As the governing body of Wayne Presbyterian Church, we are writing at the request and in support of Bread for the World, our longstanding mission partner, to urge Congress to re-instate life-saving commitments to USAID. On March 10, 2025, Secretary of State Rubio announced the official cancellation of 83% of the programs at USAID. This decision will have devastating consequences for some of the most vulnerable people on earth, people that our Christian faith compels us to feed and care for.
As the Rev. Eugene Cho, President and CEO of Bread for the World has stated, “Right now … more than 45 million children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, which is immediately endangering their lives. Without the assistance the U.S. had been providing, millions of people –especially children – will likely die. International aid is less than 1 percent of the U.S. federal budget, but its impact is outsized in terms of saving lives and improving U.S. national security. These strategic investments make America stronger, safer, and more prosperous.”
In a case questioning the constitutionality of the dismantling of the USAID, U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang recently said that it is likely that USAID is no longer capable of performing some of its statutorily required functions. “Taken together, these facts support the conclusion that USAID has been effectively eliminated”, Chuang wrote in the preliminary injunction.
As Christians who love God and love our country, we cannot remain silent while abrupt dismantling of congressionally funded aid programs increases suffering and death among some of God’s most vulnerable people.
We respectfully but forcefully urge you to raise your voice to protect our neighbors around the world.
Respectfully,
The Session of Wayne Presbyterian Church
