+ Please stand as you are able.

First Sunday in Lent

Prelude | 9:30AM Selah Bell Choir | 11AM Te Deum Bell Choir | Ryan Fleming, Director

Sandra Eithun Take It to the Lord in Prayer

+ Call to Worship

Oh Lord, open my lips. And my mouth shall proclaim your praise. Your Word is a lamp unto my feet. And a light unto my path. Your Word is my heritage forever; And the joy of my heart.

+ Hymn 167: AUS DER TIEFE RUFE ICH Forty Days and Forty Nights

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

Holy God, you call for us to bring our burdens to you, to lay bare the confessions of our hearts. We confess that we are distracted and weary; angry and resentful; jealous and bitter. We are drawn into arguments with our friends and neighbors. We are tempted by greed and promises of power. We ignore those who cry out in pain and call for justice; our hearts are calloused by indifference. We have been hurt in the past when we have tried to help others. We are afraid to extend our hands outward for fear of getting hurt again. Forgive us for what we have done and left undone, Lord. Heal our broken hearts. Give us the courage to instruments of your peace once more. Help us never to forget your love for us and for all your children in our midst. In the precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness In Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

+ Response of Praise: What Wondrous Love is This (Verse 1)

+ Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

My Spirit Longs for Thee

Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) Arrangement: Arnold Sherman (b. 1948)

My Spirit longs for thee within my troubled breast , though I unworthy be of so divine a guest. Of so divine a guest, unworthy though I be , yet has my heart no rest unless it come from thee. Unless it come from thee , in vain , I look around , in all that I can see , no rest is to be found. No rest is to be found but in thy blessed love. O let my wish be crowned and send it from above.

Sermon | The Rev. Katy Shevel | “Shield the Joyous”

Time for Reflection

Simon Lole (b. 1957)

Affirmation of Faith | The Confession of 1967 (Part 9.08)

In Jesus of Nazareth, true humanity was realized once for all. Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, lived among his own people and s hared their needs, temptations, joys, and sorrows. He expressed the love of God in word and deed and became a brother to all kinds of sinful men and women.5 But his complete obedience led him into conflict with his people. His life and teaching judged their goodness, religious aspirations, and national hopes. Many rejected him and demanded his death. In giving himself freely for them, he took upon himself the judgment under which everyone stands6 convicted. God raised him from the dead, vindicating him as Messiah and Lord. The victim of sin became victor, and won the victory over sin and death for all.
