ORDER OF WORSHIP

Sunday, August 10, 2025 9th Sunday after Pentecost

+ Please stand as you are able.

Prelude | John Grecia, organ

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) Melody

+ Call to Worship

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths of the sea; though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble with its tumult. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Let us worship God together.

+ Hymn 664: BUNESSAN Morning Has Broken

+ Call to Confession

+ Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, your justice protects those who are weak, yet we seek the shelter of privilege and power. Your righteousness redeems those who are poor, yet we seek the status of wealth and possessions. Your peace upholds those who are oppressed, yet we seek the security of weapons and retribution.

Forgive us our sins, and lead us to true repentance, that we may trust you in all things; through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

+ Declaration of Forgiveness

Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun.

By the grace of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

+ Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

Affirmation of Faith | The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended

into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The language we use in the Apostles’ Creed is an updated translation from the “traditional” language (Holy Ghost , quick and the dead , etc.). The reason we use the updated translation is to use clear , contemporary language for those to whom the Creed is unfamiliar. Feel free to use the language that you are most comfortable using! – RB

As he heads off to begin his next chapter at the University of Delaware, we send him with our prayers, gratitude, and best wishes.
