+ Call to Worship Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise. Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! Because of your great power, your enemies cringe before you. All the earth worships you; they sing praises to you, sing praises to your name.” Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds among mortals. + Hymn 15: All Creatures of Our God and King
LASST UNS ERFREUEN
+ Call to Confession + Prayer of Confession Holy God, we come before You in humility, for we do not live as we ought. We do not love You with our whole heart and mind and strength. We do not love our neighbor as ourselves. Have mercy on us, O God, and forgive us. Change our hearts and minds, and show us again how to love others the way You love us. Grant to us the power and courage to do your will. This we pray in Jesus’ name and for His sake. Amen. + Declaration of Forgiveness The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Friends, believe the Good News: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Scripture Reading | II Samuel 14:25-33; II Samuel 18:9-15, 31-33 Anthem | David Price, tenor | John Grecia, piano Herbert Howells (1892-1983) King David King David was a sorrowful man: no cause for his sorrow had he; and he called for the music of a hundred harps, to ease his melancholy. They played till they all fell silent: Played and play sweet did they; But the sorrow that haunted the heart of King David they could not charm away. He rose; and in his garden walked by the moon alone, a nightingale hidden in a cypress tree, jargoned on and on. King David lifted his sad eyes into the dark-boughed tree - "Tell me, thou little bird that singest, who taught my grief to thee?" But the bird in no-wise heeded; and the king in the cool of the moon hearkened to the nightingale's sorrowfulness, till all his own was gone. -Walter De la Mare (1873 –1956) Sermon | “From Sorrow to Lament” | The Rev. Ryan Balsan Time for Reflection + Affirmation of Faith | The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
Continued from previous page. who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) Adapted by Ross Hilton (1914) Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak but Thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand. Open now the crystal fountains whence the living waters flow. Let the fiery, cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Feed me with the heav’nly manna in the barren wilderness. Be my sword, and shield, and banner, be the Lord my Righteousness. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canann’s side. - William Williams (1745)
