Kings Mountain event to Mountain event to honor and assist veterans honor and assist veterans

The walking track behind the Kings Mountain Family YMCA at 211 Cleveland Ave. will be the site of a special event 8am to 8pm June 22 honoring veterans and featuring a wide variety of booths and representatives offering assistance for them. One of the event’s focuses will be on veteran suicide and ways it can be prevented.

that veterans know what resources are available to them and the event will focus on that,” he said. “We want to make life easier for veterans and reduce that 22 a day rate.”

Two groups, Mission 22 and Veterans Walk and Roll, are the event’s primary organizers. The number “22” reflects the number of veterans who commit suicide every day. Kevin Evans, a U.S. Navy veteran, is the North Carolina Ambassador for Mission 22 which is a worldwide veterans advocacy organization whose motto is “when their tour is over, our mission begins”.

Veterans Walk and Roll organizer Chris Pullen, also a Navy veteran, gave his thoughts on the upcoming happening.

“The whole idea of the event is to bring people, veteran’s organizations, resources, and agencies together,” he said.

According to Pullen, last year’s event drew about 1,200 folks who walked or rolled in wheelchairs approximately 1,579 miles around the track.

“We had participants ranging in age from children to 91-years old,” Pullen said.

This year, representatives from the Veterans Administration will be on site answering questions, offering resource information, and addressing concerns.

“We are excited about the VA being there,” said Pullen.

The day will be family-oriented with several interesting displays including a 1971 Huey MedEvac helicopter that was used in Vietnam. The copter is from VFW Post 5466 in Taylorsville and will be brought to Kings Mountain on a 1962 Studebaker Packard tion.

In addition, the Gastoniabased United Veterans of America 150’x75’ American flag will be flying overhead the walking track after its raised by an AME Inc. crane. A group of 9th and 10th grade senior level Girl Scouts from Troop 20309 (part of the Peaks to Piedmont district) will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Kings Mtn. Optimist Pee Wee football team and cheerleaders will be represented. Local recording artist Bailey Marie Griggs will sing the National Anthem.

Mission 22,” said Evans.

Speaking of which- on June 1 members of the American Legion Riders Post 155 held a ride to raise funds for Mission 22. The support ride rode from the American Legion Kings Mountain to the Bears Den to American Legion Rock Hill to 4 Lane in Clover to the United Veterans of America in Gastonia, then back to American Legion in Kings Mtn.

Post 155’s incoming commander Becky Flickinger took part in the ride.

“Post 155 is always glad to help Mission 22,” she said.

Overall, Walk and Roll 2024 is going to be a great day for everyone who takes part.

“We’d like to invite everyone to come out on June 22nd to the King Mountain walking track as we raise awareness about the war against veteran suicide,” Evans says. “Mission 22 will sponsor walks at 10:22 am and again at 2:22 pm.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

Philippians 2:3 (NLT)

Have you ever wondered about wonder? I mean have you ever thought why you attribute beauty or awe to certain things? Have you ever been amazed how a large tree can grow from the tiniest crack in a massive rock? Have you ever been rapt by a sunset, a blanket of fog, or ridge of mountains in the fall? I know you have. And I also know you’re beginning to think I’m spending too much time in a tree stand, bored from not seeing deer. Not yet, but I can say this. Deer hunters are people who get to see some of the greatest wonders of earth. Sitting in a tree stand for hours really can make you focus on every particular area in view and analyze its most intricate pieces. There, you are forced to think deeper than what is on the surface. You don’t just see a tree or a rock, but you see an oak and a piece of sandstone. You don’t just see an oak and a piece of sandstone; you see a strutting limb and a unique shape. You don’t just see a strutting limb or a unique shape; you see a guiding force that has sent a seed flying through the wind or a boulder rolling down a hill.

We have today what is known as the Seven Wonders of the World. They are called “Wonders” because the architecture of each structure is greater than the known ability of its designers at the time it was built. This “wonder” is not only in the form of question – “I wonder how these were built?” But the “wonder” here is also the prefix of “wonderful.” “What a wonderful sight to behold!” Beauty is another feather in the hat of those of us who believe in God. Beauty cannot be explained by Darwin’s natural selection or randomness and yet it is evident in every human. If I were to place the world’s most decorated physician alongside a member of the world’s most uncivilized jungle tribe, in front of the Grand Canyon, both would stand in utter awe at the beauty of such a scene. In one way or another each would express the term “wonderful.” But given enough time, soon, “wonderful” would become “I wonder.” That is, I wonder how all of this could happen. And when “wonderful” is put with “I wonder,” the outcome is the same as my little rock and tree – there must be a Guiding Hand.

Spend an evening under the stars while rocking to Pink Floyd's classic rock music at the James H. Lynn Planetarium in The Schiele Museum in Gastonia on Saturday, June 27. The event is part of the popular “Music Under the Stars” series.

The unique two-act program will feature live music performed by The Album Series Band, choreographed to a celestial starlight show of immersive 360-degree visuals. The band specializes in performing classic albums of legendary rock ‘n roll bands, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Metallica, The Allman Brothers, and others.

Based on popular demand,

The Album Series Band will perform two shows at the planetarium on the same day, starting at 5:30 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m.

The music will include two Pink Floyd albums, “Atom Heart Mother,” and “Meddle.”

“Atom Heart Mother” is the band’s fifth studio album, released in 1970. It marked a shift toward progressive rock and experimental rock styles, distinct from their earlier psychedelic material. The album reached number 1 in the UK and eventually went gold in the US. It included the “Atom Heart Mother Suite,” a six-part composition that takes up the entire first side of the original vinyl record. Clocking in at 23 minutes and 38 seconds, it’s one of Pink Floyd’s longest uncut studio pieces.

The most popular song on Pink Floyd’s album Meddle is

“Echoes.” This iconic track is a progressive rock masterpiece known for its atmospheric soundscapes and extended instrumental passages. The album was released on October 31, 1971, marking several significant milestones for Pink Floyd. Notably, it was the first album to feature lyrics credited solely to Roger Waters, although most of the vocals were performed by David Gilmour.

The evening’s entertainment is suitable for all ages.

Tickets are $30 for museum members and $35 for the general public. Seats are limited, and a sell-out is expected. For more information and to purchase tickets in advance, visit SchieleMuseum.org.

Ms. Ashley previously served as the Economic Development Marketing Manager for the City of Greenville, South Carolina, where she supported the city through startup and small business assistance, business recruitment and attraction, community engagement and content, and program and event development.

“Courtney is a welcome addition to our economic development team. I am confident that her experience, talents, and strategic thinking will build on Cleveland County’s successes, moving us into the future,” said County Manager David Cotton.

With over seven years of experience and comprehensive knowledge in economic development and community engagement, she now leads Cleveland County’s economic development efforts through new business recruitment, business retention and expansion, project management, site identification, and

post-recruitment support.

“This role offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with local businesses, government agencies, and community organizations to promote economic vitality,” said Courtney. “I look forward to fostering sustainable growth within the community and spearhead initiatives that attract new businesses, support existing industry, and ensure that Cleveland County remains a vibrant and dynamic place for everyone.”

Ms. Ashley has also served as the Marketing and Events Manager for the Town of Forest City and as the Director of Marketing for the Forest City Owls. She has a Bachelor of Arts with majors in Communications and Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Free medicine disposal kits and lock boxes are available

The Cleveland County Health Department (CCHD) is proud to offer various ways to prevent prescription medication misuse. The data show a clear picture—prescription opioid misuse prevention tools are more important than ever.

As drug overdose deaths and emergency department visits continue to rise in Cleveland County, the Cleveland County Health Department is providing free resources to help prevent medication misuse and abuse. According to NCDHHS, Cleveland County experienced 36 overdose deaths in 2022 and 241 overdose ED visits in 2023. Almost 40% of all overdose ED visits in Cleveland County in 2022 were due to commonly prescribed opioids.

CCHD offers Deterra pouches and medicine lock boxes free of charge to help local households prevent medication misuse, accidental ingestion, and environmental harm by safely storing and disposing of

unused or expired medications.

Dependence on prescription opioids can unintentionally start in home medicine cabinets, where unused and expired medication can be easily accessed by family members and friends. Harm reduction methods, like Deterra and medicine lock boxes, exist to help our community prevent substance misuse before it starts.

Deterra medication disposal kits are highly effective in rendering drugs inactive and unavailable for misuse and are safe for the environment. In a 3-step process, a user deactivates drugs by putting them in a Deterra Pouch, adding water, shaking, and throwing them away in the household garbage. Deterra’s plant-based packaging and non-toxic ingredients also prevent

A lush, green lawn is a point of pride for many homeowners. Eye-catching landscaping anchored by a healthy lawn is one of the key ways to improve the value and curb appeal of a home. In fact, the experts at HGTV say an attractive and well-maintained landscape can add as much as 10 percent to the value of a home.

Maintaining a thriving lawn takes effort, and that means recognizing when the green in the yard may not necessarily be coming from soft blades of grass. Invasive greenery, including moss, can infiltrate a lawn and that can be problematic if left unaddressed.

A mossy lawn is a sign that certain conditions are ripe for the moss, but not necessarily the grass, to grow. According to Lowes, moss thrives in certain conditions, which should be addressed if homeowners hope to corral it.

• Moss does well in acidic soil, more so than traditional grasses. A soil test can confirm if the pH needs to be adjusted to make it more hospitable to grass and less friendly to moss.

• Compacted soil and excess thatch can make it eas-

ier for moss to take root. These conditions also can make the soil damp and restrict drainage, something that promotes moss growth.

• Moss can grow in shady conditions. If patches of the lawn have been overrun by moss, there could be too much shade in the area. Trimming back trees or shrubbery may help; otherwise, homeowners may need to look into hardscape or plants that thrive in such conditions to remedy shady and damp areas on portions of their landscapes.

well as improving drainage and adjusting the pH, are keys to keeping moss from returning.

Moss typically can be removed the same way one would dethatch a lawn. It involves rigorously raking or agitating the lawn to loosen the moss. This can be done by hand with a rake, or in the case of a lot of moss or a large lawn, with a dethatching blade attachment for a lawn mower.

Aerating the soil will help keep moss that was removed from returning. In addition, amending the soil so that it has a more dense nutritional profile by adding compost, as

For pesky moss, The Spruce suggests making a solution of one box of baking soda to two gallons of water and spraying this solution on the patches of moss. It is a natural alternative to using chemical products. Certain sources indicate a glyphosate herbicide could work on moss, but the World Health Organization considers glyphosate to be a probable human carcinogen and it is prohibited in certain areas.

Moss may be green, but it’s often not the type of green homeowners desire in their lawns. Learning about moss can help when removing it and preventing it in the future.

but wrong

Pursuing excellence is not inherently wrong, but when our motivations are misguided, we risk seeking glory from the wrong source. For example, some people may give gifts to receive praise and admiration from others. Others may work hard to achieve academic success, physical fitness, or financial prosperity to be acknowledged as smart, attractive, or successful. However, as we strive for excellence, it’s crucial to remember that God is looking deeper than our outward accomplishments.

I Samuel 16:7 (NLT), “But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t

judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him.

The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

When we seek to bring glory to God, our actions become an act of worship and obedience to Him. We are motivated by a desire to serve Him and honor His name, rather than seeking recognition or praise from others. In this way, our diligence is not driven by a desire for self-glorification, but rather by a desire to glorify God. In contrast, when we seek to bring glory to ourselves, our actions become an idolatrous pursuit of self-worship. We are motivated by a desire for recognition, admiration, and praise from others, which is rooted in our own self-interest and can ulti-

mately lead us away from God’s purposes. Philippians 2:3 (NIV) says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves”

STEPS TOWARD HUMILITY

So, how can we ensure that our motivations are pure and aligned with God’s will? First, we must acknowledge that our hearts are prone to self-centeredness and idolatry. Second, we must seek God’s guidance and wisdom in our daily lives. We must ask for His help in staying focused on His purposes and glory, rather than seeking glory for ourselves. We need friends who will challenge us to think about our motivations and remind us of God’s greater purposes. Above all, we must remember what pleases the Lord. Isaiah 66:2 (ESV) says, “But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Lord, you are great, and greatly to be praised. Please forgive me for my self-centeredness. Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep me from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.
