Sunday, August 30, 2026 14th Sunday after Pentecost Samuel Sabastian Wesley (1810-1876)

+ Call to Worship Gather us in, we of broken and joyful hearts. Gather us in, we who are meek and strong. Gather us in, we who are fearful and brave. Gather us in, we who are bold and doubtful. Gather us in, to sing and to praise. Gather us in, to worship and wonder. Gather us in, to know of God’s love.

GATHER US IN

+ Hymn 401: Here in This Place

+ Call to Confession + Prayer of Confession Holy Lord, sometimes our lives have so little focus. There is always so much to do. We possess so much stuff, and we’re driven by the need for more. Forgive us, God, for how distracted we’ve become, for losing our way without even realizing it. Guide us back to you and help us know in our hearts and souls that you are all we need. Through Christ, we pray. Amen. + Declaration of Forgiveness God so loved the world that God gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but may have eternal life. Friends, hear the Good News of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

+ Response of Praise

GLORIA PATRI (Greatorex)

+ Passing of the Peace The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Words of Welcome & Announcements Prayer for Illumination Scripture Reading | James 4:11-17 + Hymn: Take My Life and Let It Be

HOLLINGSIDE

Scripture Reading | Acts 9:17-31 Anthem | David Price, tenor | Josef Samargia, bass Steal Away Trad. African-American Spiritual | Arr. Lloyd Larson (b.1954) Steal away, steal away, steal to Jesus! Steal away, steal away home, I ain’t got long to stay here. My Lord, he calls me, he calls me by the thunder (v. 2: lightning); the trumpet sounds within my soul; I ain’t got long to stay here. Sermon | “Doing the Hard Thing” | The Rev. Katy Shevel Cunningham Time for Reflection + Affirmation of Faith | The Confession of 1967 To be reconciled to God is to be sent into the world as God’s reconciling community. This community, the church universal, is entrusted with God’s message of reconciliation and shares God ’s labor of healing the enmities which separate people from God and from each other. Christ has called the church to this mission and given it the gift of the Holy Spirit. The church maintains continuity with the apostles and with Israel by faithful obedience to his call. The life, death, resurrection, and promised coming of Jesus Christ has set the pattern

Continued from previous page pattern for the church’s mission. His human life involves the church in the common life of all people. His service to men and women commits the church to work for every form of human well-being. His suffering makes the church sensitive to all human suffering so that it sees the face of Christ in the faces of persons in every kind of need. His crucifixion discloses to the church God’s judgment on the inhumanity that marks human relations, and the awful consequences of the church’s own complicity in injustice. In the power of the risen Christ and the hope of his coming, the church sees the promise of God’s renewal of human life in society and of God’s victory over all wrong. The church follows this pattern in the form of its life and in the method of its action. So to live and serve is to confess Christ as Lord. O, Canaan, bright Canaan, I’m bound for the land of Canaan, O, Canaan, it is my happy home, I am bound for the land of Canaan. I’ll join with them who’ve gone before, I am bound for the land of Canaan. Where sin and sorrows are no more, I am bound for the land of Canaan.
