Champions Philanthropyof

Thank you for trusting the Foundation to support your charitable goals! We are grateful to the many individuals and families that established new funds and made gifts to one or more of the many nonprofit organizations in Wayne County. We are proud to help steward these gifts that impact our home.
In 2022, the Foundation received more than $2.8 million in gifts, established 24 new funds, and granted $2.3 million to organizations supporting our community, including $564,000 in scholarship awards to rising or returning college students.
This year, we will be honoring two individuals for their commitment to Wayne County and dedication to our philanthropic community with the Charles A. Rodefeld and the Ruth J. Wickemeyer Awards. Both awardees have a Spirit of Philanthropy that impacts Wayne County. Our Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are featured along with legacy giving and impact-driven grantmaking.
We hope the stories on the following pages serve to illustrate the impact of the Foundation’s work throughout Wayne County. When people care enough to give generously and support their charitable interests and communities, there is no end to what can be accomplished.
Kathryn Girten Rebecca Gilliam 2023 Board Chair Executive DirectorIn 2022, the Wayne County Foundation recognized our entire community as “champions of philanthropy.” Through the Champions of Philanthropy Campaign, the Foundation showcased our supporters (even put them on billboards!), shared their giving stories, and why they chose to work with the Foundation.
In 2022, we were purposeful in highlighting some of these champions. We have shared their stories, what they support, and how it has impacted lives—theirs and our residents. More importantly, we emphasized how their generous giving has impacted nonprofits in Wayne County now and for the future.
That’s why it’s part of our mission. In our community, philanthropy is truly the story of enhancing the spirit of community and improving the quality of life in Wayne County.
Generous. Supportive. Purposeful. Helpful. Passionate. A giver of time, talent, and funds. This is what a champion of philanthropy means.
A giving spirit has long been woven into the fabric of Wayne County. In 1979, after years of planning and discussion, the Wayne County Foundation was formally established. It was an instant success with businesses, philanthropists, and community supporters wanting to help others. Members of the community could now create a philanthropic legacy for themselves and their families. Moreover, it gave them an avenue to pursue their passions while actively addressing the various needs of Wayne County.
Just one year later, the first grants to nonprofit organizations and scholarships to students were awarded. Four decades later, the Foundation has awarded more than $35 million to local organizations and students in our community. All with the help of donors who give of their funds; who give of their time; and who invest in supporting local causes and organizations. True champions of philanthropy.
“We are a trusted partner in philanthropy,” shared Foundation Executive Director Rebecca Gilliam.“ I love working with donors who have this desire, almost need, to give back and provide support for a cause or an organization. It is incredible to assist individuals and families achieve their charitable goals.”
As the Foundation looks to the future, we will continue to be responsible stewards of the resources for those who love Wayne County today, tomorrow, and forever.
“Philanthropy has long been a tradition in Wayne County. I don’t know where it started,
but it certainly seems to continue, and we just have a very giving spirit here.”
Marty and Beth Van Der Burgt
“When you give and you see the joy it brings to others, you’ll find it also brings joy to you. It’s just important to do; to give, and to make life better for those around you.”
Avis StewartIn memory of their son Eli, Meghan and Chad Neal founded the Eli’s Purpose Memorial Scholarship in 2018. A longtime community leader and a two-time member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors Marty and Beth are members of the Foundation’s Legacy Society.
For more than four decades the Wayne County Foundation has helped generous individuals and families create their philanthropic legacies that bene it our community. Today.Tomorrow. Forever.
Jon and Suzette Igelman have always had ties to Wayne County and East Central Indiana. Jon grew up and attended school in Richmond, and while Suzette was raised in Fayette County, her family would often visit the “big city” of Richmond for events and shopping at the many downtown stores. After meeting at Indiana University and marrying in 1956, Jon and Suzette lived all across the country; Jon was a practicing physician who had joined the Air Force in 1958 (he ultimately rose to the rank of full colonel and served during the Vietnam War), while Suzette remained active raising their children and staying engaged in the community or one of their many Air Force bases.
Though they hadn’t always lived in Wayne County, the Igelmans knew where they wanted to retire. “Though we’d been a lot of places, we decided Richmond,” Jon shared. “We just loved all the opportunities to enjoy the arts and museums here,” added Suzette.
It was shortly after the Igelmans made Richmond their home that they began their relationship with the Wayne County Foundation. With a planned gift and the establishment of a charitable trust, Jon and Suzette committed to supporting the community today and after they are gone.
“As a doctor, I suppose I’ve always had a giving spirit and attitude,” Jon said. In honor of Jon’s service to our country, one of the causes supported through the Igelman’s trust is the Wayne County Veterans Park – where Jon and Suzette visit often.

In 2022, the Wayne County Foundation took a new approach to grantmaking. Organizations are able to seek a variety of grants three times per year. Mini, Crisis, Impact and Nonprofit Support grants provided funding opportunities to a wider array of nonprofit organizations throughout the year.
Our grantmaking is made possible through the generosity of donors that have established funds at the Foundation.
Hope House is Wayne County’s only homeless shelter and residential recovery center specifically for men. Since 2001, the shelter was housed on the campus of the Richmond State Hospital. Following a successful capital campaign, supported by a Foundation grant of $25,000, Hope House moved to their new facility on North 10th Street in Richmond. The new facility will better serve their clients and provide increased flexibility to better meet participant needs. Hope House is positioned to increase their positive impact on our community in 2023 and beyond.
“We have served more than 2,000 people since we opened our doors 22 years ago and couldn’t do it without community partners like the Wayne County Foundation,” said Hope House Executive Director Whitney Mays. “We take their faith in us seriously - we squeeze every last inch out of every last penny.”
The finished space includes sleeping quarters, a common area for classes and meals, and office space for staff.
After hearing more about the challenges that residents of Hagerstown were facing during his 50th class reunion gathering, former Hagerstown resident Max Brown decided he wanted to ensure that the town remained “a great place to grow up, go to school, and live.” Max established the Hagerstown Hometown Fund in 2014.
“The fund was intended for education, which is the key to everything, and to help the social needs of the community,” Brown shared. Already, the fund has granted nearly $35,000 to support organizations serving the Hagerstown area including: Nettle Creek School Corporation, Communities in Schools of Wayne County, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County, and Gleaners Food Bank.
In 2022, Brown, proving once again to be a champion of philanthropy offered matching dollars to help the fund continue to grow. More than $7,100 was raised for the Fund during the match period.
“Hagerstown has always been a special place for those who lived there,” Brown shared. “It seems to me that the fund has picked up some momentum – and the Foundation has been aggressive in making sure that it’s doing good in the community.”
In 2022, the Foundation supported the Wayne County Historical Museum’s Signature Exhibit, “Gennett Records: The Birthplace of American Recorded Music”. The exhibit preserves a vital part of Wayne County’s past and features informative and interactive elements that tell the story of Gennett Records.
“The story of the Gennett family, who were Italian immigrants, is a true story of American entrepreneurship,” said Museum Director Karen Shank-Chapman.“ The Wayne County Historical Museum is incredibly grateful to the Wayne County Foundation for their support and enthusiasm for this exhibit.”
The exhibit, originally displayed at the Indiana Historical Society, now has a permanent home in Richmond.

MORE THAN $2.3 MILLION IN GRANTS AND
Award
named for the first executive director of the Wayne County Foundation. The award seeks to honor nonprofit leaders, whether paid or volunteer, who personify exceptional service to others in the name of community progress.
Robin Henry was nominated by the Richmond Art Museum (RAM) to honor her involvement with the organization. Shaun Dingwerth, Executive Director of the Richmond Art Museum, wrote about Robin: “I have personally been the beneficiary of her mentorship and knowledge. Throughout my twenty-five years at RAM, I have encountered few that are so willing to share their knowledge and help whenever possible. I know countless others in our community who have benefited from her advice, activism, and willingness to share.”
Robin has been a dedicated servant leader for the Wayne County community as early as the age of twenty-two when she became the youngest and only second woman elected to the Richmond City Council. Her most significant accomplishment is the direct impact on each institution and individual she has been affiliated with. Her skills help grow, strengthen, and create awareness of the organizations she volunteers with.
Robin is a dedicated community leader that has served alongside many organizations including: Beth Boruk Temple, Main Street Richmond, Richmond Art Museum, Every Child Can Read, IUE School of Business and Economics, and the Wayne County Republican Party. Wayne County is fortunate to have Robin, a wise and generous philanthropist.
The Charles A. Rodefeld Award for Leadership in Philanthropy and Community seeks to recognize Wayne County individuals and companies who have been there when organizations needed them most, served faithfully and well, and who have provided leadership and significant financial support over the years.
Nominated by the Richmond Symphony Orchestra to honor his ongoing commitment to the organization and his dedication through board leadership, philanthropic gifts, and seasonal attendance, Dave is a tireless supporter and advocate for the Richmond Symphony Orchestra.
Monica Koechlein, Executive Director of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, wrote about Dave, “He is extraordinary, constantly on the lookout for ways that he can be helpful and create change. He is remarkable; the impact he has made with his gifts of financial support and leadership on boards has served to build strong futures for our non-profit community. I would even go so far as to say his impact is unequaled.“
Additionally, his passion for education, the environment, arts and quality of life in Wayne County has led him to be a champion for Richmond Parks and Recreation, Indiana University East, Richmond Art Museum, Cope Environmental Center, Hayes Arboretum, Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County, Earlham College, Ivy Tech and the Wayne County Foundation…to name a few.
Dave quietly inspires, encourages, and motivates others to support worthy community efforts. He is engaged, always asks thought provoking questions and finds ways to make an impact on the organizations he serves alongside that allows them to “live out” their mission.
Since the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program was first offered in 1998, 55 Wayne County students have received the scholarship. Recipients receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship and book stipend to a public or private Indiana college or university of their choice.
Aubrey Morgan attends Centerville High School, where she has excelled in the classroom and earned a 4.14 grade point average on a four-point scale. Some of her extracurricular activities include cross country, track & field, model legislation, National Honor Society, and band. Aubrey was described by a teacher as “the best student I have ever taught.” Another teacher stated she is “the hardest working student I have ever come across in my career.”
She plans to study pharmacology at Butler University.
Rebekah Stanley attends Richmond High School, where she has earned a 4.48 grade point average on a four-point scale. During her time at Richmond she has participated in student council, National Honor Society, Red Devil Mentors, and she is very involved with her church. One of her teachers said she has “seen nothing from Rebekah but an intense desire to succeed and to bring others with her.”
Rebekah plans to attend Ball State University and study elementary education.

The Wayne County Foundation, through its Forward Wayne County (FWC) Community Leadership initiative, had the unique opportunity to champion community leadership in 2022. The initiative spearheaded projects that enhance Wayne County’s talent attraction, talent retention, and quality of place. Here are a few highlights from 2022...
In conjunction with the annual Quality of Place Conference, we hosted the first Quality of Place Breakfast with nearly 25 community stakeholders that have an interest in neighborhood development, downtown revitalization, and historic preservation. The breakfast featured keynote speaker Jeff Siegler from Revitalize or Die. Jeff has assisted hundreds of communities with their revitalization, economic sustainability, and community development over the course of his career. This type of partnership will complement our new local impact investing program, catalyzing community development throughout the county.
The Main Street Coalition completed the Main Street Structural Feasibility study with more than 60 buildings across four Main Streets assessed. Community leader meetings will begin in the Spring of 2023 to share results. The Coalition also created the Mystery on Main history trail with the RichmondWayne County Convention & Tourism Bureau and local historians. They engaged 20 business owners to be part of the trail. This is also generating business and activity for shops along our Main Streets. Last, the coalition invested in their local communities. For example, Main Street Centerville added an art installment in their park (above).
FWC expanded its role as a catalyst for community development with the Foundation’s Lilly Endowment Inc. Implementation grant that focused on neighborhood development and workforce development. Nearly $100,000 in grants were awarded to support a career awareness campaign, quality of place projects, and workforce development. In addition, we measured our community engagement over the grant cycle. We met with nearly 250 educators, businesses, community partners, judicial systems, nonprofits, governments (local, city, and county), economic development, employers, and special interest groups.
We expanded the NICE! training program by reaching into the nonprofit sector with a goal of engaging 10 local nonprofits. The training focused on asset-based community development, constituent engagement, and donor relations. Twelve nonprofit organizations participated.
“Thanks to the Foundation, Brighter Path was able to engage with other community nonprofits to build connections, create partnerships, and learn valuable nonprofit management skills,” said Emma Ullery with Brighter Path, Inc.
“Nearly $100,000 in grants were awarded...”
