Cleveland County Arts Council Chalk Fest, Saturday, Sept. 12 Let your inner artist escape on the sidewalks in uptown Shelby as the Cleveland County Arts Council presents “Chalk Fest,” a fun, family-friendly, sidewalk chalk competition on the Court Square, located in Shelby around the Earl Scruggs Center square, Saturday, September 12 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. This is an all-ages event. Children through adults, groups, and individuals are invited to sign up for an individual square on which to create artwork during the Chalk Fest event. Judging will begin at noon with the winners announced when judging is completed. Prizes are $150 for “Best in the Group” category (two or more people), $150 for “Best in Adult” (age 18+), and $50 cash prize for “Best in Youth” category (17 and under). There will also be plenty of “free space” for those who wish to participate without competing. The

public is invited to watch the artists as the sidewalk masterpieces are created or to enjoy them later in the day. Pre-registration is suggested to ensure your space; registration the day of the event will take place at 8:30 a.m. on the Lafayette Street side of the Earl Scruggs Center. The registration fee is $8 for youth individuals, $10 for adult individuals, and $20
for groups, and includes chalk to get you started. Chalk Fest is brought to you by the Cleveland County Arts Council and is sponsored by Cleveland Animal Hospital. Additional chalk can be purchased during the event. Though millions of children return to school prior to Labor Day weekend, the final holiday of summer still marks an ending to the season of relaxation and a return to the hustle and bustle of life when the temperatures dip and schedules fill up. Perhaps because Labor Day has become synonymous with the end of summer, many people look to make the weekended preceding the holiday as fun as possible. People with such intentions can keep these tips in mind as they seek to plan a memorable Labor Day weekend this year. • Wake up early if you intend to travel. Labor Day weekend should be memorable for all the right reasons and traffic is not one of them. A recent sur-
vey from the vacation planning experts at The Vacationer found that roughly 148 million people planned to travel over Labor Day weekend in 2023, which makes the three-day period a particularly busy time to be on the road or in the air. If you intend to fly this Labor Day weekend, try to book an early morning flight to reduce the risk of delays. If you’re driving, hitting the road before sunrise, particularly if you’re traveling a long distance, can help you avoid traffic jams. • Plan the weekend. It can be tempting to fly by the seat of your pants come Labor Day weekend, but it’s still best to book excursions and even dinner reservations in advance. The popularity of Labor Day weekend and its status as the unofficial end of summer compels many people to get up and go over the three-day period, so

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller Jacksboro Texas is a special place to me. Of all places, this little town of fewer than 5,000 people changed the direction of my ministry 13 years ago. It was there that a few men gathered at the Davis Ranch, on the back deck, and talked about life and ministry. A little while later, I was invited back for a weekend of hog hunting and teaching. This was the first of what later became our GARY MILLER Circle Events. Today, we hold them in several states. In the beginning, most of these events were held at the Davis Ranch. We invited 12 men to hog hunt, or turkey hunt, or to just do an extended Bible session. Other ranches in Jack County became a part of what we were doing. The Blue Mountain Ranch was a beautiful place full of turkeys and deer, with countless fishing ponds loaded with big bass. Yes, this place, just an hour northwest of Fort Worth, will forever hold a special place in my heart. But today, the people there need our help. The Ross Fire started on August 24th. Since that time, Jacks County has only received 0.03 inches of rain. At the time of this writing, the fire has consumed more than 89,000 acres. The firefighters have spent countless hours trying to contain it. They are spent. They are tired. But they are relentless, and right now, they are our heroes. They need help. They need resources. The people of Jacksboro were there for me. I want to be there for them. On September 11th Outdoor Truths Ministry will make a donation to the Jacksboro Fire Department with the money we raise between now and then. I am simply using this platform because I know some of you will want to help as well. If you would like to donate, you can mail a check directly to the Jacksboro Fire Department, or you can donate through Outdoor Truths specifically for this effort. There will be a special place on our website to give. These men and women are working nonstop to protect their homes and the homes, land, and property of people throughout North Texas. Downtown Kings Mountain will come alive this September with September Nights, a month-long series of free live music performances at The Gazebo in downtown Kings Mountain. Presented as part of the city’s local music programming, the series will feature four Thursday-night concerts throughout September. All performances begin at 6 p.m., giving residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy live music in the heart of downtown while

2 whole chickens, cut up • In a bowl, whisk the first 6 ingredients until combined. Pour half into a shallow glass dish. Cover and refrigerate remaining sauce. • Dip chicken on both sides into sauce; discard sauce. Grill chicken, covered, over medium heat for 30 minutes, turning occasionally. Brush with reserved sauce. Grill 10-20 minutes longer, brushing frequently with sauce, until a thermometer reads 165°. EASY PASTA SALAD 1 12-oz. pkg. tricolor spiral pasta 4 cups broccoli florets 1 pint grape tomatoes 1 can 6-oz. pitted ripe olives, drained 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1-1/2 cups Italian salad dressing with roasted red pepper and Parmesan • In a Dutch oven, cook pasta according to package directions, adding the broccoli during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Drain and rinse in cold water. • Transfer to a large bowl. Add the tomatoes, olives, salt and pepper. Toss in salad dressing to coat. Chill until serving. CROCKPOT BAKED BEANS 3 cans 28-oz. baked beans 8 oz. bacon (or less, to your taste) 1/2 onion, diced fine 3 tablespoons mustard 3 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1-1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
•Add everything (except bacon and onion) into small crockpot. •Cut bacon into 1/2 inch pieces. Cook on stove until half-way brown. Remove from pan. •Add onion to pan and saute in bacon grease until tender. • Add bacon and onion to crockpot. •Cook everything on low for approx. 4 hours. Stir occassionally. OLD-TIMEY LEMONADE 6 lemons 1 cup white sugar 6 cups cold water Juice the lemons to make 1 cup of juice. To make your labor easier, FIRMLY roll the lemons between your hand and counter top before cutting in half and juicing. In a gallon pitcher combine 1 cup lemon juice, 1 cup sugar, and 6 cups cold water. Stir. Adjust water to taste. Chill and serve over ice. BROCCOLI SALAD Place in bowl with sealing lid: 1 bunch broccoli, cut into small pieces 3-4 strips cooked bacon, crumbled ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese 1-1/2 tablespoons minced onion 1/ 2 cup raisins In separate bowl mix: ¾ cup mayonnaise ½ cup sugar 2 Tbsp. Apple cider vinegar Pour liquid over broccoli mixture. Toss. Allow to sit overnight stirring ocassionally. SNICKER CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES 1 tube refrigerated
chocolate chip cookie dough 24 miniature Snickers candy bars Preheat oven to 350°. Cut dough into 1/4-inch slices. Place a candy bar on each slice and wrap dough around it. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake until lightly browned, 8-10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. Easy! OLD-FASHIONED POTATO SALAD 5 medium potatoes 3 large eggs 1 cup chopped celery ½ cup chopped onion ½ cup sweet pickle relish ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon prepared mustard ¼ teaspoon garlic salt ¼ teaspoon celery salt ground black pepper to taste • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. • Drain, cool, peel, and chop potatoes. • While potatoes cook, place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil; cover, remove from heat, and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. • Remove from hot water, cool, peel, and chop eggs. • Combine the potatoes, eggs, celery, onion, relish, mayonnaise, mustard, garlic salt, celery salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix together well and refrigerate until chilled.

While paddling the shallow, shaded, cool waters that flow between rock cliffs and rhododendron, Sarah would always stop to pick up any litter along the way. Sarah, Beejay, Billy, and Davey died tragically in 2016 in a car accident. This event is in remembrance and honor of these friends and their love for our river. The adoption of Labor Day took hard work
Come the first Monday of September, many children and their parents start to face the reality that school, if it hasn’t yet started, is about to begin again. That’s because Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. But there is much more to this holiday than barbecues and the notion that fall is right around the corner. Labor Day was forged by the labor movement of the late nineteenth century. Many workers during this time felt they were underpaid and overworked. Conditions at their places of employment also lacked adequate safety. These workers banded together to fight for higher wages, shorter workdays and improved working conditions. Before it was adopted as an American federal holiday, Labor Day was first recognized by labor activists and individual states. Although New York was the first state to introduce a bill, Oregon actually was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, which the state first celebrated on February 21, 1887. Four more states
followed suit that year. By the end of the decade, three more states passed Labor Day holiday laws. In recognition of the momentum of Labor Day at the state level, and with the adoption of the holiday by another 23 states by 1894, Congress passed an act on June 28, 1894, officially making the first Monday in September a legal holiday each year. The United States is not alone in devoting a holiday to celebrate its labor history and honor the contributions of workers. Canada celebrates Labour Day to remember the rights of workers, which include paid holidays, medical care, fair hours, union wages, and safe workplaces. Labour Day was declared a legal holiday by the Parliament of Canada on July 23, 1894. The earliest Labour Day celebrations were held in the spring, but eventually were moved to September. Labor Day remains a time to honor and affirm the dignity of working people across the nation. It also affords individuals an opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved day off and reflect on the contributions workers have made throughout the years.

Labor Day provides an opportunity to enjoy one last long weekend with fun in the sun, barbecues, pool parties, and vacations. Although summer officially ends on Sunday, September 22, 2024, Labor Day typically marks the unofficial close of the summer entertaining and recreation season. As individuals and families prepare to fire up the grill or float in the pool one last time, they are reminded to heed key tips to stay safe and healthy. • Fireworks may have been components of celebrations all summer long, but it is always best to leave fireworks displays to the professionals. Also, sparklers burn at extremely high temperatures (approximately 2,000 F) which is hot enough to melt some metals. They’re are not recommended for children to
handle. • Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be a recipe for injuries or fatalities. Remember, just because it may be legal in some areas to use recreational marijuana, doesn’t mean it is legal to drive under the influence of it. Individuals should leave the driving to a designated driver or a taxi or rideshare service if they plan to imbibe or use marijuana. • Water-related injuries and deaths are highest among young children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says drownings continue to be the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4. Extreme caution should be used in and around pools and other bodies of water whenever children are present. When swimming publicly, swim

only where lifeguards are on duty. • Even though summer is winding down, the risk for skin cancer remains elevated. Continue to apply sunscreen when heading outdoors for Labor Day fun. • No one wants to leave a Labor Day barbecue with food poisoning. All party hosts should remember to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold while entertaining and to remember to cook foods to the correct internal temperature. Even if a grilled steak looks charred on the outside, that does not necessarily mean it is well-done in the middle. Verify temperatures with a meat thermometer. • Even the most well-behaved pets may become skittish on holidays like Labor Day, when there are many loud noises and unfamiliar sights and smells. It is best to have a pet microchipped in the event he or she gets out of the home or yard when fireworks, thunder or loud crowds scare them off. Shelters or veterinarians can scan the chip to identify the pet’s owner. Labor Day closes out the summer season with a bang. It is important to continue to be safe while enjoying one last hurrah.

Labor Day weekend travel tip Labor Day is celebrated on the same day in the United States and Canada each year. An annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers, Labor Day (known as Labour Day in Canada), occurs on the first Monday of September each year. Though its status as the end of summer is not technically accurate, Labor Day marks the unofficial end to the season of fun in the sun for millions of people across both the U.S. and Canada. That makes the weekend preceding Labor Day one of the most popular times to travel. Indeed, data from the Transportation Security Administration indicates that the Friday before Labor Day 2022 was the second busiest
travel day at U.S. airports that summer. Labor Day weekend travel figures to be just as popular this year, so travelers can keep these tips in mind as they plan one last summer getaway. • Book as early as possible. With so many people interested in traveling on Labor Day weekend, it behooves all travelers to plan ahead. Competition for hotel rooms and other
lodging might be steep, and individuals who plan to fly might have trouble finding seats on flights that leave during peak travel hours the longer they delay. • Consider traveling by car. Air travel afficionados had some good news and
