ORDER OF WORSHIP

The Baptism of the Lord

+ Please stand as you are able.

Prelude | John Grecia, organ Baptism of the Lord Malcolm McKelvey (1927-2006)

+ Call to Worship

Do not fear, for the Lord has spoken: I have called you by name; you are mine. Let us worship the Lord together.

+ Hymn 375: HANSON PLACE Shall We Gather at the River

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

In baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, making us part of the body of Christ. We confess that we remain preoccupied with ourselves, separated from one another. We cling to destructive habits, hold grudges, and show reluctance to welcome one another. We allow the past to hold us captive.

In your loving kindness, have mercy on us and free us from sin. Fulfill the promises of our baptism so that we may rise to new life and live together in grace. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

Know that in the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

+ Response of Praise: Christ is the World’s True Light ST. JOAN

+ Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

O Come , Everyone That Thirsteth (from Elijah)

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

O come everyone that thirsteth , O come to the waters: O come unto Him. O hear , and your souls shall live for ever.

Sermon | The Rev. Ryan Balsan | “Words and Deeds”

Time for Reflection

Affirmation of Faith | The Confession of 1967 | continued on next page Wherever the church exists, its members are both gathered in corporate life and dispersed in society for the sake of mission in the world.

The church gathers to praise God, to hear God’s word for humankind, to baptize and to join in the Lord’s Supper, to pray for and present the world to God in worship, to enjoy fellowship, to receive instruction, strength, and comfort, to order and organize its own corporate life, to be tested, renewed and reformed, and to speak and act in the world’s affairs as may be appropriate to the needs of the time. The church disperses to serve God wherever its members are, at work or

play, in private or in the life of society. Their prayer and Bible study are part of the church’s worship and theological reflection. Their witness is the church’s evangelism. Their daily action in the world is the church in mission to the world. The quality of their relation with other persons is the measure of the church’s fidelity.

Lord of the Dance 19th Century Shaker Tune

Adapted by Sydney Carter/Arr. by Don Hart (b. 1951)

I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun , and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth. At Bethlehem I had my birth. I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee , but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me; I danced for the fishermen , for James and John; they came to me and the dance went on. Dance , then , wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance , said he. And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be , and I’ll lead you all in the dance , said he. I danced on the Sabbath when I cured the lame , the holy people said it was a shame; they whipped and they stripped and they hung me high; and they left me there on a cross to die. I danced on a Friday and the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back; they buried my body and they thought I’d gone, but I am the dance and I still go on. They cut me down and I leapt up high, I am the life that’ll never , never die; I’ll live in you if you live in me; I am the Lord of the Dance , said he.
