Sixteenth Sunday of

Prelude | John Grecia, organ

Meditation Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911)

Words of Welcome

+ Call to Worship

Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy burdened.”

Jesus says, “I will give you rest.”

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.”

“For I am gentle and humble in heart.”

Our Lord promises, “You will find rest for your souls.”

Let us worship Jesus Christ, the risen one who lives among us!

+ Hymn 41: LYONS O Worship the King, All Glorious Above!

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession + Please stand as you are able.

Jesus, friend of sinners, your words to your disciples were plain: whatever we do for the least of these, we do for you. But have we fed hungry, welcomed the stranger, and shown love and care to those in our midst who need it most? Help us, oh God. For we have become confused and misguided. Forgive us and guide us toward your path of justice and peace. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

+ Response of Praise: Hymn 581 GLORIA PATRI

+ Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

Presentation of the Susan Hall Galloway Scholars | Please see insert.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading | John 13: 1-11

+ Hymn 203: CHEREPONI Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love

Scripture Reading | John 13:31-38

Quartet Anthem | Howard Helvey (b. 1968) Lead, Kindly Light

Lead, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, Lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home; Lead Thou me on! Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see the distant scene; one step enough for me. I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on; I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead Thou me on! I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears, pride ruled my will. Remember not past years! Meantime, along the narrow rugged path, Thyself hast trod, Lead, Savior, lead me home in childlike faith, home to my God. To rest forever after earthly strife, in the calm light of everlasting life. Amen. – John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

Sermon | Rev. Katy Shevel | Jesus & Friends Mini-Series: “Jesus and Peter”

Time for Reflection

Affirmation of Faith | The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SUSAN HALL GALLOWAY SCHOLARSHIP

The Susan Hall Galloway Scholarship was established by a Wayne Presbyterian Church member in 2009 to benefit high-achieving students at Cornerstone Christian Academy. Since its inception this donor-advised fund has provided full tuition for 42 students, including the two students being recognized this morning. The scholarships are awarded to middle school students who excel academically, are leaders among their peers, and have a verified financial need.

Susan Hall Galloway was the wife of former Senior Pastor, John Galloway, Jr. She was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, and attended Myers Park High School before going on to be a Religion major at Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia. Susan then made her way to Princeton Seminery, where she not only earned her Masters Degree in Religious Education, but also met John Galloway.

BROOKLYN GARDNER-KILLEBREW 5TH GRADE | CLASS OF 2028

In her own words: "I’m proud to be a student at Cornerstone because we get to learn more about God every day. Before, I only really learned about God on Sundays at church or at home with my parents. Now, I can also learn Monday through Friday at school. I would not have learned so much about Jesus if it wasn’t for (Christian Concepts Teacher) Mr. Dontae and (4th Grade Teacher) Ms. Malone." "My future plans are to stay at Cornerstone and graduate after 8th grade. I don’t know my plans for high school but I would like to go to Villanova for college. God hasn’t revealed to me my passion for what I want to do in the future."

LAILA STOTTS 8TH GRADE | CLASS OF 2025

Laila was the grateful Galloway Scholarship recipient in 2023. As an incoming 8th grader and Class of 2025 graduate she is active on campus in several extracurricular clubs and programs. She is entering her second year as a Student Ambassador, where she helps to facilitate campus tours. She is also a member of the Cornerstone VIP Choir, and as a singer and actress, has had a prominent role in our Christmas Program and J-ROCK Summer Camp performances.
