+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

God our Savior, we ask for your mercy. Though we have heard Mary’s song, we still seek security in pride and power and possessions. Though we know your story, we resist the costs of following you. We pass by those considered lowly in this world. We turn away from hungry people who still wait to be filled. Forgive us, we pray. Help us to work for the justice you intend. Make us messengers of the peace you bring. As we wait for you, turn our apathy into acts of love and service. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel. Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God.

+ Response of Praise: Come , Thou Long Expected Jesus (V. 4) STUTTGART

Time for Reflection

Litany of Advent | O Antiphons

The O Antiphons are 8th Century prayers that are often used in daily prayer for the seven days before Christmas Eve. Historically, the O Antiphons were sung. In Latin , the seven short reflections are seven images of Christ in scripture. The seven first letters – Sapientia (wisdom), Adoni (Lord), Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse), Clavis David

(Key of David), Oriens (Radiant Dawn), Rex Gentium (Ruler of the nations), and Emmanuel (God with us) - make up a backward acrostic ero cras: “tomorrow I will come , ” which reminds us of the hope we have in Christ’s promised second coming.

O Wisdom, coming forth from the mouth of the Most High, pervading and permeating all creation, you order all things with strength and gentleness: Come now and teach us the way to salvation. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Adonai, ruler of the House of Israel, you appeared in the burning bush to Moses and gave him the law on Sinai: come with outstretched arm to save us. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Root of Jesse, rising as a sign for all the peoples, before you earthly rulers will keep silent, and nations give you honor: Come quickly to deliver us. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Key of David, scepter over the house of Israel, you open and no one can close, you close and no one can open: come to set the prisoners free. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come, shine on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Ruler of the nations, monarch for whom the people long, you are the cornerstone uniting all humanity: come, save us all, whom you formed out of clay. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Emmanuel, our Sovereign and lawgiver, desire of the nations and Savior of all: come and save us, O Lord our God. Come, Lord Jesus.

Silence

God of Grace, ever faithful to your promises, the earth rejoices in hope of our Savior’s coming and looks forward with longing to his return at the end of time. Prepare our hearts to receive him when he comes, for he is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Offertory Anthem | | 9:30AM Chancel Choir | 11:00AM Quartet + Choral Scholars

Magnificat in C Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)

My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold , from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers , Abraham and his seed , forever. Glory be to the Father , and to the Son , and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now , and ever shall be , world without end. Amen.
