PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you!

As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience.

During the 2014-15 academic year, 110 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall President Douglas G. Lee and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg.

Also this year, the Yellow jacket men were awarded the PAC All-Sports Trophy for the first time in University history. PAC All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually to the schools that perform the best across the board in league competition.

Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

COACHING STAFF Laura Heethuis, a United States Soccer Federation National D Licensed Soccer Coach, comes to Waynesburg after holding two volunteer assistant positions in the Division I ranks at the University of Miami and, most recently, her alma mater, Michigan State University.

She serves as the Waynesburg women’s head coach and the men’s assistant coach.

She also took home “Freshman of the Year” honors on both regional and national levels.

Laura was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology specializing in health promotions, and garnered recognition for her academic excellence on multiple occasions. She was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a first-team member of the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American Team.

As a student-athlete at MSU from 2008 to 2011, Laura earned a number of Big Ten and national accolades including being a four-time first-team all-conference award winner, a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas All-American, a four-time NSCAA/Adidas

She was drafted 19th overall in the 2012 Women’s Professional Soccer League draft by Sky Blue FC, which is based in Morristown, New Jersey. That same year, she won the WPSL Elite championship with the Western New York Flash. Later, she was drafted 18th overall by Seattle Reign FC in the 2013 National Women’s Soccer Supplemental Draft.

Brad Heethuis begins his third year at Waynesburg after serving as an assistant coach with the Calvin College (Michigan) men’s soccer team. He was also an assistant girls soccer coach at Unity Christian High School in Hudsonville, Michigan.

The native of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, was also twice featured on the PAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Cross is a native of McKean, Pa. and a graduate of General McLane High School. He is married to his wife Michelle, who is an assistant track and cross country coach at Waynesburg.

Morgan comes to Waynesburg following a year in which he served as Athletic Director at his alma mater, Grace Academy in Hagerstown, Maryland. Since 2015, he has served as head boys soccer coach at Grace Academy and spent time as a physical education instructor at the middle and high school levels.

He also has experience as an area representative and co-camp director for three years with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Morgan earned his associate’s degree in health, physical education and leisure studies from Hagerstown Community College and his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Sports Management from Waynesburg in 2014. He also currently holds a USSF E license.

He is married to his wife, Kimber, who is also a Waynesburg graduate (‘14).

After spending two years as a member of the Yellow Jacket men’s soccer team, Zack Morgan has returned to Waynesburg as an assistant coach with both the men and women.

Heethuis was a member of four Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Association champion teams and played in the 2009 and 2011 Division III national championship games. His individual accolades include being named MIAA Conference Player of the Week and a member of the MIAA all-conference teams in 2010. The following year, he was lauded as a collegesoccer360.com Primetime Performer.

NIGHT OF NETS First the first time at Waynesburg University, the Yellow Jacket women’s volleyball team will be hosting a “Night of Nets” on September 14 against Washington and Jefferson.

The effort of the event is to raise money for families in Africa to buy nets to protect themselves from deadly mosquito bites that contain malaria.

People become aware of what’s happening in our world and get to respond to real physical needs in a way that offers hope and a future.

Joining the fight is the Waynesburg University soccer teams, who will be hosting their own “Night of Nets” on September 15 and 16. According to the Night of Nets’ web site, it has been discovered that the bite of a mosquito is one of the deadliest actions in our world, still taking the life of a child every 2 minutes in Africa. One of the best solutions to stopping the danger of malaria comes through sleeping under a bed net that can be purchased for the cost of a typical high school or college game admission fee.

Sports become more than just a game. Bed nets are received with incredible gratitude and celebration as lifetime connections and relationships are built between two communities on opposite sides of the world. These events bring unity to the campus and often set up a model where athletic teams and other groups on campus regularly seek to use their resources to help other people in need.

How it works is that it uses a regularly scheduled athletic event to focus on and respond to the issue of malaria. Most schools recruit a group or committee of people to help with driving and executing the event. This group

2017 WOMEN’S PREVIEW After only losing two players to graduation, head coach Laura Heethuis looks to build on the experience of the six seniors coming into the 2017 season. Last year Waynesburg posted a 5-11-2 record with a PAC record of 2-6-1.

Senior Nikki Davis returns as one of the leading goal scores from last year. The Ligonier Valley, Pennsylvania, native totaled four goals and nine points for the Yellow Jackets. This year she will be reunited with fellow senior Melanie Byler, who missed all of conference play last season due to a knee injury.

In Byler’s sophomore campaign, she led the team in goals (8) and points (18).

In the midfield, Natalie Fortna returns for her junior season. Fortna finished tied with Davis for goals and points.

She led the team with two game winning goals and she is looked to do the same as the most experienced at midfield with the graduation of Lauren Drane.

As Melanie Burchfield graduated in the spring, the Yellow Jackets look to seniors Sam Nichols and Sara Hackman as the leaders of the defense.

Nichols started every match last season and totaled three goals and six points. Hackman started in 15 of her 17 appearances last season.

Guarding the net behind the defense, sophomore Courtney Syfert returns to build on her incredible first year as Waynesburg’s primary keeper. Last year, she posted 2.16 goals against average with .742 save percentage.

Senior Heather Fraser will be the primary backup. She logged 197:57 minutes last season. Fraser appeared four times with a save percentage of .667 and goals against of 2.27.

Waynesburg opens the 2017 season on a two-day road trip out east with the first match against Juniata on Friday, Sept. 1. The very next day, the Yellow Jackets will face Penn State Altoona. The team will return home for a six-match home stand starting with Marietta on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Last year, Heethuis had five freshmen at midfield joining Drane and Fortna.

All five return for their second season as Yellow Jackets. Brittany Woodcock, Christina Golonka and Emma Goz-

zard saw the most time out of last year’s freshmen at the position.

PAC OVERVIEW The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence.

The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration.

Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise.

Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy.

The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007.

In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season.

The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.

In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015.

The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Thomas More men and Westminster women captured the 2016-17 trophies.

Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 939 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

2017 MEN’S SEASON PREVIEW Men’s soccer head coach Brad Heethius believes his team can continue to improve such as they did last season when the Yellow Jackets posted an overall record of 4-12-1 and 2-5-1 in PAC play. However, this year the team will be young with one senior and four juniors.

Junior Austin Zurik returns as Waynesburg’s leading goal scorer. Along with Zurik at the forward position, the midfielders played a huge role in the Yellow Jackets attack. Sophomore Justin Buberl looks to continue his performance from his first season. Buberl led the team in points (7) and assists (5).

The midfield lost key contributors in Joey Buchanan, Zack Benedict and Chad Palucka to graduation in the spring.

Along with Buberl, junior Sam Almeter and sophomores Nate Biondi and Nate Kummer return to the midfield.

The defense took a big hit with the graduation of Josh Hennigh. Senior Bryan Sontag, who is the lone senior, will be looked to as the leader of the defense.

Junior James Snyder returns as the goalkeeper for the Yellow Jackets. Last season, Snyder started every match in net posting a .741 save percentage while only allowing an average of 1.68 goals a match.

Waynesburg will open its season on a two-day road trip starting with Juniata on Friday, Sept. 1 and then Penn State Altoona on Saturday, Sept. 2. The team will stay on the road for a Tuesday, Sept.

5 matchup against Franciscan. The Yellow Jackets return home for a five-game home stand starting with Mount Aloysius on Friday, Sept. 15.
