Fourth Sunday of Epiphany

+ Please stand as you are able.

Adoration Florence Price (1887-1953)

+ Call to Worship | Psalm 15

Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? Who may abide on your holy hill? Those who lead a blameless life and do what is right, who speak the truth from their heart; they do not slander with the tongue, they do no evil to their friends; they do not cast discredit upon a neighbor. In their sight the wicked are rejected, but they honor those who fear the Lord, They have sworn upon their health and do not take back their word. They do not give their money in hope of gain. Nor do they take bribes against the innocent. Those who do these things shall never be overthrown.

+ Hymn 372: AZMON O for a World

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment.

Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world, Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

Do not fear, says the Lord, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.

God is doing a new thing; now it springs forth! By the grace of Jesus Christ , we are forgiven! Thanks be to God.

+ Response of Praise

+ Passing of the Peace

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Words of Welcome & Announcements

Musical Offering | Children’s Choir | Ryan Fleming, Director

Not One Kevin and Janine Stokes

Not one is far from the shepherd. Not one is out of his flock. Not one is left out to wander - not one, not one. A hundred sheep were grazing when the shepherd looked away, but it wasn’t long before he saw that one had gone astray. The shepherd left the ninety-nine and brought the lost sheep home, knowing that he couldn’t leave it out there all alone. Jesus loves his children, no matter how big or small. He keeps his watch on everyone – a shepherd to us all.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading | Isaiah 30:8-14

+ Hymn 724:

ANGEL’S STORY O Jesus, I Have Promised

Scripture Reading | Revelation 3:1-6

Anthem | Quartet + Choral Scholars | Josef Samargia, bass

I Want to Be Ready

Trad. African American Spiritual Setting: Moses Hogan (1957-2003)

I want to be ready, I want to be ready, I want to be ready to walk in Jerusalem just like John. O John, O John, what do you say? That I’ll be there at the coming day. John said the city was just foursquare. And he declared he’d meet me there. When Peter was preaching at Pentecost, He was endowed with the Holy Ghost.

Sermon | “The Snooze Button” | The Rev. Ryan Balsan

Time for Reflection

+ Affirmation of Faith | A selection from A Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.*

Offertory Anthem | 9:30AM Chancel Choir | 11:00AM Quartet + Choral Scholars

Precious Lord, Take My Hand Elaine Hagenberg (b. 1979) Precious Lord, take my hand, Bring me home through the night. Through the dark, through the storm, to thy light. I have been to the mount, I have seen the Promised Land: Precious Lord, take my hand. Precious, Lord, take my hand, bring thy child home at last, where the strife and the pain all are past: I have dreamed a great dream that thy love shall rule our land: Precious Lord, take my hand. Precious Lord, take my hand, take thy child unto thee, with my dream of a world that is free. For that day when all flesh joins the glory thou hast planned, Precious Lord, take my hand. - Text adapted from Thomas A. Dorsey’s original version by Joyce Mermon (1921-1996) - following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1968).
