 had just finished her junior year (Sofia ’14 had graduated two years earlier).

“We knew that we wanted to make a significant gift to the school,” says Keith.

“Because of our daughters’ experiences here, Waynflete was at the top of our list.” But the Cannings wanted to ensure that their gift had a long-term impact, and that it would honor a faculty member who had played an essential academic and athletic role in both daughters’ lives: Upper School Dean of Students Cathie Connors.

Working with Head of School Geoff Wagg and Director of Development Sarah Plimpton, the Cannings developed a plan to establish two endowments—one aimed at financial support for students, the other intended to support athletes and their coaches. Both endowments would be in Cathie Connors’ name.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Maria and Keith remember well their first visit to Waynflete. They were (and continue to be) supporters of the public school system—both their daughters had attended Longfellow Elementary in Portland prior to moving to

Waynflete to attend middle school. The Cannings knew they would love the smaller class sizes, but they recall coming away from their campus tour with much more—a palpable sense of engagement and energy from students and teachers alike.

As the Canning sisters moved through middle and upper school, Keith and Maria observed how Waynflete catered to their daughters’ different learning styles and stretched both girls to their full potential. “There is no hiding at Waynflete,” says Maria. “Every student is known. Every child has to show up and participate. The result is that both of our daughters grew to understand precisely what kind of learners they are, and that they both want to be engaged in their education.” After graduating, Sofia and Isabel picked smaller colleges where they would be able to form relationships with professors, just as they had with their teachers and advisors at Waynflete.

HELP FOR FAMILIES, STUDENTS— AND COACHES The Cannings support the school’s belief that diversity is a condition of excellence. “No matter who you are, you will be accepted and embraced at Waynflete,” says Maria. “We want to help sustain the school and see kids from all kinds of backgrounds thriving here. This is why it was so important to us that one of the endowments focused on tuition assistance.”

Keith and Maria also believe that individual and team athletics are important components of a well-rounded education. They recognize that for some families, the additional expense of gear or the cost of meals while traveling to matches can be a burden. The athletic endowment aims to defray some of these costs and ensure that more students have the opportunity to participate.

The Cannings built flexibility into the athletic endowment to ensure that funds could also be used for coaches to attend professional development opportunities. “The girls’ coaches were really much more than coaches,” says Maria. “They were role models, and they carried them during the times when they needed support. They’re honorable people, with lots of integrity, and they are always giving of themselves.” The Cannings believe that this ethos starts at the top with Athletic Director Ross Burdick. “The sportsmanship awards seem to matter more to Ross than anything else,” says Keith. “I think that says a lot about him and the school.”

HONORING CATHIE Like many Waynflete parents, the Cannings are struck by the faculty’s deep level of commitment. “As life presents challenges— and it always does—the kids are supported,” says Keith. “The list of faculty members who deserve recognition is a long one.” But from the moment the idea of named endowments began to form, there was no question in either of their minds about who the recipient should be. “We both thought, ‘let’s honor Cathie,’” says Maria.

“Cathie is all heart—someone who shows up every day, for our daughters and so many other students, in school and on the field,” says Keith. “Sometimes we make the mistake of waiting until the end of a career to recognize someone who stands out.

We wanted to change that pattern. Our hope is that these endowments will encourage Cathie and others to keep doing their good work.”

As the Cannings finalized the details of the endowments, they reflected on the kinds of role models they wanted for their daughters outside the home—individuals who supported their girls’ hopes and dreams, honored their differences, and embodied qualities like perseverance, consistency, and integrity through their actions. “We wanted to honor Cathie, but the reality is that we see this kind of character in so many of the faculty and coaching staff at Waynflete,” says Keith.

“Now, when I see these qualities starting to manifest themselves in the positive choices that Sofia and Isabel are making as young adults, it just amazes me.”

Meet Our New Lower School Director, Anne Scribner Hopkins

ROOTS

As a college student, Anne Scribner Hopkins never imagined becoming a teacher. Yet her noteworthy educational career now spans close to 30 years— and has its roots at Waynflete.

After graduating with an economics degree, Anne returned home to Maine in search of work. She tutored math students at Waynflete, also working in the Afterschool program and coaching middle school girls basketball. After a chance encounter with an encouraging educator, Anne began teaching middle school mathematics teacher at Renbrook School in West Hartford, Connecticut, then moved to Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Anne would spend the next 27 years at Shady Hill serving as an elementary school teacher, a middle school math teacher, and eventually, a mentor teacher to graduate-level educators.

PEDAGOGICAL PARALLELS “There is no other school in the country that is more closely aligned with our teaching philosophy than Shady Hill,” says Head of School Geoff Wagg. “The thematic approach, the emphasis on progressive education—these are hallmarks of both schools. It was a natural place for us to look for someone with energy and perspective who could lead our Lower School program.”

Shady Hill’s “central subject” approach closely mirrors the thematic studies program in Waynflete’s Lower School. “The idea is to integrate subject areas to form a more holistic approach to a study,” says Anne. “Teachers might start with literature—to capture interest through story—then explore a people at a particular time and place in history.” This kind of study allows teachers to dive deep into children’s expressed interests, pursue depth over breadth, support highly integrated curricula, and make links to current events. “The ancient Greek study allows for an in-depth

look at democracy, particularly in an election year,” says Anne. “Mythological heroes might enable teachers to talk about courage—and also what it takes to be a courageous fourth-grader.”

This approach allows children to enter into the learning process “where they are” and extend as far as they can. “Differentiation happens naturally through these thematic studies,” says Anne. “Students practice their skills, develop new techniques, and engage in critical thinking.

Our teachers can serve a wide range of learners and captivate a broad base of interests.”

TRANSITION YEAR When previous Lower School Director Ben Thrash decided to relocate with his family to Finland, Waynflete considered the idea of appointing an interim director for the 2017-2018 academic year—a period when classes would be temporarily relocated to the Arts Center and to modular classrooms on Waynhenge. “But the faculty expressed the importance of having a new leader in place during the transition year, someone who they could go through the experience with while planning for the move into the new school,” says Geoff. The school’s search attracted a large pool of highly qualified candidates. “Anne quickly rose to the top of our list,” says Geoff.

The search committee recognized the veteran lower school faculty’s desire for a leader with deep knowledge and experience. “Anne knows what quality looks like, and she knows how to provide a vision for what an outstanding elementary school program can be,” says Geoff.

“After we hired Anne, I received emails from individuals who knew of her work at Shady Hill. They were writing to tell us that we made a

great choice. This is a testament to her strength as an educator.”

Anne agrees that this is an ideal time to join Waynflete, particularly during a period when lower school faculty are taking on additional duties during the next academic year. Instruction and community-building is a full-time job for teachers during a regular year. For 2017-2018, teachers have the additional challenges of setting up temporary classrooms—making them novel and fun for students—and contributing to a series of complex decisions prior to moving into the new building. “There is a lot of excitement and momentum right now,” says Anne. “Teachers are eager to talk about who we are as a school, what we value, and how we’ll nourish and grow our program in the new space.”

HOME TO MAINE Anne’s children Roan (Grade 7) and Caileigh (Grade 5) are excited to be in Maine with their American cousins. (The rest are in Scotland— Anne’s husband, Jake, who is a teacher at North Yarmouth Academy, is an ex-pat.) Fun fact: Jake previously served as assistant director of athletics at Shady Hill before becoming an elementary teacher in 2000. His successor? Ross Burdick, Waynflete’s current athletic director.

Anne attributes much of who she became as an educator to her early experiences as an associate director of a summer camp. “It was all about the social and emotional development of children, and that’s what my work in education is today,” she says. “I have been lucky enough to spend the past 28 years in institutions that support the development of the whole child. It’s the thread that runs through my entire career, and it’s what drew me back to Waynflete.”

HEWES MAGIC On May 19, 2017, over 700 members of the Waynflete community took part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Lower School. While Founders Hall is being renovated, the Hewes Wing—home since the 1960s to science labs, locker rooms, and most recently the school’s Early Childhood and Grade 2-3 programs—has been razed to make room for the new structure. Longtime Lower School teacher Debbie Rowe shares a tribute to Hewes.

I WAS A TEACHER in Hewes for 17 years.

Every fall, when we prepared the classrooms for our young students, I was amazed at how pristine our space looked. I was also rather shocked at its appearance when we packed up for the summer ten months later. In the times in between, though—when Hewes was filled with active, busy, noisy, and even messy students—the space overflowed with beauty, magic, and the hum of activity as more than 100 young children sought to make meaning of the world around them.

Even now, having seen the void that exists where Hewes was, I wrote an entire first draft of this

essay in the present tense, as if Hewes still stood.

For those of us lucky enough to have occupied Hewes over the years, it was a canvas, a sanctuary, a laboratory, a workshop, a stage, and a home—a place where dramas both large and small played out, a place where our stories were told.

The walls of Hewes could tell so many stories— the story of the three-year-old saying goodbye to her parent for the first time, the first lost tooth, or the first words read. They could tell the story of first efforts at writing, Independent

Projects, and fifth graders practically bursting at the seams, ready to take on the next chapter in their lives. Those walls could wax on about a million moments, high and low—of skinned knees and deep friendships, of transporting Global Focus weeks and meaningful moments with Buddies, of learning about weather vanes and immigrating to America, of dissecting owl pellets, and Genius Hour.

The walls of Hewes didn’t just house students and teachers. There were those who stopped in just once and those who daily and lovingly waxed the old linoleum until it glowed and cleaned away paint, juice, sand, and many objects best left unnamed. There were those who built (and rebuilt) the cubbies that contained the endless array of items that young people need at school, particularly during Maine winters.

There were those who preserved cabinets and shelves, who reconfigured risers, bulletin boards, and even those very same walls about which I am writing. There were those who served as guides to hopeful new families, helping them to

see a glimpse of the magic within. And of course the families, parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and visiting family friends from near and far—all shared time and experiences, large and small, in Hewes.

It was where songs, journals, and poetry were written, where paintings and drawings were created, equations tackled, and experiments attempted. It was a place where adults and children came together to try new things, to make mistakes, to celebrate birthdays, to share successes, to make friends, to laugh, and even to cry together. Inside the walls of Hewes, our youngest students learned how to be together, to ask questions, and to discover answers.

Hewes was more than its cinderblock walls, drop ceilings, pedestrian carpeting, temperamental heating system, and occasionally too-high windows. The walls of Hewes held us all and held magic!

Vergn E. Hewes The Hewes Wing was named to honor a beloved science teacher The Hewes Wing was named for Vergn E. Hewes (1889-1992), a beloved biology, zoology, and chemistry teacher. Miss Hewes was hired by Waynflete’s founders in 1914 and retired in 1968.

home school “Building Waynflete” Exhibit Brings the History of the School’s Houses to Life

There was a familiar item on the agenda when Waynflete’s Gallery Committee convened in spring 2016. Committee members had previously discussed the idea of an exhibit composed of artifacts from the school’s archives. The challenge lay in determining how to make the exhibition coherent and meaningful.

INSPIRATION CAME from art teacher Jona Rice’s wife, Jamie, who directs library services at Maine Historical Society. Jamie suggested an exhibit focused on the architectural history of Waynflete’s buildings. It was a timely idea, as preparations were already underway for the groundbreaking of the new Lower School—the latest example of Waynflete’s transformation in Portland’s West End neighborhood.

The anticipated scope of work was intimidating. Who would conduct research?

Where were the images and artifacts and how would they be organized? How would they be reproduced and presented along with labels? Into the role stepped Deborah Sampson Shinn—a member of the school’s board of trustees and parent of alumna Miranda Shinn ’13—bringing with her decades of professional experience from her role as a curator at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. “Deborah is a generous

person,” says Visual Arts Chair Judy Novey.

“This was a way of showing her love for Waynflete by calling on a skill set that not many of us possess.”

Deborah’s research took her to Maine Historical Society, the Osher Map Library at USM, Greater Portland Landmarks, and the Waynflete Archives (the source of most of the exhibit’s physical artifacts). She constructed a detailed history of Waynflete’s original “houses” as well as the civic, business, and personal stories of their inhabitants. “Deborah’s scholarly research for ‘Building Waynflete’ was born out of her professionalism, curiosity, and affection for the school,” says Judy. “Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was her writing.

It had to be accurate, articulate, and concise.

It was a huge amount of work, and she did an incredible job.”

Celebrating Philanthropy The 2016-2017 school year was an exciting one for our community, and I am proud to celebrate the 1,250 donors who made it so. On the following pages you will see the current parents and grandparents, alumni and former parents, faculty and staff, foundations and businesses, and many other friends of Waynflete who made our mission a philanthropic priority. We are a stronger school as a result of their enduring generosity, and for that I am so very grateful.

Thanks to our many donors, annual giving in the 2016-2017 year yielded $838,000— Waynflete’s highest year on record. While these gifts supported every aspect of daily life at our school, they made the most difference in the day-to-day lives of our teachers and students.

In addition to a strong year in annual giving, we were fortunate to announce and celebrate the early success of Building on Our Strengths, Waynflete’s largest-ever capital campaign.

Through this effort, we are funding construction of a new Lower School, increasing our endowment for students and faculty, and bolstering the Waynflete Fund. Our early campaign supporters have generated incredible momentum, and we are grateful not only for their outstanding generosity, but also for their unwavering confidence in our vision. With more than $8 million raised toward our goal of $10 million, we are well-positioned for a strong and exciting campaign finish by June 30, 2018.

Waynflete Welcomes Two New Trustees in 2017 Warren Valdmanis Warren Valdmanis is a Managing Director at Bain Capital Double Impact, the social impact fund under the broader Bain Capital umbrella. Previously, he spent over 11 years working in Bain Capital’s private equity business. Warren received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a B.A. cum laude in Economics from Dartmouth College.

He lives in Portland with his wife, Kristin and their four children: Lizzy (’23), Ian (’25), Anna (’28), and Teddy (’30).

Vin Veroneau Vin Veroneau was born and raised in Portland. He received his B.S. in Finance from the University of San Francisco (1985), an M.B.A from the University of Southern Maine (2002), and a J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law (2006). Vin is the President and CEO of J.B. Brown & Sons. Vin and his wife, Nancy, reside in Portland. They have six graduates of Waynflete: Andrew (’07), Margaret (’08), Joseph (’11), Catherine (’13), Martha (’13), and Anne (’16), and two other children: John (’18), and Michael (’21).

Over the past several years, Waynflete’s endowment has grown significantly and remains a cornerstone of the school’s financial wellbeing. Annual distributions from the Waynflete endowment supplement tuition revenue and annual giving and contribute significantly to operational expenses including financial aid, faculty support, and other key programs.

Over the years, Waynflete has received a number of planned gifts from alumni, friends, and other members of the community.

In 1986, Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 made one of the first bequests to Waynflete when she left her home to the school. Today, Cook Hyde House serves as one of three buildings accommodating Waynflete’s Middle School. To honor Ms. Hyde’s generosity and lasting gift to Waynflete, the Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle was formed in 2003 to recognize others who make provisions for Waynflete in their own estate plans.
