CC EMS squad thanked for helping in delivery of family’s “miracle” child

“Frantic night” turns into one of joy with birth of little Trissie Lee Messer

In August 2023 a Kings Mountain family welcomed their newest addition – a beautiful baby girl – thanks in part, they said, to the quick response and actions of members of the Cleveland County EMS squad.

Almost a year later, and to honor those who took part in coming to their aid during a very trying, and scary time, on May 21, 2024, family members and others met with that same Cleveland County EMS team who arrived and gave aid, and to thank them, as they said, “… for their part in saving the life of our granddaughter, Trissie Lee Messer, and taking care of mom, Shannon Messer, on a frantic night in August, 2023.”

The ‘thanks’ took the form of a special cake and certificates for the team, which consisted of Telecommunicator Ben Green, Paramedics Michael Harris, Rhett Ballard, Jerron Daves, EMT Leann Mullinax, and Sergeant Jeremiah Allen. Back in August 2023, little Trissie was born to unsuspecting parents Bruce and Shannon Messer. The couple had adopted two babies over 10 years ago, Shalee and Waylon, with Shannon having been told that she could never have children.

As for Trissie, Shannon said the doctors were amazed at her and at how she had no issues resulting from her premature birth, which came two months before her due date.

“Trissie now weighs over 15 pounds, and is a healthy and beautiful little girl!” Shannon said.

EMTs Michael Harris and Rhett Bullard were the first two on the scene of the delivery at the house, with Harris noting the call was “…itself different from our everyday calls. We didn’t know what we were walking in to; we had no idea.” Harris said he was the lead on the call but couldn’t have done what he did without Bullard’s help. “We’re trained to be adaptive in all situations,” he added.

Our world faces unprecedented turmoil, with far-reaching consequences for our governments, institutions, communities, and families. It’s easy to point fingers and blame others, but the root cause of our problems lies in sin, and the root cause of sin is a subtle yet destructive force called pride. At its core, pride is an attitude of the heart that exalts oneself above others, and ultimately above God. When our selfish desires take precedence over biblical instructions or we neglect the gentle guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can fall into the trap of pride. Often, it manifests itself in choices that harm our relationships,

as we prioritize our desires over the well-being of others. To combat pride, we must be deliberate in our efforts to overcome it, as it can lead to negative consequences in our relationships, decision-making, and overall well-being. Proverbs 16:18 (ESV) so wisely states, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

THE FALL OF LUCIFER

In Isaiah 14:13-17, we read the story of the fall of Lucifer, the morning star and the most beautiful and powerful of God’s angels. Lucifer was once radiant with light and beauty but became proud and arrogant. He began to compare himself to God, and in his pride, he sought to overthrow God and take His throne. This resulted in God casting Lucifer out of heaven, banishing him

to the earth. There, Lucifer became known as Satan, the enemy of God and humanity. The fall of Lucifer teaches us the dangers of pride and arrogance. When we elevate ourselves above others or rebel against God’s word, we are following in Lucifer’s footsteps. But there is hope! Even in rebellion, there is always room for repentance. God offers forgiveness and restoration to those who humble themselves before Him. For those who have fallen under Satan’s influence, Jesus Christ offers redemption and salvation. Micah 6:8 (AMP) says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you except to be just, and to love [and to diligently practice] kindness (compassion), and to walk humbly with your God [setting aside any overblown sense of importance or selfrighteousness]?”

of mercy and grace. Please forgive me for my pride. I know that you are God and I am not. Lord, I ask you to forgive me for exalting my desires above your desires, and my ideas above your word. I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Free Medicine Disposal Kits and Lock Boxes Available at

Local Health Department

SHELBY, NC – As drug overdose deaths and emergency department visits continue to rise in Cleveland County, the Cleveland County Health Department is providing free resources to help prevent medication misuse and abuse. According to NCDHHS, Cleveland County experienced 36 overdose deaths in 2022 and 241 overdose ED visits in 2023. Almost 40% of all overdose ED visits in Cleveland County in 2022 were due to commonly prescribed opioids.

The data shows a clear picture – prescription opioid misuse prevention tools are more important than ever. The Cleveland County Health Department (CCHD) is proud to offer a variety of ways to prevent the misuse of prescription medications.

CCHD has Deterra pouches and medicine lock boxes available free of charge to help local households prevent medication misuse, accidental ingestion, and environmental harm through safe storage and safe disposal of unused or expired medications.

Dependence on prescription opioids can unintentionally start in home medicine cabinets, where unused and expired medication can be easily accessed by family members and friends. Harm reductions methods, like Deterra and medicine lock boxes exist to help our community prevent substance misuse before it starts.

Deterra medication disposal kits are highly effective in rendering drugs inactive and unavailable for misuse and are safe for the environment. In a 3-step process, a user deactivates drugs by putting them in a Deterra Pouch, adding water, shaking, and throwing away in the household garbage. Deterra’s plant-based packaging and non-toxic ingredients also prevent harmful chemicals from entering our landfills and water supplies, making the world safer for everyone.

Medicine lockboxes are also available free of charge as part of the Lock Your Meds national campaign to reduce prescription drug misuse through safe home storage.

Community members who would like a free Deterra medication disposal kit or medicine lock box can pick them up at the front desk of the Cleveland County Health Department located at 200 S. Post Road, Shelby, NC, between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday – Friday. One of the keys in hunting is learning how animals communicate. And as you know, they are always communicating. Just step outside during the early morning hours, and you’ll hear creature after creature communicating. It is so natural that we hardly ever think about it. We hardly ever think about it because most of it just seems like notes and tones with no rhyme or reason. And it seems like random notes and tones because we just don’t understand the language of other species. We might enjoy certain sounds and even know what certain sounds communicate, but our understanding is extremely limited. Therefore, we move in and out of a whole world of communication around us, and never hear what’s said. In fact, many people love the silence they find when they sit quietly outdoors. But in the lives of those creatures around them, things are far from silent. Each animal, mammal, fowl, and insect hear its own kind, and understands. I can’t even imagine a world where communication was absent. I think we really can’t even logically comprehend such a thing. And then there is you and me and God. There is a God who most of us consider personal and who most of us think wants to have a personal relationship with us. And yet many of us would confess the thought that we hardly ever hear from God – that He doesn’t speak. Or at least He doesn’t speak our language. I think even this idea is incomprehensible. What kind of relationship is there if there is no communication? And what kind of relationship is it if only one person does all the talking like we do when we pray? I think you would agree with me, that doesn’t sound like a good or healthy one. Therefore, God speaks. And He speaks to you and me. And He does it in many ways. But before we can really hear God, we must admit that He speaks, and we can hear His voice. I’m glad Jesus made this simple and clear. I’m glad He put this truth on the bottom shelf of learning so we all could reach it. He said, “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10:27 NKJV) The only criterion for hearing God is that we are His sheep. There’s no other prerequisite. A degree is not needed. A lifetime of faithful service doesn’t help. And a life with hurts, habits, and hang-ups doesn’t disqualify us from hearing the voice of God. We just have to be His sheep – His own- His child. So, if you consider yourself one of His own and you are needing to hear God speak to you about your life, begin by confessing this. “I am one of God’s sheep and I can hear Him speak.” And as you begin to believe your confession, you will begin to hear God speaking in place after place. Maybe He is speaking to you now.

Christopher “Robin” Blanton, 63, of Fallston, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024. Robin was born in Cleveland County on November 23, 1960. He was the son of the late William E. Blanton and Jean Wright Blanton of Fallston.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Allen Blanton; two daughters, Sarah-Jane Fitch; and Emily Fitch; brother, Bill Dunaway and wife, Trudy; three sisters, Donna McKinney, Amy Jones and husband, Roy Jones, Tina Rachels and husband, Lem; brother-in-law, Ron McKinney.

Gilbert F. Greene, 88, of Shelby, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Emmett and Euzele Petty Greene.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Hudson Hubbard; a daughter, Misty Moore and husband, Keith of Lawndale; two granddaughters; and a sister, Ruby Heavner of Hickory.

A Funeral Service was held May 30, 2024 at St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Fulbright officiating. The burial followed in the church cemetery.

Steve Russell Hudson, 78, of Shelby, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on May 25, 2024.

Born in Cleveland County on June 4, 1945, he was the son of the late Russell Ray Hudson and Lizzie Davis Hudson.

Steve is survived by his wife, Glenda Leonhardt Hudson, three children, Ronda Branch (Brian) of Polkville, Glen Hudson (Mitzi) of Shelby, and Maria Hudson-Davis (Jeff) of Charlotte; a brother, Rick Hudson (Cecelia) of Boiling Springs, NC and four grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, Dale Hudson.

Born in California, on May 2, 1937, he was a son of the late Rudolph Vance and Louise Elede LeBlanc Vance.

Mr. Vance served our country in the U.S. Marines in Vietnam, where he received a Purple Heart.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Hope Bridges Vance; and six brothers, Rudolph, Manuel, Ramon, Joe, Daniel, and his twin John Vance.
