As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience.

During the 2015-16 academic year, 100 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg.

HEAD COACH SAM JONES College Coaching Experience 2003-06 -- Men’s Assistant Coach, Mt. Union 2006-07 -- Women’s Assistant Coach, Mt. Union 2008-Present -- Head Coach, Waynesburg Sam Jones is back for his ninth season as the leader of the Waynesburg women’s basketball team after leading his Yellow Jackets to sixth consecutive winning seasons, with at least 14 wins in each of those year. During the stretch, Jones also led Waynesburg to back-to-back 20-win efforts (2010-11 and 2011-12). In just seven years on the bench, Jones has become the program’s all-time winningest coach, recording his 100th career win in a 69-67 victory at Bethany on February 14, 2015.

The 2013-14 Jackets set a slew of individual and team records, including most points scored in a season (1,993), free throw attempts (598), free throws made (418) and three-pointers made (193). Individually, junior Hayden Giuliani set school records by making 44.6 percent of her three-pointers and sinking 87.5 percent of her free throws. Freshman Courtney Sargent also set a new school mark by converting 62.3 percent of her field goal attempts.

During the 2010-11 season, Jones led his Jackets to a 20-8 overall record, including a 14-4 mark in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play and a slew of memorable moments. The Jackets secured not one, but two signature wins over 2011 NCAA qualifier Saint Vincent during the regular season. The first of those two victories came during a season-best nine-game winning streak. For the second-straight year, Waynesburg scored an opening-round victory in the postseason conference tournament and then came two points shy of advancing to the PAC title game.

For his efforts, Jones earned his first PAC Coach of the Year award and was joined three of his top players on the all-conference teams.

Senior point guard Hannah Hunter led the way with a first-team nod, while junior guards Jessi Drayer and Brittany Spencer earned secondteam and honorable mention nods, respectively. Hunter finished her senior campaign as Waynesburg’s all-time leader in assists per game (5.3) and steals per game (2.9), while finishing second on the team in scoring (13.5 ppg). She also set the school record for career assists and surpassed the 1,000-career point mark.

The 2010-11 campaign saw the Jackets enjoy a 21-9 overall record, the program’s best since 1994-95. The program also captured its first PAC tournament win since 2005-06, and capped the year by winning the school’s first ECAC South title as the top seed and host team.

During the 2008-09 season, his first as the leader of the Waynesburg women’s basketball team, Jones brought some national attention to the Yellow Jackets as he guided them to one of the biggest one-year turnarounds in all of Division III. Jones led the young team to an 8-18 season, a seven-win improvement from their 1-25 effort in 2007.

Jones came to the Yellow Jackets from the University of Mount Union, where he spent a total of four years as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s programs. While he only spent one year as the head assistant with the women’s program in 2006-2007, Jones was part of a Purple Raiders’ team that upset a pair of nationally-ranked opponents.

Before his work with the women’s team, Jones spent three years (2003-2006) with the Mount Union men. During that span, Jones helped develop five All-Ohio Athletic Conference selections and a pair of 1,000-point scorers.

Jones started his basketball coaching career in 1995 at Grenville Christian College, a high-school level institution located in Brockville, Ontario, approximately 70 miles south of Ottawa. He served the next five years as head junior varsity boys’ basketball coach before accepting the varsity coaching job in 2000. One year earlier, Jones also assumed the head coaching job of the varsity girls’ basketball team at the school.

In addition to his basketball duties at Grenville Christian, Jones coached men’s volleyball and track & field while serving as an assistant athletic director and physical education teacher.

Jones earned his Masters of Business Administration degree from Waynesburg after graduating from the University of Mount Union with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and minors in education and exercise science.

Jones is also entering his third season as Waynesburg’s head men’s and women’s head golf coach. He currently resides just south of Washington, Pa. with his wife Ruth-Ann and children Hannah, Lucas, Rebekah and Nathan.

KEVIN PUSATERI

Assistant Coach

After graduating from Waynesburg University in 1989, Pusateri was active in the sport of basketball in a variety of ways. He has spent time as the head coach and athletic director at Wesley Academy in Pittsburgh, and has been an assistant coach at Trinity and McGuffey high schools in nearby Washington County.

Along with his 10 years of work as a high school coach, Pusateri also serves as a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association

(PIAA) official.

Following his graduation from Waynesburg, Pusateri added a degree from California University of Pa. He is a 1985 graduate of Burgettstown High School, where he was a standout hoopster for the Blue Devils.

Pusateri is employed as a special education teacher for Intermediate Unit One. He is married to his wife Michelle, who is a 1990 Waynesburg graduate, and they have a daughter Samantha and a son Joshua.

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence.

The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration.

Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise.

Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy.

The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007.

In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season.

The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.

In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015.

The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2015-16 trophies.

Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 939 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

UNIVERSITY PROFILE Chapel. Completed in 2011, the chapel seats around 600 individuals and has become the centerpiece of the Waynesburg University landscape.

Founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Waynesburg University is located on a traditional campus in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, with three adult centers located in the Pittsburgh region.
