Nineteenth Sunday of

+ Please stand as you are able.

Prelude | John Grecia, organ

Prélude du Cinquième Ton Nicolas Gigault (1627-1707)

Words of Welcome

Moment for Mission | Amanda Bryant, Program Director of Gemma Services

+ Call to Worship

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all they do they prosper. Let us worship God together.

+ Hymn 330:

OLD 124th Our Help is In the Name of God

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, your call to discipleship is demanding. You call us to reorder our lives by the values of the kingdom you are bringing in Jesus Christ. Yet we still pass by the ones you notice: people who are poor and hungry; people who weep. We have not stood with those who are hated, bullied, and excluded. Comfortable with the way things are, we are too complacent, even complicit with injustice and prejudice. Forgive us, O God, and turn us back to your gospel, so that we might live as your people and share your love and grace with the world. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

Hear the Good News!

Who is in a position to condemn? Only Jesus Christ. And Jesus died for us, rose for us, reigns in power for us, and prays for us. Know that in Jesus Christ you are forgiven, and be at peace. Thanks be to God.

+

+ Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading | Psalm 103:6-14

+ Hymn 773: HEAVEN SHALL NOT WAIT Heaven Shall Not Wait

Scripture Reading | Luke 5:27-32

Anthem | Quartet Aaron Copland (1900-1990)

Thou, O Jehovah, Abideth Forever

Thou, O Jehovah, abideth forever. God reineth over all men and nations. His throne doth last and doth guide all the ages. Wherefor willst Thou forsake us ever? When then willst Thou forget us never? Thou, O Jehovah, abideth forever, and all the length of our days will ever be our Savior.

Sermon | Rev. Ryan Balsan | “Good News: You’re Worse Than You Thought!”

Time for Reflection

+ Affirmation of Faith | from A Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of

+ Affirmation of Faith | continued from previous page peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”
