World War II love story in new book World War II love story in new book
By Jean GordonWorld War II changed the lives of most people on earth at the time, says author Matthew Tessnear of Cleveland County. The war led to death and destruction for millions who faced dangerous conditions almost unimaginable today. But the time period also resulted in new life through the numerous romances that blossomed as brave service
members exchanged letters with their sweethearts back home.
That beautiful perspective set in the midst of a fearful war is the focus of a new book titled “Wherever You May Be: The World War II Letters of a Soldier and his Sweetheart,” penned by Tessnear. The book is available from Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
About 15 years ago, Tessnear, who is a 2007 graduate of Gardner-Webb University with a degree in journalism, first read the letters his grandparents, the late Harry and Lois McCombs Tessnear of Mooresboro, exchanged during his grandfather’s time in the U.S. Army.
“I fell in love with the letters and with my grandparents’ story from the start,” Tessnear said. “I’ve always been interested in studying war through the lens of the human experience and its impacts on the home front. These letters took that interest deeper as I realized my own connection to World War II. It’s such a gift knowing what my grandmother and grandfather were thinking, feeling and seeing in the 1940s.”
The letters in the book reveal day-today life and the feelings of an American sol-
dier, as well as what people were doing and thinking locally in Cleveland and Rutherford counties during the war. It also weaves in a few cultural references to the time period and includes a section of photographs to help readers connect faces with the names mentioned in the passages.
“For me, these letters are so full of history and life,” Tessnear said. “I have long been interested in genealogy, learning about my ancestors and preserving their surviving artifacts. I also knew that I wanted to put these priceless documents into print and I just needed the right time and opportunity. I am thrilled to finally be sharing them with others to read and treasure.”
Tessnear independently produces the manuscripts and cover artwork for each of his books, drawing on a variety of
skills and experiences from a decade-long career in print journalism.
“I wrote and edited thousands of articles, took numerous photos and designed many pages for newspapers and magazines, and I continue to use many of those same skills in authoring books,” Tessnear said. “I appreciate the freedom of self-publishing because I can decide what to choose and omit, how I want everything to look, and every detail cover to cover. In this book, I realized my grandparents told each other multiple times that they’d stay together and love each other ‘wherever you may be.’ I knew that had to be the title, and it really brings everything in this beautiful story together.”
Tessnear lives in Kings Mountain with his wife Molly and dog daughter Charlotte.
He is also the author of the mental health memoir Eating Me Alive: How Food, Faith and Family Helped me Fight Fear and Find Hope, also available from Amazon; and a children’s book, The Monkey and the Bear.
His great-great-great grandfather Joel Joseph Tessnear served in Company I of the 56th North Carolina Infantry (the Rutherford Rifles) in the Civil War. (He did not make it home alive, dying in 1864.)
Matthew has great-great-great grandparents buried at Walls Baptist Church in Ellenboro.
Grandpa Harry and Grandma Lois lived in Mooresboro and Matthew’s parents Terry and Chris now live in their former house.

By Gary Miller GARY MILLERI’m a sucker for beginnings. I’m also a dreamer and optimist. And beginnings are the dreamer’s drug. I think this week will be better. This year will be the year. This opportunity will be the one that puts me over the top. This time will be different. And it shows up in everything from my health goals to the upcoming turkey season. This season will be the one where I locate all the birds and outwit my limit. Yes, this is the one. I don’t know how many times I’ve thought those thoughts and said those words. Not only about my hunting successes, but about things that are so much more important. Has my optimism come to fruition? In some things it has and in others I am still struggling with the enemy of my dreams. Discipline. Yes discipline. Someone said, the distance between your dreams and reality is discipline. I think they are right. The year I tagged more birds than any other year, was the year I got up nearly every morning and went to the woods, if only to hunt for an hour. I can remember those mornings when I really wanted to lie in bed. But I got up and went. Most of the time I should have stayed in bed but being persistent in my going ended up paying off. It’s like the phrase I have heard concerning the stock market. “Time in the market is better than timing the market.” I believe that is true. It is the consistent, steady, even boring days that ultimately lead to the successes we all want. It’s the mundane days of exercise and diet that build the healthy body. It’s the daily input of positive information that builds the healthy mind. And it’s the daily deposit of truth that builds the spiritual life. What is this spiritual life? It is the culmination of every other part of our life. A healthy spiritual life will be a cheerleader for physical and mental growth. It will fend off lies and protect us with truth. It will encourage dreams through the path of discipline. But it will also give us perhaps what we need more than anything else. Grace and mercy when we fall or fail. That’s why the greatest beginning might be the start of each day. The good promise of God is found there without stop.
The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. (Lam 3:22-23 NLT)

Changed by the Blood
(4th & Final Part of “Red” Series)
In the old gospel song “I Know I’ve Been Changed,” the singer LaShun Pace shares a powerful analogy, stating, “Somebody said how can a brown cow, eat green grass, and give you white milk?
Well, if you think that’s something, God’s chemical laboratory of redemption took my black soul and dipped it in red blood, and I came out white as snow.” I love this analogy because it illustrates the transformative power of the blood of Jesus. It is a beautiful reminder of the verse in Revelation 1:5 (ESV) which says, “And from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.”
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
First and foremost, the blood of Jesus signifies the greatest act of love and selflessness. In John 15:13 (NIV), Jesus proclaims, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay
down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jesus willingly shed his blood on the cross as the ultimate demonstration of His love for humanity. His sacrifice serves as a profound reminder of God’s unconditional love, grace, and mercy that are freely available to all who believe in Him. Through the shedding of his blood, Jesus provided the means for our sins to be forgiven, offering us a pathway to reconciliation with God. The blood of Jesus serves as a cleansing agent, purifying us from the stain of sin and restoring our relationship with the Father.
VICTORY
Furthermore, the blood of Jesus signifies victory over the forces of darkness and spiritual warfare. In Revelation 12:11 (AMP)
“And they overcame and conquered him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, for they did not love their life and renounce their faith even when faced with death.” The blood of Jesus carries immeasurable power to overcome evil and break the chains of bondage. When we plead the blood of Jesus, we declare our allegiance to Him and assert our authority over the enemy, knowing that His blood has already secured our victory.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, I praise you for being merciful and compassionate. Thank you for sending your son Jesus to die for my sins. You loved the world so much that you gave your only son that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. Thank you for saving my life. You’ve changed me; you have given me a love, purpose, and peace that is simply amazing. I love you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
CONNECTING
TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you on your spiritual journey, and find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.
Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! To subscribe to a weekly uplifting podcast, or contact her at www. danyale.com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her to speak.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
