PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you!

As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience.

During the 2015-16 academic year, President Douglas G. Lee 100 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls.

That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg.

Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

Waynesburg provides a courtesy line for radio stations wishing to broadcast a game from Marisa Fieldhouse. The availability for the radio line is apportioned by order of request.

Players Media members are invited to attend Waynesburg volleyball practice sessions.

Players are available for interviews after each practice, as their schedule permits.

Post-match player interviews are conducted along the Waynesburg bench at the conclusion of a brief team meeting.

Credentials All media attending Waynesburg volleyball matches are requested to notify the Sports Information Office. Credentials for home matches are issued for working media only and should be requested as early as possible.

• Requests for credentials should be submitted at least 24 hours prior to home matches and directed to SID Bobby Fox through e-mail.

• Waynesburg reserves the right to dismiss a media member to ensure a working press row.

• Requests are honored from sports editors and writers of daily and weekly newspapers, sports directors of radio and television stations of both Waynesburg and the opposing team.

DIG PINK While getting back to the top of the conference mountain is the main goal of any team in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference every year, the Waynesburg University volleyball team has also made it a point to take on an even more important and devastating opponent.

“Westminster, Bethany and Grove City have done it for a while now,” Benkowski said.

“I just thought it would be a really good cause.”

This year, the Yellow Jackets will host Grove City on Thursday, Oct. 13, for its Dig Pink game. All funds raised at the event will go towards the very worthy cause.

Over recent seasons, the Yellow Jackets have become active in raising money for breast cancer research and prevention.

“I’m just really excited that we have the opportunity to spread the word about the research concerning breast cancer,” said Waynesburg University head volleyball coach Stephanie Benkowski.

Side-Out supports teams nationwide in their volleyball tournaments, clinics and other fundraising efforts. The foundation offers practical support for fundraising in addition to educational material for participants in order to help them become effective advocates for breast cancer. It contributes the funds to organizations that serve breast cancer patients, whether it be in the form of research, medical services or compassionate support.

Teams will typically wear pink tee shirts or uniforms at the event, use pink volleyballs for play and sell various items at their respective gymnasiums to support breast cancer research. This is Waynesburg’s fourth year with the Dig Pink program. However, the Jackets have been raising money for cancer research since 2008. That year, Benkowski was inspired by some of her PAC opponents to get involved with the program.

2016 SEASON OUTLOOK The Waynesburg University women’s volleyball team said good bye to three veteran stalwarts at the end of a 2016 season that saw the Yellow Jackets go 4-26 overall and 4-14 in the Presidents’ Athletics Conference (PAC). Though the win total may not have been what 12th-year head coach Stephanie Benkowski had envisioned, the 30-match schedule allowed several members of last year’s freshman class to gain valuable experience.

Benkowski is banking on that experience to lead to more victories this fall.

MIDDLE HITTERS Senior Rachel Lang is expected to log her third-straight season as a major contributor near the net for the Yellow Jackets. Lang is coming off a year that saw her finish fourth on the team in kills per set (1.27). She also sported one of the highest hitting percentages on the squad. The Pittsburgh native was also active on the defensive side of the court, finishing in a tie for first place on the team in total blocks (29).

Sophomore Sydni Ayers made a major impact on the Jackets as a freshman and was among the PAC leaders in assists.

Waldman finished third on the team in both total kills (167) and kills per set (1.70) over 98 sets played. Waldman also showed an ability to play defense at the net with 24 total blocks.

Sophomore Kasey Kennedy brings good height to the position (5-10) and will look to provide support near the net.

First-year senior Carolena Gasbarro is expected to join the roster after spending time with the Yellow Jacket women’s basketball team. Freshmen Katie Allison and Sydney Prugh, a pair of WPIAL products from Albert Gallatin and West Shamokin high schools, respectively, will push the incumbents for playing time.

Junior Casey Hall and sophomore Casey Hall are both back to add depth to the position. Sophomore Jordyn Wyllie, who saw time with the Waynesburg women’s basketball team after transferring at last year’s semester break, will also be in the running for court time. Standing 5-11, she is not only the tallest player at the position, but one of the tallest players on the team.

OUTSIDE HITTERS Graduating senior Kourtney Skinner, a former all-PAC honoree, will be hard to replace.

However, sophomore Lexy Waldman is coming off a solid freshman year and looks to be the team’s top player at the position.

inside track on the job after appearing in 85 sets over 25 matches. Her 1.32 digs per set average is also best amongst the trio.

If there is one position Waynesburg shouldn’t have to worry about it when it comes to production, it’s the setter spot.

Sophomore Sydni Ayers made an immediate impact on the Orange and Black, as well as the PAC, by being named Corvias ECAC Division III South Region Rookie of the Week. Ayers ended the year ranked third in the conference in assists per set (6.77) and first on the team in total service aces (32) and aces per set (0.31).

The Manhattan, Montana, native also leads all returners in digs per set (2.39).

Freshman Alyssa Proper, a Titusville, Pennsylvania, native, adds further depth to the group.

RIGHT SIDE Senior Shannon Morgan is one of Waynesburg’s top players and leaders heading into her final year with the Yellow Jackets.

The Waynesburg native leads all returners in kills per set (2.04), total kills (210) and total blocks (29). She saw plenty of court time, appearing in 103 sets.

Junior Delaney Denniston finished second on the team in assists per set (2.00) in 2015 and led the squad in the same category during her freshman year of 2014.

Junior Kara Sappa and sophomore Casey Hall appear to be the only veterans returning to fill out the depth chart at the position. However, several other players, both returners and newcomers, could also share time at the spot.

LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST Like outside hitter, the defensive specialist spot will have plenty of competitors for the starting job. Whoever takes over the position will have big shoes to fill with the graduation of three-time All-PAC selection Jessica Dorazio.

Waynesburg opens the 2016 season on Friday, Sept. 2, when the Jackets begin their two-day stay at the Anderson (Indiana) University.

STEPHANIE BENKOWSKI

COACHING EXPERIENCE WAYNESBURG - 2005-present Head Coach POINT PARK - 2001-2004 Head Coach

Head coach Stephanie Benkowski begins her 13th season at the helm of the Waynesburg volleyball program in 2016.

Over the past decade-plus, Benkowski has seen 14 players reach All-PAC status, earned PAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and has seen numerous student-athletes earn academic honors.

Waynesburg last made it to the postseason following the 2008 campaign. That year, the Jackets earned an 11-20 overall record and a 6-8 mark in PAC action. As the fifth seed in the tourney, Waynesburg picked up a 3-1 upset victory over number-four Thiel on the Tomcats’ home court.

It was the first win in the conference tourney for Waynesburg since 2005. The Jackets then went on and played well against the eventual champs from Westminster during a 3-1 loss.

Individually, Benkowski enjoyed a first for her time at Waynesburg as senior outside hitter Laurie Lindner was named PAC Player of the Year following the 2008 campaign. It was the first time Benkowski had coached a player to the prestigious honor. Lindner joined three of her teammates on the 2008 All-PAC squad.

After a rough start to her first season (2005) at Waynesburg that had the team four games below .500, Benkowski guided the Yellow Jackets to 13-consecutive victories.

Waynesburg went on to finish the season at 21-13 overall with an 11-1 mark in conference play and an appearance in the PAC Championship match. For her efforts, Benkowski earned PAC Coach of the Year accolades.

The Waynesburg volleyball team has also consistently held a strong presence on the annual Fall PAC Academic Honor Roll and 2010 was no different. The Jacket volleyball team featured five players on the list.

A 2001 graduate of Saint Vincent, Benkowski has also experienced much success as a player. While at Saint Vincent, she was a member of teams that compiled a record 90-46 and made three playoff appearances in four years. She received second-team all-conference accolades in each of her last two seasons with the Bearcats.

In addition to starting on the volleyball team at Saint Vincent, Benkowski played four years in the outfield for the Bearcat softball team.

Following her playing career, Benkowski was named the head coach at Point Park. While coaching the Pioneers for four seasons, she coached six players that earned recognition from the conference.

In addition to her coaching duties at Point Park, Benkowski served as Associate Athletic Director and earned her master’s degree in Business Administration.

She resides in Baden, Pa. with her husband Jason and their daughters Katarynia and Nadia.

SARA BRUSCHI

Sara Bruschi arrived at Waynesburg in 2014 with a deep pool of coaching experience from both the high school and college ranks. She most recently served as the head coach at Uniontown High School this past fall.

During her one and only season with the Red Raiders, Bruschi led her squad to a 10-0 undefeated section record and a spot in the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs.

Her high school experience also included three years as the head coach at one of Uniontown’s biggest rivals, Connellsville High School. Bruschi coached the Falcons from 2008 to 2010 and led the Blue and White to the WPIAL playoffs during her first year on the job.

In between her stays at the two Fayette County high schools, Bruschi returned to her alma mater of Saint Vincent College to spend the 2012 campaign as a volunteer assistant with the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC)-rival Bearcats.

Prior to her time on the bench, she wore the green and gold of SVC from 2002-to-2005. During Bruschi’s senior season (2005), the Bearcats won a conference title and the standout middle hitter served as a team captain.

She also ranked in the NAIA top 15 rankings for blocks as both a junior and senior.

Bruschi graduated from Saint Vincent in 2006 with a degree in English/Communications Education. She played her high school ball at Connellsville, which she graduated from in 2002 and earned All-Fayette County laurels while excelling with the Falcons.

Bruschi resides in Connellsville with her husband Josh.

She also teaches eighth grade English at Connellsville Junior High School.

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence.

The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration.

Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise.

Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy.

The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007.

In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season.

The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.

In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015.

The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2015-16 trophies.

Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 939 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

Waynesburg University is a small, private, comprehensive Christian university located in southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. Founded by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), the University inspires students to pursue lives of purpose through faith, learning and serving.

Waynesburg University is a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).
