American Legion Family to Honor Veterans by placing flags on graves on Memorial Day

The American Legion Family—led by Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron 82—invites the community to take part in a Memorial Day tradition: placing American flags on veterans’ graves at Sunset Cemetery and Webb Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, May 23. Volunteers should arrive by 9:15 a.m. at either cemetery.
SAL Squadron 82 began coordinating the “Flags for Veterans” project seven years ago. Today, more than 1,200 veterans buried in the two cemeteries will receive a flag at their gravesite—an enduring symbol that their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to freedom will not be forgotten.

After the ceremony, teams will fan out to place flags on veterans’ graves across Sunset Cemetery. Once finished, the Color Guard will travel to Webb Memorial Cemetery on Eaves Road to hold a similar ceremony for volunteers there. The event is expected to wrap up around 11:00 a.m.
Memorial Day began after the Civil War, when Americans decorated fallen soldiers’ graves with flowers and flags. First called Decoration Day, it later grew to honor all U.S. service members who died in the line of duty. Today it remains one of the nation’s most solemn observances—a reminder that freedom comes at a cost.

May is the fifth month of the year, and biblically, the number five is often associated with grace. Many theologians and scholars have noted patterns throughout scripture where the number five is connected to God’s goodness, kindness, and favor toward humanity. At its core, grace is God giving us what we could never earn on our own. It is his kindness in moments when we fall short, his strength when we feel weak, and his presence when we are undeserving. Grace does not ignore truth, nor does it excuse wrongdoing; rather, it meets us in our humanity and invites us into transformation. Titus 2:11-14 (AMPC) declares, “For the grace of God (His unmerited favor and blessing) has come forward (appeared) for the deliverance from sin and the eternal salvation for all mankind. It has trained us to reject and renounce all ungodliness (irreligion) and worldly (passionate) desires, to live discreet (temperate, self-controlled), upright, devout (spiritually whole) lives in this present world.”
In a culture that often emphasizes performance, achievement, and self-sufficiency, grace can feel countercultural. We are taught to earn approval, prove our worth, and maintain control. Yet grace interrupts that narrative. It reminds us that we are not defined solely by what we accomplish, but by the love we have already been given. As we move through the month of May, this theme of grace offers an opportunity for reflection. Where do we need to receive grace in our own lives? Where have we been striving when we should be resting in God’s provision? Grace is not a one-time gift; it is a daily provision. It meets us in new seasons, supports us in familiar struggles, and carries us through unexpected challenges. Perhaps that is what makes it the perfect theme for a new month, because no matter what lies ahead, grace is already there. John 1:16 (AMPC) states, “For out of his fullness (abundance) we have all received [all had a share and we were all supplied with] one grace after another and spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing and even favor upon favor and gift [heaped] upon gift.”

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

The Printing Industry of the Carolinas (PICA) announced that Westmoreland Printers, Inc. in Shelby, NC, won the coveted Athens Best Printing (Division A) Award. This is the highest award given to a printing company of its size. In addition, Westmoreland Printers received four Best of Category awards. The awards were announced on Saturday, April 18, at the 60th Diamond Anniversary PICA Awards Banquet in Charlotte, NC.
The Athens Paper Best Printing Award was for The Sleeping Giant, Stories About WWII As Recollected by a Nine-year-old Boy. The book, written by Larry Smith, a 91-year-old veteran who served in the Air Force for 21 years and in the Vietnam War, was designed by Beverly Stone of Westmoreland Printers and printed in full color with a UV-coated cover.

1 pie crust pastry, chilled 1/3 cup lemon juice
Zest of 1 lemon
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
Pinch of salt
• Roll the pastry out to 1/8 inch thick and cut out 12 2-4 inch circles, pressing them into the holes in a muffin baking pan.
• Optionally, chill the muffin pan in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
• Meanwhile, mix the lemon juice, zest, sugar, egg, yolk, butter, and salt and pour the mixture into the tarts.
• Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven and bake until set, about 18-20 minutes.

A panel of out-of-state judges with extensive experience in printing and print production was brought in to examine the work. Each entry was judged on its own merit in a category with similar printed pieces. The judging criteria included: registration, crossovers, clarity and neatness, sharpness of halftones and line drawings, richness and tonal qualities of color, paper and ink selection, ink coverage, the difficulty of printing, effective contrast
or softness, finishing, bindery, and overall visual impact.
“We are proud to be recognized by our peers as among the best in the industry. We continue to adapt as our market changes, but customer service and timely production, while maintaining the highest quality standards, remain the driving force,” stated Wes Westmoreland.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

About a month ago, I hunted this same area. I was able to take a big gobbler that morning. I had not been back since. So, I knew, after a month, I could go back and see if I could get another one of those toms to come to my call. It was a beautiful, crisp, and quiet morning. My set up turned out to be about textbook. Before I made my first call, a tom belted out a loud gobble over the small hill, about 150 yards away, and directly in front of my location. Just after that another tom began to belt his opening alarm, behind me, about 500 yards away. He started gobbling almost none stop. I was liking what I was hearing, and also liking my morning set up. But it got better. As day was breaking two more toms joined in the chorus. One just to the left of the one directly in front of me, and one to the right. I couldn’t ask for anything better. Three competing in front of me and one behind me. I’m thinking, “Let the competition begin.” That was what I was thinking, but that was not what I was feeling. I was feeling nothing. I mean my heart didn’t race, I didn’t imagine a trophy camera shot, nor did I fret about what bad scenario could happen. I just stayed calm, enjoyed the welcomed noise, and waited to see what might happen. Again, I did so without ever having the least amount of anxiety. Why? Because I had been here before. I knew that I had positioned myself as good as I could and there was no other move to make. I didn’t overcall. I didn’t sneeze or make any alarming noise. I did all I could do. Everything that would follow was out of my hands. So, why worry. Ah yes. Worry.

This is actually the posture I should be making in the more serious areas of my life. The posture that comes from being right in the middle of a situation that could turn out bad or good and yet remaining calm because I have done all that I can do. The rest is out of my hands. But the real, unexplainable calm, comes from knowing Whose hands my circumstances are in. God’s. Again, this is the posture God’s wants us to have instead of worry. Jesus put it this way. “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” And then He added. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. His words to us are basically this. Just get in the right set up (seek first the Kingdom of God) and I (God) will handle everything else, and every possible scenario, in every possible situation or circumstance, that might come about in your life. We have one thing to do. He has the rest. So, don’t worry.

Floyd Abel Queen Jr., 82, of Shelby, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Floyd was born on September 22, 1943, to the late Floyd Sr. and Johnnie Morehead Queen.
Mr. Queen served our country in the U.S. Air National Guard. In addition to his wife, Carolyn, he was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Queen. Floyd is survived by his sons Robert (Connie), Jeff (Amber), and Jimmy (Leslie), all of Shelby; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the Family Life Center of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. The funeral will be at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary with Pastor Aaron Hinton and Rev. Tim Trexler officiating. Burial will be immediately following the funeral in the church cemetery with military honors.

EASY FISH TACOS
Yields: Approx. 6 tacos
Fish: 12 ounces of cooked fish (salmon, flounder, or a preferred substitute).
Coating: 1/2 bottle of prepared BBQ sauce OR a dry seasoning packet (such as McCormick or Sauer’s).
Base: 6 small tortillas.
Toppings:
8 oz bag of shredded cheese (Kraft brand or substitute).

Garnish: Small container of sour cream (Breakstone’s brand or substitute).
Instructions
1. Coat the Fish: Place the cooked fish in a large zip-lock bag. Add the BBQ sauce or dry seasoning. Seal the bag and shake until all pieces are evenly coated.
2. Warm the Tortillas: Do not omit this step. Pre-warm your six small tortillas until they are soft and ready to fill.
3. Assemble: Place approximately 2 ounces of fish into each warmed tortilla. If desired, add an extra drizzle of BBQ sauce at this time.
4. Add Fresh Layers: Top with the shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and chopped onions.
5. Finish & Serve: Garnish each taco with the shredded cheese and
a dollop of sour cream.
ROASTED PEPPER AND CORN
Side Dish for Easy Fish Tacos
12 Mini Ears of Corn (If fresh corn is desired, 6 full-sized pieces cut in half and pre-cooked)
1 green pepper
1 red pepper
1 small sweet onion
Paprika garlic powder or one small garlic(diced extra finely) salt and pepper butter or margarine aluminum foil
• Place corn on sheet of foil, enough foil to completely wrap and seal corn
• Melt ½ stick of butter
• Brush all sides of corn with butter and follow by seasoning each piece with a salt, pepper, garlic, and paprika
• Top with finely diced pepper and onion.
• Add additional melted butter to taste preference
Completely seal foil, cutting about six small slits in top
• Place in preheated oven, (400 degrees) for 20 minutes or on a grill for about thirty minutes *peppers and onions should be tender when finished.

Cleveland County completes post-incident review of Emergency Response Protocols
Cleveland County has completed its review of safety and emergency response protocols for County buildings, as well as the response to the March 10, 2026, bomb threat. The review included interviews conducted by the County Attorney with personnel from each department located in the Cleveland County Administrative Building.
While officials are grateful that the reported threat was ultimately determined not to be credible, no such incident can be presumed harmless at the outset. Based on information shared by employees, County officials determined that all departments were notified and that the vast majority of employees evacuated the building promptly. The review also identified opportunities to strengthen and refine existing processes. Additionally, it was noted that some em-
ployees were off-site at the time of the incident.
Accordingly, the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners has directed the County Manager to take immediate steps to enhance and refine the County’s safety and emergency response protocols and to implement periodic training to reinforce those procedures.
To that end, the County is taking proactive measures to improve its response capabilities, with a focus on more immediate and uniform communication. The County is actively working to secure a qualified emergency notification system to provide both employee and citizen mass notifications, as well as sitespecific alerts, to ensure coordinated and effective communication in the
event of future threats. Due to the sensitive nature of emergency response planning, the County will not provide additional details regarding these enhancements. These efforts are intended to strengthen— rather than compromise—the safety of County employees and citizens who frequent County facilities.
The safety of County employees and the public remains the County’s highest priority. Cleveland County appreciates the swift response of emergency personnel and the continued cooperation of its staff as these improvements are implemented.
