Shelby’s Adventure House is “believing in people” By Alan Hodge Each day hundreds of vehicles pass by the stately two-story white house at 924 N. Lafayette St. in Shelby, but chances are scant few drivers know the good work that goes on there. One clue is a sign that simply says Adventure House. But what is Adventure House? How is it helping people? And what happens within its walls? Simply put, Adventure House is a place where people with any type of mental illness can come and spend time in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere where there is no judgement. The facility’s motto sums it up like this- “believing in people is the heart of Adventure House”. The history of Adventure House goes back 40 years. Adventure House had its beginnings in the basement of a local church in Shelby, when clients and staff from the Mental

Health Center met to form The Adventurer’s Club. Persons attending the program are referred to as members. In March of 1986, a small mill house was located, with the rent donated in order that the limited resources could be used for operational expenses. At this time, about seven members

were attending on a daily basis. This day activity program morphed into a Clubhouse Model Rehabilitation Program, based on the internationally recognized Fountain House in New York City. Within a few months, at-

tendance jumped to 22 members per day, and the name was changed to Adventure House. With the assistance of a coalition of four local banks, the current Clubhouse was purchased in

October 1987. In February 1988, Adventure House began the first employment program in Cleveland County for persons with mental See HOUSE, Page 2

During the mid-20th century, the beautiful, large Southern historical home where Adventure House is located served as the primary residence for Lon C. Bost and his wife, Eula B. Bost. Lon C. Bost was a leading local businessman who served as the president and treasurer of Bost's Bakery, Inc. The home at 924 N. Lafayette was a bustling family hub, especially during the World War II era. According to historical Miller's Shelby City Directories from the 1940s, several members of the Bost family who were connected to the bakery or serving in the military resided or stayed at the property.

Catawba Pickers Antique & Artisan Show Coming to Cleveland County Fairgrounds October 22–24

From Page 1 illness. A Transitional Employment Program enabled many members to work real jobs for real pay with local employers. In May 1989, Adventure House opened the first Supported Housing Program in North Carolina that utilized individual apartments. Since that time, the Clubhouse-based Supported Housing Program has expanded to 29 apartments, all occupied by Adventure House members. In 1991, Adventure House achieved another first. It was the first Clubhouse operated by a Mental Health Center, to become free standing. Through the fundraising efforts of its Board of Directors, the original Clubhouse has been expanded twice and is accredited by Clubhouse International and CARF. Adventure House is actively seeking new members. Membership is open to anyone with a history of mental illness. Adventure House events coordinator and member Candie Bell described the philosophy there. “Adventure House represents a different type of day program,” she said. “We all come here to build meaningful relationships and work in the community. The main goal is to prove we are better than our illnesses.” Adventure House comes with a set of “guarantees”. They include a guaranteed right to a place to come, a guaranteed right to meaningful relationships, a guaranteed right to meaningful work, and a guaranteed right to a place to return, all of which makes for a winning combination. A visit to Adventure House is an eye-opening experience. The house is divided into clean, comfortable, cozy, den-like areas where folks can sit and talk, play cards, or watch TV. There is a huge lunchroom with sparkling kitchen where lunches are prepared. There’s a nice snack bar where members can purchase refreshments. Outside, there’s a sunny patio with chairs and a fountain (built by members) for relaxation. Adventure House members also make field trips. A

recent roster of outings included a picnic at Hangtime Golf, a trip to the Cleveland County Fair, shopping in Gastonia, and a trail walk with lunch at Subway. Several of the members have been coming to Adventure House for years. Robert S. Curry leads the way with 40 years of membership. Curry lives alone in one of the 29 apartments Adventure House rents to members. “I really like it here,” said Curry. “It’s a nice place to be with your friends and a place I can go five days a week.” Bell, who overcame mental health challenges and earned an EMT and Firefighter certification, also praised Adventure House. “This is the only place that gave me the independence to accomplish the things I do,” she said. Funding for Adventure House comes from a variety of sources including grants, donations, and government agencies, but more is always needed. To help with this situation Adventure House will be holding a Halloween Fundraiser event on Oct. 24. The open-house festivities will be from 1pm to 9pm and include a “haunted house” in the garage out

back, Kid- friendly activities from 1pm-4pm and a “scare zone” from 4pm- 9pm. There will be hotdogs, a bake sale, vendors, carnival games, and lots more. Visitors will also get to see the fun decorations that members have created inside the house. A raffle will also be part of the Halloween event. Adventure House is seeking raffle donations in the form of gift certificates or cards, merchandise, products, gift baskets, tickets, memberships, business services, holiday or Halloween items. Contact Bell at 704-4738091 or Genia Robinson at 704-483-3370 for donation pickup or drop off donations at the Clubhouse 924 N. Lafayette St. “Adventure House is excited to open our doors to the public for the first time in more than 40 years,” Bell says. There you have it. Adventure House is somewhat of an undiscovered gem in the region that is helping folks help themselves to a richer, more fulfilling life. For information on Adventure House, including membership details, visit https://adventurehouse.org/.

Treasure hunters, antique lovers and families looking for a unique fall outing are invited to the Catawba Pickers Antique & Artisan Show, coming to the Cleveland County Fairgrounds October 22–24, 2026. Conveniently located between Charlotte and Greenville, South Carolina, the event offers visitors a chance to experience a true small-town destination with the heart of a community gathering. Catawba Pickers is expected to welcome shoppers, collectors and families from across the region, including visitors from 12 different states. Presented by the team behind Catawba River Antique Mall in Belmont, the three-day event will bring together antique, vintage, artisan and specialty vendors for a large-scale picking experience in the heart of Cleveland County. Where history becomes decor. Gates open at 8 a.m. each day and close at 5 p.m. Shoppers can expect everything from antiques, vintage finds and collectibles to repurposed pieces, handmade goods, home décor and one-of-a-kind treasures brought in by vendors from across the region. But Catawba Pickers is designed to be more than a shopping event. On Friday and Saturday, Nashville country artist Greg Pratt will perform live at 11am and 2pm. Saturday will close out the show with a full day of activities, including a 9am-3pm car show. Children who come dressed in cos-

tume will receive treats as part of the show’s fall festivities. Food vendors will be on site throughout the event, and additional amenities have been planned to make it easy for visitors to spend the day shopping, eating, listening to music and enjoying the atmosphere. The show is the latest venture from Catawba River Antique Mall, the 67,000-square-foot antique destination in Belmont that welcomes thousands of shoppers each week. The vision behind Catawba Pickers is simple: create a place where people can slow down, hunt for something unexpected, meet the people behind the merchandise and enjoy an experience that feels like a community gathering. Whether you’re a serious collector, a weekend picker, a lover of vintage or simply looking for something fun to do with family and friends, there will be something waiting to be discovered. Catawba Pickers Antique & Artisan Show October 22–24, 2026 Cleveland County Fairgrounds — Shelby, North Carolina Conveniently located between Charlotte and Greenville, South Carolina Gates open daily at 8 a.m. Show closes daily at 5 p.m. Come ready to pick, explore and discover something you didn’t know you were looking for.

Host Nicholas Edward Williams of American Songcatcher and Guest Leah Song of Rising Appalachia. Photo by Justin Forrest

The Earl Scruggs Center welcomed a live audience on Thursday, September 24, for the inaugural recording of Roots Music Revue, a new live radio program celebrating the music, history and stories of the Southern Appalachian region. Presented in partnership by American Songcatcher, the Earl Scruggs Center and WNCW 88.7, the program blended thoughtful conversation, personal stories, history and incredible musical performances in the spirit of the great live radio shows of the past. The first program in the three-part inaugural Roots Music Revue series featured acclaimed singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leah Song, best known as one half of the internationally celebrated duo Rising Appalachia. Song joined host and producer Nicholas Edward Williams for a wide-ranging conversation about Appalachian musical traditions, their connections to the Celtic Isles, and the musical influences and experiences that shaped her own artistic journey. Throughout the program, Song performed traditional songs including “Shady Grove,” “The Cuckoo,” “Stretched Out on My Grave” and “Red Rocking Chair,” with each performance connected to the stories and traditions explored in the conversation. Her vocals and musicianship were complemented by the Roots Music Revue House Band, an all-star ensemble assembled especially for the series. The Roots Music Revue House Band featured Shawn Lane of Walhalla, S.C., a respected regional bluegrass musician; Clarke Williams of Asheville, N.C.; and John Benjamin Davis of Chattanooga, Tenn. Together with Song and host Nicholas Edward Williams, the musicians created an intimate, spontaneous sound that allowed the traditional music being discussed to come alive in the room. Emceed by Peter Eisenbrown, the evening was designed to feel like stepping into a live radio broadcast—where the audience was not simply watching a performance, but becoming part of the experience as music, conversation and stories unfolded together. The program culminated in a lively hootenanny, with Song, Williams and the Roots Music Revue House Band joining together for a selection of traditional tunes. The enthusiastic audience became part of the celebration as the musicians brought the evening to a close with an energetic reminder of the communal spirit at the heart of Appalachian music. “Our first radio show proved that this is not just a concert, but an earnest invitation to understand your own heritage through the music and stories that have shaped these mountains,” Williams said. “It is a way of learning that pulls you in from the heart while you tap your foot, pat your leg, or bob your head, leaving you with something truly meaningful to bring to the table the next time someone mentions Appalachian music.” The Roots Music Revue program featuring Leah Song was co-produced and hosted by American Songcatcher and the Earl

Scruggs Center, with WNCW 88.7 and Isothermal Community College providing recording and production support. The completed program will air in national syndication on WNCW 88.7 on Saturday, October 3 at 6:00 pm. Listeners around the world can stream the program at WNCW.org, while listeners across the region can tune in to 88.7 FM. The series continues on October 29 at 6 p.m. with Travis Book, singer, songwriter and bassist for the Grammy-nominated bluegrass group The Infamous Stringdusters, as musical guest. Like the inaugural program, the evening will combine an in-depth conversation with live performances and the musical talents of the Roots Music Revue House Band, host and guest. “There is something really special about hearing these stories and songs in the Great Hall at the Earl Scruggs Center,” said Mary Beth Martin, Executive Director of the Earl Scruggs Center. “Earl Scruggs grew up surrounded by these traditions, and he carried the music he learned here to audiences around the world. Roots Music Revue gives us an opportunity to explore those traditions in a way that feels both deeply rooted in history and completely alive in the present.” Located in historic Uptown Shelby, the Earl Scruggs Center provides a fitting setting for Roots Music Revue. The collaboration with American Songcatcher brings together two organizations rooted in the preservation and celebration of American roots music. Through Roots Music Revue, the partners explore the music and traditions that have shaped the American South, connecting its rich musical past with the artists and traditions carrying it forward today. In addition, this series is made possible in part through the support of Sound Archive Books, Explore Brevard North Carolina, Rare Bird Cultural Arts, Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center, ReString Appalachia, and Ashvegas. The partners are grateful for their support. Tickets and additional information about the October 29 Roots Music Revue featuring Travis Book are available at www.earlscruggscenter.org.

Psalm 18:10 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller One thing I notice each deer season is how much more aware of my surroundings at the beginning of the season than I am in the middle or toward the end. The first few times I’m in a treestand, I am quick to notice everything about my environment. I take notice not because I’m trying to gain a hunting advantage, but because it has been months GARY MILLER since I was last in this place. The sights, sounds, and smells are new again. And their effect on my senses is overwhelming. At the beginning of the season, I find myself more aware of creation than of the creature I came to hunt. But by the middle or end of the season, it seems I spend more time focused on the task at hand and as a result miss some really beautiful things. I was reminded of this by the app that tracks my cycling trips. My most common ride this year involves an extreme climb. After each ride, my app records it and then gives me this message. “Did you even stop to enjoy the view?” And the truth is, much of the time I didn’t. I just rode with my head down, my heart pumping, and my mind on something I needed to do when I finished. What’s worse is that this ride takes place somewhere people come from all over the world just to enjoy the view. Yet I get so wrapped up in myself that I don’t even stop to enjoy what others have traveled thousands of miles to see. What happens on my bike and toward the end of my deer season, also happens far to often in my day-to-day life. I get so wrapped up in my to-do list, my appointment schedule, and my projects that I lose sight of the really beautiful things and the people around me. I fail to notice the trees and the birds or even stop to consider what wonderful and complex gifts my eyes and ears are that allow me to see and hear them. I think about my “stuff” and forget about my own mind, and the health of that mind, that allows me to even think about all that stuff. While millions come to witness the beauty of the national park where my bike ride takes place, we can all marvel at the works of God simply by considering how we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We just have to choose each day to see it all in a new way. Just like the first day of deer season. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org
