Baseball team hopes to make Lady kickers looking a run for the championship to start strong in SMAC With a talented roster which includes eight returning starters, Kings Mountain High’s baseball team hopes to make a run for the SMAC 2A/3A championship this spring. Second-year coach Matt Bridges saw his team make the state 3A playoffs last year. The Mountaineers hadn’t competed in the state since 2008, when they won the Southwestern Conference. Despite missing four days of spring practice because of snow, Coach Bridges says the team is looking good. “We’ve got a lot of excited kids,” he says. The Mountaineers had a very good Hickory team on the ropes in the opening round of last year’s playoffs, leading by two runs before Hickory came back to win in extra innings. The Red Tornadoes then went all the way to the Western finals. The Mountaineers have been working hard to improve in every phase of the game. “Last year we were not a big hitting team,” Coach Bridges noted, “but this year we should produce some runs.” Returning players that started most of the time last year include catcher Colby Crisp, infielders Alex Reynolds, Logan Stevens, Cameron Bullock, Daniel Barrett and Will Wilson, outfielder Zachary Hegler and pitcher Alex Grooms. Bullock, along with Shawn Adams, got a late start due to playing on the Mountaineer basketball team in the state 3A playoffs. Other players include Cameron Ramsey, Landon Bolin, Shad Johnson, Robbie Lysek, Brandon Bell, Tristen Davis and Jacob Lainhart. At present, Coach Bridges plans to go with a two-man pitching rotation of Bolin and Grooms. Reynolds will be the relief pitcher. Bridges feels the key to the Mountaineers’ success this year will be run produc-

tion. “Situational hitting, clutch hits with runners in scoring position,” he said. “And the starting pitchers have to go deep into the game.” He feels defense will be the team’s strong point. The Mountaineers should be strong at every position. “The lineup could change depending on who’s pitching,” he said. “We have a lot of options. We have a solid infield.” The younger players up from last year’s JV team are also a talented group, Bridges said. “We have a lot more
depth than we did last year,” Bridges says. “And we’ll have a lot of guys in the dugout that can run. Hegler, Adams and Lysek all have good speed along with Bell, Reynolds and Wilson.” While the Big South was always a challenge with teams like South Point, Forestview and North Gaston putting good teams on the field, the new SMAC 2A/3A will be too. “This year will be just as tough,” Bridges said. “There are a lot of good teams in the SMAC. Kings Mountain High’s women’s soccer team officially opened its season at home against East Rutherford. The Lady Mountaineers have played well in two scrimmages and hope to get off to a good start in the new SMAC 2A/3A. Kings Mountain and Crest join county rival Burns as the 3A members of the league and Shelby, Chase, East Rutherford, RS Central, East Burke and Draughn are the 2A members. Mountaineer coach Erik Price has several starters returning from last year’s team which posted a 10-12-1 overall record. Returning seniors are Mikayla Price, Maddie Skeith and Katy Robinson and returning juniors are Sara Smart, Courtney Johnson, Lauren Gould, MC Dellinger, Lyndsey Barnes, Jamie Slater and Johnna Scism. Freshmen Sara Paysour, Virginia Dellinger and Ashley Rhom hope to make a big impact on the program, along with junior Kimberlee Farris and senior Mary Asgari. Freshman Ashley Rhom posted a shutout in goal in her very first high school game. “We have looked good in practice and in our first scrimmage with East Gaston,” noted Coach Price. “The girls are doing the things we’ve been working on and that’s always nice to

see.” Price admits he’s a little nervous about going into the new conference but hopes to see his girls build on last year’s record and make a second straight trip to the state 3A playoffs. “We feel like we’re pretty strong on defense and we’re spending a lot of time trying to work on attacking and getting into the offensive zone and score more goals this year,” he said. “We feel like we should be stronger and a little more competitive this season,” he
added. “We only lost one player and over the last couple of years we’ve gotten better. We’ve got the makeup if we can get on the same page. A lot of these girls have been playing soccer for a long time. He looks for a very competitive season. “Definitely, Shelby’s always good,” he added, “All of the other Cleveland County teams are good. That’s the crew that always have a bunch of girls out See SOCCER, 7C

Coach Short looking to younger players to fill key positions Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team has some key positions to fill as it enters its first season in the SMAC 2A/3A Conference. The Lady Mountaineers were scheduled to host East Rutherford in their first SMAC game last night. They go to Burns Friday and host Shelb next Tuesday. Veteran coach Craig Short returns five starters off last year’s team and is looking for some promising younger players to fill the other spots. The lineup will probably fluctuate a good bit this year as the Mountaineers do not yet have an “ace” pitcher. Emily Hester and Mikeala Bell, who were All-Conference players at other positions last year, will be seeing action on the mound along with freshman Jennifer Hamrick. Hester and Bell were joined on last year’s Big South All-Conference team by infielder Molly Short, and yet another infielder, Leah Herndon, barely missed out on the honor. Short, a two-time AllConference selection, saw most of her playing time at shortstop in the past but could be seen at first, second, short or third this season. Herndon, a middle infielder last year, is slated to be the starting catcher. The other returnee, sophomore Miranda Ellis, will probably be in the middle infield but got a late start due to playing basketball. Other members of the team are Ashton Withers, Kassidy Hamrick, Madison Hoyle, Brinsia White, Megan McQueen, Gretchen Boyles, Mandy Hamick, Kayla Skidmore, Sarah Scism, Destiny Hamrick and Hailey Wheaton.
“We’ve got some holes to fill,” says Coach Short, who got a good look at his prospects during scrimmages last week. Until then, practice time had been almost non-existent because of the recent show that closed school for almost a week. “We’re going to be moving people around some,” Short said. “We don’t know yet who will be on first base when Emily is pitching. Honestly, during early practice I was worried a lot because of missing four days but last week we got a lot better.” Short said he has been pleasantly surprised with the pitching and hitting, and defense has been a strong point. “It’s just like in football,” he said. “Defense usually comes along quicker than offense.” Pitching-wise, this season will probably be much different than the past three when Reagan Childers was the ace and pitched most of the games. “I don’t doubt the talent of our pitchers,” Short noted, “but I don’t think we will have an ace. It will probably be pitching by committee.” Hester will probably be at first base when she’s not on the mound, and Bell will
pitch and play centerfield. Coach Short is carrying 18 girls because he has a lot of promising young players. He has developed a modified JV schedule to get the younger girls some field experience. He feels like the SMAC conference will be much tougher than the Big South where the Lady Mountaineers finished third in 2013 behind South Point and Crest with an 8-6 BSC and 14-10 overall record. “Honestly, this new conference is much tougher than the Big South,” he said. “All of the Rutherford County teams (East Rutherford, RS Central and Chase) are traditionally strong and so are the Burke County teams (East Burke and Draughn). “I saw East Rutherford play last weekend and they look really good. And all of the Cleveland County schools are good. Shelby is better than they have been, and Burns, Crest and Kings Mountain are traditionally strong. “The Big South was topheavy with us, South Point and Crest. I don’t see that in this new conference. It will be really tough. We have our work cut out for us, but based on what I have seen we can compete. It will de-
pend on how well we do on the rubber and how our younger players step up.” Short said he expects the returning starters to initially occupy the top five positions in the batting lineup but if younger players come through they could move up higher. He stresses that every position is wide open. “Leah Herndon is definitely going to be the starting catcher,” he said. “She played middle infield last year but she has caught on travel teams many times. “I’d say, right now, our top four or five batters in the lineup would be Leah leading off and Emily Hester, Molly Short, Mikeala Bell and Miranda Ellis being the next four with possibly some fluctuation in the batting order. “We’re trying to get the more experienced players at the top of the order, but on the other hand I have been really pleased with Gretchen Boyles’ and Ashton Withers’ bats. “Younger players are always the question marks - if they can handle the pressure we put on them,” he said. “But I think the scrimmages have given them confidence and I believe all of them will come through for us.” Note: Some players were not available on photo day.

Kings Mountain High’s 2014 men’s golf team: Front row, left to right, Hunter Ward, Carson Bailey, Elliott Mann, Dawson Adams, Jeremy Carson, Cameron Mack. Back row, Zack Saldo, Jacob Miller, Miles Robinson, Hunter Cooke, Andrew Estridge, coach Kevin Moss.
Golfers young, but have high expectations for new SMAC season Kings Mountain High’s golf team hopes to be much improved as they compete in their first season in the SMAC 2A/3A. For the most part, the Mountaineers are young but veteran coach Kevin Moss said they have high expectations. The team includes four freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and two seniors. Kings Mountain’s returning players are Jeremy Car-
son, Hunter Cooke, Andrew Estridge, Jacob Miller, Miles Robinson and Zackery Saldo. Newcomers are Dawson Adams, Carson Bailey, Elliott Mann, Cameron Mack and Hunter Ward. Moss lost two key players to graduation, including two-time Western Regional qualifier Matt Sheppard. Key returning player is Robinson, who was All-Big South Conference and a Western Regional qualifier.
“We are a young team but most of the players we have are experienced, Moss said. “This freshman group were middle school conference champions last year so these guys have experienced some success. I am expecting these guys to come in and contribute to our team scores immediately. “In years past, we had only one or two players who could post good scores and we struggled as a team to

consistently post four solid scores in our matches. “This year’s team has the potential to post four competitive scores for each match. The addition of this good freshman class combined with our returning players will hopefully put us in a position to compete for a conference championship. Moss said he expects Shelby and Crest to be good again, but he is not familiar with other schools in the new conference.
“It’s been several years since we played against the Rutherford County schools and we have never played against Draughn or East Burke, he said. “I am sure all of those teams are practicing hard every day and getting ready for conference play. Kings Mountain has been practicing Monday through Thursday at Kings Mountain Country Club and will host three matches there this season.
All matches will be 18 holes except for a March 12 home match with Ashbrook, which will be nine holes. Matches begin at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers host Burns and Crest in their first match March 10 and again on March 31. Regular season matches will see the SMAC 2A teams playing at different sites than the 3A teams. All schools will play in the April 29 match hosted by East Burke at Quaker Meadows.

of people are going to beat each other up.” The key for the Mountaineers, Bridges said, is “just playing baseball. As long as we go out and play like we’re supposed to we will be alright. We have playoff ex-

The Kings Mountain High women’s track team is looking forward to another successful season following back-to-back Big South Conference championships and undefeated seasons in 2012 and 2013. “Moving into the South Mountain Athletic Conference, we know that we will face a totally different set of talented athletes this season,” said head coach Haley Spearman, “but as a coach, I have faith in my girls and the work that they do. “I have 25 returning athletes this year, 11 of which are seniors that I have coached since they were freshmen. I am looking forward to a successful showing from my seniors, and expect big things from them this season. “I am excited to have 14 additional returning athletes. I am confident that they will continue to be successful in their individual events.” In addition to the 25 returning athletes, Coach Spearman said she is pleased to have more than 25 new athletes. “As a coach, I am a little nervous about the upcoming season,” she said. “We became really comfortable in the Big South, and now, we will be facing a few teams that we don’t know a lot about. We are coming off of two undefeated seasons, and I know that sooner or later,
our first loss in two seasons will come. It is inevitable.” Spearman said the Lady Mountaineers need to put in hard work this year and need to be focused and educated. “Any and every win will be earned through hard work and dedication,” she said. “I am excited about the new season, but I know that it will require a lot of work. I hope the girls are ready to get focused.” Spearman has experienced athletes in numerous events, including: -Shakiya Stephens and Sharda Whiteside, shot put. -Emily Harris and Taylor Sanders, discus. -Betzaira Saenz, long jump and 4x400. -Sarah Scism and Gwen Hopper, long jump and triple jump. -Brittany Poeng, long jump, triple jump and high jump. -Tynesha Merriman, 200 and 400 meters. -Mackenzie Smith, distance events. -Sarah Bradshaw, 400. -Tyquassia Mackey, 100 and 4x100 relay. Kings Mountain will host the annual Mountaineer Relays Thursday with Burns, Chase and Crest coming to John Gamble Stadium at 4 p.m. The women’s Pre-Conference meet will be at East Burke on Tuesday, March 12.

Men’s track facing a challenging season Kings Mountain High’s track team - just like most others in the SMAC 2A/3A - face a major challenge this year in that all of them will be chasing Shelby for the conference championship. Mountaineer head coach Rayvis Key says the Golden Lions will not only be the
heavy favorite in the SMAC and the Western Regional, but probably in the state 2A meet as well. Kings Mountain is one of three 3A teams in the SMAC. The Mountaineers hope to be in the mix against county 3A rivals Crest and Burns, and also the other five 2A teams

in the league. “Shelby finished second in the Regional last year and is a powerhouse 2A track team, said Key. “Our only edge on them will probably be in the pole vault, which they don’t do, and with Graham Keeter (shot) and Solomon Hawkins (high jump). Key says a top three finish would be a good year for the Mountaineers. “We know what Shelby, Crest and Burns have, he said. “But as far as the Rutherford and Burke County teams, we’re blind into what they have. “Everybody knows Shelby will win it. They have talent dripping out of their ears. It wouldn’t shock me to see them win the Regional and State. Key has a 41-man roster this year, and a lot of them are younger players which bodes well for the future. The Mountaineers should be strong in the shot because of Keeter, who was a state qualifier last year, and the high jump, where
Hawkins was a state qualifier. Josh Boheler has been one of the area’s top pole vaulters since his freshman year. “Hopefully, Josh will break 11 feet this year, Key said. Key expects the relay teams to be good, led by veteran juniors Tico Crocker and Xavier Johnson. “I’m hesitant about the distance runners, Key said. “They’re sorting each other out to see who is the leader. Senior Will Boyles will help guide our distance runners. He’s getting better every year. The Mountaineers open their regular season Thursday at 4 p.m. with the Mountaineer Relays at John Gamble Stadium. Burns, Crest and Chase will provide the opposition. The first SMAC meet will be held Tuesday at East Burke. “We’re hoping for a top three finish, Key said, “but that’s being very ambitious.
