The American Legion World Series (ALWS) Executive Committee will present a college baseball game at Keeter Stadium, the home field of the ALWS, on Tuesday, April 29. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Keeter Stadium on Tuesday, April 29 at 6:00 pm. This marks the 8th year that this matchup has happened in Shelby, NC on the home field of the American Legion World Series.
ALWS will be drawing live from the field for the 2025 bat boys and bat girls again this year at the bottom of the 4th inning! The chosen bat kids will receive some SWAG to get them excited about the upcom-
ing series and of course will pose for a photo with Al, the official mascot of the American Legion World Series. Al made his debut at the 2024 Jim Horn Tribute Game and will celebrate his first birthday as this year’s game. A fan favorite with both you and old, Al has quickly become a staple at all ALWS events. If you see him, be sure to say Happy Birthday as he officially celebrates one year!
Wake Forest Head Coach Tom Walter graciously gives up one of the university’s home games to host the game in Shelby as a tribute to the late Jim Horn. Horn was a Wake Forest graduate who played baseball and football and was a member of the college’s 1955 national championship baseball team. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 82 team that won the 1951 state championship.
Horn served as co-chairman with Eddie Holbrook of the local ALWS committee from 2002 until Horn’s death in 2015, the fifth year with Keeter Stadium as the home field for the ALWS.
Jim Horn and his wife Linda were both volunteers for the ALWS from the initial work to bring the series to Shelby. Linda Horn still volunteers and spearheads the preparations for the April 29 game.
“It is an honor to welcome Coach Walter and his team to Shelby again,” says ALWS Executive Committee Chairman Eddie Holbrook. “He has been a strong supporter of the ALWS for years. He is generous in giving us a home game to celebrate Jim Horn.
“Under his leadership, Wake Forest has risen to national prominence. We are fortunate to host such a powerhouse each year.”
The gates at Keeter Stadium will open at 4:00 PM the day of the game so attendees can watch the teams in batting practice. The main concession stand will offer hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, drinks and more. The free admission is a “thank you” to the community for its support of the ALWS.

Sun Exposure and skin cancer
The phrase “get some sun” is heard far and wide between the months of May and September. Many people spend much of their weekends outdoors between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and that means exposure to the sun.
As the mercury rises and more and more people emerge from their winter and early spring hibernation, a rundown of the link between sun exposure and skin cancer can remind readers of the need to exercise caution when heading outdoors in the months to come.
Sun and skin cancer risk
Exposure to the sun is a risk factor for skin cancer.
According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the primary cause of skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation comes from natural sources, like the sun, but also from artificial sources like tanning beds. The AIM at Melanoma Foundation notes that exposure to the ultraviolet radiation is the main risk factor for melanoma, which the Melanoma Research Alliance notes is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Does past exposure affect my risk today?
AIM at Melanoma notes that cumulative sun exposure and episodes of severe sunburns increase the risk of developing melanoma. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, research has shown that
the UV rays that damage skin also can alter a tumorsuppressing gene, giving cells less of a chance to repair before a progression to cancer takes place. A single blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s risk of developing melanoma later in life, while five or more sunburns more than doubles that risk as well. The damage to skin caused by a sunburn is indeed cumulative, so the more sunburns a person gets, the greater that person’s risk of developing skin cancer becomes.
So is a tan detrimental to overall health?
AIM at Melanoma notes that the tan many people hope to get and keep throughout late spring and summer is detrimental to their overall health. AIM notes that a tan develops when the skin tries to protect itself from UV rays by producing pigment as a protective shield. The more pigment the body produces, the darker the skin becomes. So a tan is evidence that the skin has been damaged by exposure to UV radiation. In fact, AIM notes that each time a person develops a tan, that individual’s risk of developing skin cancer increases.
Spring and summer weather beckons people outside each day. When that call comes, individuals must make an effort to protect their skin from overexposure to the sun.

Make fitness more fun and engaging
Resolutions to get in shape are popular at the dawn of a new year. Despite the best and most detailed intentions, many resolutions fall by the wayside shortly after January 1 has come and gone.
Many people stop heading to the gym or working out at home because their exercise routines become stale. By making fitness more engaging and fun, individuals may be more likely to stick with a new regimen.
Exercise with a friend
It can be tough to get motivated to exercise. However, when you have a buddy invested in the same activities, you can inspire one another to stick with the routine. A little healthy competition also can keep both of you focused.
Head outdoors
Exercising outdoors means there will always be something new to experience. Rather than seeing the same four walls of
a gym or a home fitness area, venture outside and embrace fresh air and sunshine, allowing the great outdoors to provide all the motivation you need.
Try something new
Change your routine every so often. This will force your brain and body to adapt and work a little harder and provide new inspiration for doing the workout. While you don’t have to engage in a trendy workout if you don’t want to, settle for trying one new class or machine a week to figure out what you may enjoy.
Vary your schedule
Think about scheduling different types of activities for particular days of the week. For example, Monday may be for walking, Tuesday for swimming and Friday for some a recreational sports activity. This can make exercise more engaging.
Use an exercise playlist
Download several up-
beat songs that can you get you energized for exercise. There even are specially curated playlists that match the songs’ beats per minute with exercise cadence, to help you run or workout at a desired pace. Find ways to exercise when engaging in daily activities
Exercise can come in all shapes and forms. Even when you’re pushing a
vacuum cleaner or weeding the garden, you’re engaging in physical activity. If these types of things are more enjoyable for you than traditional exercises, do more of them. Exercising can be fun and more immersive when people explore and experiment the many ways to get fit.
How to help pets acclimate to new homes
Welcoming a new pet into a family can be an exciting time.
Pets are wonderful companions and can even be beneficial to their owners’ overall health.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that pets may create increased opportunities for exercise. In addition, studies have shown that relationships with pets may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol and reduce triglyceride levels, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and other ailments.
A new pet requires owners to make various changes to help both humans and companion animals. It can take a period of transition for everyone involved to determine their new roles. Here are some strategies to help pets and people acclimate to new living situations.
• Create a safe place. Any person who has moved understands that relocating can be stressful. Pets may be on edge when moving into a new home because they don’t have the capacity to process why a move is taking place — even if the eventual result will be
something positive. Establish a quiet spot that is away from high-traffic areas so the new pet can grow accustomed to the sounds, smells and routine of its new environment. Then he or she can retreat there when necessary.
• Be patient with behavior.
Age-appropriate tasks for kids when caring for pets
Parents recognize the strong bonds children form with their pets. The unconditional love companion animals offer can be just what kids need at the end of a school day, and it’s hard for people of any age to resist cuddle time with a cat or a game of fetch with Fido.
• Retain some of the pet’s items. Owners may want to buy their pets new toys and supplies, but they should utilize some of the pet’s original and familiar items to make it easier for the animal to adjust. This familiarity can be comforting for the animals.
• Consider the 3-3-3 rule.
Animal rescue and training organizations, such as Alpha and Omega Dog Training, say the general rule is that pet owners can expect three days of a new dog feeling overwhelmed and nervous; three weeks of settling in; and three months of building trust and bonding with new owners. New pet owners should not feel disappointed if it takes some time for a pet to settle in. Cats and other animals may acclimate differently.
Pets who have moved to new places may temporarily forget their training. This means engaging in undesireable behavior, such as having indoor accidents (or those outside a litter box), jumping up on people, howling, barking or meowing, and more. It will take some time for pets to feel safe, so reinforce training with patience.
• Stick to a routine. Animals prefer knowing what is coming next and are creatures of habit, says the American Kennel Club. Individuals should establish and stick to daily routines where feedings, play time, walks, and other activities occur at roughly the same time. This will help pets feel more relaxed.
It can take some time for new pets to settle in, but with patient and reassuring owners, pets will eventually acclimate to their new homes.
Pets also can provide a way to foster growth in youngsters. According to Michigan State University Extension, pet ownership can teach kids responsibility and help them to develop important life skills like trust and compassion. But it’s important that parents avoid assigning too much pet-related responsibilities to children, particularly young kids. For instance, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry notes that children age four and younger do not have the maturity to control their aggressive and angry impulses. As a result, kids age four and younger should be monitored at all times when they are in the company of pets.
As children grow older, they can be assigned additional and more significant responsibilities related to caring for pets. Though parents are urged to give strong consideration to their children’s maturity levels before assigning chores related to
caring for pets, the following breakdown can serve as a guide for moms and dads who want to involve their youngsters in caring for the family pet.
Kids
ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance notes that it’s best to assign simple tasks as kids start to pitch in with pet care. Kids can be assigned water bowl duty after being shown how to refill the water bowl. Training is often necessary when welcoming a new pet into the home, and kids can sit in on training sessions and ultimately participate. This not only teaches kids how to interact with pets, but also acclimates animals like dogs to listening and following commands from kids.
When teaching kids to care for pets, encourage a gentle approach. Discourage kids from playing rough with pets, instead noting the importance of gentle petting and delivering voice commands without yelling.
Adolescents
Adolescents and, depending on their maturity levels, pre-adolescents can be given more significant pet care responsibilities. Modern middle schoolers and high school students are busier than ever, so parents may want to avoid over-
loading such youngsters with too much pet-related responsibilities. However, ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance notes adolescents can take dogs for after-school walks and even participate in less enjoyable tasks, such as cleaning up messes in the yard and emptying the litter box. These responsibilities can be shared among all members of the household so kids don’t feel as though they’ve been given the short (and stinky) end of the responsibility stick. Adolescents also can be given responsibilities like feeding pets in the morning or evening, taking them outside to relieve themselves and cleaning up pet play areas, including vacuuming such spaces. A daily task like cleaning a pet’s dishes is another pet-related responsibility that pre-adolescents and adolescents can handle.
Parents decide how much pet-related responsibilities their children can handle. But involving kids in caring for pets can help youngsters grow and serve as a great way to teach them important life lessons.

If you have hunted for a considerable amount of time, you can trace your evolution. While once any deer would do; soon you held your shot for something larger. But then what?
I met man years ago who made recurve bows. He took each piece of wood and allowed its own characteristics to determine what it would ultimately look like. Most had some type of crook that didn’t allow a perfect product, but they were extremely effective in the hands of a skilled archer. Not only did he make these bows, but he hunted with them as well. And I remember the pictures of success with both turkeys and deer. Most of the deer he took would be considered small by most seasoned hunters. He was especially proud of a fourpointer that was still in velvet. One picture showed his trusty handmade bow lying across the young deer. I can imagine how close he really had to get in order to make that shot. And therein lays the evolution. During the last few years, I have noticed my most memorable hunts were not determined by the size of the animal but by how close I could get to it. Just the other day, I was amazed as four jakes came within a few yards of my seat and stayed there without ever noticing my presence. There have been other times in the past where I have stalked within a few feet of other turkeys. I have also done the same with deer. One of my favorite hunts was crawling to a deer in the rain and making the perfect shot with my bow. This, however, is not usually the case. Most of the time I left empty-handed. But the memories of even those days are always fresh.
I have also noticed this evolution in my Christian life as well. I can remember the time when I was all about all the things that make for the front page of the magazines. It was all about the numbers and the image. I really didn’t know I was that vain, but after years of being able to look back, it is clear I was more interested in the trophy than in seeing just how close I could get to the real prize. Since that time I have thrown away most of the equipment I thought I needed and have realized to get the closet, sometimes you have to get rid of the stuff you thought you needed the most.

Brunch Made Easy
(Family Features) Gathering friends and family doesn’t need to be fancy. With its prime positioning between breakfast and lunch, brunch is a more casual and lighter alternative to the typical dinner party.
When charged with hosting a mid-day gathering, a little preplanning can go a long way toward ensuring your brunch get-together is as simple as it is scrumptious.
Get creative with decor. When prepping your tablescape, think outside the box. Opt for unexpected serving dishes such as tartlet tins and vases,
and transfer syrups and jams from their everyday containers to glass bowls or creamers. Fresh flowers and produce can add natural pops of color to the table and a bowl of fruit can make for an eye-catching centerpiece.
Plan a variety of dishes. Make sure you have a mix of both sweet and savory dishes on the menu that can please a wide variety of palates. Earmarking some recipes that can be made ahead, like pastries and casseroles, can be a simple way to avoid waking up extra early to prepare. Save the morning of your event for dishes that are best served fresh, like this Herbed Spanish Omelet, which features potatoes; fresh, spring herbs; and red onions, and packs protein, B-vitamins and cancer-protective phytochemicals.
Serve it buffet-style. Setting your spread out on the counter and allowing guests to help
themselves not only makes it easier for the host to mingle, but it allows guests to customize their meals as they wish and gives the gathering a more casual vibe. Try themed stations, such as a coffee or mimosa bar, parfait bar or bread bar, in addition to more traditional dishes to let guests take the customization to the next level.

Spring is widely considered a season of rejuvenation. The warmer post-winter air that is a hallmark of spring certainly adds an extra hop to the steps of millions of people each year, but a number of
events also lend a
feel to this beloved time of year.
• St. Patrick’s Day: Though the holiday itself occurs on one of the final days of winter, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations tend to take place throughout the month of March. Many communities host St. Patrick’s Day parades after the spring equinox, and celebrations of the patron saint of the Emerald Isle have a reputation for being especially convivial. A St. Patrick’s Day celebration at a local Irish pub featuring live music and food that would be at home on any dinner table in Ireland can mark the perfect way to close out winter and usher in spring.
• March Madness: Basketball fans get their fix and then some each March, when the 68-team, single-elimination NCAA Tournament tips off. Affectionately known as
March Madness, the college basketball tournament that unfolds over three weeks from mid-March to early April features its fair share of buzzer beaters, upsets and, of course, busted brackets. Regional contests ensure that just about everyone across the United States is within driving distance of the exciting, if maddening, action.
• Major League Baseball Opening Day: Another hallmark of early spring, Opening Day of the baseball season embodies the seasonal spirit of rejuvenation. Baseball fans across the globe know that every team has a chance come Opening Day, when millions of fans return to stadiums to see their favorite teams kick off the sixmonth campaign.
• Spring flower festivals: Spring flower festivals dot the landscape every year. Many occur between mid-March and mid-April and serve as beautiful, awe-inspiring reminders of the blooms that make spring such a colorful and enjoyable time of year.
• Kentucky Derby: The annual “Run for the Roses” is
held on the first Saturday in May and attracts more than 100,000 visitors to the race track at Churchill Downs. Often referred to as “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports,” the Kentucky Derby serves as the first leg of the Triple Crown and inspires men to don their best seersucker suits and women to showcase their most elaborate, and typically largest, hats as they sip a mint julep and watch the thrilling race unfold.
• Memorial Day weekend: Memorial Day is an American holiday that honors and mourns United States
Notable events that make spring even more fun
military personnel who died while serving in the nation’s Armed Forces. Though there’s a solemnity to Memorial Day events that is not present with other notable celebrations each spring, the weekend itself also has become a time to gather with friends and family for backyard barbecues. Beachside communities also have come to see Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial beginning of summer.
There are no shortage of events each spring that serve as reminders of why this time of year is so special and enjoyable.
