Dover YMCA hosts May 18 Cleveland County Relay For Life

Hosts, organizers note RFL organization has been around for 25 years

Emily Peterson, Development Manager/Southeast Region for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event said recently the group will have their 2024 RFL event Saturday, May 18, starting at 5 p.m., at the Dover YMCA, located at 411 Cherryville Rd., Shelby, NC.

Peterson said of the muchloved, successful event, “Relay For Life of Cleveland County has been around for over 25 years!” adding, “...it has not always been held at the same location!” She further noted, “We are very excited to be having the event at the Dover Foundation YMCA and they’re a great partner!”

While there is no “standard crowd size” for the event,

Peterson said many of the participants are either cancer survivors and/or family members or supporters of and for cancer survivors. And, as the organizers have noted in the past, anyone can participate in the RFL as either a group or individual, so long as they register.

Said Ms. Peterson, “I like to compare RFL to a block party or tailgate! Usually we have about 300 people at the event. The crowd consists of survivors, caregivers and those that hope for a future free from cancer! We’re all together in the fight! ANYONE and EVERYONE is welcome to join us!”

As Peterson reiterated, the Saturday, May 18 event starts

at 5 p.m., and lasts until 10 p.m., and is held, as it has been in the past couple of years, at the Dover YMCA, in Shelby. Also, and as per the

ACS’ web site, food will be available for purchase throughout the entire event. “Additionally, individual teams will have food for purchase and we will have food trucks on site,” noted Ms. Peterson, who added, “Upon arrival (at the Dover YMCA), follow the direction signs and drive slowly to a parking spot.”

Peterson continued, “Registration is still open and we welcome people that want to sign up day of event! Again, you can register as an individual or team,” or interested See RELAY, Page 2

because they incorporate more contemporary elements into their design. Each option is ideal for homeowners who aspire to create a farmhouse vibe in their home interiors and exteriors.

• Modern: Modern front doors tend to boast a bold look and many are made up of large glass panels. Some homeowners prefer modern front doors because the glass in them allows lots of natural light into their home’s interior. The added light in the entryway appeals to homeowners who

• Traditional: Traditional front doors may be the most recognizable to today’s homeowners.

Often solid wood but sometimes enhanced with glass, traditional doors may feature subtle, yet ornate designs. Traditional front doors might feel out of place in modern or rustic homes, so they’re generally best suited to homes with owners that prefer more traditional decor inside their homes.

• Custom: It’s important that homeowners recognize they

need not pigeonhole themselves into a particular design style for their front doors. Custom front doors may be costly, but many door manufacturers or contractors customize front doors. Custom doors may suit homeowners’ with unique ideas about decor, and some can even mimic other popular styles while still featuring subtle differences. For example, homeowners can request an arched double door that, while unique, features many of the same qualities that characterize traditional doors, including ornate designs.

A front door can greatly influence the first impression people get of a home. That makes it worth homeowners’ time and effort to explore the many different front door styles now available.

CLEVELAND COUNTY’S

How to prepare soil for spring planting

Spring is a season of rejuvenation, and perhaps nowhere is that rebirth more noticeable than in the yard. Each spring, grass begins to grow again as inviting landscapes beckon people outdoors.

Extra sunlight and rising temperatures make spring a great time to plant flowers, grasses and trees. To ensure successful planting, homeowners must take steps to prepare the soil. Healthy soil can provide the ideal conditions for roots to take hold, helping plants estab-

lish themselves before potentially harsh summer conditions arrive. Preparing soil might seem like an extensive job, but a simple approach may be all that’s necessary to create conditions that promote plant growth this spring.

• Clean up the previous months’ mess. Whether homeowners live in regions marked

by year-round warmth or places where winter typically features heavy snowfall, it’s a good idea to clean up an area prior to spring planting.

Fallen leaves, rocks, grass clippings, and other debris can contribute to compacted soil that makes it hard for plants to establish strong, healthy root systems. Clear away any debris prior to planting before taking the next

step in your soil preparation routine.

• Loosen the soil. Once debris has been cleared away, loosen the soil. Depending on the size of the area where you’ll be planting, you may need to invest in tools like a shovel, spade, spading fork, and/or a lawn edger. If you’re planting in a small area, such as a deck planter box that still has soil from last year’s planting inside it, you can either clean the box and replace the soil entirely or dig around with a handheld trowel, cultivator and/or weeder. It’s important to loosen all of the soil around where you will ultimately plant prior to planting to ensure water can reach the roots and help them establish themselves once planting is completed.

• Test and, if necessary, amend the soil. A simple pH test can help determine the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. This is an important step as soil that is too acidic or alkaline can decrease the availability of nutrients the plants will need to thrive. In addition to conducting a pH test, which can be purchased at little cost at a local home improvement store, homeowners can contact their local Cooperative Extension Service to test their soil quality. These tests will reveal soil pH, but also can shed light on the texture of the soil and other components. Once the test is conducted, the local Coop Extension Service may recommend amendments to improve the nutritional quality of the soil so new plants can thrive.

Soil conditions go a long way toward determining if new plants will thrive. Preparing the soil prior to spring planting can ensure a successful season.

Closing out the evening of The American Legion World Series Festival will be Country artists Cooper

Alan and Craig Morgan

Country artists Cooper Alan and Craig Morgan and will be closing out the evening of The American Legion World Series Festival Saturday, Aug. 10, with free concerts in Uptown Shelby. Morgan previously performed for the ALWS for a limited audience event in 2022.

“When Craig performed here for us in 2022, our audience responded wholeheartedly to the music and the man,” says Eddie Holbrook, chairman of the local ALWS committee. “We are excited for his performance on a larger stage with a much larger audience.

“We are eager, also, to present Cooper Alan to our community. He is a North Carolina native who has made a name for himself on all social media outlets and has 14 million followers. We expect a high-energy performance of songs like “New Normal,” “Tough Ones,” and “Take Forever.”

To lead off the evening performances, The Vinyl Junkies Band, a 10-member group based in Greenville, S.C., will take the stage before the co-headliners perform. They have performed or recorded with artists such as Lady A, Darius Rucker and Mother’s Finest. They perform music from a cross-section of genres.

A native and current resident of Tennessee, singer-songwriter Morgan served 17 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve; in August 2023 on the stage of the Grand Ole Apry, he surprised the sold-out audience by reenlisting in the Reserve.

Respected for both his distinctive voice and his range of talent, Morgan is known for his “God, Family, Country” priorities and began his “God, Family, Country Tour 2023” last

fall. The tour is in partnership with Operation Finally Home, which provides or improves homes for veterans, first responders, and their families.

In 2022 co-headliner Cooper Alan sold over 40,000 tickets during his Cooped Up Tour and had 38 sold-out shows. His 2023 spring tour consisted of 21 dates across the United States and Canada. Before his appearance in Shelby, he will be in Calgary, Canada, with Kip Moore and Brett Kissel on July 4 and at the Delaware State Fair with Thomas Mac July 22. After the ALWS Festival, he is headed to Elmira, N.Y., and to Virginia’s Shenandoah County Fairgrounds to close out August. Morgan’s songs have charted 17 times on the Billboard country charts. “That’s What I Love About Sunday” spent four weeks at the top of the country charts in 2004-2005. His other Top 10 singles are “Almost Home,” “Redneck Yacht Club,” “Little Bit of Life,” “International Harvester,” “Love Remembers,” and “Bonfire.”

Morgan has made more than 16 overseas trips to perform for America’s troops; in December 2022 he performed three concerts for troops and their families stationed at USAG Bavaria in Germany. He received the USO Merit Award in 2006.

Stay tuned on the ALWS website and social media channels for more surprises and special guests' announcements! The ALWS staff is available at 704-466-3103, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM weekdays.

Heavenly help for Moms

(Part 2 of “MAYDAY” Series)

DANYALE PATTERSON

As we conclude our celebration of Mother’s Day, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the selfless devotion and unwavering love of mothers everywhere. It’s no secret that being a mother can be a daunting task, regardless of the age of your child. Whether you’re caring for a newborn, navigating the challenges of raising a teenager, or supporting your adult child as they navigate the world, it’s all hard work. The demands and difficulties of being a parent can be overwhelming, leaving you feeling drained and exhausted. But here’s the good news: God is always present, guiding through every step of this journey. He promises to comfort in times of uncer-

tainty, to strengthen in times of weakness, and to give wisdom in times of decision-making. Let us draw strength from His promises and find peace in His presence. Isaiah 58:11 (NLT) says, “ The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.”

PERSEVERE IN FAITH In Mark 7:24-30, we learn about a mother who came to Jesus for help, because her daughter was possessed by a demon, which caused her to be severely afflicted. The woman heard about Jesus’ reputation as a healer and came to him, begging him to help her daughter. Jesus didn’t respond to her immediately. The woman was not deterred, however. She followed Jesus and his disciples, pleading with them to help her daughter. Jesus was impressed by her faith and said, “Woman, you have great faith! Your re-

quest is granted.” And with that, he healed her daughter. This story is significant because it highlights the importance of never giving up on God or your children! Continue praying and trusting God. Galatians 6:9 (AMP) says, “Let us not grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in.”

Also, Jesus shows compassion to a Gentile woman and her daughter, demonstrating that God’s love and salvation are available to all people, regardless of their background or nationality.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, thank you for trusting me and giving me the privilege to become a mother. I am even more grateful that I am not alone. I can come to you with my worries and concerns. Lord, I ask you to remove fear, doubt, unbelief, frustration, and exhaustion. Refresh me and strengthen

my heart. I give my children (child) to you. I ask that you make and mold my children (child) to be what you want, not what I want. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.

One of my comedy excuses I’m known for when I come up empty-handed from a hunting or a fishing trip, is that my friend, partner, guide, etc. “dry-ridged” me. I forgot where I first heard that term, but I use it quite often to blame other people for my lack of success. It refers to the belief that they purposefully placed me in a location where they knew no game would be. I mean after all, who wants to put me on their favorite spot or let me know where their honey-hole is? Hunters aren’t nearly as bad as fishermen, but I’m sure it happens. As in my case, it’s just a friendly jab toward those who allow me to join them on a particular outing. It makes for good manly banter after an unsuccessful day. And while I don’t really believe this happens much among friends, I do recall a hardcore deer hunting father who purposefully put his son in places that held no deer in order for him to see how hard hunting can be. He wanted to bring him into the sport knowing all the bad experiences and bad outcomes first. And again, this wasn’t a friend. It was his son! Now, while this may have worked, I personally had much rather expose the people I love to the good, especially if I believe the good outweighs the bad. This reminds me of how many of us were introduced to God. I think we were dry-ridged. Not that someone purposefully set out to expose the negative first, but they did it thinking, like my hardcore deer hunter, that this was the best approach to take. What was this approach towards God you ask? It was introducing a loving, father-like God by telling us that hell was the results of those who reject Him. It was like God was saying, “If you don’t choose me and love me, I’m going to allow everyone to beat you up continually and never let you back into the family.” Yes, I can see how that would absolutely work! (cough, cough) The truth is, this is a terrible way to introduce God to the world. Relationships built on fear are lifeless, joyless, and unhealthy. And as soon as someone can get out of it, they will. And it’s the same when this kind of Christianity is proposed. The real reason to choose God is because of all the good things. Namely a father who loves you, does not condemn you, and sent Jesus so that you might not only have a glorious future but an abundant life here and now. He has promised to not only take your burdens but turn them into blessings. And because of His promise that all things will work together for good, what may seem like a “dry-ridge” will ultimately become one of the greatest adventures ever. Choose Jesus because He’s the best thing for you and because He wants the best things for you. The apostle John wrote, “Perfect love casts out fear.” When we begin to understand God’s perfect love, we will no longer start introducing Him from a place of fear.

The basics of fertilizing a lawn

Spring marks the return of lawn and garden season. Lawns often bear the brunt of winter’s wrath, so spring is a great time to nurse them back to health, and fertilizing can be an essential component of that process.

Fertilizing a lawn can be intimidating. An array of fertilizers, with each seemingly designed to address a different issue, can make homeowners’ heads spin when visiting their local lawn and garden center. However, fertilizing is a very simple task that any homeowner can tackle. In fact, fears about fertilizing are often unfounded and can be overcome with some basic knowledge of the process.

• Identify which type of grass is in the yard. The home improvement experts at HGTV note that turfgrass is divided into two categories: cool-season grass and warm-season grass. A local lawn and garden center can help homeowners identify which type of grass is in the yard, and this often depends on location. Fescue, bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are some examples of cool-season grasses, while Bermuda, bahia, St. Augustine, and zoysia are considered warm-season grasses. Identifying which type of grass is in the lawn is important because that will indicate when to fertilize. Cool-season grasses are typically best fertilized in early spring, while warm-season lawns can benefit from an application just before especially warm temperatures arrive.

• Survey the lawn to identify which spreader to use. A small yard or a thriving lawn with only a few bald or unsightly patches may not need a full application of fertilizer. In such instances, a hand spreader can suffice. For larger lawns and areas, a broadcast spreader is the ideal option. Spreaders have multiple

settings, and the fertilizer package will indicate which setting to utilize when using the product.

• Test the soil prior to purchasing fertilizer.

The lawn experts at Pennington® note that a simple soil test can reveal soil pH and phosphorous and potassium levels. Soil tests can be purchased at most home improvement stores and lawn and garden centers, and they can help homeowners determine which fertilizer will most benefit their lawns.

• Water the lawn prior to fertilizing. The experts at Scotts® recommend a good watering a few days prior to fertilizing a lawn. Such an approach ensures the soil is ready to accept the fertilizer once it’s applied.

• Follow the instructions carefully. Detailed instructions are typically provided on fertilizer product packaging. Once homeowners have identified and purchased the product they need, they can simply follow the instructions on the packaging, including how and when to water after application, which can make fertilizing less intimidating.

Fertilizing in spring can help a lawn recover from the previous summer and winter, ensuring it’s lush and green when summer entertaining season arrives.

Core Family Services: A New Chapter in Supporting Children and Families

In a significant milestone for communitybased services, Children's Homes of Cleveland County has unveiled its new identity as Core Family Services, marking a strategic shift towards a more inclusive and comprehensive approach to supporting children and families.

Formerly known for its dedication to providing residential childcare and independent living services, Core Family Services has expanded its scope to offer a broader range of vital programs, including adoption services, mental and behavioral health counseling, and supervised visitation. This transformation reflects the organization's commitment to addressing the multifaceted needs of children, youth, and families in the area.

"We are thrilled to introduce Core Family Services to our community," said Peter Bagley, Executive Director of Core Family Services. "Our rebranding represents our evolution as an organization dedicated to strengthening families and empowering children to thrive in safe and nurturing environments. Whatever the barrier to wellbeing and success in life we will be here to help them overcome and thrive."

The decision to rebrand comes as part of a strategic initiative to better align with the organization's mission of promoting the well-being of children and families throughout Cleveland County and beyond. By consolidating its various services under a unified brand, Core Family Services aims to streamline access to essential resources for individuals and families and, in so doing, grow its impact on the community.

"Our goal is to be a cornerstone of support for families facing various challenges," board chair, Gary Spangler added. "Whether it's providing a stable home environment for children in need, offering counseling to navigate mental health issues, or facilitating reunification through supervised visitation, Core Family Services is here to walk alongside families at every step of their journey.”

With the rebranding, Core Family Services reaffirms its commitment to providing compassionate care, personalized attention, and evidence-based solutions to

address the diverse needs of children and families in Cleveland County and beyond. The organization looks forward to continuing its legacy of service and making a positive difference in the lives of those it serves.

CFS is provides support to: families who are looking to grow through adoption, families who are working toward reunification with children placed in foster care, individuals and families in need of mental or behavioral health assessments and counseling, those in need of parent and co-parent education, children and youth in the foster care system, and young people aging out of foster care.

On June 13th at 4:00pm the agency will celebrate 55 Years of service to the residents of Cleveland County with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The community is invited to join us for a brief program followed by light refreshments and tours of our Gidney St. facilities.

Core Family Services, a 501c3 Community Nonprofit, is licensed by the North Carolina Department of Human Services, accredited by the Council on Accreditation, is a member of the North Carolina Benchmarks Association, the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce, and is a Cleveland County United Way agency. County-Wide Celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month

The Mental Health Association of Cleveland County (MHACC) is organizing a series of special events to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month in May. The organization aims to reduce the stigma associated with mental health through a campaign recognizing that we all have mental health, just like physical health.

MHACC’s Executive Director, Melodie McSwain, states: “In today's hectic world, it's important to acknowledge that mental health is an essential aspect of our overall well-being. Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing, influencing how we think, feel, and act. Just as we take care of our physical health, nurturing our mental health is equally vital for leading fulfilling lives.

Unfortunately, stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health still persist, hindering individuals from seeking help when needed. By fostering an environment of understanding and acceptance, we can break down these barriers and promote open conversations about mental health.

Recognizing that we all have mental health is the first step towards creating a culture of empathy and support. It allows us to cultivate resilience, cope with life's challenges, and thrive in our personal and professional endeavors.

On May 7, MHACC will host a free community art activity at the Eugenia H. Young Memorial Library from 4:30 - 6:30 PM. Participants will be able to make their own buttons with mental health themed messages.

MHACC is also partnering with CCC’s Pennington-McIntyre Art Gallery to host an Art Of Mind exhibit which explores the ways individuals living with a mental health concern navigate the world. We all have mental health and this exhibit seeks to highlight the diverse perspectives of those with lived experiences through artistic expression. The Art of Mind exhibit will run from May through September. An artists’ reception will be held on May 13 at 3:30 PM and is open to the public.

The month-long celebration will come to a close with a Storyteller’s Event at Got Books on May 24, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Speakers will share stories about mental health, resiliency, and hope. All events are open to the public at no cost.

Last weekend, the citizens of Kings Mountain were treated to a rare and beautiful sight - the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis. The display was so remarkable that people from across the county shared photos online. Northern Lights are not typically seen this far south in the United States, making this occurrence all the more special.

If you’ve ever wondered why the Northern Lights come in so many different colors, it’s because they are caused by different elements in

the Earth’s atmosphere. Oxygen, the most common element, gives off a fluorescent green and yellow color when hit by electrons in the solar system. Nitrogen causes blue or red colors, sometimes pink, while neon turns orange.

But what actually causes the Northern Lights to appear? According to Space.com, the Northern Lights result from a rather violent event. Energized particles from the sun slam into the Earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph (72 million kph), but our planet’s magnetic field protects us from the

onslaught. The Earth’s magnetic field sends these particles towards the North and South poles, resulting in a beautiful light show.

On Thursday, May 9, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center observed a severe geomagnetic storm. Observations around 7 p.m. on Friday reached level 5 of 5 in severity. The last time a solar storm reached that magnitude was in October 2023, at level 4. Amazingly, such a violent event can produce something as beautiful as the Northern Lights.

Our hope is that during the month of May and beyond, we remember to prioritize mental health—both for ourselves and for those around us. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels valued, understood, and supported on their journey towards mental wellbeing.”

The month-long celebration will kick off at the Foothills Farmers Market on May 4 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. The community is invited to paint kindness stones, wear green in support of mental health awareness month, and gather resources from MHACC’s info booth.

MHACC’s goal throughout May is to help reduce the stigma still associated with mental health. Organizations and individuals are invited to sign the “We Believe Mental Health Matters'' pledge to show support for mental health in Cleveland County. Everyone who takes the pledge will receive a free “We Believe Mental Health Matters'' sticker to display. The campaign page can be found here: www.clevelandcountymha.org/ mentalhealthmatters.
