Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us. Let us worship God!

+ Hymn 825: SWING LOW Swing Low , Sweet Chariot

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. We confess that we are indifferent to your will. You call us to proclaim your name, but we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live faithfully, but we are afraid. In your mercy, forgive us. Give us courage to follow in your way, that joined with those from ages past, who have served you with faith, hope, and love, we may inherit the kingdom you promised in Jesus Christ. Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

+ Response of Praise: Hymn 581

Time for Reflection

+ Affirmation of Faith | The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

“Words for My Father” from Slow Pilgrim by Scott Cairns

And this is the consolation—that the world doesn't end, that the world one day opens up into something better, and that we one day open up into something far better. Maybe like this: one morning you finally wake to a light you recognize as the light you ' ve wanted every morning that has come before. And the air itself has some light thing in it that you ' ve always hoped the air might have. And one is there to welcome you whose face you ' ve looked for during all the best and worst times of your life. He takes you to himself and holds you close until you fully wake. And it seems you ' ve only just awakened, but you turn and there we are, the rest of us, arriving just behind you. We'll go the rest of the way together.

When the Saints Go Marching In

Trad. American Hymn/Arr. John Rutter (b. 1945)

Glory, glory, hallelujah! The Lord goes marching on. Oh , when the saints go marching in , oh , Lord , I want to be in that number , when the saints go marching in. And when the revelation comes , oh , Lord , I want to be in that number , when the revelation comes. Oh , when the new world is revealed , oh , Lord , I want to be in that number , when the new world is revealed. Oh , when they gather ‘round the throne , oh , lord , I want to be in that number , when they gather ‘round the throne. Hallelujah, brothers , hallelujah, sisters! Hear the music going ‘round and a round , while the saints go marching up into glory, oh , hear those angel trumpets sound! And when they crown him King of Kings, oh , Lord , I want to be in that number , when they crown him King of Kings. And when the sun no more will shine , oh , Lord , I want to be in that number , when the sun no more will shine. And when the moon has turned to blood , oh , Lord , I want to be in that number , when the moon has turned to blood. And on that hallelujah day, oh , Lord , I want to be in that number on that hallelujah day.

God of mercy, our nation is in a time of great transition. With all of the injustice and fear in our world today, we ask you to inspire us and guide us as we participate in the upcoming presidential elections. We seek a government that upholds and protects human rights and justice for all its citizens, regardless of race, class, gender, or religion. Move and inspire us by your presence among us in the most vulnerable in our society. For their tears are your tears, their pain is your pain, their suffering is your suffering. In gratitude for the right to vote, we pray.
