Pritchett out at Goldsboro Family YMCA
The organization’s CEO resigned not long after a $2 million land deal — one he said would save the Y from financial ruin — fell through.
Less than a week after Wayne Week reported that a $2 million land deal — one Goldsboro Family YMCA CEO Mark Pritchett said would save the organization from financial ruin — fell through, Pritchett has resigned his post.
And while the Y did not provide details on why he chose to leave, a release published on the organization’s Facebook page said board members were “undertaking the process of determining the leadership plan” — and that they were “excited about this next chapter in our history.”
Earlier this year, Wayne Week published a story that unwrapped the financial crisis inside the decades-old facility — noting that in order to save the flailing organization, leaders had decided to sell a sprawling piece of land donated to the Y by an advocate for children’s health after she lost her battle with cancer.
But the donation, according to her family members who were taken aback by the pending sale, was intended to allow for the construction of a soccer complex — not to “bail out” the Y.
Pritchett, though, told Wayne Week that without the sale, he did not know how the organization would survive.
“On paper, yes,” Pritchett said when asked if the organization would have folded without the land deal. “I don’t think it’s overdramatizing to say that.”
And despite the fact that since the deal fell through, Wayne STEM — as reported in the July 27 edition of the paper — had agreed to lease classroom space from the Y for $8,000 a month, questions about the future financial viability of the organization remain.
There was, according to an earlier interview with Pritchett, still hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay back to board members who floated the organization to avoid its collapse.
And declining membership numbers — and nearly $10 million in facility needs — still loom large.
Whether a new CEO can fix those issues remains to be seen.
Until that person is found, the Y’s Associate Executive Director, Wendy Woodard, will “lead day-to-day operations.”- Ken Fine

We almost didn’t do the
Best of the Boot contest this year.
It wasn’t that we did not want to, or that we did not think it was important to recognize the many wonderful businesses, businessowners, and leaders in this community.
We just thought that maybe the contest’s time had come, that perhaps we needed to move on to something new.
The world moves a whole lot faster these days — and people get tired of things quickly. So, we figured maybe we needed a new idea.
But then we thought about what Best of the Boot means and why it matters.
And we heard from more than a few of you. It turns out we all had the same idea — the small businesses, family or otherwise, are a source of pride for this community.
And more than a few of you want to keep honoring them.
It is not just the fun and interesting places they add to Wayne County.
It is what they give back and the employment they provide.
So, we decided, once again, to give you the chance to say thank you.
Thank you for the fun dinners out with family, a quick lunch with friends, or for the special cake for a family milestone.
Thank you for having just the right gift for our moms or dads or our sons or daughters and our sweethearts.
Thank you for being there in an emergency or when we need a tow or a quick oil change.
Thank you for having the farm supplies or the equipment to till a garden or to raise a few chickens.
Thank you for having just the right medicine to calm a cough or to quell a fever.
Thank you for having just what we need to make our houses homes — or just the right outfit for a trip to the beach.
And, most importantly, thank you for taking a chance on our community.
You see, Wayne County was built on the hard work of a whole bunch of people who had to just, well, leap.
There was no guarantee that their little storefront or brand new shingle offering their services would end in enough money to keep the lights on — or to provide for their families.
And despite what most people think, many of those who swallow hard and start a business have put in hours and hours of both work and wondering what the future will bring long before they became a success.
We don’t always see that hard work that hides behind some of the most successful businesses in the community.
We weren’t there when the future was not all that certain.
And when they finally make it, many people don’t realize what it took to get there — the long nights of staring at the books and wondering how the bills will be covered and how the ends will meet.
They don’t realize the gumption it takes to start, to sustain, and to make it through the tough times.
{ VOTING BEGINS NEXT PAGE }
are also leaders in the community.
Their families carry on the traditions in the names of the patriarchs who built them.
It is their duty, they say, and their honor.
So, we think we should be grateful to those who have stuck it out, who have continued to make Wayne County their home and to serve their fellow citizens.
They proudly work to keep the family tradition alive where others have sold out long ago. They are to be admired.
Then there are the newcomers.
Call them the next generation.
Some of them are young people just putting their toes in the water, while others are older people looking for their next act.
They are still in the beginning stages, when
We should be grateful to those who have stuck it out, who have continued to make Wayne County their home and to serve their fellow citizens.
Entrepreneurs take that chance every day.
They put their trust and faith in their ideas and their talents.
And then, they ask the community to trust them.
We have a lot of just those types of workers in this community.
Some of them are continuing a dream that began decades ago — as the next generation carries on the family enterprise that started with a grandfather or even a great-grandfather.
We have a whole lot of them here — names that we have known all our lives, and stores and firms that have served this community for generations.
They have earned our loyalty and our trust.
You know them, and some of you are now doing business with the sons and daughters of the fathers and mothers of the grandfathers and grandmothers who first put out that “open” sign.
Those businesses are a big part of our history, and many of those business leaders
the future seems bright but unsure.
They are relying on us to provide them the word of mouth and the exposure they need to make their little dream into a thriving enterprise.
They are a big part of our community, too because they are the future.
Wayne County is full of people who grew up understanding that nothing comes easy — that hard work is how you make it.
We are a community of boot straps and integrity, where a handshake means something, and so, too, does loyalty.
Best of the Boot is our chance to honor those who have helped us build it — and to the businesses that not only give us the chance to enjoy what our county has to offer, but that keep our friends, neighbors and family members employed.
Small businesses are a huge part of any economy, and they are very important here.
But money and goods and services are not all small businesses contribute.
When you attend a charitable event or watch a child play in sports, many of the sponsors’ lists include the names of those same enterprises.
You see, our small and family-owned businesses contribute to many of the good causes and good works right here.
And whether it is a monetary gift or an in-kind service, many local charities and youth organizations could not make it without them.
So, now you know why we decided that we could not go without a Best of the Boot contest this year.
This week’s edition includes all you need to know to take part in the fun.
Simply put a check mark by your favorite in each category — or write in one for the categories that require it — and send it to our office.
We will take it from there.
From coffee to car care and furniture to builders, we have all sorts of ways to honor the businesses that are a part of your life.
If you like a certain pizza, make sure you check the box.
And if your favorite spot to celebrate with a family dinner or the best steak in town is on the list, make sure you record your vote.
There will be some pretty tough competition — especially when it comes to where to find the best barbecue.
And there will be a whole lot of people who have an opinion on who has the best.
In our view, that's part of the fun.
Some special categories for professionals who have made a real difference are on the ballot, too.
So, if there is a teacher, a doctor, a nurse, or even a lawyer or a minister who has made a difference in your life and in this community, don’t forget to write them in.
Because when the voting is all over, we will proudly share the winners — as well as the Top 3 in each category — in a special magazine they can keep forever.
Every year, they tell us it is an honor to be thought of and to be considered among the best.
It makes them proud to know that all of you thought enough of them to put their names down on a piece of paper.
It might even make the hard work, the bills, and the sleepless nights worth it.
And not to worry. We will return to our regular content next week. As usual, there is a whole lot to talk about.
But for now, let’s get about supporting our local economy and those heroes who work hard every day to make it possible.
We hope you look forward to the opportunity to highlight our incredible home as much as we do.
If you have been with Wayne Week since the beginning — or signed up within our first few weeks — you are nearing the end of your 1-year subscription period.
