Phil Combs of Shelby receives national-level motorsports award
By Alan Hodge
Auto racing aficionado Phil
Combs of Shelby was recently honored in Daytona Beach, Florida on Dec. 29 with induction into the World Karting Association Hall of Fame. Combs was lauded for his half century of involvement, especially race announcing, with the sport of go kart racing.
Combs, who is perhaps best known for the voluminous collection of auto racing memorabilia housed in his backyard Combs Family Museum, was thrilled at the go kart racing recognition.
“It was a huge surprise and the biggest honor of my life,” Combs said. “If you are a karter, this is as good as it gets.”
As you might expect, over the years Combs has made a multitude of go kart and other types of four-wheeled racing friends. One of them, Tim Ellison, who was an owner of one of the first kart tracks, Possum Kingdom Super Speedway in Belton, S.C., that Phil announced for, shared his thoughts regarding the Combs award.
“I am very happy and thrilled for my buddy Phil Combs to be honored at the World Karting

that, but he is also one of the best kart racing announcers to ever touch a microphone.”
Combs was also honored at Daytona on Dec. 29 with a race named for him- the 1st annual

Mikey Kiser who proudly hoisted the huge trophy which was festooned with photos of Phil.
Combs traces his go kart days back to 1970 when he began competing as a youthful driver at the Shelby Kartland track. Combs was a natural behind the go kart wheel and took the track championship that year.

In the following years, Combs burned up go kart tracks across the southeast. He raced and won at circuits including ones at
Ellenboro, Lincolnton, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Darlington, Atlanta, Barnesville, and of course, Daytona. In 1972 he became a charter member of the World Karting Association.
By the way, all of this action took place years before Combs graduated high school in 1976.
Never one to sit still, Combs went on to start the Naskart Kid’s Class of racing. He also started a school to teach youngsters the art of kart racing.
“Most of your great drivers like Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and others started out racing karts as kids,” Combs says, Combs credits his father for getting him into the karting scene.

“We went to a couple of races, and he got me a kart,” he said.
Combs still has that very kart in his museum.
Shifting gears, in 2000 Combs began announc-

at this new phase of his karting life was at Cliffside, N.C. when the regular announcer had been a no-show. Combs was a hit and ended up being the announcer there for two seasons. Other announcing gigs Combs took saw him travel

far and wide. In total, Combs estimated he has announced at over 40 tracks across the Southeast.
Recently, Combs mused on his race announcing adventures, and their impact on his life.
“Never would I have thought that from first night announcing at Cliffside I would have just finished 25 years behind the microphone in 2025,” he said.
“There have been lots of long hot and cold nights and days, lots of long rides home when I probably should not have been driving. The best part of this adventure that started in 1970 has been the people. I’m still friends with some I started with in the very beginning. I’ve always been proud of my World Karting Assoc. heritage and have the patches, license, and memorabilia from the very beginning, I can say it’s truly an honor to go into the WKA Hall of Fame.”
A firm believer in staying busy, Combs hopes to continue his involvement with karting for the foreseeable future.
“Even though I don’t travel as much as I used to, I still want to keep announcing races,” he said. “I just enjoy karting.”

Two Cases of Rabies Identified in Cleveland County

On January 15, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of two skunks that tested positive for rabies. These are the first rabid animals identified in the county this year. The animals were found on Haywood Road, Casar and on Marion Street, Shelby. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from these animals should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5169 or 980-484-5100. Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva.

Prevention of rabies is based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies:
1. Vaccinate pets. In accordance with NC State Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be kept currently vaccinated against rabies and must wear a rabies tag. Cats are the most commonly identified domestic animal with rabies.
2. Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law.
3. Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies.
4. Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services.
5. Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina.
Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884. Submitted by DeShay D. Oliver

The bass fishing tournaments are getting ready to start with a vengeance. Once they begin, each weekend will offer another opportunity to fish for money. All bass tournaments have pretty much the same rules; two fishermen; one boat; the five biggest fish by weight, win. Some men will literally come to blows in pursuing first prize. And first prize can be worth lots of money even in the smaller tournaments. As I have said before these types of events touch both the competitive and outdoorsy side of men. It’s fun enough to fish but add in beating somebody in the process and winning cash to do it makes it an addictive potion. Most of the time, each team will spend the first few hours on the water just trying to catch any size of fish. The immediate goal is to get five fish in the boat. After (or if) that is accomplished, the goal changes. Now it’s time to cull the smaller ones that are already in the live well for bigger replacements. Remember, it’s the five heaviest fish. Sometimes the technique changes just for the purpose of perhaps catching less fish but bigger ones. Again, the lesser ones get tossed back in when a better quality one is caught. And there are occasions when some good fish are thrown back because a great one is caught. Our life is somewhat like these bass tournaments. We know we only have room for so many things in our life as well. Each one of these can be of little or great importance. Our life’s pursuit and God’s desire for us is to constantly add something that has a greater value than what we already have. What we must remember, however, is sometimes we must get rid of something that is of great value to add something else that is priceless. This decision always comes with a mixed sense of both loss and excitement. As we mature, we understand it just has to be that way. It’s just like that exercise shirt that you once wore that said, “No Pain; No Gain.” This is so true. But never forget, what you give up now will not seem so great a sacrifice when you get to the weigh-in. These types of sacrifices will always put you in the real money.

We will talk about all this on Tuesday morning. Get the Zoom link at outdoortruths.org

Alex Miller Announced as Headliner for Second Annual Blue Jacket Jam
The Crest FFA Alumni Association has announced rising country music star Alex Miller as the headliner for the Second Annual Blue Jacket Jam, scheduled for March 7, 2026, at the Crest High School Auditorium. The concert is expected to draw country music fans, FFA alumni, and students from across the region for an evening that blends national-level entertainment with strong agricultural roots.
Miller first gained national recognition as a standout contestant on American Idol in 2021 and has since built an impressive career rooted in traditional country music. In June 2024, he made his debut on the Grand Ole Opry, marking a major milestone for the young artist. Since his Idol appearance, Miller has released multiple successful projects, including his debut album MILLER TIME and subsequent EPs featuring fan favorites such as “I’m Over You, So Get Over Me,” “Don’t Let the Barn Door Hit Ya,” and the widely popular “Puttin’ Up Hay.”
In addition to his own charting releases, Miller has toured extensively and opened for some of the biggest names in country music, including Brooks & Dunn, Alabama, Hank Williams Jr., Josh Turner, Lee Brice, Jamey Johnson, Justin Moore, Neal McCoy, and Drake Milligan. He has also shared the stage with legendary acts such as Diamond Rio, Sawyer Brown, and Rhonda Vincent, further cementing his reputation as one of country music’s fastest-rising traditionalists. His performances span major state fairs, county fairs, and prominent venues across the United States.
Beyond his success in music, Miller’s deep ties to agriculture and youth leadership make him a natural fit for the Blue Jacket Jam.

Raised on a working farm in rural Kentucky, Miller is a strong advocate for agricultural education and earned the American FFA Degree, the highest honor awarded by the National FFA Organization. His background and values align closely with the mission of the Crest FFA Alumni, which hosts the Blue Jacket Jam as a fundraiser to support local FFA students, leadership development, and agricultural programs.
Tickets for the Second Annual Blue Jacket Jam will go on sale December 5, 2025. Organizers encourage community members, FFA supporters, and country music fans to purchase early, as interest is expected to be high. The event promises a night of high-energy, authentic country music while celebrating the traditions and values of FFA

New Resource Helps Short-Term Training Students

Cleveland Community College is excited to announce a new partnership with The Forward Fund (TFF) to help students in the Electrical Lineworker Academy and the Heavy Equipment Operator Academy cover program costs and cost-of-living expenses during training.
“Traditional financial aid does not usually cover short-term job training programs,” said Tony Fogleman, CCC’s vice president of workforce development. “Being able to offer this option to our students removes a barrier and helps students in two of our most successful short-term programs achieve their goals.”
Through TFF, and its partnership with Ascent Funding, students in the Electrical Lineworker Academy and the Heavy Equipment Operator Academy have access to zero percent, private education loans. The loans have no late fees, origination fees, or servicing fees, and students can qualify for an amount between $2,000 and $10,000 to cover expenses such as program costs, housing, childcare, and transportation.
“Helping individuals secure high-wage jobs raises income across the state,” said Meaghan Dennison, Founder & CEO of The For-

ward Fund. “Higher wages are the rising tide that lifts all boats, and that’s how The Forward Fund helps build a brighter future.”
There is a three-month grace period on payments after graduation, and graduates have up to five years to repay their loans. During this time, they can defer payments until they are earning at least $45,000.
TFF, headquartered in Wilmington, North Carolina, is the state’s only pay-it-forward fund. It finances short-term, high-yield training programs in critical sectors such as the skilled trades, technology, and healthcare. By removing financial barriers to education and training, TFF aims to empower local workers to maximize their earning potential, thus fostering economic growth and community development.
To be eligible for a zero-interest loan from TFF, students must already be enrolled in either the Electrical Lineworker Academy or the Heavy Equipment Operator Academy. Anyone interested in learning more should contact Alan Qualls, Electrical Lineworker program coordinator, at 704-669-4049 or quallsa@clevelandcc.edu.

Pray without ceasing. I Thessalonians 5:17
Following God’s Voice
(Part 3 of “Hearing God in the New Year” SERIES)

While God may speak in many ways, scripture is the clearest, most reliable expression of his voice. The Bible is not simply a book of stories or principles; it is God’s living Word, given to guide, correct, and direct his people. When we desire to follow God’s voice, we must first become students of his Word. It’s not enough just to read it or listen to someone else talk about it, we must study the scriptures. The Berean Jews were great examples of this principle. Acts 17:11 (NIV) says, “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”
Next Step
After we hear or read scripture, the next step is to live it out. James 1:22 (AMP) reminds us to be doers of the Word and not hearers only.
James states, “But prove yourselves doers of the word [actively and continually obeying God’s precepts], and not merely listeners [who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning], deluding yourselves [by unsound reasoning contrary to the truth].” However, it’s not always easy, because God’s voice in his Word often challenges our comfort, confronts our attitudes, and calls us to higher standards like forgiveness when we want to hold on to offense, generosity when resources feel limited, or trust when the outcome is unclear. These moments require faith. Obedience rooted in faith says, “I will follow God’s Word even when I don’t understand the full picture.”
Breakthrough Throughout scripture, obedience to God’s Word has always preceded breakthrough. Noah obeyed God’s instructions to build the ark before the rain ever fell. Abraham followed God’s Word to go, not knowing where he was going. Their obedience was not based on logic - it was based on trust. God honors obedience that flows from faith. Jesus himself modeled this truth. He consistently submitted to the will and
Word of the Father, even when it led to suffering. Following God’s voice often requires surrender, but it always leads to life. Obedience positions us to experience God’s faithfulness in ways we could never manufacture on our own.
Pray This Prayer:
“Lord, you are the living Word. I praise you, because you are truth. Your words are spirit and life. Thank you for the holy scriptures and that I can freely read and study the bible in this country. Forgive me when I have been disobedient. Open my understanding to the scripture and help me to obey, even when it is difficult. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encour-
age you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.
